Rolleston’s Jacob Mitchell, Mitchell has just had his sixteenth birthday, is a pupil at Lincoln High School and at the age of fifteen won another major New Zealand kart racing event. Jacob competed in the Rotax Max 125cc Light class at this year’s Jason Richards GP kart race meeting held in Nelson recently, winning the forty lap race in his class, Senior Rotax lights. The Kart Sport Nelson Club is honoured to run their memorial race meeting to remember former Club member Jason Richards, the V8 Supercar driver, who died of a rare form of cancer in 2011. “Jason was part of this Club and we wanted to pay our respects

His father Mark raced karts from the age of eight years old, before moving on to Mini 7. “Jacob has a passion for any form of motorsport, if it’s on TV he is watching it!” Di laughed. “F1, moto GP, rally - anything going; he also pit crews for a Super Saloon at Woodford Glen Speedway,” she said. “Jacob did a lot of training when he was young and we were at the track all the time. Any new class, or new kart, involved extra hours to master the equipment and get the set-up right. We travel around the South Island mostly, but will do the New Zealand champs wherever they are held. We would love to do more meetings, but it does come down to budget,” Di explained.

Thirty three year old Maurice Wills is fond of his Dad and after attending Shirley Boys High School, he lived with him while gaining a post graduate qualification from Canterbury University. Maurice’s father Donald, Donald an English teacher, writer and travel blogger has been domiciled in Vietnam for some time, while Maurice, along with his family, live in Rolleston. “I’m a computer geography
specialist,” Maurice said, “and my skills have seen me work at Environment Canterbury, and Hurunui District Council, as well as assist in Civil Defence emergencies ie Christchurch Earthquake 2011, Kaikoura Earthquake 2016 and the Port Hills Fire. We recently built a house and moved to Rolleston where my daughter attends West Rolleston School; we love it here and are very happy to have moved to the town. Maurice is hoping folk will read this and find it in their hearts to donate to his Givealittle page so he can bring his Dad Donald, home from Vietnam, where he is currently hospitalised. “My Dad suffered a severe brain injury on September 9th, in his Vietnam home,” Maurice explained. “He is currently in Neurosurgery Critical Care in a Ho Chi Minh City Hospital and so I’ve come to Vietnam to not only be by his side, but also to make plans for his recovery. He is facing a tough road ahead that will take him months to recuperate and I hope we can
get him well enough to return to New Zealand,” Maurice said. “I’ve created the Givealittle page to help my Dad on his road to recovery and any funds raised will be used on medical needs, ongoing care and a flight home with a doctor escort (this is estimated to cost around $20,000). Dad has always been a tough and brave guy who has lived a life full of adventure, unfortunately this will be the toughest journey that he’ll ever have to undertake. “I’m also going to attempt a sponsored run (walk or even crawl - I’ve never run more than twelve kilometres) marathon distance on the beach here in Vung Tau, Vietnam on the weekend of October 6th and 7th and are hopeful of raising further funds from this too. He assists Jacob by engineering and fixing parts when we need it. “Warwick from Leech Motorsport enjoys running vintage karts which Mark and Jacob (Father and Son) also run for fun. Leech Motorsport have sponsored Jacob with the chassis and engine, for which we are extremely grateful,” Di reported. “In the past Jacob has won the South Island Champs four times, came first in the New Zealand Schools’ championship, took second place twice in the same championships, as well as a second in the New Zealand Champs. With the theme ‘Where Town Meets Country’ the 148th Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association (A & P) annual Show will take place on the outskirts of Leeston township, on Saturday, October 13th. The Association is run by a committee of up to thirty elected members with some of the committee having second or third generation involvement. The theme for the Show was selected by the Association and recognises the connection that the Show has in bringing both urban and rural together to celebrate all things country in Ellesmere and nationwide. The Association employs a part-time secretary/treasurer and parttime caretakers. The rest of the work involved in organising and promoting the South Island’s largest one-day A & P Show, along with building, repairs and upkeep of the grounds is carried out on a voluntary basis by committee members and past Presidents throughout the year. The fourth multisport Jackson Holmes Rakaia Salmon Run will take place in October. Each year it attracts more and more entrants becoming not only bigger, but also better. The event is run by Rakaia Lions assisted by volunteers and is a highly successful fundraiser for the service group, with all proceeds going back to the community. The Jackson Holmes Salmon Run is staged around the Rakaia River, riverbed and its surrounding quiet farming countryside in Mid Canterbury and is described as a truly unique experience. The event caters for everyone, competitive, non-competitive. individuals and teams. All the events start and finish at the Rakaia Domain, with staggered times for ease of transition. The multisport nature of the event makes it extremely popular with those training for the Coast to Coast in February. This year sees another event added; a 22km (approximately) mountain bike race in the Rakaia River bed. A new track is being developed which will be
suitable for riders from beginners through to advanced. This makes seven sections in the event with all fitness levels catered for: • Multisport Course - includes a 36km cycle, 1.5km run, 14km kayak and a 11.5km run. • New 22km Mountain Bike Course. • 21km Half Marathon Run. • Long Duathlon - consisting of a 35km cycle and a 14.6km run. • Short Duathlon consisting of a 25km cycle and a 6km run. • Long Run/Walk - 14.2km. • Short Run/Walk - 6km. (The long and short events are designed for people wanting to have a serious go at an event, or tick off a bucket list item.) Look out for the Rakaia Salmon Run car on the road promoting this event, and as a reminder to get entries in. Entry fees are kept to a minimum due to the much appreciated assistance of sponsors.
On Wednesday, September 12th Clearview Junior Choir sang to a packed Horncastle Arena, as part of the 24th 'Kids for Kids' concert. The audience were treated to a variety of some of New Zealand's most well known music, in keeping with the theme, ‘Kiwi As’. The 1300 Canterbury children singing at the event were helping raise awareness for the World Vision charity. Wearing black velvet, emblazoned with Kiwiana motifs, in what they described as, "your nanna's cushions”, the Show was hosted by iconic New Zealand singers, Jackie Clarke and Nathan King (former lead singer of Zed). The children were as much a part of the show as the hosts, singing all of the songs. “Clearview students represented their school beautifully and were really proud of their performance,” it was reported. Special congratulations to Saskia Kalotapu and Sydney Arnott who were Clearview's soloist audition representatives and along with all the children who auditioned, got to sing the final number on stage with the hosts. New Zealanders have a proud history of raising their voices for important issues on the global stage and this year’s Kids for Kids was all about celebrating this ‘Kiwi As’ spirit! Across twelve shows around the nation, 9,350 young New Zealanders took the chance to take to the stage and use their voice for good - adding to the total of more than 280,000 children who have participated over the years.

