The Philly Fans There's one undeniable truth about Philadelphia: its sports fans are unwaveringly committed. The bustling stores in Manayunk thrive on the support, making it a breeze to showcase your love for the city. So, when you are thinking about what to get your Philadelphia Sports Team loving friend, a stroll up and down Main Street is a must to snag some gear. Our first recommendation is Minor Details, located at 4401 Main Street. Owner Mallory Minor started her boutique in just September 2023! After having exceptional success through her online Etsy shop, Mallory decided to move her business to a brick and mortar store. The boutique features an array of products that she offers on her online shop, with the addition of jewelry, cute gift items, boutique gifts, and even more. In addition to her shop, she has a wonderful event space that is available for rent. One of Mallory’s hot items is a perfect gift for someone who is at every Eagle’s tailgate. The Kelly Green Cropped Vest will keep you warm during the all day event of football games. It will differ from all the jerseys your gift receiver will own, but still represent the birds! To complete the game day experience, consider pairing the vest with reusable glassware or mugs, available in multiple different sayings, sports teams, and color Whether it's sipping morning coffee or enjoying beverages at the tailgate, you can spoil your sports fan with a touch of Philly pride. For those who may be a bit more lowkey and watch the game in their man cave, Urbanburb Furniture has some products they can hang up for all the seasons to support. Their unique Philadelphia Eagles Logo is a perfect home decor item. Urbanburb is home to an amazing selection of high-end design, second hand furniture and housewares. They also create their own pieces using Live Edge Wood Slabs and epoxy. They are able to work with you to create your dream piece of furniture! Owner, Joe Donohue, creates a sleek - ‘GO BIRDS Solid Epoxy Magnet’ that would pair perfectly with any beer fridge that's next to the TV blasting the game in your gift receiver’s man cave. Joe explains why this is the perfect gift for your loved one that is an Eagle’s fan. “Great for any Philly Football fan and lover of high quality products that will be with them for many seasons to come.” Johnny Destructo’s Hero Complex is a comic book store run by a superhero himself - JD Holden. Catering to all nerdy interests, you can find a wide variety of comic books, action figures, and art. JD is also an artist himself! He designs quirky and fun t-shirts and stickers. Which leads you to the next store that you can grab interesting products for your Philadelphia Sports loving fan! JD Creates unique and fun t-shirts and stickers. Grab a Gritty sticker for your flyers game with the well known quote that ‘Bad Things Happen in Philadelphia’ or a cool new shirt to sport that represents the Philly culture of climbing the poles to celebrate a big win, or an ode to the big ole orange mascot - Gritty!

Y

ou hear it all the time: self-care. When it comes down to it, it can become overwhelming to break down what self-care itself actually means. What it means to one person may be completely different for another, but discovering what it is to you individually is so important. For me, self-care is a deeper sense of inner connection found through people, places, activities, and different things.

Self-Care noun The act of attending to one’s physical or mental health, generally without medical or other professional consultation. It’s been a rough week, so this weekend is all about self-care through exercise. The products or practices used to comfort or soothe oneself. Seeing friends is my self-care.

Personally, I’ve found learning about my own self-care mindset to be a journey. Not only is self-care a reflection of your own awareness and practice, but it is also very much a reflection of your environment. A few years ago, daily self-care could’ve been drinking a coffee on the campus green and talking with friends between classes. Now, it may be drinking a coffee at Volo Coffeehouse and then strolling down the Towpath to get a good view of the Manayunk Bridge. Hence, my point: Manayunk is self-care, and it provides a variety of outlets for physical, spiritual, social, emotional, and mental self-care.

PHYSICAL The first thing that comes to mind for the physical facet of self-care is exercise and fitness, and this neighborhood is chock-full of gyms, fitness groups, and outdoor spaces for working out. The hill is a great place to start as is the Towpath and Manayunk’s many parks and green spaces. As a runner, I am personally drawn to the local running groups like the Manayunk Running Club and Queer Run which meet at Philadelphia Runner and the Manayunk Beer Runners. Other fitness options include RowZone Fitness, Launchpad Fitness, Trek Bicycle and many more, but beyond that, physical self-care can include everything from treating yourself to some good food, getting a cute haircut, rocking a new tattoo, or strolling the street in a favorite new outfit - all of which can be done right here in Manayunk. Many local health & wellness businesses also can help you tap into the physical realm of things, dtXfy Sauna Studio being one that promotes not only nourishing the body but the mind and spirit as well.

dtXfy Sauna Studio is Self-Care: Denise Lehmann: Founder and CEO of dtXfy Sauna Studio Q: What does self-care mean to you?

