Recently the Clearview Primary School community watched as their long awaited and much anticipated mural underwent a grand unveiling.

The mural, which was twelve months in the making, initially

began with a small team of students from the school working with teacher, Adele Allport, Allport to create the design concept. Once this was completed pupils were encouraged to become involved,

The 3D components add flair to the design and kept school property manager, Ricky Hoffmeester busy putting them all together.

The mural takes pride of place at the main entrance of the school and is admired by all as they enter the school grounds.

It was an ambitious design that took many months to execute, but all would agree that it was well worth the effort.

which resulted in about 130 students working on the project.

The mural design features the four school houses; Earth, Air, Water and Fire. Tane Mahuta, the Clearview eye and the Waimakariri river are all featured prominently in the centre of the mural.

The mural also includes copper circles, which have the school’s values imprinted on them: Collaborate, Climb, Connect, Care, Create and Curious.

The St Paul’s Parish of West Melton are currently busy organising a Garden Tour to be held on Sunday, November 12th from 12pm to 4.30pm.

The afternoon will feature ten beautiful gardens located in the West Melton area. Organiser Amanda Haywood said “there will be a diverse range of gardens on display, from small town-sized gardens through to

medium and larger sized gardens.”

All of the gardens selected for the tour showcase the variety of plants that grow well in the Selwyn area, and they will be a great inspiration for local gardeners.

A sneak peek at one of the homes on the 2017 garden tour.

Travel has definitely been the theme for many Probus members recently, both locally and abroad.

Groups have visited Australia, Ireland and Europe, while another small group visited Thailand and enjoyed a ship’s cruise to Singapore to take in

the tourist sights.

Those at home delighted in a couple of interesting and informative outings; firstly to a farm growing cucumbers at Clarkville and then to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand at Wigram.

Mel has just kicked off her double-bill ‘Across the Ditch’ tour, paired with Australian musician Liz Stringer.

Stringer The tour started in Adelaide, and will take in eighteen shows across Australia and New Zealand over the coming weeks, with Hororata the last stop on October 14th.

Mel and Liz will be sharing songs from their back catalogues, along with select Kiwi and Aussie favourites that have helped shape them as artists. Both performers have distinctive voices, a story-telling bent and a dry humour that will have audiences laughing and crying, not necessarily in that order!

Mel is well known to New Zealand audiences, touring full time from international festivals to woolsheds in Selwyn’s own backyard, and has her third critically acclaimed album under her belt. Having last performed at the Hororata Hall in 2015 upon the release of ‘Drylands’, Mel is well known locally from numerous sell-out woolshed shows across the district with comedy duo The Bitches’ Box. Liz is a highly regarded songwriter and musician in her home country of Australia, who has toured internationally with a host of artists and now counts Bonnie Raitt in her ever-growing list of fans. Liz is returning fresh from a Canadian summer tour, completing just over a year of touring to support the critically acclaimed release of her fifth

garden locations, and there will also be the chance to visit a plant stall featuring Irises, Hostas, fruit trees and a variety of perennials, all at bargain prices for visitors to buy.

November is a fabulous time to view gardens, as most roses, peonies and irises are in full flower and are showcasing wonderful displays of colour before the heat of summer arrives. So the timing is perfect for a great afternoon of inspiration for the gardening months ahead.

All proceeds from the garden tour will go to the Parish of St Paul’s Anglican Church in West Melton.

GENTLY DOES IT Old-school peels administered by doctors, certainly had a reputa on for aggressively resurfacing skin, and a lot of down me. These type of peels are performed less nowadays, instead we use a course of lighter peels (which aren't medical-grade and therefore can be offered by qualified beauty therapists).

These peels are usually Alpha Hydroxy acids - such as glycolic from sugar cane, and lac c from milk - along with Beta Hydroxy acid (also known as salicylic acid) from willow bark.

This has resulted in the Shed having had some interesting projects on the go throughout the month.

There are currently pieces of board all over the shed, drying from being painted, before they will be assembled into tables for the Salvation Army's art workshops. Other projects have included the modification of a horse-float to provide better on board accommodation for the owner, construction of a sandwich board for the Prebbleton Community Association, and helping a woman from the community to Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton and Rolleston Men's Shed get her house ready for sale.

The Men’s Shed also assisted with an extensive tidying up of some internal storage, as well as some gardening.

The Shed is still happily receiving old batteries for recycling, as this is an ongoing fundraising opportunity and provides a welcome addition to funds for the Shed.

The Shed received some fantastic pieces of news this month. With the first being last week when Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton and Rolleston Men’s Shed Chairman, Stephen Rushton formally signed the lease between Selwyn District Council and the Rolleston Men’s Shed. The students at Rolleston School were recently the happy recipients of a Leafcutter Bee House.

