Introduction

A Message from His Excellency: | Dr. Abdullah M. Al Rubaish, President of University of Dammam Since its establishment only five years ago, the University of Dammam (UD) has already accomplished many of its objectives in the field of infrastructure, as well as in the field of academia by creating, developing and enhancing the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic programs. The University has successfully overcome several obstacles and challenges associated with a growing academic institution and has matured into a leading international university ready to guide the next generation into the future. We are steadfast in our commitment to fulfilling the goals and developmental endeavors of the Kingdom, enshrined in its strategic plans; represented by the Ninth Development Plan, The AAFAQ Plan for Higher Education as well as the National Strategy for transforming the Kingdom into a knowledge-based community as well as a knowledge-based economy. The most critical elements in these strategies are the preparation of our graduates for a knowledge-based community and the active role they will play in the construction of a knowledge-based economy. With these goals in mind it is the responsibility of the administration, faculty and staff of UD to ensure that the students receive and have access to all the required resources for success, that the graduates of UD will not only be ready for a knowledge-based community and economy, but they will be the innovative leaders. Education is the heart of the knowledge-based community because it is based on the foundations of research, innovation and learning. Hence, UD has focused on building the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; skills through the improvement of student performance by using an outcome-based education method, which focuses on the student. This method also reinforces the acquisition and mastering of vital skills in the areas of: entrepreneurship, digital technology, problem solving, critical thinking and the integration of learning with knowledge, which all contribute to increasing the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; career opportunities in the labor market. The University is also dedicated to employing communication and information technology in education, to using quality open-sourced educational methodologies, providing demanding but inspiring academic programs, encouraging innovation in teaching in addition to monitoring the quality of academic programs through internal and external quality systems. The University, as the mechanism of innovation and growth, is moving towards enhancing its role in the field of research. UD has and continues to focus on research projects that contribute to the solutions of national, regional and international problems in a way that also creates and advances partnerships with the community. UD supports excellence in research and innovation in order to positively contribute to national research priorities, while at the same time ensuring intellectual property and steadfastly supporting both ethical norms and standards of research. UD provides an ideal environment conducive to carrying out exceptional research as well as encouraging collaborative research within the University or in association with national and international institutions. The University of Dammam opened its doors to women and men in 1975 with two pioneering colleges: the College of Medicine and the College of Architecture. Almost four decades later this academic institution has grown into a leading research university with 21 colleges spread throughout the Eastern Province and a student population of over 45,000. As a preeminent research-based institution, the University of Dammam continues to grow and develop, continually assessing and improving its curricula and expanding its academic capabilities in all disciplines, while at the same time engaging the public in addressing environmental and community challenges. The colleges, deanships, centers and the scientific and service departments collectively manage the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s business.

The University Council is responsible for reviewing and supervising all academic, financial and managerial aspects of the University. The Council is also responsible for implementation, throughout the University, of the directives from the Ministry of Higher Education. The first University Council meeting took place at the University of Dammam on December 27, 2009.

College of Medicine | The College of Medicine at the University of Dammam was established by Royal Decree No. H/67 dated on 28/7/1375 AH (1975 CE), and the first group of undergraduate medical students was admitted in that same year and graduated in 1981. The College of Medicine pioneered postgraduate medical education in the Kingdom. Its postgraduate programs were the first to be recognized by the Arab Board for Medical Specialties, the Royal Colleges in Ireland and the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. Since its inception, the College of Medicine has been organizing Continuous Professional Development Programs designed for all health professionals in the Eastern Province and the Kingdom at large.Â The College also has participated in health education for the general public through local, national and regional information media.

