MMF Concert Showcases Strings and Guitar from Tango to Tchaikovsky In a program spanning continents and musical eras, Manchester Music Festival’s Thanksgiving concert, “Buenos Aires to Saint Petersburg promises to engage attendees of all ages with its spirited ending to the holiday weekend. The concert, which takes place on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 4 p.m. at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert on the Dorset green, opens with 20thcentury Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla’s sweeping L’Histoire du Tango, featuring Joana Genova on violin and Oren Fader on guitar. Following the Piazzolla will be Paseos, by the contemporary Mexican composer Eduardo Angulo (b. 1954), in which Mr. Fader will play with the MMF trio of Ms.

Genova, Artistic Director and violist Ariel Rudiakov, and cellist Benjamin Capps. The concert’s second half takes musical flight across the sea, with the MMF String Quartet (Deborah Buck and Joana Genova, violins, Ariel Rudiakov, viola and Benjamin Capps, cello) performing Tchaikovsky’s bestknown String Quartet No. 1 in D Major, Op. 11. The quartet’s second movement, Andante cantabile, is said to have moved the author Leo Tolstoy to tears when it was played at a concert in his honor. Tickets for this open-seating performance are $30 for adults, $13 for young people 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased

Stewardship is Inherent at LTS At Long Trail School, stewardship is more than a programmatic aspect of the educational offerings. It is a natural part of what is done during the school day. A true sense of serving one’s community, through acts big or small, invisible or evident, is woven into the Long Trail experience. The school’s National Honor Society acts as caretaker of the Dorset West Road with trash cleanup, and the soccer teams help out on the local bike trail. Recently, a student group did some “flash mob raking on the Dorset Green. In English classes, students practice letter-writing formats by sending appreci-

ation to bus drivers, family, friends and former teachers. While studying Buddhism in a history class, students were encouraged by their teacher to do good deeds as a means of improving their karma. Students are currently assisting children in rural Africa through the KURA Project and helping children attend school in Nepal. The point is that Long Trail kids are working every day to improve their world‌and yours. If you know of a project that could use a bit of help, please contact Justin Bendall at 802-867-5717 ext. 107.

Holidays at Hildene, December 7- 8 In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made the “Thanksgiving Proclamation, designating the last Thursday of November as the official day of celebration for the country. The Civil War president saw this holiday as a time for a war-weary people to pause and give thanks that the conflict would soon be over. At The Lincoln Family Home at Hildene, Thanksgiving marks the waning days of autumn and signals the arrival of the festive holiday season and winter’s approach. To honor President Lincoln’s role in making Thanksgiving a day of celebration for all Americans, Hildene invites visitors to “Guess the Lincoln Pennies in the Jar. The contest commences on Monday, Nov. 25 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 8, the conclusion of Open House Weekend at The Museum Store. Only one entry per person is allowed and no admission fee or store

purchase is required to “Guess the Pennies in the Jar. Youth ages 5 to 15, accompanied by an adult, are invited to stop by the Welcome Center during this time to record their estimate of how many Lincoln pennies there are in the jar. The winner will be the person whose guess comes closest to the total number of pennies. They will receive a check in their name for the actual amount and Hildene will match that amount with a check to a non-profit of the winner’s choosing (certain criteria do apply). Adults, those 16 and older, may also participate by submitting a guess. In this case the winner will receive a copy of “Giant in the Shadows: The Life of Robert T. Lincoln, written by Jason Emerson, a Lincoln scholar and former Hildene Scholar in Residence. The biography of this presidential son is the first to be written in more than four decades. The public is invited to par-

ticipate in Hildene’s longstanding tradition of an open house at The Museum Store, Our House for the Holidays. It continues this year on Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday, Dec. 8. From 1 to 2 pm on Sunday, The Emerald Valley Recorder Ensemble provides music in The Museum Store. If shoppers wish to continue their Hildene experience with a visit to the house, decorated for the holidays, Hildene Farm, and the Pullman car, Sunbeam, guest passes are available for purchase at the Welcome Center. The Lincoln Family Home at Hildene is open daily from 9:30 to 4:30. Admission is $16 for adults and $5 for children under 14. Members, volunteers and children under 6 are free. The historic site is closed November 28, Thanksgiving Day, and December 24 and 25 for the holidays. For more information visit www. hildene.org, call 802.362.1788 or email info@hildene.org.

Rehearsals are underway for the cast of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show at the Dorset Playhouse, with performances to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14, and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 and 15. This story of redemption resonates with all ages, and this season, Angie Merwin is directing Joe Landry’s adaptation of this treasured holiday classic. We set out on Christmas Eve, 1946, as a group of radio actors gather at WDPI in Manhattan to perform live, in front of us, their “studio audience. The characters on stage adopt the names of radio actors not the fictional characters in the story. This new take on the production promises to deliver the excitement of live radio without sacrificing the emotional potency of the original story. "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show" is truly a show for the whole family. Angie Merwin has cast 14 local actors to perform 35 roles. Even the children, Rowan Russell, Luke Chila, Livia Barclay and Noah Price, portray multiple characters; they

are an undeniably talented and energetic group of young thespians. Mark McChesney returns to the Dorset Playhouse after a five-year hiatus. Mark plays an actor/radio announcer by the name of Freddie Filmore. In his many roles, Mark will dazzle the audience with his mastery of accents. Jim Young plays Ray Gordon, the radio actor who brings to life such characters as Uncle Billy and Peter Bailey. This season, Caroline is Sally Applewhite, playing George Bailey’s “girl, Mary Hatch. Caroline makes a marvelous Mary. Alec Lewis will perform as Jake Laurents playing George Bailey. Many years have passed since Alec graced the Playhouse stage as a child. Well, he’s all grown up but hasn’t lost a bit of his boyish charm. This show is a must-see for anyone wanting to kick off the holiday season with a tried-and-true tradition. Tickets to “It’s a Wonderful Life are $20 for adults $8 for students $8. The opening night performance will be two for the price of one with a reception to follow.
