Fireworks and Pets Fireworks are a common phobia for dogs and cats as they often find the loud, unpredictable noise and bright displays of light very frightening. Even a seemingly confident dog can tremble and drool at the unfamiliar sounds. As a loving owner it can be very distressing to see our pets so frightened and upset. So what can you do to help?

Ignore your pets' behaviour when they are showings signs of fear. Avoid cuddling and talking to your pet as this can often reinforce the behaviour.

Allow your pet to hide if this makes them more comfortable e.g. under a bed or a table. Don't attempt to pull or try to force them closer to you.

Turn on the radio or television and keep your windows closed and curtains shut. This will help drown out the sound.

The best way to cope with these situations is to desensitise your pet from the sound of fireworks. This can be complex and a good way to start desensitisation is using a CD of firework noises, these can be played at low levels and will help your pet get familiar with the noise.

BLAZER In the middle of the 19th century it was the custom in the Navy for Captains to buy uniforms for their boat’s crew. Uniforms were not commonplace amongst the lower deck but most Captains liked to show off their crews on ceremonial occasions and since the Captains were paying for uniforms out of their own money they were given the freedom to choose their own style and colour. The boat’s crew of HMS Harlequin were dressed as harlequins. The crew from HMS Caledonia wore tartan. Boatmen from HMS Tulip had a green suit with a flower in their cap.

However, the most striking and memorable outfits were the smart blue jackets worn by the crew of HMS Blazer.

The crew became known as “the blazers”, and that is how the garment got its name.