Promote the understanding and application of Islamic values and traditions in all aspects of the medical practice. Enable undergraduate medical students to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become competent professionals and to develop lifelong habits of scholarship and service. Advance knowledge through research in all areas related to health care. These areas include the basic sciences, clinical sciences, cultural and behavioral aspects of medicine, methods for the delivery of health care and the medical education process. Provide postgraduate education through residency programs in clinical medicine and advanced degree programs in the basic medical sciences. College of Dentistry | The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken the utmost pride in the number and variety of academic programs offered at its many universities. With time the Kingdom has witnessed the development of new scientific disciplines as well as the establishment of many colleges and universities. The College of Dentistry at the University of Dammam fosters the dissemination of knowledge in all areas of dentistry and promotes development in dental education, treatment and research. Following a ministerial directive in 1430 AH/2009 CE, the College of Dentistry became part of the newly established University of Dammam (formerly known as the Dammam campus of King Faisal University). The College of Dentistry began accepting male students in the fall of 2001 and female students in the fall of 2011. Since 2013 over 135 dentists have graduated from the College.

College of Nursing | Recently the World Health Organization honored the profession of nursing and the crucial role that nurses play in our daily lives by listing it as one of the principal contributing factors in the improvement of human health. It is a profession based on scientific grounds, specialized knowledge, and finely honed skills based on a set of principles derived from the behavioral, health and nursing sciences. Nursing is governed not only by specific legislation, but also by a deep desire to help and nurture others. In order to meet the Saudi Arabian Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s increasing demand for nurses with a high level of knowledge, technical expertise and the ability to keep up with the successive changes in the health care field at the local, regional and global levels, the Department of Nursing was established under the College of Medicine and Applied Medical Sciences at King Faisal University by Royal Decree no. 27/9 in 141 0AH/1989 CE. This was the first program in the Eastern Province to offer the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In 2002 the Department of Nursing became the College of Nursing in order to meet the demands for qualified nurses throughout the Kingdom. The College of Nursing was the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its graduates are recognized as highly trained health care professionals whose skills are in demand not only throughout the region, but throughout the Kingdom. The curriculum of the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN), at the University of Dammam, is distinguished by its comprehensiveness and objectivity. It has been reviewed in both a scientific and methodological way in order to match accredited curricula in International Universities, academic developments and applications and to meet the requirements of the NCAAA. The curriculum also deals with the health problems peculiar to the Saudi Arabian community, so that they have a clear understanding and appreciation of their future clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; specific concerns. Duration of the Program: 4 years, 8 semesters plus one year of internship. The student is not allowed to move from one level to another until he/she fulfills the prerequisites of the previous level. The Program comprises 3 phases: Phase one: Preparatory year program (first year; first 2 semesters) The Preparatory year program applies to all students who are admitted by the colleges participating in the Preparatory year. The study in the Preparatory year program comprises two semesters. It could be extended to one more semester in the summer. Students have to pass the Preparatory year program, and then they will be allowed to continue their studies in the college in which they were initially accepted, provided that: The student passes all of the courses offered in the Preparatory year program. The student obtains a cumulative average of at least 300 out of 500 at the end of the second semester of the Preparatory year. The student receives a minimum grade of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Câ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in all the English language courses or a score of 450 in the TOEFL test. College of Applied Medical Sciences | The College of Applied Medical Sciences (CAMS) at the University of Dammam was established in order to keep abreast with the developments in the field of medical care and to qualify specialists in the field of applied medical sciences in order to provide support and health care services for the community. CAMS has a variety of academic programs that meet the needs of the society with qualified technical professionals in numerous fields of medicine: curative, preventive and rehabilitative in order to keep pace with the rapid developments in diagnosis, treatment techniques and scientific research. The College of Applied Medical Sciences was established in 1419 AH/1999 CE. The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) was the first department in the College, which was followed by the Respiratory Care Department (RC), the first of its kind not only in the Kingdom, but also in the Gulf. Later the Department of Physical Therapy (PT) and the Department of Health Information Technology and Management (HIMT) were established in order to meet the demands in the labor market. In addition to the four initial departments, another four joined CAMS later on. The Department of Environmental Health (EH) prepares highly qualified people who study and evaluate environmental problems and the health affects on humans. The Department of Radiological Sciences (RS) trains specialists in radiation technology to work in hospitals and other specialized medical centers. Department of Clinical Laboratory Science The Clinical Laboratory Science Department was established in 1999 and since then it has produced qualified laboratory specialists who play a critical role alongside doctors and nurses in the day-to-day business of healthcare, as well as significantly contributing to medical research projects. The graduates receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), after they successfully complete the four year long program of study. Department of Respiratory Care The Respiratory Care Program develops and refines the clinical and critical thinking skills necessary for the effective and safe delivery of respiratory care modalities. Department of Physical Therapy Physical Therapy (PT), also known as physiotherapy, is a dynamic profession with an established theoretical base and widespread clinical applications. It is concerned with the promotion of human health, the prevention of disability and the evaluation and rehabilitation of patients disabled by pain, disease or injury. Physical therapeutic measures are used in the treatment. Physical therapy is provided by or under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, a specialist in physical therapy. Physical therapists, also known as physiotherapists, are professionally educated at the college or university level and also may obtain clinical specialist certification. The University of Dammamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department of Physical Therapy was the second physical therapy program to be established in Saudi Arabia. In 2000 it was opened for male students and then in 2006 it was opened for female students.

