When the TAANZ National Travel Industry Awards took place in the Auckland Sky City Convention Centre recently, Helloworld Rolleston had good reason to celebrate their success. The business’s Kirwee owners, Paul and Sue Robinson accepted the award for Best Retail brand - Multi Location on behalf of their Blenheim, Wanganui and Rolleston stores. The award recognises the retail agency operating across two or more locations, which demonstrates best practice in agency management and service delivery. Sue presented to a panel of three judges in August highlighting the strategic plan, the staff development, training initiatives and the future business plan for their stores.

“It was a daunting process and after 45 minutes you leave simply with a ‘thank you’, no feedback, nothing, and then wait nearly two months,” Sue explained. “I left feeling quite flat, but I believed I had given it

my best shot.”

“Having three stores geographically split does hold its challenges, but fits with our company philosophy where we work in partnership to serve our local communities with their travel needs.

The fifth annual Prebbleton Crafts and More Market will be held on Saturday, November 25th at the Prebbleton Hall, Springs Road, Prebbleton.

With nearly forty stalls the market is going to be a ‘must do’ for everyone looking to buy gifts for Christmas, or any occasion, even gifts for themselves.

There will be a wide variety of craft items for sale including embroidery, quilting, dolls’ clothing, wooden toys, soaps and candles, chocolate bouquets, Christmas crackers, Christmas baked goodies, plants, jewellery, art works, children’s clothing and much, much more.

As well as the craft stalls there

will also be a coffee cart, food stalls and a gelato van on site.

The gelato is described as a frozen treat; Dolce Vita in a cone! With less fat and sugar than ice cream but with lots more flavour, a gelato is the guilt free exotic treat.

Prebbleton Heritage will once

It’s Fireworks’ Night time again and the sky will be lit up on Saturday evening, November 4th at Foster Park, Rolleston.

This annual event is run by a group of Rolleston Residents’ Association (RRA) volunteers, joined by representatives from many local schools, sporting codes and non-profit groups from the wider Rolleston area.

Apart from celebrating the night safely, and to give the community a family fun night, it is also run to help support all these groups. Local bands and performances on stage will entertain and organisers have also arranged a wide variety of other activities.

This wonderful community night has now become a principal event in the Selwyn calendar given how long the event has

been going and the large crowd it always attracts.

“It certainly is a fun night out with all the local community groups selling food, raffles, and games to name but a few,” organisers commented.

The Fireworks’ evening originally started where the Selwyn District Council building now stands. Tree prunings would be pushed into a big bonfire and the local fire brigade would release everyones’ fireworks. It was a real community bonfire with a picnic tea and games.

As the town and community has grown the event has also grown which has meant th at technicians are commissioned to put together a wonderful professional display.

volunteers who help each year, not just the organising committee, but all the volunteers who assist their various clubs or organisations on the night.

Volunteers are still being called for to help set up on the morning of the event and help again on the morning after to dismantle and put away the signage, rubbish bins and other bits and pieces.

All money gathered from the entry fee goes directly to paying for the event with the evening costing in excess of $70,000 to produce. Event organiser Jens Christensen said, “this is not a Council run event, but one totally paid for from funds collected at the gate and donations/grants we are fortunate to receive. So do come along and support your local non-profit community groups.”

The organisers ask that those attending leave glass, pets, alcohol and fireworks at home as these are prohibited.

Enjoy some of the yummy food provided by local groups, or the new rides, while enjoying great entertainment and family fun before the Fireworks’ display gets underway later in the evening.

Rolleston Probus have no outings planned for November but are definitely looking forward to their Christmas function to be held at Lincoln University in early December. They may even have a meal which includes some of the twenty thousand cucumbers picked daily and distributed throughout New Zealand, from the farm at Clarkville that the

group visited in September!

Many will remember Chris Martin from his time with Selwyn District Council as a Youth Advisor and he has now gone on to be recognised by his peers and receive a Kiwi Bank Local Hero Award.

Currently a board member of the Canterbury Youth Workers’ Collective and AraTaiohi Chris continues to mentor ex-Selwyn youth council members, as well as being on the boards of the Selwyn Parenting Network and Selwyn Waiwera Youth Trust.

Since ceasing Council employment Chris has worked with a number of other local authorities helping them with youth engagement and the establishment of youth councils.

He was involved with establishing General House, a community house in Rolleston that aims to provide a physical space for teaching, encouraging and empowerment.

“It has been greatly humbling to be nominated by a peer and for that nomination to be supported by others in the Selwyn and youth work communities,” Chris commented. “When I was told about the nomination I never

thought I would really win a medal,” he said.

Local Hero medals go to outstanding Kiwis who will be presented with them at one of sixteen events across New Zealand. They aim to identify and reward everyday people doing extraordinary things in their local communities.

Local Hero Awards recognise the enormous contribution, sacrifice and commitment of Kiwis who selflessly work to make their local communities better places.

The award ceremony will take place at Addington Raceway on Thursday, December 7th.