The Bee House was kindly donated to the school by Rolleston New World as part of the New World 2017 Little Garden Promotion.

Fifty bees are housed inside and they will remain in hibernation until the temperatures reach twenty-one degrees for twenty-one days, which depending on the location in New Zealand, could be as early as October, or as late as January.

Leafcutters are a gentle breed of bees that specialise in pollination. They're regarded as solitary bees that are safe around children - they will only sting when directly squashed

and there have been no known cases of anaphylaxis in New Zealand as a result of a Leafcutter sting.

Growing the Leafcutter Bee population is part of a nationwide initiative with the goal being to reach fifteen million bees in five years. As a country New Zealand desperately needs a resilient bee population to pollinate fruit trees, flower gardens, and vegetables. The Leafcutter Bee is immune to Veroa Mites and will play an important role in maintaining pollination levels.

The students were excited to think they are contributing to the bee population and made Rolleston New World a thank you card in appreciation.

It has been a really busy few months at The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool & Nursery in Rolleston! So much fun has been had by all the children.

In the Nursery the tamariki are really interested in transport at the moment. Trains, cars, planes, to name but a few! So much so that one of the children’s Dads bought in a great big box which was then turned it into a bus. The children just loved sitting in it and pretending they were going for rides!

In the Preschool room (for ages 2 to 3.5) the children are really interested in animals in their natural environment. This has meant that they have been spending lots of time outside looking for worms and bugs and hearing all about the role these creatures play in the world. Of

course outside play involves lots of fun in the sandpit and water troughs too!

The tamariki in the Prep School room (for ages 3.5 to 5) have been learning about Space.

They have learned so much about the planets, the sun and the moon, all the mums and dads are amazed at the stories the children are telling them about the planets and

selection of food to choose for lunch and an entertaining range of live music, before an opportunity to finish the day off with a stroll around the beautiful Stover Garden.

This is a day not to be missed and tickets can be purchased through Eventfinda prior, or at the gate on the day.

The Prep School children have also been having lots of fun outside in the sandpit, with water play, and building creations on the construction table.

Tickets for 2017’s Methven and Foothills House and Garden Tour go on sale soon with the organisers promising a range of new and exciting properties to discover.

The tour takes place on Saturday, November 11th, beginning at 10am and is the third annual House and Garden tour to fundraise for Methven Care Trust. The Trust is the group spearheading a project to replace Methven House with a new purpose-built rest home within Camrose Estate. Their aim, by the provision of a new resthome, is to allow Methven locals and those from the surrounding area, an opportunity to continue to live in the community they love, as they age.

The Tour will see nine properties open for viewing, the same number as last year, with a new attraction being a cluster

in the countryside around historic Barrhill Village.

With these varying locations vehicles are required to get around the Tour.

On a quirky note, and for gin drinkers, there is the three bedroom farmer’s home, built five years ago, that is sure to generate a smile. A painting of a Bombay Sapphire bottle of gin, given as a gift to the owner, was their inspiration for the blue kitchen. Having also acquired the original Methven BNZ’s foyer doors prior to their build, it was inevitable these would feature as a truly inspiring entrance. Visitors will be rewarded with assorted classic vehicles and stationary engines on display, a part of the owner’s private collection.

Another of the rural properties features history detailing back to the mid 1800’s, but the current home was built in 1931.

However evidence of its earlier existence has been retained in the original leadlight glass windows and wooden panelling.

The garden consists of a formal area with buxus, along with rambling areas and a garden path. The vegetable garden boasts roses and lavender and fruit trees on its perimeter. A museum on site will be open on the day.

Devonshire teas will be offered again by Methven House staff at one of the properties and raffles will also be available, (organisers suggest bringing plenty of coins!).

Volunteers are now being sought for management of the properties on the day.

Tickets for the event go on sale in early October and Tour maps are forwarded via email the week prior to the event.

Last week Year 7 & 8 students from a number of local schools travelled to a range of locations throughout the Selwyn District to participate in the Koru Games which was run from September, 19th to 21st.

The Koru Games is a multi-day, multi-sport tournament for Year 7 & 8 students attending South Island schools and was created

by Selwyn Sport Trust. Last year alone more than 4000 plus students participated in the competition.

This year the sports included in the tournament were Badminton, Basketball, Boccia (for physically impaired athletes), Football, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Table Tennis, Tennis, Touch and Volleyball.

While competition is acknowledged as an inherent part of the games, a strong fair play attitude underpins all competitions and playing within the spirit of the games is a large part of the tournament and what

the children learn while participating.

Numerous local schools in the area had success at the Koru Games, with many groups coming home with the glory of first, second or third.

The three day tournament was another huge success and this years Year 7 students are looking forward to next year and getting another chance to attend the tournament.