Department of Health Information Management and Technology Health Information Management and Technology is concerned with planning, collecting, storing, retrieving and the dissemination of health care data that doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers rely on to deliver quality healthcare. Along with the advances and innovations taking place around the world in all disciplines, especially in the field of information technology, highly qualified personnel in the field of Health Information Management (HIM) are continuously in demand. Department of Radiological Sciences The Department of Radiological Sciences was established in 2008 for male students and a similar program for female students is currently in the planning stages. Department of Environmental Health The Environmental Health Department offers courses in environmental studies and prepares students to become environmental health specialists who monitor the health and safety conditions in all areas of the Kingdom. The department focuses on all areas of environmental health, including: water, air, soil and how to maintain them. Department of Cardiac Technology Cardiac technology is an allied health profession specifically focused on the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiac and vascular disease. Department of Clinical Nutrition The Clinical Nutrition program offers the students a strong foundation in the clinical, teaching, research, and management domains through four years of full-time study. College of Applied Medical Sciences | Hafr Al Batin In 1409 AH/1988 CE the Health Institute at Hafr Al Batin was established. This institute offered a program of study that took three and a half years to complete with an additional four-month internship program. The students who completed this program received an intermediate certificate. As the institute grew and matured it started to offer a two-year nursing diploma program in 1997. A decade later in 2007 the Health Institute of Hafr Al Batin officially became the Health Science College for Women and a part of King Faisal University in Dammam, specializing in nursing and midwifery. The typical course of study took three years with a six-month internship period. Upon completion the students received an intermediate certificate. In 2009 the Health Science College for Women became part of the University of Dammam. In 2010 the Health Science College for Women changed not only its name but its curriculum as well, and officially became the College of Applied Medical Sciences with eight new departments.

College of Clinical Pharmacy | The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made the welfare and health care of its citizens a priority by establishing numerous medical schools throughout the Kingdom that specialize in the following health care fields: medical, dental, pharmacy and applied medical sciences. With current developments in both the private and government hospitals, the pharmacist’s work has evolved from only not only compounding and dispensing medicines but to actively participating in patient care. This has led to changes in the curricula of existing pharmacy schools in order to be fully prepared for this new role. Colleges of pharmacy are now designed as “Colleges of Clinical Pharmacy” with the focus on patient care. One such example is the College of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Dammam, which was established by a Royal Decree (Number 5088/MB) on 7/8/1432 AH (8/7/2011 CE). The College since then has endeavored to deliver a well structured and academically sound PharmD program for their pharmacy students. In 2013 two postgraduate programs were proposed, an MS/PhD in Clinical Pharmacy/Pharmacy Practice as well as an MS/PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences which are both currently in the planning stages as well as a proposed residency or fellowship program for our pharmacy graduates.

