Year 10, Rolleston College student, Ella Benn, Benn can never be called a quitter.

As a nine year, she was an active and fit runner representing Canterbury in the cross country team when her knees became too painful to run. Having no success with physiotherapy she was sent for an x-ray which revealed she had bone cancer and started chemotherapy immediately.

“I had treatment for nine months, which for a ten year old seemed like years,” Ella commented. “I lost all of my hair and had to have my leg amputated,” she explained. “I chose a surgery called rotationplasty, where the doctors took out my knee, rotated my lower leg 180 degrees and reattached it to my upper leg; my ankle now works as my knee.”

None of this has deterred Ella from being active and she was determined to re-learn old skills.

One such skill was swimming. “I have always loved swimming, I felt like I belonged in the water,”

Ella added. ‘It wasn't until Sophie Pascoe visited in hospital that I felt I truly wanted to be a competitive swimmer.”

Since then she has worked tirelessly to achieve her goal and many would say surpassed it.

Ella has gone on to win ribbons and medals, as well as gaining an award for ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at her swim club. She was also named ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at Rolleston College, and received the ‘Emerging Talent’ award from ParaFed Canterbury.

Ella set herself another goal. “I wanted to become a Paralympic swimmer,” she enthused. Ella has now become a member of the Paralympic Potential Programme (development squad) with Paralympics New Zealand. She undertakes training several times a week and also attends sessions in Auckland.

Unfortunately, she has had two relapses, the first was a small tumour on the edge of her right lung. The second relapse was

Sandra Benn, Benn Ella’s mother said, “it didn’t slow her down, even when in a great deal of pain she was back in the pool whenever she could. Doctors were amazed at her strengthespecially when she got back in the water thirteen days after her lobectomy!

Ella told the News, her biggest challenge has been her mindset. “Having a positive attitude all the time and never giving up is the key,” she concluded.

L to R: Arnold Tibbetts, Paul Hurrell, Ron Petersen It’s been a busy few months of ’shed building’ for the Rolleston Men’s Shed group as they not only worked on the assembly of small garden sheds, but also got to grips with a major construction job.

The group have been busy with

the build of their ‘Woodwork Shed’ thanks to a generous grant from Pub Charities. This grant has allowed Rolleston Men’s Shed to undertake the construction of this extension, something that has become very necessary for the group to prosper.

“Benches and machine tools take up room, even before members start working, so room to move around and actually complete projects is important to the Shed's success,” said Men’s Shed spokesperson, Sandy Ferguson.

Ferguson “We have also built a small extension, in the form of roofing, between the Woodwork and Metalwork Shops so that stock can be stored under cover,” Sandy added.

Rolleston Men’s Shed members continue to work on the pipe statues for Rolleston, a modification of the Fire Brigade's van and a large number of smaller projects.

“New members are joining and the welcome mat is out for them,” Sandy commented.

“We are still collecting old batteries for fundraising and these can be dropped off at the Men’s Shed premises in Dynes Road, or contact us if a pickup of same is required mensshedrolleston@gmail.com,” he concluded.

Local company, Selwyn Computers has been part of the Selwyn community since 2011 on a small scale, and is now set to become more active and bigger than before.

Owners Stephan Williamson and wife Shannon have recently changed the branding of the business, giving it a fresh new look and feel, plus a whole new vision.

Stephan arrived in Selwyn in mid 2011 and immediately saw a need to provide a quality, affordable local service. That is exactly what he did, he set about being approachable, while creating a value added service that was friendly and cost effective.

As a start up he ran the business by himself while working part time in the area.

His children all attend local schools, and enjoy some of the many extra curricular activities available in the Selwyn district.

In mid 2016, the addition of Shannon to the Selwyn Computers’ team saw Stephan more able to focus on the nuts and bolts of sorting people’s computing woes, while Shannon

excelled in the office taking care of administration. Her background was also in the technology sector, so she was a welcome addition to the team.

Shannon’s main focus is on companies other brand ‘WebGas Websites’ which enables both companies to provide assistance in range of computer related areas.