Art Couture NZ hosted their inaugural fashion show at The Vineyard, Rossendale in Tai Tapu on October 12th. Art Couture was created by four women from South West Christchurch and Selwyn (Lee Lee Parker, Parker Ros March, Judy Sachdeva and Kim Strange) Strange who had the desire to provide a local wearable arts competition. The evening was an outstanding success, with many of the garments leaving the audience and judges alike, totally

amazed. Selwyn judges Kelly Morrison, Loretta Sloan, Blanche Fryer and Steve Henderson had the unenviable task of selecting winners in each of the five sections. No mean feat looking at the talented and creative entries submitted. The overall extremely high standard made the selection of a supreme winner incredibly difficult.

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING Here I sit watching our spring weather in all its unpredictable glory, blossoms being smashed by rain and hail, and listening to the fiasco created by Winston who’s made the most of his time in the limelight.

What has become clear (or a little less muddy) is that he is advocating more affordable housing for first home buyers: NZ First Pre Election Policy: Provide first home buyers with affordable residential sections under long term low interest sale and purchase agreements of up to 25 years.

Purchasers would build their own homes using normal bank financing, with title to the section transferred to them and the amount owing for the section, secured by a second ranking statutory land charge.

We now know on what side this policy will be directed from. But as surely as spring is unpredictable, so it would seem is Winston Peters!

However if you are thinking about getting on to the property ladder, whoever is dictating the terms will still require your finances to be in order - pay down personal debt now and show the bank a good savings plan.

On October 9th through to the 12th, New Zealand Synchronised Swimming held their biggest ever national championships, in Invercargill.

The event was attended by 150 swimmers from nine New Zealand clubs and they were joined by two international clubs; New Caledonia and China.

Eleven girls from the Weedons based, Small Strokes Synchro club participated in a range of figures and routines with many

returning home with some outstanding results.

The girls swam their best and were placed well in the New Zealand rankings.

Nellie Manning gained a third placing in the dolphin figure section. While the 13/14/15 year old team, made up of Samantha Asher, Tia Betteridge. Alessandra Ward and Lauren Small achieved a third place in the team routine following their excellent performance.

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd Rolleston Tennis Club’s season has had a wet and windy start with its first weekend of competition cancelled. Needless to say Club members are hoping that that’s all the bad weather out of the way. After a very successful registration in September the Club have entered three senior Saturday teams and twelve midweek ones. In the Junior section Rolleston Tennis Club have

three high school, three primary and one mini tennis team all entered in the competition. The tennis coaching programme has just started with the Club’s new coach Alan Adair.

Adair “It was great to see all the children back on the courts and having such fun,” reported Club President Zoe Gilmore.

Gilmore “There have been a lot of changes on our committee with Dave Greenwood stepping down

as President and Janine Greenwood as secretary. The Club would like to give a big thankyou to Dave and Janine for all the work that they’ve done over the years - they’ll definitely be missed. Our new committee definitely have big shoes to fill but will take on the task and have already made a great start. We’re all looking forward to a fun filled tennis season,” Zoe concluded.

A bunch of like-minded, local car enthusiasts have come together to organise Selwyn’s first ever outdoor, car, truck, motorcycle and farm machinery show later this month.

The brainchild of Rolleston local John Winchester, a strong and passionate committee has been formed to put together a fantastic day for car aficionados and families alike.

John commented that the support from those keen to assist had been overwhelming and contact on the whole had only been by word of mouth.

“I have been bowled over by all these great locals, including the support from Rolleston and Districts Lions, that are chipping in together to get the inaugural event off the ground,” John commented. A committee has been formed to drive it all and planning is well underway.”

Steve Wright, a member of the committee added, “we now have a great format for the day outlined and it is time to start sou rcin g sp on sor s a nd beginning to get the word out.”

Between local support and car club interest the ‘Selwyn Motor

Fest and Family Fun Day’ is looking to be a fantastic annual community event.

“We really need some key sponsors to come on board which will ensure the success of this massive event. We already have over six hundred cars on the contact list, heaps of events for children (young and old) planned for the day and the best thing is that any profits raised will go to help out our friends at St John.”

Selwyn District Council has provided an event grant to support the day and help to get it off the ground.

The Selwyn Motor Fest and Family Fun Day will take place on Sunday, November 26th opposite the new roundabout by Rolleston College. It is a large site that will have ample parking for the hundreds of show cars expected, as well as for those attending as spectators. Bouncy castles, food trucks, emergency service displays and defence representation is also on the cards. There will be something for everyone. Classic cars, muscle cars, motorbikes, tractors, luxury cars, trucks and

sports cars will be on show.

“If it has a motor and an owner who wants to display their pride and joy, we want to see it on show,” laughed Steve.

Local District Councillor, Craig Watson, Watson was roped in to the committee by his neighbour John and commented. “It has been incredible showing up to these shed meetings with twenty or thirty folk from all different backgrounds, but a common interest in all things with a motor,” said Craig.

“Honestly, I think this event is going to grow each year and become a feature event for the district. I hope grass roots initiatives such as this put to bed the ridiculous mutterings that there is no community spirit in Rolleston. Come along on November 26th and you will see what a vibrant and energetic young community we are.”