A: “Self-care is a balance between the body, mind, and spirit. What I love about the studio is that it is one hundred percent self-care for me, and I use it on a regular basis. It absolutely enhances the connection between all three.” Q: How is dtXfy self-care? A: “I believe that everyone should have access to benefits and natural remedies that dtXfy offers. Through the massage loungers, infrared saunas, and red light therapy, you really start to notice the difference in your body, mind, and spirit. With each session, I notice increased energy, sleep improvement, and mood enhancement, and the entire process is a complete reset for me. Over time, I’ve noticed skin improvement and help with cellular turnover as well. Obviously, the massage chairs feel fabulous as your muscles are kneaded and stretched. With the saunas, you’re sweating as blood and oxygen flows through the body, and then there’s red light therapy which is backed by so much science. Essentially, it helps adjust your circadian rhythm, or your body’s clock, back to its natural state via hormones. With all of the external stimuli in our everyday lives, something as simple as red light therapy can help with regeneration and flow by harnessing the healing wave lengths of the sun."

SPIRITUAL When it comes to spirituality, I believe that like self-care, it’s not one size fits all. One of my favorite college professors taught this mindset. He stated how for some people spirituality might be their place of worship or their religious community, for others it might be another connection to something that inspires the emotion of awe, and for some, it might be both. I find that nature, music, art, and community inspire feelings of spirituality for me. It could be a particular sunset on the bridge or connecting with a band at The Graperoom. Maybe it’s soaking in a piece of art or feeling at home in a particular group or community. One of my favorite personal examples of this is opening exhibit nights at The Look Listen. You’re not only taking in awe-inspiring pieces of art, but you’re meeting the artist, hanging out with fellow art enthusiasts, and seeing gallery owner, Mike Starosciak’s, vision in action.

The Look Listen is Self-Care Mike Starosciak: Gallery Owner of The Look Listen Q: What does self-care mean to you? A: “I think self-care is spending time devoted to nourishing your soul and overall well-being, and with that, there’s a private side focused on finding a sense of calm and tranquility through things like meditation and attention practices. For me, there’s also the public side of finding ways to experience self-care in the community, and I think Manayunk is just so ripe in what it offers.”

featuring a diverse range of artists and gives people the space to experience that. Self-care is an integral part to what The Look Listen is doing for everyone involved. Creating art is very much a self-care practice for the artists. By supporting artists, they can create more and in turn, they can give us the gift of receiving it and getting exposure to it. Really, being a part of that is self-care for me.”

SOCIAL People are everywhere in Manayunk, and no matter the niche, there’s a group to get involved with or an event to attend. Manayunk makes cultivating relationships - new and old - easy as there’s always something going on. Pet lovers can get to know each other and each other’s furry friends at Bark Social, City of Paws, or at Pet Friendly Dog Bakery. Green thumbs can meetup at PHS Pop-Up Beer Garden, Artesano Cafe, or at Safa Plant Co., and I’ve already made my point that the fitness, music, and art scenes in the neighborhood are thriving. The list goes on as there truly is something for everyone, and you can’t forget the plethora of cafes, restaurants, and bars to hang out at. At Fat Lady Brewing, in addition to grabbing a drink, you can meet the community in so many different ways. On any given night, you can find them hosting drag shows, cornhole tournaments, dance parties, D&D sessions, rounds of speed dating, and so much more.

Fat Lady Brewing is Self-Care Ashley Wolf: Director of Operations at Fat Lady Brewing

Q: How is The Look Listen self-care? Q: What does self-care mean to you? A: “There’s just something about being in the physical presence of art that can be so impactful. I find it wild how pigments on a canvas can puncture the depths of your soul, and there’s this awakening that happens. It’s real and can have a profound and sometimes chemical effect on the brain. When starting The Look Listen, the goal was to find a creative space that was accessible and welcoming for all. Now, the gallery hosts rotating art exhibitionists 20

A: “Doing things to be happy. It’s taking time for yourself, and making sure your mental health is on par with what you’re trying to do. Personally, for me, it’s reading, going for a walk, hanging out with friends, or seeing a comedy show. It’s doing things that will leave me feeling fulfilled.”