The PharmD Program is a five-year full time undergraduate pharmacy program, which is offered by the College of Clinical Pharmacy under the auspices of the College of Medicine, the Office of the Dean for Preparatory and Support Studies along with other offices. The University of Dammam is on the semester system. The instruction in the PharmD Program is in English and the program consists of 188 credit hours in total. The program includes both theoretical and practical sessions over a period of five years that follow the preliminary Preparatory year that is completed in the Health track. 70

Departments | Department of Pharmacy Practice: This is the largest department connected to the PharmD Program and it encompasses two areas: pharmacy practice and social and administrative pharmacy. The former is primarily concerned with pharmaceutical care (or medication therapy management) for patients and all aspects of the practice in diverse settings, whereas the latter is involved in the social and administrative aspects of pharmacy, i.e. health psychology, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, public health, pharmacy management, etc. Department of Pharmaceutics: This department teaches and trains students on the manufacture of various pharmaceutical dosage forms (e.g. tablets, capsules, suppositories and injections), biopharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical materials. It also performs quality tests on each preparation according to official formularies or guidelines. Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry: This department is responsible for chemistry topics related to the pharmaceutical industry, chemical compositions, structure-activity relationships and analytical pharmaceutical chemistry. Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology: This department covers pharmaceutical and health products in terms of their mechanism of action, adverse effects (i.e. side effects and allergies), interactions with other medicines, food or diseases, including basic and applied pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Moreover, it deals with different types of toxic substances, causes of addiction and their management. Department of Natural Products and Alternative Medicine: The department is involved in herbal and medicinal products, chemical compositions and their impacts on the human body. Additionally, complementary and alternative medicine is also a crucial area of interest. In addition to the five departments above, some departments of the College of Medicine, i.e. Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, will also help arrange many courses for the first two years of the PharmD Program as detailed in the program outline and course descriptions.

College of Architecture and Planning | The College of Architecture and Planning was established in 1395 AH/1975 CE at King Faisal University which is now known as the University of Dammam. Since that time, the College of Architecture and Planning has become the cornerstone for Architecture, Planning and Built Environment Education in Saudi Arabia. The College is made up of five departments: Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Building Science and Technology, Landscape Architecture and Interior Architecture. Over the last four decades, the College has played a critical role in training and educating talented professionals who have significantly contributed to Saudi Arabiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contemporary history. In fact over 1,600 Saudi engineers (1,300 males and 300 females) have graduated over the years, as well as over 160 engineers from other nationalities. In addition to the various bachelor of science degrees that are offered, the College also offers master degrees in the disciplines of Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Building Science and Technology and Landscape Architecture. A doctorate program is also offered in Urban and Regional Planning. Over 200 students have completed their graduate degrees at the College of Architecture and Planning. Since the beginning of the 1426/1427 AH, 2005/2006 CE, academic year the College has offered a PhD degree in Urban and Regional Planning. The Urban and Regional Planning doctoral students are prepared to begin their professional lives in a variety of areas ranging from academia, where they would conduct research as well as teach, to a career in urban planning in either the public or private sectors, helping shape the Kingdomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cities. College of Engineering | The College of Engineering at the University of Dammam is one of the most unique engineering schools in the Kingdom, offering degree programs not available anywhere else in Saudi Arabia. Construction Engineering Department: Construction Engineering includes the following: planning, managing and building establishments like highways, bridges, airports, railways, buildings, dams and reservoirs. The building of such projects requires knowledge in engineering basics, business administration, procedures, economics and human behavior. The professional construction engineerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s duties may include: designing temporary buildings, ensuring and controlling quality, planning and surveying the construction site, testing the construction materials on the site, surveying layout to construction sites, designing concrete mixtures, estimating costs, planning and scheduling, safety engineering, materials and purchases, picking equipment, engineering costs and budget control. Construction engineering differs from building management in the level of mathematics, sciences and engineering required to solve the problems and processes involved in building.