Also a member of the St John Area Committee, Craig is grateful the Motor Fest will in turn help support St John who are under constant pressure to both provide an important service and fundraise to deliver it.

The Rolleston School pupils won, and along with a trophy and certificates were also rewarded with a prize of $500 for the School’s PTA.

After a positive response to the rollout of Paws for Reading, the Selwyn District Libraries programme is now open for bookings at Leeston and Rolleston libraries in term four.

The programme encourages children to read to a friendly dog, helping them gain greater confidence reading aloud, as well as developing their literacy.

Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon s a i d f e e d b ac k o n t h e programme has been positive.

“After running the Paws for Reading trial in term two and three this year we have been very pleased with the feedback we’ve received from children and their parents,” she said.

“The volunteer dog owners selected by the Selwyn Dog Training Club have also enjoyed contributing to the children’s reading progress and seeing the enjoyment both dogs and children take from their interactions.”

Stanley (aged six) and Edward Goh (aged five) are brothers who have both attended Paws for Reading sessions at Rolleston Library. Stanley commented that he likes reading to the dogs because, “the dogs listen and like my stories”.

read to the dogs are books about cats. The boys’ mother Heather Goh says the sessions have been very beneficial to their reading confidence.

“Reading to dogs has helped them a lot with their reading and I have noticed they are now more comfortable reading out loud,” she said.

Catherine Nicol added that the programme has encouraged her son Toby to read. “He won’t read at home, but says it’s fun patting the dogs.”

With school now returned for term four, the ‘20K Either Way’ school bus campaign is under way to raise awareness of safe driving around school buses collecting or dropping off children.

Many Selwyn children in both rural areas and townships throughout the district take the bus to school.

Tony Rabbidge, Rabbidge Managing Director of Torlesse Travel Ltd which operates school buses in Selwyn commented that bus companies are always aware of safety when buses are stopped, but it’s up to everyone driving on the road to ensure that children are safe.

“Our drivers do not open the door until they can see the road is clear on country roads.

However, this does not work so well on busy highways. I drive a

bus every day myself and have felt frustrated with speeding vehicles passing us,” he said.

Recent reports suggest that many drivers are ignoring the 20 kilometre speed limit, with some not making any attempt to slow down at all. Drivers in a hurry who speed around a stationary school bus are a serious danger to school children getting off and on.

The seventh annual Hororata Highland Games have proudly announced that their Chieftain for 2017 is Hon Amy Adams, Adams MP for Selwyn. Hororata Community Trust Chair Richard Lang added, “when selecting a Chieftain we look for people who have served our community and/or have Scottish connections. Amy has always supported the work of the Trust and has been to every Games.

She has taken a vested interest in our community and we are thrilled that she accepted our invitation to fill the role of Chieftain in 2017,” Richard said.

In Scottish tradition, there is always a Chieftain who is the Master of Ceremonies and a key figure in the day’s activities.

Amy’s duties will include brandishing of the Chieftain’s sword at the welcoming ceremony and the presentation of trophies to the successful competition winners at the closing ceremony, following the

Grand March past of all the pipe bands.

“Having attended every Hororata Highland Games since the event began, I am delighted and honoured to have been asked to perform the role of Chieftain this year,” Amy said. “I am looking forward to the Games and am sure this year’s event will be as fantastic as always.”

Amy will be the first female Chieftain of the Hororata Highland Games. Past Chieftains include Simon Dallow (2011), Gerry Brownlee (2012), Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae (2013) and Sir Bob Parker (2014). 2015 saw the event’s first international Chieftain, Alex Bruce, Bruce Director of Adelphi Distillery, Scotland and in 2016 bagpipe rock star Kyle Warren travelled from Australia.

are a vibrant mix of international sporting event, surrounded by a funfilled festival. This is a community event which has grown from strength to strength each year. It takes a huge volunteer effort to stage and needs high-level support from people like Amy,” Richard said.

At ninety years old, Rolleston resident Les Cotton is a newbie to recreation classes. Les started attending following his wife’s death earlier this year and while he wasn’t initially sure about the class,, after giving it a go commented that he really enjoys it.

“I’ve met lots of new people and it’s very social, with coffee after.

It’s where you go to make new friends.”

Pat Jones, Jones age 87, has been going to the class for the last

six years and drives into Rolleston from Darfield twice a week. Pat added that she first started the class as a way to stay active, and has continued with it for the people.

“I just love it. I’ve made wonderful friends and the instructor Ingrid is very good. I had an accident two years ago and was so supported by the kind people I’ve met at the class. At Christmas time I buy vouchers for them to the local cafes where we meet after each class. My favourite activity is the rowing machine. It uses every muscle, and I like the challenge.

The bike is another favourite of mine,” she said.

At only $3 per class, Mature and Motivated is a low-cost way to keep fit. Instructor Ingrid Phelan added that the best part about taking the class is the people.

“They inspire me - it can be emotional seeing them interacting. The best part of the class is the people and the way they look out for each other. A typical class has thirty people in it, and the same ones turn up both days per week. It’s great seeing them all having fun and having a laugh,” she said.
