How to get to our gallery.

Welcome Whether you’ve got 10 minutes, all day, are on your own or have the children with you, we’d love to see you. You don’t have to like everything inside. And you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy a visit. It’s your gallery It’s the Northwest’s Large Visitor Attraction of the Year. It’s free. And it’s in the heart of Manchester. What’s inside? Our collection covers all periods. It’s made up of fine art (paintings, drawings and sculpture) and decorative art – from ancient pottery to 21st century furniture. We’re probably most famous for our Pre-Raphaelite paintings (on the first floor). However, all periods are covered including what’s happening now. Check out the ground floor Manchester Gallery for an introduction to the city’s rich artistic history. Pick up one of our free highlights leaflets and follow a short trail or collect a floor plan and just wander. Children are welcome We’ve got lots on for families, especially at weekends and in school holidays. See pages 12 and 13 for ideas. Wanting to escape the crowds? We can be very popular with schools and groups. For a quieter visit, try us during term-time, Tuesday–Friday after 3pm or weekends before midday. 44

Relax Catch up with friends and family over lunch or a coffee. Pop into the gallery shop for a bit of inspiration. Whatever you do, have a great day in.

Eat and drink Refresh yourself in our cafe or self-service restaurant - now with free WiFi. We serve hot and cold food and drinks, including children’s portions and packed lunches. Our menus change seasonally. And everything is made downstairs in our gallery kitchen including our delicious home-made cakes. Bags of inspiration Looking for a special Christmas gift? The gallery shop sells fabulous artinspired books, stationery and beautiful jewellery, as well as some of the most desirable Christmas cards in the city.

A selection of our most popular ranges is also available to buy online at www.manchestergalleries.org Want to give something a little different this year? Treat an art-lover to membership of our Friends scheme. It costs as little as ÂŁ24 for a year and helps support the gallery, as do all your purchases in the cafe and shop. Explore We’ve just added two very exciting new additions to our collection, both made by Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry.

Jane Austen in E17 This large vase is a striking example of a ceramic work by Grayson Perry. It is decorated with figures dressed in elegant Georgian costume but, if you look closely, you’ll find lots of references to the more sinister aspects of life in modern East End London.

You can see both works on display in the gallery for the first time in a new exhibition opening this February.

Print for a Politician This work is a highly detailed and unusualy large etching that comments on the universality of conflict.

Grayson Perry: Visual Dialogues Launches 1 February Jane Austen in E17 and Print for a Politician form the thought-provoking focus of this new exhibition co-curated by our Creative Consultants, a group of young people who work with us on innovative interpretation projects.

Manchester City Galleries has only been able to purchase these works thanks to the generous support of the Art Fund, the V&A/MLA Purchase Fund and two private donors.

The show makes links between these new acquisitions and rarely seen examples of historic costume, prints and ceramics selected from our stores.

8

I heart… Sat 12 February, 3–5pm Turn up, dress up, meet up at this costume-themed event run by young people (our Creative Consultants) for young people. Free. No need to book.

Visual Dialogues: Young people and artists interpreting art together. Visual Dialogues is a partnership programme managed by Tate Britain working with regional museums and galleries. The programme is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Children, Schools and Families as part of the Strategic Commissioning Programme for Museum and Gallery Education.

Coming soon... Exhibitions and displays to look forward to.

Anish Kapoor: Flashback From the Arts Council Collection 5 March–5 June 2011 Be among the first to see this major new exhibition by one of the UK’s leading artists, Turner Prize-winning Anish Kapoor. The exhibition will feature important works selected by the artist from the Arts Council Collection, from major UK collections and from the artist’s studio. Manchester Art Gallery is the launch venue for this Hayward Touring exhibition, curated and organised by the Arts Council Collection.

New balcony displays From April 2011 Regular visitors will notice a lot of activity in our entrance hall over the coming months. We’re getting the building ready for a new display of artworks on the stairway and balcony. Preparations include cladding walls to protect our Grade 1 listed gallery building. The displays will feature artworks depicting the human form such as Gwen John’s painting The Letter (pictured above). They are being installed in response to many requests from the public for work to be shown in this area. We’re also developing a virtual tour that will be accessible to visitors at ground level.