Environmental Engineering Department : Environmental Engineering concentrates on the application of the fundamentals of science and engineering towards the improvement of the environment (air, water and earth resources) for the provision of potable and palatable water, clean air and land and for treatment of polluted areas. Environmental engineering incorporates: water and air quality management, abatement of pollution, reuse and recycling, hazardous solid waste disposal, general health issues and knowledge of related law to environmental engineering. Environmental engineering also involves environmental impact assessment for proposed projects in building and industry. An environmental engineer is concerned with environmental behavior and hazardous solid waste management in the form of studies to evaluate these hazards, offering advice in regards of treatment and enclosure and establishing systems to prevent accidents. Other concerns of the environmental engineer are: design of municipal and industrial water supply and wastewater treatment systems. This is in addition to responsibilities all over the globe regarding environmental issues such as: the effects of acid rain, ozone layer depletion, water pollution, air pollution from vehicles and industrial sources. Biomedical Engineering Department : Biomedical Engineering is defined as the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology. This field aims to understand, modify, or control biological systems, as well as design and build products that are capable of monitoring physiological functions and assisting in diagnosing and treating patients. Biomedical Engineering seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine: it combines the design and problem solving skills of engineering with the medical and biological sciences in order to improve healthcare diagnosis, monitoring and therapy. Recently, biomedical engineering has emerged as its own discipline. Most of the work done by biomedical engineers focuses on research and development, covering a wide range of subfields, such as: biomedical electronics, bioinstrumentation, biomaterials, biomechanics, tissue and genetic engineering, clinical engineering, medical imaging, rehabilitation engineering, systems physiology, bio bionanotechnology, and neural engineering.

College of Sciences | The College of Sciences at the University of Dammam was the first University in the Eastern Province to offer bachelor degree programs in the sciences for women. The College was founded in 1399 AH/1979 CE and four years later, 112 students graduated from the College of Sciences. Since that time, the College has steadily grown with over 216 faculty members and over 3,100 graduates. In 1983 postgraduate programs for teaching assistants and lecturers from within and outside the college were set up and in 2004, master and PhD programs were implemented. Several of the Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s faculty members have received prestigious academic awards of excellence in scientific research, such as the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Almaraiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Award for Science Innovation, the Scopus World Award and the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology Award (KACST). In addition, the College has received the Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Award for Government Excellence during its third session in the Standards of Organization and Procedures. Community College | Dammam Established in 1434 AH/2013 CE, the Community College in Dammam (CCD) is a new academic institution that offers educational alternatives to high school graduates in order to meet the increasing demands and changes in the labor market. College of Liberal Arts | The College of Liberal Arts was opened in Dammam under the supervision of the General Presidency for Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Education in 1979 and was one of the first academic institutions available to women in the Eastern Province. The College began with five departments: Islamic Studies, Arabic Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, History and Geography and quickly expanded in order to accommodate Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and PhD candidates, who would later go on to become not only faculty members, but administrators at the College of Liberal Arts. In 2002 the College of Liberal Arts began the process of collaboration with the Ministry of Education. In 2004 it came under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education when it became part of King Faisal University, which in 2009 became known as the University of Dammam. The College of Liberal Arts has recently expanded to include several new departments. In 2010 the Department of Library and Information Science was opened and in 2011 the Department of Sociology and Social Work was established. In 2013 the Department of Communication and Information Technology got its start.