Manayunk makes cultivating relationships - new and old easy as there’s always something going on.

Q: How is Fat Lady Brewing self-care? A: “We are self-care in the sense that we have a space that’s open to everyone. We invite everyone to come in whether you’re grabbing a drink or just reading from the little library up front, and we hope that everyone can find something here for them. Through our different events, we’re social self-care for people who are into different activities and communities. Whether it’s Nerd Nite, quizzo, or Heyday Athletic meetups, people can enjoy the activity, meet people new and old, and be who they want to be in the space. It’s just the little moments that make you so happy that you just start tearing up like seeing a family having the best time at a drag brunch or two people connecting at speed dating. We really feel good seeing other people feel good, and that’s why coming here is self-care for me.”

EMOTIONAL

MENTAL

Emotional control and intelligence again is a journey and something that develops and changes over time. Self-care in this realm really should focus on processing and expressing emotions in safe and healthy ways. Techniques to do so include journaling, mindfulness, movement, meditation, and different types of therapies. Many services in Manayunk like Intrins Inq, Amee Psychotherapy, and Soul Healn aim to support your emotional growth and self-care overall through a variety of practices catered to your specific needs.

This one is a big one! Mental health and self-care are crucial for overall well-being. Stimulation and challenge help an ever-hungry mind grow, and by learning new skills, trying new things, and doing what you love, you’re fueling your mind. Again, the possibilities are endless in Manayunk. Want to get into carpentry? Take a class at Philadelphia Woodworks right on Umbria Street. Looking to attend wine school? Stop by Jake’s & Cooper’s Wine Bar and Shop on select dates. Want to get lost in a good read? Johnny Destructo’s Hero Complex is your spot for comics, graphic novels, art books, manga, and more. Browse the shelves, grab a comic, and get ready for the most relaxing day.

Johnny Destructo’s Hero Complex is Self-Care Q: What does self-care mean to you?

JD Holden: Owner of Johnny Destructo’s Hero Complex

A: “Self-care, for me, is much more than pampering yourself. It’s something that gives spiritual and emotional rest. It’s something that removes a burden off of you and that makes you feel better.”

Q: What does self-care mean to you?

Q: How is Soul Healn self-care? A: “At Soul Healn, we help people develop strategies and techniques to take their stress away and release emotions trapped in the body and mind. Our bodies hold onto all the different things that we go through, and if we don’t learn how to release all of that negativity out of our bodies, it’s just going to stay with us and cause us to have all these other issues. The more you hold onto trauma in the body, the more it internalizes and causes you to have actual ailments, so I created Soul Healn as a way to get people to move their body and practice well-being through a range of techniques like body movement therapy, breathwork, stretching, and wellness-centered activities. One of my favorite activities is the self-care jar. I help people develop a list of their favorite things to do and have them write them down on color-coded sticks. Each color represents a different type of activity and can include anything from taking yourself on a picnic to going thrifting. Either daily or weekly, they pick a stick, and this intentional action serves as a great reminder of one’s overall self-care and wellness journey."

A: “My attempts at self-care usually involve having a little bit of time to sit and read with either a cup of coffee from Volo or some tea. I love being able to switch off my stress for a little while and enjoy reading a story, whether it be fictional, slice-of-life, or historical. Sometimes my wife and I will sit peacefully and read our different books on the couch, which is a favorite pastime of mine.” Q: How is Johnny Destructo’s Hero Complex self-care? A: “For me, it's a place that I always love to be! I get to spend time with my wife and son throughout the day, and work on projects that I feel passionate about, like my art, shirts, commissions, and stickers. Hearing from my customers, so many of whom have become friends, they tell me that they always feel comfortable and welcome in Hero Complex and even passers-by seem to get a chuckle from my custom shirts, even if they don't buy anything, and just overhearing those little comments and giggles make my day!”

