FreePress Christmas Concert Sunday in Poultney One of Poultney’s favorite holiday traditions returns on Sunday, Dec. 20, when the Poultney Woman’s Club presents its annual Christmas Concert featuring the Poultney-Granville Town Band. The concert takes place at 1 p.m. at St. Raphael’s Church Hall on Main Street in Poultney. “They are a wonderful band,” said Ann DeBonis of the Poultney Woman’s Club. “They have a full repertoire of Christmas music, and it’s very professionally done.” The concert is a local favorite. “We always get a full house,” said Debonis. That is very encouraging to the musicians, said Rusty Wescott, the band’s manager. “To have this kind of turnout is great,” he commented. “We will be making some good quality music.” The Poultney-Granville Town Band is a unique musical organization in that it encompasses all age groups. Its 42 members range in age from sixth graders up to those well into their senior years. That variety of generations works well for all the members. The older musicians have the opportunity

Living nativity Saturday Fair Haven churches hosting event The churches of Fair Haven will get together on Saturday, Dec. 19 to present a living nativity in front of the Methodist Church. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. Local residents may notice a very expectant mother and her husband wandering around the village green with their donkey, who is seeking grazing in the park. The couple will be looking for a place to stay, maybe at the Vermont Marble Inn. A flock of live sheep will gather around the fire in a field near the south end of the park. Young shepherds will be watching them with protective care. At the bandstand, a band of angels will be celebrating. All are welcome to sing with them. Following the nativity, everyone is invited back to the Methodist Church where hot coffee, tea, cocoa and goodies will be served. For more information, contact the Rev. Marsh Hudson-Knapp at hkfamily@ sover.net.

‘West Side Station’ opens in Pawlet By Jamie Norton If you’ve been missing the fine, fresh food of the Pawlet Station since it closed at the end of October, you’re in luck. Because Amber Hamilton did, too, and that’s why she brought the popular local eatery back to life. Hamilton, a transplant from Portland, Ore., has opened the business under a new name, the “West Side Station.” She

promises to offer the same kind of delicious, home-cooked eats that the restaurant was known for, but also add her own flavor to the mix. “I fell in love with Pawlet as much as I love food, so my relationship with food will just have to settle in and make friends,” she said. “It is my honor and pleasure to carry on the torch for the

Poultney businessman gives replica ship to WWII vet By Dan King There are a variety of ways to salute America’s veterans and a Poultney business owner did it in a unique

way on Tuesday. Francis Kinney, owner of Simply Pine Toys in Poultney, built a replica of the USS Duluth CL-87 ship and on Tuesday he gave that ship to

Bill Thimm, a World War II veteran, who was on that exact ship during the battle of Okinawa. “I built this thing for him,” Kinney said, noting that

Thimm gave him a blueprint of the ship, and along with the internet, that’s all he had to work with to build it.