Hamish Macdonald had only really intended to dip his toes in the water, but the Canterbury motorcycle ace from West Melton has instead made enormous waves right across Europe. He's rapidly shown he's no minnow after all and it's perhaps now more accurate to describe him as a big fish on the world scene. The nineteen year old arrived in Europe at the start of the 2018 F I M E n d u ro G P W o r l d Championship season with the idea that he would simply see where he was at with his enduro riding! A leading competitor at the top of the New Zealand national enduro scene, Hamish had already proven himself as an accomplished rider, but the step up from domestic to GP-level racing is a huge one indeed, or so most people would think. “Spain was a big learning curve," Hamish said. "It wasn’t what I expected, certainly not like a normal enduro back home," he added. At the April double-header rounds one and two of the F I M E n d u ro G P W o r l d Championships in Spain, Hamish
put his 125cc Sherco bike near the front in the Youth Cup 125 Class, finishing runner-up in the GP event's preliminaries, the prologue stage. He then went on to finish the weekend third overall and his international enduro career was up and running. Encouraged by his form, a decision was made that he push on with the world series and he prepared to tackle June’s double -header rounds three and four in Estonia. He managed a podium finish on day two of the event (second) and finished that weekend fourth overall. "Estonia was awesome. I struggled a lot on the first day, with some big mistakes, but I knew my speed was there and it showed on the second day," Hamish commented. At round five in Italy, also in June, Hamish was forced to battle with injury after a crash and he settled for sixth overall, but at least he was able to remain in touch with the championship leaders. Then came double header rounds six and seven at Edolo in Italy on September, 1st and 2nd. Hamish really stood out
here and won both days outright, his 1-1 score-card easily ensuring he would claim the No.1 step on the podium at that event, the first time since Tauranga's Stefan Merriman in 2008 that a New Zealand rider has topped the world enduro scene. The slick and slippery conditions at Edolo played right into Hamish's hands and he commented that it was, "just like home". Hamish competed in France on September, 22nd and 23rd with a fourth placing on the Saturday and a fifth placing on the Sunday. The final race venue is Ruderdorf, in Germany, from October 12th to 14th. So, by the middle of this month, the Kiwi hero could return to New Zealand having had a podium finish at his first attempt no less! Hamish appreciates the support of his many sponsors, who along with the News, wish him every success in the final rounds.

