Welcome to The Portico, a locally based and locally owned start-up company, working for local family and independent businesses throughout the Malvern Hills District.

What better area to start could there be? Recent National press reports have placed us amongst some of the top areas in the UK to both live and work. We have terrific places, amenities and people. Our businesses have great products and services to offer.

For the past few years, press and television comment has painted a gloomy picture of our towns. Much has been made of the impact of out-of-town retail parks, internet sales and proposed new supermarkets on our local business communities. Upton and Tenbury have been blighted by floods. Banks have drastically reduced business support. Recession has dampened spirits.

Here at The Portico we want to bring you the other side of the local story and it certainly is not all doom and gloom. Throughout these pages, and in future issues, we will bring to your door and on-line, successful shops and businesses that are not only surviving, but embracing change and fighting back against the multi-nationals and internet. The Portico will bring you news of businesses that have been trading for many years, often in the same families. They have witnessed recessions, wars, ill-health and changing times, but still continue to innovate and adapt to meet their customer`s needs. In this, our first issue, we proudly feature Cox of Malvern, who celebrate 130 years of continuous trading this May.

Alongside them new businesses are opening up, if not daily then weekly, their owners full of aspiration and ambition to provide new products and new services to meet consumer needs. Great Malvern an air of excitement...

May always introduces an air of excitement to Malvern and the surrounding countryside. Lighter evenings, spring sunshine, budding trees and plants combine to accentuate the beauty of our town and hills.

Malvern is fortunate to still have a great tourist information centre in the middle of town. Do call in for more information or ring on 01684 892289 about these events and so much more that is taking place in May.

The arrival of Spring also brings some of our great shows and festivals, which in turn heralds a welcome influx of visitors, a vital part of our economy.

Malvern Spring Gardening Show this year is from 9th to 12th of May. Firmly in the top five of the Royal Horticultural shows in the UK, literally thousands of garden lovers make the journey to marvel at the exhibits and show gardens. For the 5th year the RHS have invited GMAT to run the Great Malvern floral festival in the town on the same dates. Do take time to walk around and discover the creative efforts spent on making our town so colourful.

If you like exercise and fresh air then this year`s Malvern Walking Festival will appeal to you. Held over a period of 9 days, from Saturday 25th May to Sunday 2nd June, the itinerary of 42 guided walks and much more offer something for everyone of all abilities. Now in its third year, the Great Malvern Food Festival promises to be bigger and better. The festival will be held on Saturday 25th May. The demand for stalls this year means an almost doubling in size for the event. There will be many local artisan food and drink producers present in the main area of Abbey Road and Belle Vue Island, plus activities taking place in the Courtyard. Add cookery demonstrations and street entertainment to the mix and a great fun day is promised.

Nigel and Sara have owned and run the Post Office since 1995 working hard to make it the success it is today. Since those early days they have continuously developed the retail area, stocking an ever-changing range of gifts and greeting cards.

Photo booths provide customers with a much-needed facility for official applications. A more recent addition has been the Thorntons Department, offering a full selection of Thorntons chocolates and also the delicious range of Thorntons ice cream.

No business can stand still, and so Nigel and Sara have decided to refurbish the Post Office counter area. The existing counter is to be replaced by a screenless counter which will allow for a much more personal and efficient service. To enable these major works to be undertaken it will be necessary to close at the end of May-beginning of June. Please note the dates and times in your diary. Nigel and Sara wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this disruption but assure you that they will soon be back, open for longer and offering better facilities and service. The Courtyard on Belle Vue Terrace Whilst the national retail trend has attracted much negative comment, here at The Courtyard in Great Malvern we can report entrepreneurial success. The Courtyard provides a unique opportunity for local startup businesses to experiment, grow and expand their horizons.

Three of the original businesses have recently expanded into larger premises, Nik Nak Noo has moved to Church Walk, whilst Austin & Co

and Zinnia have taken shops on Belle Vue Terrace. The space released has allowed the Lighting and Gift Emporium to open, and some unit space is still available should anyone be interested in testing their ideas in the marketplace. We are delighted to offer them all our congratulations and best wishes for future success.

across The Malvern Portico District Malvern Civic Week 2013 Malvern Civic Week 2013 is officially 13 – 20 July, but as in other years it continues to be a catalyst to show-case Malvern at its best for far longer than one week!

The Malvern Civic Society co-ordinates Civic Week and organises a number of key events during this period.

