ISLAMIC COLLGE OF MELBOURNE- PMDL

Completing the protective western ring that surrounds and creates the ICOM central heart space, the three storey building design complements the established architectural language developed on the campus. At the heart of the design rests the Tree of Knowledge. Perched on the upper level and referenced on the lower level, this tree symbolises the original classroom and the quest for knowledge.

Client: Islamic College of Melbourne

Location: Tarneit, Victoria

Project Lead: Bryce Stoneham

Project Phase: Tender set

Programs: Revit

Description:

Facing Butterfly Boulevard, the building offers an identifiable entrance for ICOM’s Before and After Care Program with direct access from the existing carpark. External access is also provided to a dedicated learning space to teach Quran that supports the programmes to be offered outside of typical college hours.

PMDL McGlashen Everist were engaged by ICOM to prepare a concept plan and to complete design and documentation for a permanent building – An administration and Wellness Centre - to be constructed between the existing Administration building and the Gymnasium building

Internal to the campus, the building extends to fill the gap between the Administration. And Gym buildings. The existing verandah extends as a continuous link on the first-floor level.

Responsibilities:

• Joinery works

• Modelling

REDEVELOPMENT

• Working on technical details with team for Tender submission

• Understanding clients brief to ensure design intent is met

• Documentation for Tender submission

Inspired by ‘The Lion King’, the northern projection on the first-floor level provides a fantastic vantage point for the principal’s office enjoying views across the campus. The strategic location places the principal at the heart of the school and accessibly connected to all, students, and staff alike.

Contemporary learning areas for specialist subjects including Drama, Textiles, Art, Arabic and Technology are provided on the first floor with direct link to the first floor of the Current 1B primary school and recent Primary School extension.

Multipurpose and function spaces that will support ICOM and its school community complete the upper level of the building. This space includes a terrace and foyer space that perches above the heart of the college with views to the north, west and east, across the campus.