Selwyn Computers is in the fantastic position of having over thirty years’ combined experience in the industry and living in this sublime part of the world.

Rolleston Netball Club (RNC) has all but completed its team selection and currently have 29 'Saturday' teams from year five upwards. The Club is still taking registrations for their Year 1-4 programme.

“The Selwyn Netball Centre (SNC) pre season tournament is coming up on April 7th,” reported RNC secretary Mary Wiering, Wiering “and we are planning toward it.

“The first round of competition for the season begins with grading day on Saturday, April 14th, with the round officially starting on Saturday, April 28th,

and all at Selwyn Netball Centre in Lincoln. We also have a number of girls who have been selected to trial for the SNC Under 15, Under 17 and Under 19 representative teams over the next couple of weekends, we congratulate all of you and wish you much luck in these trials.”

RNC is looking forward to the season of netball ahead and looking forward to seeing some great challenges and personal development in our players.

The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool and Prep School rooms enjoyed a fun excursion to the Rolleston Library recently. Their teachers recognised the excursion as a valuable opportunity to reinforce the importance of, and enjoyment in, reading to the children.

In addition to enjoying an exciting bus trip to the Library and a tour of the facility, the children were also fortunate to have Kiwi author Maria Gill visit the Centre and read to them, as part of the Storylines Children’s Literature Charitable Trust book tour.

Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool director Tracy Summerfield said high-quality books enrich children’s imagination and help them develop vital language and literacy skills from an early age.

“A child’s brain is constantly forming connections which are strengthened by activities like reading,” Tracy stressed.

“Reading to children and then teaching them to read, promotes healthy brain development that lasts a lifetime,” she added.

“Reading stories is also a catalyst for a child’s imagination and curiosity and enables them to learn the difference between real and make-believe.” Tracy commented.

The benefits of reading to children from a young age are well known a nd rang e from improved cognitive skills, to higher levels of performance at school. But with so many books available, it can be hard for parents to know which are best for their children.

After a two month break it wasn’t surprising that the February meeting of the Rolleston Combined Probus Club involved much noisy chatter as members caught up with each other following the extended Christmas break.

“We love Nick Bland’s books The Very Noisy Bear and The Wrong Book. His stories have lots of different voices, repetition and musical instruments and are perfect for engaging children and getting them to join in. We also love books with underlying messages that allow us to build other learning opportunities into the storytelling. Wombat Stew by Marcia Vaughan is a great example of this. We can explore the different quantities the animals use in their stew, the science of cooking, and the emotions the animals feel as they trick the dingo.

“For parents, one of the greatest things you can do for your children is to instil in them a love of reading and books,” Tracy enthused.

“Both the Cat’s Pyjamas’ teachers and children wish to say a special thank you to the awesome staff at Rolleston Library and for the fantastic parent help which made their excursion possible,” Tracy concluded.

The ship is at present in the Cameroons and Christine is planning to join it again soon, in whatever location it may be at that time.

COME & SEE THE CAR DISPLAY Autumn has arrived but hopefully there will be a continuation of the settled weather that we have enjoyed over the summer. Competitions and tournaments so far have been completed without interference by the weather, except for our own Farmers’ Tournament which had to be cancelled due to water on the green.

There have been some good results for West Melton bowlers in the Centre Competitions. West Melton 1 came third equal in the 8’s competition and in the Under 8’s (junior) Paul Williams and Ken Sharplin made the play -offs, but unfortunately lost their first play-off game. But a good effort overall from these bowlers.

Congratulations to Paul Williams and Bill Paekau who won the Men’s Club Championship Pairs.

This was a very closely contested game throughout, but their opponents, Ron McNicholl and Bob Shorter just couldn’t

quite get their nose in front, losing by just two points.

Congratulations also to this year’s winners of the Mike Pero, Ken Sharplin sponsored Club Super Pairs competition who were Mike Leigh, Leigh Ken May and David Gooch.

