Kniffin’s “Seasons in Watercolor� at Canfield Gallery The Martha Canfield Library and the Canfield Gallery in Arlington will feature a solo exhibit of North Bennington artist Judith Kniffin’s most recent watercolor landscapes from April 3 to 29. A public reception for the artist will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. The reception is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. This body of work focuses largely on patterns and spatial ambiguities arising from figure-ground and color relationships. There is an overall sense of nature’s multiplicity—bodies of water, plants, trees, clouds—jostling with each other’s spatial needs. These are not relaxing landscapes; they exude energy. Judith Kniffin’s work, in both oil and watercolor, has been exhibited widely in Southwestern Vermont. Kniffin is a mem-

Garden Symposium Returns to the Equinox One of the gardening world’s premier events returns to Manchester this weekend, when the Equinox Resort hosts the 11th annual Great Gardens and Landscaping Symposium on April 4 and 5. The program opens with a 7 p.m. talk on Friday, and continues on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. New for 2014 is a special Garden Design Workshop on Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. This workshop is in addition to the symposium. The symposium features six dynamic lectures, a Gardener's Marketplace, great food, door prizes, and gifts. More than 200 gardeners from around the Northeast annually attend this popular event. One-Act Play Festival at Dorset The Dorset Players will present their 11th Annual One-Act Play Festival, featuring performances at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6 at the Dorset Playhouse. Gary Meitrott directs the amusing “A Coupla Bimbos Sittin’ Around Talkin’.� The play features Elizabeth Hazelton, Vanessa Beattie, Caroline Hogan and Tracy Hughes. “Lou Gehrig Did Not Die Of Cancer,� a poignant portrait of a man’s willingness to adapt to a changing world, is directed by Bill Cruikshank and features Mark McChesney, Elizabeth Hazelton and Tracy Hughes. Adrienne Cote directs “The Blueberry Hill Accord,� a humorous take on just how best friends in high school might formalize a breakup. Real-life best friends Kya Davis and Rachel Foster play the roles. “The Spot,� a funny, yet cynical look at political advertising, is directed by Zacharay Zupan. The cast includes Debby Goldman, Caroline Hogan, Vanessa Beattie, Levi Nelson, Kevin O’Toole and Bob Stack. Three Graces to Perform at the Left Bank Enjoy live, soulful and heartopening music at the Left Bank (old Merchant's Bank) in North Bennington at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, when Three Graces performs at this new community space in the village. Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake More than 750 bowlers are expected at Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 27th Annual “Bowl for Kids’ Sake� on Saturday, April 5 at Bennington Lanes. Taking place from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., the Bowl for Kids’ Sake event is the primary fundraiser for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and supports matches between “littles� and “bigs.� The growing mentor program, currently serving 60 youth, will once again be supported by the event. The littles, who are school-

aged children, are paired with adult mentors to provide a positive role model to help in their development. It is widely recognized that one of the key predictors of high school success rests on if the young person has a role model to look up to, one of the main goals of the mentoring program. The title sponsor for the event is The Bank of Bennington, a longtime supporter of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Sponsorships and lane time slots are still

available for bowlers interested in supporting youth mentoring. Each team of five bowlers works to raise a minimum of $200 from pledges and supporters. A free pizza lunch will be provided. Normally, these one-day training sessions cost $85 but they will be free of charge thanks to a Lois McClure Foundation grant secured by ARC.

Wilder Memorial Library, Mark Skinner Library, and South Londonderry Free Library partnered with The Collaborative, Flood Brook Union School, and the Manchester Dept. of Parks and Recreation to make these trainings possible. Janell Burley Hofmann to Speak at BBA Parents Forum, April 9 Burr and Burton Academy will host the third in a series of Parent Roundtable discussions, “Smart Practices in the Digital Age,� at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9 in the Riley Center. Featured speaker is Janell Burley Hofman, who will also be conducting workshops and leading discussions with students during the school day. Janell is an author, speaker, parent coach and a champion for parent engagement in changing times. She is leading the movement on tech and respect. Janell is also a regular blogger for the Huffington Post and a tech and family consultant for NPR’s

Marketplace Tech. Janell is the mother of five children and her real life perspective allows her to relate and understand the needs and challenges of today’s families. Janell is the author of the book, “iRules: What Every Tech-Healthy Family Needs to Know about Selfies, Sexting, Gaming and Growing Up.� The goal of these parent dialog sessions is to give insight to the issues our children are facing as well as help parents in coming up with ways to approach them in a positive manner.