College of Education | The College was established in 1396 AH/1976 CE as a Math and Science Center by the Ministry of Education in the Murikibat neighborhood of Dammam. In the following year it became an intermediate college and in 1409 AH/1988 CE the College began awarding bachelor of arts degrees under the authority of the Dammam Teachers College. In 2007 the College joined King Faisal University and changed its name to the College of Education. In 2009 under a a royal decree King Faisal University became the University of Dammam. College of Education | Hafr Al Batin The College of Education was originally established in 1412 AH/ 1991 CE as the Intermediate College for Women. At the beginning, the College only granted associate of arts degrees with a two year long program of study. In 1997 it became the College of Education for Women and the new degree program of study was for four years and bachelor degrees were awarded. The Deanship of Admissions and Registration | The Office of the Dean of Admissions and Registration at the University of Dammam is the catalyst for academic progress at the University. This office oversees most of the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; affairs throughout their time at the University, beginning with the application process, through their time as students and even after their graduation. The responsibilities borne by the Office of Admissions and Registration can be summed up as follows: Admission of students to the University, manage and control their academic records, provide academic advisement, announce examination results, and follow-up with the specific college concerned to make sure that all requirements are met for graduation for each student. The Deanship of Preparatory and Supporting Studies | The Preparatory year program at the University of Dammam was initiated in 1429 AH/ 2008 CE in the College of Architecture and Planning and since that time it has expanded to include numerous other colleges at the University. In 2010 the Office of the Dean for Preparatory and Supporting Studies was established in order to manage the various Preparatory year programs at the University of Dammam. The Preparatory year gives the students an opportunity to explore a variety of academic disciplines, while at the same time earning university credits that count towards their graduation. The coursework through this preliminary year not only helps prepare, hence the term Preparatory year, the students for the rigors of academia, but it helps them narrow down and define their interests by exposing them to a broad range of disciplines. By the end of this year the students have a much clearer idea of what they want to study and are prepared to begin their specializations the following year. Students must successfully pass their Preparatory year courses in order to continue their studies. There will be an opportunity for students to retake courses if needed during the summer following the Preparatory year.