Every four years at Clearview Primary the Year 5-8 students participate in a production.

This year it was all about ‘Porridge’. The production involved a crime wave hitting Happy Valley and a caseload of mysteries to be solved! Who's stolen Ma Hubbard's recipe book? Who's kidnapped Marigold the cow? And what secret was Papa Bear hiding behind his Porridge empire? It was down to Private Detective Jack Spratt to uncover the terrifying truth in this tale of mystery, mayhem and breakfast cereal!

The production journey began in Term 1 with the Production Team selecting the script and running auditions with over 100 children trying out for forty-five roles.

Roles were assigned and during terms 2 and 3 the cast had lines to memorise and actions to learn by attending many lunchtime rehearsals.

Finally, on September, 12th and 13th the hard work and dedication from everyone involved all came together and culminated into four unforgettable shows held at the Rolleston College auditorium.

Along with the main cast, all 350 children in Years 5-8 enthusiastically performed their class dance on stage.

The production was enjoyed by everyone, both those involved and those watching the show.

On Friday, September 15th Clearview Primary students assisted with ridding the Rolleston Community of rubbish as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful week.

The whole school was involved in cleaning up and each year group undertook different areas around the Rolleston township.

Once collected, the rubbish was taken back to school to enable everyone to see the results of the students’ efforts and celebrate the work done.

Prizes were given for some of the most interesting pieces of rubbish discovered which included a boogie board, a mattress, old road signs and a pile of old irrigation tubing!

In total, the students collected 400kg of rubbish.

The students were then rewarded for their hard work with a free sausage sizzle for lunch, run and organised by the Parent Community Group and with sausages donated by Rolleston New World.

Each year hundreds of groups, businesses and communities organise a local community clean up like this one as part of the ‘Keep New Zealand Beautiful’ initiative which takes place in September. It was expected that 50,000 people throughout New Zealand would take part in New Zealand’s largest clean up event over the week.

Heather Saunderson, CEO of Keep New Zealand Beautiful said, “at Keep New Zealand Beautiful, our mission is to educate the next generation of Tidy Kiwis and work together toward creating a better New Zealand.”

Clearview students have certainly made a difference to their community with the many bags of rubbish they collected.

Sunday, October 1st was a special day for the St John Selwyn Central Area Committee and the community. It marked the opening of Rolleston’s new a mb u l a nc e st a t io n a nd community rooms at Kidman St, Rolleston.

The day was a chance for St John to thank and recognise the Selwyn Community for their ongoing support of the project they have fundraised and built over the last three years.

Of special significance are the contributions of the Selwyn District Council, Generation Homes for their “no charge” project management, Rata Foundation for their early financial support and Pub Charity for providing the corner stones of the project.

The organisers were particularly pleased at the diverse groups and individuals that had put their film-making skills into showing their concerns and actions relating to this fragile environment.

Along with the traditional school entries, were independent adult entries, independent student entries and a youth club entry.

The numbers of entries to this competition have been steadily growing which organisers hope is indicative of a growing awareness and concern for the natural world.

On the evening of Friday, September 8th around 120 producers, actors, editors and all associated with the productions arrived at the Lincoln Event Centre to view the

movies and to hear who had won the various categories, along with the overall Kea Trophy. The standard was high and there were some excellent kindly donated prizes available, as we l l as f ood a nd refreshments - also donated.

All seemed in agreement that the event was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative occasion with such a variety of interesting films and messages on view. The Deputy Mayor of Selwyn, Malcolm Lyall presented Certificates and Prizes to entrants, as well as the Category Prize Winners, before the Trophy winners were announced.

building while our Taumutu blessed the new block by sprinkling water to welcome the new classrooms to our Kura,” explained a school spokesperson.

SEASON HAS NOW STARTED The fly and spider season is well underway.

The warmer weather has white-tail spiders out and about and of course many people are calling us to help them with these unpleasant squa-ers in their homes.

These guys are nocturnal and are normally only seen during the day if they are disturbed by someone or something, like dying drawers or wardrobes.

If you have lived in a house that had white-tails and you have moved houses you will have more than likely brought them with you to your new home.

The treatment we use at Spiderban controls spiders and flies, it doesn't kill them instantly, (anything that potent wouldn’t be safe for the occupants of the house) it takes three to four hours to shut down the nervous system of a white-tail.

Some mes aUer treatment owners are astounded to see a white-tail they never knew they had on the carpet or out on the wall unable to move. This is the nervous system shu ng down and the spider is unable to get back to cover.

Mostly they are just found dead under a couch or behind a wardrobe.

The best me to see if you have white-tails is if you get up in the night, then look along the edges of the skir ng boards or along the top of the walls.

If you have the old style down lights white-tails can quite oUen be seen on the ceiling near these, as they can come through from the roof space.