Again, self-care will mean something different to everyone as it reflects both the internal and external. It may be defined as balance, nourishment, happiness, rest, or connection, but at the end of the day, your individual meaning will define what self-care looks like for you. MNYK is self-care in the sense that it can cater to your experience, but discovering those experiences is up to you. 22

Pizza Jawn Starting off strong, we have Pizza Jawn! You have probably seen them all over social media, and may have even watched them as a contestant in the Good Morning America Best Pizza Search, or on Hulu's Best in Dough. David from Pizza Jawn turned his love for dough making into a mobile pizza company. Soon enough, his pizza took off and Pizza Jawn quickly became a popular name around Philadelphia. It did not take long for their brick and mortar location to open on Main Street just a couple years later. Even just by looking at the store's red painted facade with Manayunk written out in pizza letters, you can tell it's going to be great. Pizza Jawn is most known for their thick “grandma” style square pizza made with a seeded bottom and their homemade tomato sauce. This pie is good just the way it is, but it is incredible when it's topped off with a drizzle of Mike’s Hot Honey.

The Goat’s Beard Next up we have another thick style pizza from none other than The Goat’s Beard. The Goat’s Beard serves up delicious American cuisine and hand crafted cocktails. But don't let their American roots fool you, they've mastered Italian inspired dishes as well. The Goat’s Beard’s Detroit Style pizza is a pan-cooked, rectangular pie that gives pizza a whole new meaning. Their fluffy crust is comparable to a focaccia bread and even has aged cheddar baked onto the sides of the pies. The crust is soft yet also has a crispy bottom and they do not shy

away from piling on a plethora of delicious toppings, bringing you a euphoric experience. A must try pie at The Goat’s Beard is their “Smoke Show.” This picture-worthy and smoking hot pie will blow your mind away when you get a glimpse of it as your server carries it to your table. The Smoke Show is made with their signature red sauce, Italian sausage, pepperoni, basil and oregano. It also has 4 different cheeses: mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan, and a couple dollops of ricotta.

Marchiano’s Bakery Marchiano’s Bakery of Philadelphia has sat at 4653 Umbria Street since 1981, but their Italian baking journey goes even further back. The Marchiano family started out baking breads in the basement of their family home a few years prior to opening up their brick and mortar just across the street. The Marchiano family has been a part of the Manayunk community for years and they take great pride in their Italian foods that they get to share with the neighborhood. The bakery is home to delicious tomato pies and specialty breads. Their specialty breads are stuffed with a variety of fillings - from breakfast breads, to broccoli cheddar, sausage and peppers, cheesesteak and more. These are loved as an appetizer or can even be the main course. The real crowd pleaser are their larger than life Philadelphia tomato pies. This sheet pan, rectangular, savory pie is perfect for sharing with others whether you're hosting or attending an event. It can be enjoyed hot, or even cold, and at any time of the day. Their tomato pies are rolled by hand, doused in crushed tomatoes, olive oil and spices before being topped off with grated parmesan cheese. Not only do they have traditional tomato pie, they make one with cheesesteak on it too! How much more Philly can you get? Stop by their bakery to meet the Marchianos and try their mouth-watering tomato pies. Winter 2024 | manayunk.com 33

Manayunk Brewing Company Alongside the Schuylkill River in what was once an old woolen mill lies the Manayunk Brewing Company. Since opening in 1996, Manayunk Brewing Co has served delicious food and over 600 different beers to thousands of customers over the years. They are home to one of the largest outdoor decks in the City of Philadelphia. This restaurant is perfect for any occasion from casual catch ups, to wedding receptions and more. You can dine inside, out, or even take a seat at one of their many bars. If you are a Manayunk local and having some family over to visit - this is the spot to take them! There is something for everyone at the dinner table when visiting the Manayunk Brewing Company. They have an incredibly diverse menu from burgers to sushi, but we're here to focus on Italian pies! Featured on their menu are flatbread style pizzas. The fig jam flatbread is a unique spin on your average flatbread. The thin crust is smothered in fig jam and caramelized onions before it makes its way to the oven. Then it is topped off with feta cheese and fresh arugula.

Jakes and Cooper’s Nestled next to the quiet alley of Ring Street is Jake’s and Cooper’s Wine Bar. For over 35 years, this restaurant has been a staple to Main Street Manayunk. Visitors can dine in the restaurant and purchase their favorite wine at the wine shop inside. This spot is elegant, unique, and convenient for wine-loving locals! Somewhere in between fine dining and affordability lies this Philadelphia gem. When you think of food at Jake’s and Cooper’s, your mind may go right to their award winning crab cakes, but they have pizza options available too. On their menu, you'll find coal fired pizzas like “Lisa’s Pizza,” named after Bruce Cooper’s wife. “Lisa’s Pizza is more colorful than your average pizza- it is not just your typical red sauce pie.” - says Bruce Cooper Jr. This personal pie is decorated with artichokes, oven-roasted tomatoes, olives, spinach and mozzarella cheese. They have 8 other unique pizzas including their peach & chorizo pie, mission fig, and short rib. Each option has decadent toppings that are guaranteed to give you an unforgettable dining experience.