Household names including Nigella Lawson and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern have joined a number of celebrities in donating their favourite recipes to a fundraising cookbook to help a Christchurch-based charity. ‘One Mother to Another’ has just released its inaugural cookbook full of favourite recipes from celebrity chefs, well-known Kiwis and local mums. The cookbook will help fund the charity which supports mums and carers in hospital with their sick children. ‘One Mother to Another’ was started by two mothers Christina Buckland and Joy Reid (who is currently based in
London as TVNZ’s Europe Correspondent) after both mothers experienced unexpected hospital stays with their children. The fear and heartache they endured while in hospital prompted them to start an initiative providing gift bags to mothers of ill children to support them in their hour of need. They currently provide 170 gift bags a month to four South Island hospital wards. The response to the gift bags from both hospital staff and parents alike has been overwhelmingly positive. The initiative however relies heavily on product and monetary donations and as the demand far outstrips supply, the charity
is struggling to keep up with the need. ‘One Mother to Another EATS’ cookbook is intended to raise awareness, support and funds to keep the initiative going. “The book is full of family friendly, child friendly and also special meals for when you need to impress,” said Christina. “One Mother to Another EATS collates favourite recipes from parents, hospital staff, chefs and celebrities and is also full of stories from brave mums who have been open enough to share about their time in hospital with their child.” Recipes have been donated from celebrities including Nigella Lawson, Lawson Annabel Langbein, Langbein Peter Gordon, Gordon Hilary Barry, Barry Toni Street, Street and Jaquie Brown (to name but a few), as well as mothers who’ve received gift bags, hospital staff who’ve given them out, and some of the businesses who have generously supported the charity.

Te Rito Harakeke at Rolleston College embarked on their first solo camp last week. Students from the Waitaha unit at the College ventured to Wainui to stay at YMCA Wainui Heights West. The weather was kind to them which made the activities even more enjoyable. It was reported that all the students challenged and pushed themselves to face their fears and achieve their goals. YMCA instructors led the students through a range of activities, including high ropes, double kayaks, UHF radios, ABL games and a leisurely evening around the campfire. Jonty’s highlights were American Hotdogs for tea and a
scavenger hunt around the local cemetery. When asked about Eric’s best part of camp, he replied ‘it was everything!’. Ana was awarded a certificate for being the best Flying Kiwi on the
high ropes, while Hayley persevered and thoroughly enjoyed the double kayaks. General comments heard after the event - “bring on TRH camp 2019!”.

Things have always been busy at the Rolleston Men’s Shed but they are getting even busier as projects roll in; some for members, some for the community. Members delivered two picnic tables and a storage box to Rolleston College recently and a table is currently being worked on in the woodwork shop - having new veneer fitted. The sea kayak project keeps another member busy, while in the metalwork shop a trailer is being made to carry unrelated kayaks down to the water. A steel side door has been welded up for a storage container at West Rolleston Primary School and at another bench ducting is being assembled to complete the dust extractor for the woodwork shop. The sheet metal is bent on the bender which has also
been manufactured in the metalwork shop. “However always, the important thing, is a cuppa at morning tea time and a natter,” said Rolleston Men’s Shed spokesperson, Sandy Ferguson. Ferguson “This is a large part of what Men's Sheds are all about. While
the majority of our members are retired, there are Saturdays for those still in the workforce and who want to try their hand at something different,” Sandy concluded.

The fix for him was a cat door which is paired with a cat collar which is secured onto your cat. The door recognises the collar and only opens for your pet, leaving intruder animals at the door. Mrs Smith was handing out the students last homework sheet. As she did, she wrote the word ‘plenipoten ary’ on the whiteboard. She then turned around and said, "APen on boys and girls. This is the hardest English word in the world! So, your job is to put this word into a sentence. I'll give you an example for flower… ‘In the middle of the circle was a large teardrop shaped flower garden.’ You see? Nice and easy! Now, whoever makes a correct sentence for the word ‘plenipoten ary’, there will be no homework for a whole month. So, start now!" Nobody could seem to do it, but a boy called Darrell (the least smart kid in the classroom) hiding in the back raised his hand. Everybody stared at him with open mouths, even Mrs Smith. " Oh Darrell, don't tell me you got it? I mean, it is impossible for you to get the right answer for easy ques ons in the first place." Mrs Smith embarrassed him - nearly everyone laughed.