The Society hopes that these events will provide a focus for business and organisations to add to the programme, to promote themselves and to enhance the rich and vibrant fabric that is Malvern through activities and opportunities for people from across the area and beyond. The plans for Civic Week 2013 are still taking shape, but there is already a range of key-note speakers, gala concerts, balls, walks, literary events, a carnival procession and much more in the pipe line. The society is encouraging local places of interest, often not accessible to the public, to open wide their doors and welcome people to see inside. In the past this has included the historic buildings of Malvern St James, the tower of Great Malvern Priory, the Masonic Lodge on Belle Vue Terrace,

Great Malvern Railway Station and many more. Malvern Civic Week has been hailed as a great example of the Civic Week concept, winning awards from Civic Voice (the national umbrella organisation for Local Civic Societies) for the successful and ambitious projects undertaken.

Roger Sutton, Chairman of Malvern Civic Society, believes Malvern Civic Week has great potential for mutual benefits for local business and event organisers to bring to the town something unique and inspiring, allowing community to thrive in the cultural heritage, outstanding natural beauty and entrepreneurial potential of the town, while also having a huge amount of fun and, maybe, finding out a little more about the wonderful place in which we live or love to visit.

Roger went on to add that in many ways the concept of Civic Week and the Portico Project stem from the same belief that ‘together everyone achieves more’.

Malvern Link has a rich history of such long-standing family concerns and some like Francis of Malvern, and Express TV have been there for over 50 years.

Currently nearly every shop-front is occupied. Occupancy rates, indeed as elsewhere throughout our District, has remained very high during recent difficult times. Much credit for this must go to the tenacity and hard work of the families involved.

In this, the first issue, what better way could there be to underline this ethos than bringing you details of Cox of Malvern, who are celebrating 130 years of continuous service at their Newtown Road premises.

David and Dianne Cox are the retired senior partners. They are the third generation to have been involved and still have an active involvement with the fourth generation, daughter Sam, and son-in-law Peter Lupino.

The business was started in 1883 by David’s grandmother, Florence Louisa Cox. For almost twenty years the premises, mainly a general store, was renowned for selling bedding, haberdashery, flooring and footwear. Typically for those days, the shop was open for long hours, daily and often up to midnight! In the early 1900’s the trading style gradually changed emphasis and more focus was directed to clothing.

Lechmere Cox, the second generation and owner to be come involved, worked in the shop all of his life with the support of Annie Donovan, establishing a solid reputation and rapport with customers throughout the area. Trading was quite different in those early days. Wartime and Depressions were hard times for many. Lechmere often extended credit to local customers, allowing them weekly payment terms, and generally going the extra mile as he continued to build the business.

David joined the business in the 70’s and worked with his father until the latter’s death in 1978. At this time he was joined by his wife, Dianne and this was followed by a period of expansion, taking over and incorporating the shop next door.

Driving onwards with the fourth generation at the helm, Sam and Peter together with their loyal team and with the support of David and Dianne are steering the business forwards.

Visiting the shop today, one can feel the tradition of service that has been built up and handed down over the years. Sam and Peter firmly believe that continued success will be based on a policy of blending new products, interesting and quality choices with traditional values. Stock for both the Womenswear and Menswear departments is sourced from leading British and Continental manufacturers with a wide variety of leading

brands on display. Customer knowledge, quality fabrics, great styling and value-for-money provide strong guidelines to the stocking policy. The premises are surprisingly spacious, and display a great range of formal and casual wear for all occasions.

The lower floor level houses the highly successful men’s hirewear department. This department has evolved and expanded over the years and now offers formal wedding and evening hire with complementing waistcoats and accessories. Customers are able to discuss their requirements and then try garments on before reserving, assuring that they will look their best on the special day.

Great attention is given to personal service, and it is very evident that customer satisfaction is the main aim of everyone involved throughout the shop. That ethos has helped them to survive for 130 years and will sustain them as they face the future. The family and all concerned can be justly proud of their tradition and achievement. This month, Malvern can salute and share their pride.

Upton upon Severn In Upton things are definitely looking up With a population of around 3000 people, in the past the town has been dubbed “Upton Under Severn” due to low lying areas flooding which is an unpleasant and sometimes frightening experience.

Economic difficulties, bad weather… there is no doubt things have been difficult here as they have throughout the country over recent years, but in Upton things are definitely looking up.

The town has a fabulous Riverside setting and many independent shops and businesses offering good old fashioned service and some unique, truly lovely products. With a variety of pubs, restaurants and coffee shops, Upton is a great venue and hosts several major music festivals throughout the Summer.

The 28th Jazz Festival is taking place on 28th – 30th June 2013 and this year all the music venues will be located in the town. Customers will be able to choose a favourite style or use their stroller tickets to wander between the venues.

There will be Free Parking for Ticket Holders on Fish Meadow.

The town’s new flood defences were completed last year and they have already proven successful, which is great news.

With recent improvements to the pavements and main road through the town, business owners are finally able to look forward to the Festival Season which starts this month and hopefully, some better weather for everyone.