The Couch Tomato Manayunk The famous Couch Tomato has been a part of the Manayunk community for over 20 years. Just off of Main Street, you can find this cozy eatery on Rector Street. This two-concept restaurant is perfect for grabbing takeout for game day, a romantic date night, or catching up with your friends over lunch. Indulge in this local treat onsite or take it home. Upstairs in the “bistro”, you’ll find tableside service and an expanded food and cocktail menu. Staples here are their famous tomato soup and hefty salads packed with flavor. On the ground floor they run their “cafe” featuring grab-and-go counter service. On this menu, you can find pizzas, sandwiches, their salads, and more. You can order their artisan pizzas as a personal pie, or a large pie for sharing with others. One of their many unique dishes is none other than the Godfather pie, a refreshing take on pizza… an offer you can’t refuse. This pizza’s base is a roasted garlic spread, already off to a tasty start! Piled on is farmers cheese, arugula, and roasted red peppers. Come to think of it - you might want to make this a personal pie and keep it all to yourself. It is then topped with prosciutto, grana padano, and garnished with a balsamic reduction glaze.

New Leaf II New Leaf Manayunk is an independently-owned restaurant serving authentic and delicious Japanese and Chinese cuisine. Their large menu has dim sum, noodle dishes, an abundant list of sushi dishes, and so much more. When reading through their plentiful dining options, you’ll come across a peculiar plate called “Sushi Pizza.” This is prepped similar to your regular pizza, a round shaped crust that is cut into triangles. But, you won’t find marinara on this one. New Leaf’s Sushi pizza is packed with umami flavors, and just a little bit of spice. The pizza ‘dough’ is really a thin and flaky scallion pancake. A perfect base for delicious toppings. Toppings include raw sushi, salmon, tuna, lots of roe, and a drizzle of spicy mayo. The pie is sliced and then arranged on a decorative wooden platter. This dish brings a whole new meaning to the work pizza!

Mia Ragazza Buon cibo, Buon vino, Buoni amici | Good food, good wine and good friends On the corner of Main and Gay Streets is Manayunk’s newest Italian restaurant, Mia Ragazza. Brought to you by the owners of The Goat’s Beard is a Central Italian inspired dining experience. On their menu, you’ll find handmade pasta, delicious entrees, and Roman-style pizza. Amongst their delicious cuisine is the shrimp and artichoke pizza. This pie has a crispy crust and is topped with pickled red onions, mozzarella, and a basil pesto sauce. There is no need to travel to Rome when you can visit Mia Ragazza.

Eda’s Pizzaria Inside Lucky's Last Chance branch off, you’ll find small and local businesses running in a collaborative location that owner Chris Barnes describes as a mini Reading Terminal Market. Just up Ridge Avenue, you'll find Lucky's trading Co. which is home to a few businesses including Eda’s Pizzeria. Eda’s Pizzeria is the new neighbor everyone wants to (and should) meet! This hot new pizza joint, named after Chris’ grandmother, brings New Haven style “Apizza” to the Roxborough/Manayunk neighborhood. These Connecticut inspired pies have a soft and chewy crust with a charred crisp. On their menu of 8 unique pies you’ll find their one of a kind signature pie. Eda’s serves up deliciousness with their white pie that is topped with sausage and broccoli rabe. This Pie is a combination of bold flavors that will give you an unforgettable experience.

Pizzeria L’Angolo On the corner of Main Street and Shurs Lane, you’ll travel to Italy at Pizzeria L’Angolo -serving rustic Italian recipes. Relax in their enclosed outdoor seating area, and grab a slice of pizza with a few garlic knots on the side. You’re in for a great time! Pizzeria L’Angolo serves a wide array of pizzas with plenty of different combinations of toppings. They serve traditional round pizza, triangle slices, and pizza della nonna (square). If you're a meat lover, try out their Carnivora: a red pie with sausage, pepperoni, meatballs, mozzarella, and prosciutto. One slice is enough to satisfy your hunger. If you are more of a white pie person, their buffalo pie is for you! The buffalo pie has chicken, blue cheese, and mozzarella.