Gooch On March 17th, Kirwee Bowling Club challenged West Melton for the LeCompte Cup. This is an annual local derby, but unfortunately for Kirwee, West Melton were up for the challenge and retained the cup with an emphatic nine games to one, win. With the 17th also

being St Patrick’s day, bowlers were encouraged to dress appropriately for the occasion and at the end of the day prizes were presented to Tony Gallon and Ana Gooch for being the ‘best dressed’ Man and Woman.

Social bowls is progressing nicely with full greens and at time of writing we have one game to play. There have been some really good scores with most teams recording personal bests.

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd On March, 20th Rolleston College students were buzzing with the fact that four of the Schools’ staff members were about to take part in ‘Shave for a Cure’.

Matt Nicoll, Nathan Scott, Huirua Emery, Emery and Mel Evans, Evans joined hundreds of freshly-shaven heads that will be out in force throughout March as Kiwis banish their bad hair days for good to Shave for a Cure!

The annual week which has seen thousands of Kiwis go bald over the last sixteen years officially took place from March, 19th to 25th. Brave ‘shavees’ have been busy raising money to support the estimated 21,000 New Zealanders living with a blood cancer, or related blood condition.

Last year close to 2,000 individuals, businesses, schools, and community groups shaved raising over $1.25 million for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).

Rolleston College’s fundraising drive was organised by Matt with the aim of raising $2,000.

At the time of going to print, the learners and staff had raised just over $1,000.

The 2018 fundraising target for

Shave for a Cure is $1.2 million.

LBC receives no Government funding and Shave for a Cure funds their work supporting New Zealand families living with a blood cancer or related condition.

LBC’s services include personalised patient support, funding for research - including the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Research Unit at the University of Auckland, providing information, running awareness programmes and advocating on behalf of patients.

“It is super exciting to see how many people have signed up to Shave in 2018. To see people getting involved simply to help people living with blood cancer is always so lovely to see and we’re very appreciative,” said Pru Etcheverry, Etcheverry Leukaemia, and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s CEO. If anyone from the community wishes to support Rolleston College they are still accepting donations on their fundraising page.

Development of the new Rolleston town centre has taken a step forward with the Council approving a plan outlining the broad location of key elements.

The town centre is to be developed on what is currently part of Rolleston Reserve, and includes four key components the new Rolleston Library and Community Centre, a town square, a commercial and retail area including hospitality outlets, and transportation and service linkages.

The recommended plan sees

the library and community centre located at the key corner of the reserve and Tennyson Street, with direct pedestrian access to car parking in Moore Street.

Retail activity has a frontage along Tennyson Street, while food and beverage has a frontage to the Wordsworth Street extension, and along a proposed promenade through the reserve.

The town square, which provides a formal outdoor gathering space, is located

between the library and community centre and the commercial areas.

Space is also provided within the location plan for a cinema complex, adjacent to the community centre. Detailed design work is now under way for the key elements.

The first major project will be the new library and community centre - a 2,200m2 facility which is planned to be opened in late 2019.

Selwyn District Council has just adopted its Long-Term Plan Consultation Document, Fast Forward ’28, for public consultation. Consultation will open on Wednesday, April 4th and run until Friday, May 4th online at www.selwyn.govt.nz and from local libraries.

Fast Forward ’28 sets out the key projects and activities the Council is planning over the next ten years and how these will be funded. Average annual rate rises of 4% are forecast over the next ten years.

“Selwyn is now the third-largest district in the South Island, after

Christchurch and Dunedin,” said Mayor Sam Broughton, “and we “ are planning to ensure our infrastructure and facilities meet our communities’ needs,” he said.

The plan outlines proposed new projects, as well as key developments already scheduled - like the completion of the Rolleston Town Centre as a focal point for the town and district.

Nine significant new proposals are open for consultation.

These include proposals for an indoor courts complex at Foster Park, an extension to Selwyn

Aquatic Centre, and a new district-wide rating system for community centres, halls and reserves.

Mayor Broughton says the proposals in the plan represent a balance between completing t h e p ro j ec t s th a t o u r communities need and continue to ask for, and keeping rates affordable.

Selwyn motorists are being reminded of the need to take care at intersections through a new Selwyn District Council road safety campaign.