Prior to relocating to Worcestershire I worked for almost twenty years at Olympus KeyMed based in Essex. I started in Customer Service and for the last decade, ran the HR department, which was very demanding but often rewarding.

In 2010 I launched a website selling high quality children’s clothing. I invested a great deal of time and a significant amount of money in my site and I was very proud of the end result. Whenever I took my products out to Shows, the feedback was very positive and sales were good.

Unfortunately, the website attracted very little business. I naively expected clients to find it without considering much investment in marketing, found the small adverts I could afford provided little response and struggled to find technical support from anyone in a language I could understand! Reluctantly, I decided to give up the site.

A year ago, I joined the Portico Project, with particular responsibility for Upton. I genuinely believe we can help drive business and footfall back into the town. I would like to thank those clients who have joined us at the very beginning of this exciting journey and look forward to welcoming many more!

The Portico appoints ‘Dave the Cat’ as their competition mascot

It is often said that you don’t own a cat, the cat owns you.

If an independent attitude and lifestyle are anything to go by, then this applies to Dave.

For the first 6 years of his life, Dave lived in Worcester. Whilst there he attended Worcestershire Technical College, and became a firm favourite with the students, if not the authorities, for regularly getting stuck in the lift after visiting the dormitories! At that time his nickname was “Tuna” which reflected his student diet.

Extensive building work made it imperative for Dave to move on. The College librarian, Debbie, lives next door to Alexandra Dunster (the new owner of Malvern Kitchens) at the Wyche, Malvern, and suggested she might like to offer Dave a home.

Alex had recently lost her own cat, and so, two and a half years ago, saw the start of a new relationship.

It was several months before Alex became aware of Dave`s wanderlust. One day he followed her, on foot, down to The Worcestershire Golf Club. Since that day he has not stayed indoors from approximately 7.00am until 10.00pm each day, regardless of weather, making regular quite daunting journeys. Setting out down the hill, Dave crosses the Wells Road, follows pathways and fields and makes his way to the Golf Course where, as in a previous life, he is loved by the golfers but less so by the authorities! For Dave, it is then just a short step to the Three Counties Showground. He loves it there too. His favourite show is the VW Beetle-fest, and he stays for the whole weekend. Alex says that you always know when he is home, as he is extremely vocal.

Like most cats of his age, he has used up some of his nine lives.

Following a row with a fox it needed all of the skills and care of the Masefield Veterinary Team (Barnard’s Green) to save him and get him back to a full life. He likes going there as they always make a fuss of him.

With the ever-increasing cost of living these days, Dave had been looking for a part-time job, and so he has joined us as our Competition Mascot.

Each month, Dave will visit businesses throughout the Malvern Hills District, covering Upton, The Malverns and Tenbury.

The Competition is fun and totally free to enter. Just read the clues and visit the Portico Website to track down where Dave has visited recently. Barnard’s Green is one of the jewels in Malvern’s crown and is often referred to as the Gateway to the Hills.

The broad, traditional High Street is filled with a high number of proprietorrun independent businesses. In this day and age it is something of a rarity to still have a High Street that has a butcher, baker, fishmonger, delicatessen and fresh fruit shop all across the road from each other, and

owned and staffed by people that know each other and their mutual customers by name. Add to that mix an independent toy shop, sweetie shop, ceramic cafe, high quality card & gift shop, and of course, its very own Post Office and you can see why local people are so loyal to “shopping in the green”.

Many visitors express nostalgia and wish that their own High Street had this variety of shops!

The Barnards Green Traders Association has a motto-“traders serving their community”. that was very evident when last year the tradaers held their “crown the green” to celebrate the queen`s jubilee, and also lthe free childrens` puppet theatre shows at Christmas

time. “It is by working together and trying to make our businesses the best that they can be that we will keep barnards green strong and vibrant” said Jane Knowles of just so. “ we endevour to support the community that supports us as traders. This year we are planning a Barnards Green Capers Event on 13th July as a part of the Malvern Carnival as well as sending three floats to take part in the carnival procession. we will also be holding a “plant a bean in Barnards Green” for local school children and a “fun dog show” which will make for fun times for all. FROM THE VETS After what could only be described as an eventful winter, Spring has finally shown signs of arriving. My large animal colleagues are still struggling with the fierce lambing conditions and a Fluke outbreak that the damp conditions have encouraged. On our side of things the improvement in the weather means a change in what our owners do with their pets.

Our average canine patient spends an uneventful winter hiding next to the fire, the incessant rain preventing meaningful exercise. With an improvement in the conditions suddenly their owners feel compelled to explore the excellent dog walking that Malvern has to offer with the result of a marked increase in lame dogs.