Franzone’s Manayunk Underneath the Cresson Street train tracks, you'll find a little slice of Italy within Franzone’s Manayunk. Sitting on the corner of Levering St and Cresson St, rests this pizzeria, whose sister restaurants have been a part of the Philadelphia region since 1955. What sets Franzone’s apart from the others is their sauce and how they prepare their pizza. In contrast to the other pizzerias, their classic red sauce differs in its unexpected and subtle sweetness. If you're a fan of sweet red sauce, Franzone’s is for you. They also do something a bit unheard of - the cheese is put on the pie before the sauce is. Each bite into a franzone's pizza you’ll get the perfect cheese-to-sauce ratio. At Franzone’s, you can build your own custom pie, find pizzeria traditions, or try out a gourmet selection. Just a few of the many delicious options include a margarita pie and their cheese steak pie. On the margarita you’ll devour mozzarella cheese, red sauce, and fresh basil. Their cheesesteak pie has their regular red sauce, but amps things up with fried onions and thin beef steak - Philly style!

Riverside Pizza Kalí óreksi! We are going Greek! Riverside pizza is where Greek food meets Italian. Owners Bob and Maria brought this family shop to the Manayunk area in 1990 and it has been a Manayunk mainstay ever since. Though they have traditional pizzas, Riverside is also known for their famous Greek Salads, fantastic gyros, sandwiches, strombolis, and more! It is a great takeout joint and you are guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser when taking Riverside Pizza to your next gathering. If you can't decide on Greek or Italian, Riverside has the perfect option on their menu. The Greek Pizza is destined to satisfy both of those Mediterranean cravings. The Greek Pizza starts off as your classic cheese pie, but its toppings make it so much more. The pie is embellished with red onions, green peppers, feta cheese, and kalamata olive. You can order it as a red or white pie.

Mike’s Pizza Mike’s Pizza is your classic takeout pizza joint. They are most known for their late night hours and convenience. You can grab individual slices to go and so much more including burgers, strombolis, appetizers, and gourmet pies. If you're feeling risky, try out their Hawaiian pie with honey baked ham and pineapple. They have a variety of custom pies, but their classic cheese pizza is their biggest hit. They have large pies with soft dough and cheesy goodness. This spot is sure to satisfy your late night cravings or quick lunch fix.

Benny Peretti’s Opening November 2023 is a branch of Virginia based Benny's Pizzeria.Their motto is “Easy. Breezy. Delicious. Benny’s Pizza.” They focus on the simplicity within pizza serving only three different options of their 28’ pie. You can order a classic cheese pie, a pepperoni pie, or one topped with Italian sausage. Benny’s began on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, but has since expanded to having multiple locations within 5 different states. Benny Peretti’s in Manayunk is their first and only location in Philadelphia. On your next lunch break, grab a slice from Benny’s on Cotton and Main.

Manayunk is home to a large array of pizzaries, but you’ll never get bored of pizza here. Every single location has their definition as to what pizza can be. Step outside of the box, and try something new!

MEET OUR NONPROFITS!

Introducing you to many of the 501(c)3 organizations supporting the Manayunk/Roxborough Community! By Leo Dillinger Photos Provided from Participating Nonprofits

North Light Community Center (Answers Provided by Rhiannon Smith, Director of Development) Year Founded: 1936 Mission Statement: Our Mission is to empower people of all ages and abilities in our communities, especially those most in need, to reach their fullest potential as productive and responsible citizens through initiatives that support and enrich children, teens, and families. What types of services do you provide for the Manayunk/Roxborough Community? North Light provides a comprehensive range of core services aimed at improving the lives of individuals in our community. Our core services include: Children Services: We offer a state-licensed childcare facility with year-round schoolage programs including a Summer Camp and KidZone after school program. By providing a safe and nurturing environment for children, we support families and ensure that children have access to quality learning opportunities, recreational activities and safe, affordable care. Teen Services: Our programs provide leadership training, college and career exposure, 42

arts and recreation activities, and access to technology. These initiatives empower our youth to excel academically, develop essential life skills, and build a foundation for future success. Emergency Services: This program provides comprehensive support to families in the community who are most vulnerable. Services include a bi-weekly food pantry (with delivery services for seniors, disabled) which distributes vital food and household items as well as housing and utility assistance, particularly for those facing eviction or utility shutoffs. We also provide general referrals and social support. At the holidays, an emotional and difficult time for many families, we provide Thanksgiving Baskets, gifts for children through our Adopt a Family program and meals at the end of December to seniors and economically disadvantaged, to ensure that families can enjoy a festive holiday season. How do direct donations support your nonprofit? Direct donations provide general operating support for all of our major programs. They ensure our programs childcare, teens services and emergency services are accessible and affordable for all, despite household income.