The ‘What’s the cost’ campaign aims to raise awareness by profiling the price of failing to stop or give way at intersections.

Of the crashes that occur in Selwyn, 40% take place at intersections. From 2013 to 2017, 571 crashes occurred at intersections within the district, and of these 216 crashes involved an injury, with eight fatalities recorded.

In Selwyn 61% of intersection crashes are caused by failing to stop or give way. Poor driver observation is a factor in 49% of all intersection crashes.

Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of

the New Zealand Police reminds motorists that stopping means a vehicle’s wheels do not move at all.

“We encourage people to come to a complete stop, to not start looking until after they have stopped and to have a good hard look to ensure that if there is a motorcycle, or a dark coloured vehicle, they see it. We encourage people to travel with their lights on to make sure they are visible to others,” he said.

Along with the risk of causing a crash, motorists failing to stop, or give way, face an instant $150 fine and twenty demerit points.

Selwyn Police will be supporting the ‘What’s the cost’ campaign by monitoring intersections and will be issuing tickets and demerits to motorists who fail to

stop, or give way, at intersections.

Top tips for intersection awareness: Always come to a complete stop at stop signs.

• Look in all directions, ahead, behind, side to side, and then only proceed when it can be done so safely.

• At give way signs, slow down and look in all directions, ahead, behind and both sides and then only proceed when it can be done so safely.

• Be aware of how fast traffic is going, particularly when entering a 100km/h road.

• Don’t overtake when travelling through an intersection.

• Be aware of the give way rules for controlled and uncontrolled intersections.

• Indicate intentions early when turning.

The kea crossing installation has now been completed for West Melton Primary School, on Weedons Ross Road.

Senior students from the school trained as Road Patrollers with School Community Officer Constable Rick Groen recently, learning how to safely operate the newly installed, and much awaited, crossing to ensure their fellow students and caregivers get across the busy road safely.

Kea crossings are operated by the trained patrollers along with an adult supervisor. The

patrollers are taught how to find a safe gap in the traffic flow to swing the stop arms out, to hold the pedestrians until traffic has stopped and to release pedestrians to cross, once the path is clear.

Sue Jackson, Jackson Principal of West Melton Primary School said the kea crossing is an opportunity for students to be involved in the community with leadership responsibilities.

The kea crossing and footpath extension north on Weedons Ross Road complete the recent shopping centre landscaping and school frontage development. SDC Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler urges parents to use the kea crossing and try active transport.

“We want our young people to be getting to school actively where they can and the kea crossing and footpath north is another tool to open up routes to the community across a busy road. Caregivers need to be mindful that they are role models for all children, not just their own, and use the kea crossing to and from school when the flags are up.’’

Drivers are asked to keep an eye on their speed around pedestrians, when entering and exiting the shopping centre and near the school.

“This is your village and for your children to be safe getting to school you must slow down,” Stephanie said.

When the kea crossing is not under the control of the road patrol team the cross point operates like any other piece of road where pedestrians have to wait until the road is clear before crossing and to wave drivers through who stop to let them cross.

On Tuesday, March 13th the Year 10 French Class from Rolleston College went along to Westfield Riccarton for the purpose of viewing a French movie.

COOLER DAYS - THINGS ARE HAPPENING The cooler nights and cold mornings have now got rodents on the move. Even at my own home in the middle of the day I watched a mouse trying to get under my garage door. A pre-winter check is extremely advisable. When your garage door is closed make sure there are no gaps under the door or at the corners, especially check where the external reveals meet the concrete, at many homes these stop short and mice can walk straight through and get either inside the garage or into your walls. The gap size you are looking for is anything you can fit the end of a Biro (the end with the clip on it) into. You might think that is impossible, but mice have an incredible ability to go through small holes. The other places to check are the weep holes in any brick work, and gaps around waste outlets at gully traps. You may think mice are cute wee guys, but unfortunately they are filthy and can cause terrible damage inside people's homes eg ea ng the insula on around wiring causing a risk of fire and electrical injury.

