An elongated oval of just 41 by 14 kilometres, Tobago manages a surprising diversity. Rich in natural allure – deserted palm-lined beaches, glowing coral reefs and a wealth of lush rainforest – the island offers something for every taste. Tobago’s greatest appeal, however, is that it’s a place where locals and tourists co-exist, with everyone frequenting the same beaches, bars and nightclubs. Tobago is breathtakingly beautiful: beaches are pristine and the landscape is left largely to its own devices. The flat coral and limestone plateau of the southwest tip has fantastic white-sand beaches such as Pigeon Point and Store Bay, while the Caribbean coast boasts a string of spectacular shorelines, from Castara to picturesque Englishman’s Bay, as well as rugged swathes of sand where hotels run excursions to watch giant turtles laying their eggs. Strong currents provide excellent surfing possibilities, and Tobago is a terrific, inexpensive place to learn to dive: there’s plenty of drift diving for the more experienced, while the many reefs just offshore make for fantastic snorkelling and glass-bottom boat rides.

THE CARIBBEAN COAST
With calm, clear waters, Tobago’s Caribbean coast is rugged, but still beautiful, with undeveloped swathes of yellow sand at Englishman’s Bay and Bloody Bay, backed by greenery rather than hotel resorts. Excellent for snorkelling and diving with several reefs, plus inland you will find the cool woodlands of the Tobago Forest Reserve, the oldest protected rainforest in the Western hemisphere and a great spot for hiking and wildlife. Closer to the southwest at Stonehaven Bay and Turtle Beach you will find leatherback turtles laying their eggs in the sand March – September. A trip to the Caribbean coast is incomplete without Buccoo Bay, where you will find the Sunday School outdoor party every weekend with steelpan and folk dancing, as well as the annual Buccoo goat race festival every Easter.
SCARBOROUGH
Tobago’s capital Scarborough is home to Fort King George including a lighthouse, landscaped gardens and cannons pointing out to sea with incredible views, as well as Botanical Gardens in central Scarborough with 18 acres of soothing oasis. On this side of the island you will also find Bacolet Beach, a prestigious area with luxury hotels and the setting for Walt Disney’s Swiss Family Robinson.
THE WINDWARD COAST
Tobago’s southern shoreline is spanned by the rugged coast and villages, a contrast to the southwest. With fantastic scenery, the drive from Scarborough and King’s Bay includes plenty of roadside bars and diners, plus several diverting attractions such as the 54m tall Argyle waterfall and Tobago Cocoa Estate, a working cocoa plantation overlooking a gorgeous valley. Find amazing diving and snorkelling sites around Speyside, as well as views and boats out to Goat Island and Little Tobago where you can find the Caribbean’s largest seabird colonies including frigate birds, boobies, terns and red-billed tropical birds.

EVENTS AND FESTIVALS FEBRUARY – CARNIVAL
Carnival is one of the most famous things about Trinidad and Tobago. Thousands of costumed revellers parade the streets in an annual street party accompanied by calypso and soca music. Visitors can watch the parade of the bands, or join in and ‘play mas’.
EASTER – GOAT AND CRAB RACING AT BUCCOO
Held since 1925, Goat Handlers, known as ‘Jockeys’ train for months and are often outrun by their goats, whilst Crab Catchers try to coax the best possible winning performance from their charges. Tourists may find these races hilarious to watch, however they are taken very seriously by participants!
APRIL – TOBAGO JAZZ EXPERIENCE
This annual event hosts top Jazz performers from around the world and celebrates the indigenous music of Trinidad, Tobago and the Caribbean. It has a promise of being ‘much more than music’, incorporating the cultural and historical practices that define Tobago.
JULY – TOBAGO HERITAGE FESTIVAL
Every year during the last week in July and first week in August, the Tobago heritage festival takes place. It is a two week long show of Tobagonian dance, music, story-telling, culture and food. It is a showpiece into Tobago’s long held traditions and a unique glimpse into the island’s way of life.
OCTOBER – BLUE FOOD FESTIVAL
The Blue Food Festival has a focus on the commonly used ground provision, dasheen. The fair has developed a loyal following of locals, as well as tourists interested in sampling dasheen cuisine; the event also features live entertainment, kids’ fun zone, live demonstrations and more.
DECEMBER – TOBAGO INTERNATIONAL RUGBY 7S TOURNAMENT
An impressive line-up of over 25 teams from around the world compete in the Annual Tobago International Rugby 7s Tournament. The island of Tobago will play host as the country’s top rugby players go up against some of the world’s best.