Most of the lame dogs have just pulled a muscle or sprained a joint, however, this year we have already had half a dozen dogs with lameness from knee ligament rupture and the late trimming of hedgerows has brought a number of dogs with thorns in their pads. What most people fail to realise is that dogs suffer from fitness problems as much as we do and overdoing it is not uncommon. Our canine friends suffer from over ambition just as much as we do and an improvement in the temperature, severe cabin fever from a prolonged and wet winter, and associated weight gain, mean that we have to take some caution when starting to stretch our paws.

Our advice at this time of year is clear. Take it easy and increase exercise levels slowly. Stiffness after exercise or first thing in the morning is a good sign that a quick visit to the surgery for an examination may go a long way to preventing more serious injury.

On the up side the centre has improved some of its facilities to take into account these increasing workloads.

Our xray suite is going digital meaning faster and more accurate investigations into lameness. Our osteopath, Tony Nevin, and canine masseuse, Helen Clarke, are now seeing increasing numbers of our patients. Our nurse, Jordan, is running free weight loss clinics and hopefully with our surgical and medical expertise we are getting dogs back to normal as fast as possible.

Great Malvern Station The Railway system reached into the Great Malvern area in 1859. The Worcester and Hereford Railway Company engaged architect E.W. Elmslie to design the Great Malvern Station in the Victorian Gothic style and building work started two years later. To this day, the design is considered unique in minor station architecture.

In 1986 the station was seriously damaged by fire. British Rail, as it was then, took the opportunity to update the station’s layout to be more in line with modern consumer demands. Changing

operational needs freed up space for outside commercial interests and it was shortly after this that Lady Foley’s Tea Room opened. More recently, Lucy has just opened her “Shrinking Violet” flower business.

Great Malvern station is considered by visitors, regular travellers and local residents to be an absolute gem. Further endorsement was recently given by Michael Portillo, the well-known Radio and TV pundit, who declared that Great Malvern station was his favourite station in the whole of the UK.

Tenbury Wells Tenbury Wells an ideal place to visit...

Tenbury Wells, The Town in the Orchard, lies on the south bank of the River Teme which forms the border between Shropshire and Worcestershire. It is in the north-west of the Malvern Hills District.

The part-medieval Bridge over the River Teme, which is the main route into Town, links Tenbury to Burford , Shropshire and was rebuilt by Thomas Telford following flood damage in 1795.

Tenbury was also known as 'the town in the orchard' due to the large numbers of fruit orchards of apple trees and also pears, quince and plum trees, in the immediate vicinity of the town. This heritage is revisited every October during the Tenbury Applefest – this year on 12th October.

The whole of the Town Centre is a conservation area with 68 listed buildings.

James Cranston’s Round Market, Corn Exchange and National School still stand.

The Tenbury & District Museum is a short walk from the Town Centre and the "Chinese-gothic" Pump Room buildings, built in 1862 is in the heart of the Town and for those seeking somewhere different to get married The Pump Rooms are licensed for civil ceremonies.

This year on May 4th we see the Tenbury Food Fayre which is held in the Town and celebrates local food and drink producers and the uniqueness of Tenbury’s shops, public houses and restaurants.

R or quick response codes are a type of two-dimensional barcode that can be read using smartphones or tablet devices, which then link directly to content that you choose including text, emails, websites, phone numbers and more! QR codes differ from traditional barcodes as they contain a massive amount of numbers up to 7,089. This is a significantly larger amount then normal barcodes, which can only store up to 30 numbers. It is this that enables a QR code to store the large amount of data needed to link to websites.

QR codes were first invented in Japan by the Toyota Group in 1994.

These weren’t used in the same way as they are today, but were used to track parts in the vehicle manufacturing process. QR codes today are most commonly used to send you to a website which holds more information. They provide advertisers and marketers a huge potential to communicate to their customers an unlimited amount of information, at only a scan away.

QR codes can be found on product packaging, magazines, flyers, tv adverts and even in shop window displays. To scan a QR code you need to download an app onto your smartphone or tablet device. You can usually obtain these for free through the App store, Google Play or your app provider for your phone/device. Once installed you can use the app to scan the code and it will send you to the information.

Carole says “I am delighted to be working with Portico in Tenbury Wells and being able to maintain contact with the Retailers and Businesses that I started work with last year through the Malvern Hills District Council funded project to help business through the closure of Teme Bridge and beyond.”

Having lived in the area for the last 30 years (and formerly from the rural Corvedale)Carole has seen a lot

of changes, but the one consistency is the uniqueness and diversity of Tenbury Wells and its Independent shops. Many are family owned and have been trading for more than one generation, some are relatively new to the Town and have seen the potential of trading in a Town that is not blighted by multiples.