One of the easiest ways of keeping the numbers down are rat bait sta ons on the outside of your home which are lockable and safe. We say rat sta ons as rats can't get into a mouse sta on, but both can use a rat sta on.

About three sta ons placed around the outside walls of most homes are enough to keep the numbers down, check them about every three weeks; if there is no ac vity move them to a new loca on. It is far beKer to control them outside, rather than let them get in and risk that horrible smell and damage. The smell is them urina ng - they dribble urine about three thousand mes a day. So basically everywhere they walk is a trail of urine, this can be disease causing and is obviously not clean inside our homes. On Saturday, April 28th Hororata plans a special festival which will entertain and delight, while benefitting the community.

The Hororata Night Glow will be a spectacular festival with hot air balloons lighting up the night sky, music, the best food and wine the Selwyn district has on offer, craft stalls and heaps of family entertainment.

“The Hororata Night Glow has already captured people’s imagination with over 12,000 following the festival on Facebook. Hot air balloons have a certain magic that intrigues young and old and to see them ‘glowing’ in unison to music is a rare and exciting opportunity,” explained Hororata Community Trust Executive Officer, Cindy Driscoll.

Driscoll “While the balloons are the headline act of the Hororata Night Glow, the autumn festival surrounding their performance will offer a whole range of entertainment, making this a great afternoon/evening out.”

Organisers report that the event has some amazing artists lined up to entertain the crowd including Holly Kimber, Kimber Volts and The Easy Hearts. “Inflatable Mini golf and Springfree trampolines will both be free for children to play on,” Cindy added, “while archery, along with many more fun activities are planned.

“Food is going to be a big focus of the Hororata Night Glow and we will have a huge range of street food on offer. We are also working with the Selwyn District Council to have the ‘Sensational Selwyn Food and Wine Trail’ at the event, where people can sample the best our district has to offer,” Cindy said.

“The Hororata Night Glow is a

community event which will bring many benefits, primarily raising the profile of this dynamic rural community,” Cindy said. “There are a number of large-scale projects in the pipeline for the district, including the proposed new Hororata Community Centre, which could benefit from the event, once it is established.

“The Hororata Community Trust has a proven track record of running great festivals, for example, the Hororata Highland Games,” Cindy commented. “We have a strong, passionate and willing community who give their time to make these events amazing and the Hororata Night Glow will be no different. The advantage our community has with the staging of this event is that local balloon operator; Ballooning Canterbury has the

passion, contacts and knowledge to get the balloons to Hororata. It’s envisaged there will be more than ten balloons attending - including some with special shapes.

“There is no other Night Glow event in the South Island and the Hororata Domain is a fabulous venue,” Cindy enthused. “It offers free onsite parking, and organisers have an afternoon of food, music and entertainment planned, concluding with the hot air balloons lighting the sky (and more music). We definitely have the recipe for a successful festival,” Cindy concluded.

The Selwyn Parenting Network’s fifth birthday, held on Children’s Day Sunday, March 4th, had all the hallmarks of success from the outset; a committed team of volunteers and organisers, alignments to great community partners, a vast range of local sponsors, and not to be taken lightly - the most stunning weather!

The Selwyn community did not disappoint as they came out in their thousands to enjoy this annual Selwyn Parenting Network flagship Children’s Day event, this year hosted for the first time from Foster Park, Rolleston with proud principal partners Faringdon.

There were smiles all around as children of all ages enjoyed the wide variety of free activities and entertainment on offer; from bouncy castles, mini rideons and pony rides, through to sensory activities, peddling bikes to making healthy smoothies, and even hula hooping which saw Selwyn’s own MP Amy Adams showcasing her hooping skills!

It was reported that over 1,500 free sausage sizzles were lovingly cooked off and served by wonderful volunteers of all ages (the youngest being just six) who kept up with the growing queues in admirable fashion. Many families brought their picnic rugs to sit on and enjoy quality family time at the Park, watching the free entertainment that included a magic show and an amazing dance routine by the wonderful StarJam group. There really was something for everyone at an event that oozed family connectedness, and embraced the overall purpose to celebrate tamariki on Children’s Day. The event also served as an opportunity for Selwyn Parenting Network to officially celebrate its fifth Birthday’ five years as an incorporated society with charitable status, and in true birthday style this was suitably marked with the cutting of a fabulous celebratory cake by Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton.