What types of volunteer opportunities are available through your organization or are there other ways people and businesses give back to your nonprofit? We happily offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to individuals and businesses looking to give back to our community. We have ongoing volunteer opportunities every Monday and Friday mornings to assist with our bi-weekly food pantry. Volunteers help organize and distribute food to community members in need, ensuring that they have access to essential resources. We also have volunteer drivers who deliver food to seniors, disabled or those sick and shut in. We enthusiastically welcome groups for volunteer days as well. These are a great way for businesses to engage with their communities and make a positive impact. Teams can work on projects such as painting, cleaning, or landscaping to help maintain and improve our facilities. During the holiday season, we also have several volunteer needs for our “Manayunk Meals and More” and the “Adopt A Family” programs. Volunteers can participate in a variety of ways- including wrapping and distributing gifts and helping to prepare and deliver holiday meals to individuals and families, spreading warmth and cheer during the holiday season. We also have a need for volunteers for our fundraising events: Pints for North Light in November and the Gala in the spring. Are there any regular/annual events/fundraisers that you host? If so, what are they? Absolutely! North Light Community Center hosts several fundraisers throughout the year. Just around the corner is Pints for North Light. It’s an excellent way to support our organization while having a great time enjoying local beers and food from various Manayunk breweries and restaurants. This beer tasting fundraiser takes place right on Main Street at Manayunk Brewing on Thursday, November 16th, 2023. North Light holds an annual Gala where we recognize and honor individuals who have

shown dedication to serving our community. This event is a celebration of their efforts and contributions. The upcoming Gala is set for April 20th, 2024, at Levering Mill Tribute House. Winnie’s on Main Street generously hosts “Heart’s o’ Clover” annually close to St. Patrick’s Day. During this special event, all proceeds from the restaurant are donated directly to North Light. It’s a heartwarming way to celebrate and contribute to our mission. And of course- The Manayunk Development Corporation plays a crucial role in supporting North Light by donating ALL of the Manayunk Arts Fest shuttle proceeds directly to our organization. This collaboration helps us continue our work in the community. These events are not only great opportunities for community engagement but also essential for raising funds to support North Light’s programs and services. We encourage you to mark your calendars for these events and join us in making a positive impact on the Manayunk community! What do you love the most about the Manayunk community? Living and working in this neighborhood allows me to experience the best of both worlds. I’m fortunate to be able to patronize numerous fantastic businesses! However, what truly stands out is the incredible generosity and selflessness displayed by countless individuals and businesses in our community. Working at North Light Community Center, I have the privilege of witnessing this spirit of giving on a daily basis. It’s truly inspiring to be among people who consistently dedicate their resources, time and effort to make our community a stronger, better place. Is there anything else you’d like the public to know about your organization? Overall, North Light Community Center is more than just a nonprofit organizationwe are a cornerstone of the Manayunk community, dedicated to making a lasting difference in the lives of our neighbors. We invite you to explore our programs, get involved as a volunteer or supporter, and join us in building a stronger, more vibrant community together. Your support and involvement can help us continue to empower and uplift those we serve! Winter 2024 | manayunk.com 43

Our vision is a Philadelphia region where the playing field is level, and all kids are thriving. What types of services do you provide for the Manayunk/Roxborough Community? Starfinder combines soccer with positive youth development to create a powerful, holistic support system for youth that both challenges and supports them to reach their fullest potential—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Starfinder offers after school, weekend, and summer programs for students in Pre-K to 12th grade. Additionally, Starfinder’s 28,000 square foot turf field is available to rent to the public and helps to fund our programming. Starfinder hosts adult pick up soccer games on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Friday nights. How do direct donations support your nonprofit? Direct donations fund our 44

