Two Christchurch mothers who turned their frightening hospital experiences with their sick children into a charitable initiative are being recognised by the Christchurch City Council. One Mother to Another is a charity which provides gift bags to mothers and carers who unexpectedly find themselves caring for their children in hospital. The charity was started in June 2016 by Rolleston’s Christina Buckland and her city friend Joy Reid following harrowing personal experiences, and in late December the pair received a Christchurch Civic Award for Emerging Leaders 2017. The award wasa for their service to the city and the people of Christchurch. Christina attended the ceremony to receive the accolade on both of their behalves. Each year the Christchurch City Council honours outstanding citizens and organisations, recognising their substantial service and voluntary contribution to the city and said the pair’s “services to this city

are greatly valued and acknowledged with this award”. One Mother to Another was born out of every mother’s worst nightmare – nursing a child in hospital. In May 2016, Christina was rushed to the Children’s Acute Assessment Unit (CAAU) with her then eighteen month old daughter Arabelle. Arabelle It was an extremely stressful, emotional and difficult day. After Arabelle made a full recovery Christina self-funded ten gift bags to encourage other mothers experiencing the fear and vulnerability that she had felt. Christina’s friend Joy, who had spent her first week of motherhood in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with her son Jonathan, Jonathan then joined her and together they have grown the initiative to provide 130 gift bags every month to two wards at Christchurch Hospital namely the Children’s Acute Assessment Unit, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They have also just started providing 25 gift bags a month for the mums and carers in the Neonatal Intensive Care units in

both Nelson and Southland. Christina explained, “our aim is to put a smile on the face of the mother and carer and let them know we care about what they are going through, acknowledge that this could be a very difficult time for them and hopefully brighten their day.” The gift bags are filled with items donated by many generous businesses or bought with funds raised or donated to the organisation. “To be acknowledged by the Christchurch City Council with the Emerging Leaders Award 2017

is extremely humbling. We are just two mothers doing our bit to help other mothers, and to have our efforts recognised is a wonderful encouragement,” enthused Christina. “It is such a privilege to be able to help other Mothers in their time of need,” Joy added. “We are truly blown away by all the support and donations which make One Mother to Another possible. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the staff in the CAAU and NICU wards who do an incredible job,” she concluded.