Now Porters has utilised its considerable resources to provide a summertime playground for those aficionados of mountain biking. While for those who don’t want a bar of either the winter or summer offerings, there’s the newly acquired, exSki Club Lodge open to the public for food and refreshments.

The new bike flow trail is located around Porters Lodge, six kilometres off state highway 73 along the Porters Ski Area access road. It is close to popular destinations such as Castle Hill, Cave Stream and Lake Lyndon. The 2.3 kilometre long, purpose built, mountain bike, flow trail is set amongst native Hebes, Tussocks and Dracophyllums and has been designed to be fun for all abilities and ages.

“It’s like a gravity fed, pump track, full of hips, rolls, berms and tables,” reported Jason Collins, Collins the Porters Summer activities co-ordinator. “We aim to have you giggling all the way

down and leaving with a grin from ear to ear,” he added.

“The fully licenced Lodge really complements the bike trail,” Jason said. “Relax in the courtyard watching others ride on past, while taking in the natural uninterrupted view of the Southern Alps. Once you’re refuelled - go for another lap yourself!”

For those not partaking of the bike track, a short walking track is offered - walkers can get on to the ridge looking out into Crystal Valley and survey the majesty of the surrounding

Supermarkets and shelves around the region have literally been groaning under the sheer weight of chocolate bunnies, creme eggs, sticky hot cross buns and sweet mini eggs. Yes, this is the Easter season.

As a minister, I always seem to get asked what chocolate eggs and hot cross buns have to do with Easter. Well, eggs and Easter go together like ‘kiwis’ and Jandals, but how come?

The answer is that eggs are seen as a symbol of fertility and life. That’s why early Christians adopted them as a symbol of new life and resurrection helping them to remember Jesus.

Hot cross buns are also a huge Easter tradition at this time of year. The cross on the top represents the cross of Christ and the spices inside remind Christians of the spices put on his body. Traditionally Christians eat buns on Good Friday.

So what is this ‘Easter thing’ anyway? Easter’s a Christian festival that celebrates the rising or resurrection of Jesus.

According to sacred biblical writings, Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday. Yes, it’s weird to remember on that day that someone died as 'good', but back then it really meant holy or sacred.

We know that new beginnings often rise out of painful endings and just around the corner from the shadows of Good Friday is

the dawning hope of Easter.

Jesus then came back to life three days later. His resurrection is celebrated on Easter Sunday. This is why a cross is used as a symbol of the Christian faith. Easter is all about faith and hope realised, and the new life this brings.

Jesus is alive!

Easter was an opportunity to celebrate the hope of new life at a church near you.

Late one night a man is driving down the road, speeding quite a bit.

A cop no ces how fast he is going and pulls him over. The cop says to the man, "Are you aware of how fast you were going?" The man replies, "Yes I am. I'm trying to escape a robbery I got involved in."

The cop gives him a scep cal look and says, "Were you the one being robbed?"

The man casually replies, "No, I commiKed the robbery." The cop looks shocked that the man admiKed this. "So you're telling me you were speeding...AND commiKed a robbery?" "Yes," the man calmly says. "I have the loot in the back."

The cop begins to get angry. "Sir, I'm afraid you have to come with me."

The cop reaches in the window to subdue the man. "Don't do that!" the man yells fearfully. "I'm scared you will find the gun in my glove compartment!"

The cop pulls his hand out. "Wait here," he says. The cop calls for backup.

Soon cops, cars, and helicopters are flooding the area. The man is cuffed quickly and taken towards a car. However, before he gets in, a cop walks up to him and says, while gesturing to the cop that pulled him over, "Sir, this officer informed us that you had commiKed a robbery, had stolen loot in the trunk of your car, and had a loaded gun in your glove compartment.

However, we found none of these things in your car."

The man replies, "Yeah, and I bet that liar said I was speeding too!"
