Welcome

Relax

Whether you’ve got 10 minutes, all day, are on your own or have the children with you, we’d love to see you. You don’t have to like everything inside. And you don’t need to be an expert to enjoy a visit.

Catch up with friends and family over lunch or a coffee. Pop into the gallery shop for a bit of inspiration. Whatever you do, have a great day in.

It’s your gallery It’s free. It’s just won Large Visitor Attraction in the Manchester Tourism Awards 2010. And it’s in the heart of Manchester. What’s inside? Our collection covers all periods. It’s made up of fine art (paintings, drawings and sculpture) and decorative art – from ancient pottery to 21st century furniture. We’re probably most famous for our Pre-Raphaelite paintings (on the first floor). However, all periods are covered including what’s happening now. Pick up one of our free leaflets and follow a short trail, or ask for one of our audio guides at the information desk. Children are welcome We’ve got lots on for families, especially at weekends and in school holidays. See pages 10 and 11 for ideas. Wanting to escape the crowds? We can be very popular with schools and groups. For a quieter visit, try us during term-time, Tuesday – Friday after 3pm or weekends before midday. 44

Eat and drink You’ve given us great feedback on the new menus and decor in the gallery restaurant and cafe. However, you’ve also told us you prefer self-service in the restaurant. So, from mid-June, you can help yourself to our great range of snacks, cakes and light meals once more. Snack and surf You’re welcome to use our free WiFi service in the cafe and restaurant. Bags of inspiration Looking for a special gift? The gallery shop sells a fabulous range of art-inspired books, stationery and some beautiful jewellery. A selection of our most popular ranges is also available to buy online, including over 40 beautiful Dorothy Bohm prints, at www.manchestergalleries.org All your purchases help support the gallery. So thank you for shopping and eating with us.

Did you know that Manchester Art Gallery Friends can enjoy discounts in the cafe, restaurant and shop? See page 16 for details. 5

Recorders Rafael Lozano-Hemmer 18 September–30 January Recorders is a solo exhibition from one of the world’s most exciting contemporary artists. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer creates artworks that see, hear and feel the actions of people around them, using technologies such as biometric scanners, surveillance cameras and microphones. This major new solo exhibition features seven recent pieces by the artist, including the world premiere of a specially commissioned new installation. Manchester Art Gallery is the only UK venue for the show.

All the pieces depend upon your participation to exist: in internet speak, all their content is “crowdsourced”. The installations react to and record your interaction with them, from your appearance and the movements you make, to your voice and even your pulse.

Exhibition Events

Visit and you’ll leave a trace of yourself in his art.

There will also be a programme of public events to coincide with the exhibition, including a special evening event on Friday 1 October.

The new commission, People on People, is a co-commission between Manchester Art Gallery and Abandon Normal Devices (AND) festival. AND is a major new regional festival of New Cinema and Digital Culture and forms part of WE PLAY – the Northwest’s cultural legacy programme for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. www.andfestival.org.uk