The Deanship of Scientific Research | The Deanship of Scientific Research at the University of Dammam is dedicated to expanding and reinforcing its commitment to research, creative activity and intellectual curiosity. The Office of the Dean of Scientific Research expects faculty and staff to continue their professional development through active participation in research and other scholarly pursuits. The Office of the Dean of Scientific Research is committed to providing the optimum environment to carry out innovative research and realize new discoveries across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Moreover, the Office of Scientific Research will take steps designed to generate and sustain an environment where faculty and students can collaborate in research that will contribute towards the economic development of the area and towards improving the health status of the population. The primary goal of the Deanship of Scientific Research is to provide and sustain an environment of ethical scientific research and discovery that creates new knowledge and opportunities for economic development and diversification, as well as promote an improved quality of life in the communities we serve. In addition, the Office will use its extensive facilities and those of the Prince Mohammed Center for Research and Consultation Studies, both of which will be staffed by experienced scientists, clinicians, technicians and administrators, as a platform to conduct research that will lead to new innovations in industry, clinical research, stem cell technology and genomics as well as explore their future applications. The Deanship of Library Affairs | The Office of the Dean of Library Affairs was first established at King Faisal University in 1400 AH/1980 CE and in 2009 it became part of the University of Dammam. The Office of the Dean of Library Affairs at the University of Dammam is responsible for all 29 libraries found throughout the many campuses of the University of Dammam including: the original central library, which was founded almost four decades ago on the main campus, the library at King Fahd Hospital, the College of Medicine Library, the Central Library for Women and the libraries of the colleges in Qatif, Jubail, Nairiyah, Khafji and Hafr Al Batin. The staff of the University of Dammam’s libraries is engaged in providing a wide range of services to the academic community. These services include the careful and informed selection of relevant learning resources and the implementation of a streamlined organization and retrieval system for both print and electronic resources that cater to the academic community’s requirements for information, knowledge and research. The Office of Information and Communication Technology provides all university employees with the essential services and latest tools and equipment that meet their technology needs. The selection of an initial technology infrastructure provides a golden opportunity to effect technology migration path planning that will anticipate needs. This entails not just selecting technologies, but also auditioning and selecting a vendor team that can become the University of Dammamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s partner in creating an assured migration path for the University of Dammam, towards becoming a professional preeminent university in the age of LMS 3.0 Develop the Capacity of Faculty, Staff and Students to Engage Effectively in e-Learning and Distance Learning. Starting in the first year, and continuing throughout a five-year period, high quality training and professional development will be an essential element of the Strategic Plan for e-Learning and distance learning. Craft Policies, Processes and Practices Necessary to Support Professional e-Learning and e-Scholarship. The University of Dammam should identify all policies and practices that require attention and recommend a schedule of corrective actions. By the time these impediments are corrected, e-Learning and distance learning will have become familiar to a significant minority of the staff, facilitating the adoption by the majority, and will be positioned to deliver increasingly substantial benefits to the University of Dammam. Develop e-Learning and Distance Learning Services and Offerings. Most of the e-Learning and distance learning solutions described above will emerge bottom-up from efforts in the colleges, with primary responsibility being placed on the college coordinators and the e-Learning divisions developed in each college. Prince Mohamed Bin Fahd Center For Research And Consultation Studies | The Eastern Province, which is the largest province in Saudi Arabia, lies along the Arabian Gulf. The capital of the Eastern Province is Dammam, but the Eastern Province has other major population centers, such as Al Hasa in the south. The Eastern Province is the center of the Kingdomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oil and petrochemical industry. Since its establishment in 1975, the University of Dammam has chosen research as one of its three main areas of professional activity with teaching and service being the other two. The University of Dammam houses many colleges including the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Architecture and Planning, Applied Medical Sciences, Engineering, Nursing and several community based colleges in the Eastern Province. The Ministry of Higher Education recently stated, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Ministry of Higher Education is striving towards the attainment of the goals of the Eighth National Development Plan which focuses on the support and encouragement of scientific research and technical development to augment the efficiency of the national economy.â&#x20AC;? The primary goal of the Prince Mohamed Bin Fahd Bin Abdulaziz Center for Research and Consultation Studies is to provide the optimal environment for highly innovative basic and applied research to take place. In pursuing this goal, the Center will conduct research that is directed towards improving the health of the population of the Eastern Province and the surrounding areas by developing leading edge medical therapies. In addition, it will use its extensive facilities that will be staffed by experienced scientists, technicians and engineers, as a platform to conduct research that will lead to new innovations in stem cell technology as well as future applications. Univeristy Counseling Center | The University Counseling Center at the University of Dammam was established in an effort to offer comprehensive counseling services for our students. Documents Center | The University of Dammam has worked on establishing the Documents Center with the aim of preserving all types of documents from the University itself, the Eastern Province and other documents related to the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heritage. The Center will also work on organizing and preserving all documents generated by the University, as well as adopting successful ways that will ensure the safety and confidentiality of the content. Office of Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange | A key objective of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Plan, which was formulated by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Planning, is to establish programs to enhance the position of the Kingdom in the strategic technologies that are the most important to the Kingdom. These technologies have to be imported and installed in the Kingdom through universities, research institutes and other concerned sectors. The University of Dammam, from its position as one of the leading universities in the Kingdom, would like to contribute effectively to this National Plan. The Office of Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange plays a pivotal role in facilitating the transfer of technologies by establishing relationships with leading institutes in the world.

Goals |

The mission of the Office of Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange is to promote, coordinate and support the creation of relevant international collaboration to generate opportunities for the transfer of innovative technologies in education, research and training to contribute to the economic development of the area.

Establish regional and international links with renowned, specialized educational and research institutions. Act as a central coordinating office for the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s international initiatives, ventures and activities. Encourage, facilitate and support faculty and staff participation in international projects, programs and research. Develop avenues of opportunity for faculty and staff to receive training in international centers. The Office initiates negotiations for postgraduate programs that will be run jointly by the University of Dammam and collaborating international centers in Europe, the USA, Canada and Australia. Enhance the international status of the University of Dammam. Maintain a central database containing data and information on all international undertakings. Facilitate collaborative research with distinguished research centers.

Endowments. Long term: scientific chairs for more than 10 years. Short tem: scientific chairs for 2 or more years.

Funding requirements |

For long-term chairs the minimum funding amount is five million riyals. For short term chairs the minimum funding amount is two million riyals.

The donor’s name will appear in affiliated facilities, such as a laboratory, office, etc. The name of the donor will be noted in affiliated research publications, workshops, seminars, etc.