Additionally, Starfinder is happy to accept in-kind donations such as new or gently used soccer equipment and school supplies. Are there any regular/annual events/fundraisers that you host? If so, what are they? Starfinder hosts three signature event fundraisers throughout the year. Starfinder Cup and Cornhole Championship, a tournament for corporate and community supporters, occurs in October. Starfinder’s Cocktails with a Kick gala occurs in March and the Starfinder Golf Championship in May. Throughout the school year, Starfinder also hosts soccer tournaments for youth teams from around the city. What do you love the most about the Manayunk community? The location allows people from all over the city to take advantage of what Manayunk has to offer. The business community is also very supportive of the nonprofit community. Is there anything else you’d like the public to know about your organization? We’re not just soccer, but we open our doors to youth from all over the Philadelphia region. We use the community-building power of soccer to offer a deep experience through which participants learn skills, gain confidence, and develop resilience to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

Manayunk Roxborough Art Center (Answers Provided By Heather Diacont Rinehart, Curriculum Director) Year Founded: 1953 Mission Statement: Artists bringing people together - Our mission is to develop, for members and the public, an appreciation of fine arts, literary expression, and creative and cultural endeavors. We are committed to being a forum for artists, writers and the general public. What types of services do you provide for the Manayunk/Roxborough Community? MRAC offers a diverse community of visual artists, writers, and poets who are invested in their work and the community at large. We gather, make art, and enjoy discussion in the spirit of creatiive thinking that is so enriching to the human experience. Our historic space is nestled in a secluded nook off of Green Lane, and boasts an inviting gallery space, studio/classroom area, and an outdoor courtyard. Members have an opportunity to show and sell their work regularly at our monthly gallery openings, as well as the potential to be featured as a solo artist. For our writer/poet members, we host an ongoing series of virtual and in person poetry readings and have established a working relationship with the Schuylkill Valley Journal, a literature and arts publication highlighting the works of local talent. MRAC also offers art classes to the public, covering a range of topics from drawing and painting, to meditative art making. Additionally, we host a number of free artist-led events throughout the year. How do direct donations support your nonprofit? Donations are greatly appreciated and necessary to continuing our work. We use funding to maintain and improve our historic space, assist our artists with visibility and marketing their work, and make sure that our supply closet stays full of fresh materials for artists in the classroom. What types of volunteer opportunities are available through your organization or are there other ways people and businesses give back to your

nonprofit? Becoming an active member is the best way to support our nonprofit. MRAC is a volunteer run organization and we have a long list of needs from facilities management to social media expertise. We are in constant need of folks to sit the gallery, for example, to greet guests and facilitate sales to support our artists. We are also looking for teaching artists to run workshops and classes for the community. Occasionally, we offer opportunities for young people to earn community service hours, either working at the center or offsite in artistic and collaborative ways. A recent partnership with the Leon H. Sullivan Trust is a shining example of this type of work. Get in touch if you’d like to know more or lend a hand! Are there any regular/annual events/fundraisers that you host? If so, what are they? MRAC hosts a gallery opening on the second Sunday of each month, featuring the latest work of our current members. These are stunning, one of a kind works of art made by devoted local artists. A portion of the proceeds from each sale will go toward MRAC. This October, we will diverge from our schedule a bit, and have our opening on Saturday, October 14 to coincide with our Open House event. There will be live music, demonstrations, opportunities for artmaking, and of course, plenty of beautiful work on view. What do you love the most about the Manayunk community? Manayunk has so much to offer, it’s difficult to pin it down to one favorite aspect. For me, it is a place where people of all walks of life, so many wonderfully different foods, old and new architecture, and green and gray spaces all roll together. Maybe it’s the hills. Is there anything else you’d like the public to know about your organization? MRAC is open to all - creative folks, makers, observers, and appreciators of the arts. Our members are our strength. We offer memberships to individuals as well as families - and we love our young artists! So whether you are a professional, or just starting your creative journey , we’d love to have you join us! We plan on hosting our next Community Fair in March 2024. Please stay tuned for our Holiday Bash on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11am-2pm at Starfinder Foundation. We are joining hands to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of children and families in need within our community. Together, we will be providing a day filled with Holiday fun, music, food, pictures with Santa, winter coats, groceries, toys, gift cards, and more! What do you love the most about the Manayunk community? We love the support of our fellow Manayunk businesses and nonprofits and of course, the people in the community. We appreciate the genuine connections we’ve made and the shared commitment to making Manayunk a welcoming place for all!
