Selwyn District Council, the New Zealand Police and Licensed premises across the district are once again participating in a Christmas/New Year drink drive campaign encouraging drivers to plan a safe ride home if they have had a few drinks.

Many people believe drivers who have been drinking have a lower chance of being stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads, but this is not the case. Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on all Selwyn roads over the Christmas/New Year holiday season. The booze bus will be deployed in both rural and urban areas.

“Drink driving is no longer acceptable as it puts everyone at risk of being injured or killed in a road crash that could have been completely avoidable,” said Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning.

Tinning In Selwyn district from 2011 to 2015, there were 151 crashes where alcohol was involved. These crashes resulted in twelve fatalities, thirty four serious injuries and fifty eight minor injuries.

“In many cases when drivers are affected by alcohol, inappropriate speed and failure to wear a safety belt also contribute to the severity of the crash. Not surprisingly, most of these types of crashes occur between Friday evening and Sunday morning,” Ngaire added.

This year’s campaign encourages drivers who drink, to choose not to drive, but to think about having a sober driver, using the courtesy van and sharing the designated driver duties. It also

focusses on looking out for friends by discouraging mates from driving after they’ve been drinking and encouraging them to sleep over so they can avoid driving when drunk.

As part of the campaign, posters, coasters, bar mats and pens will be given out to hotels, taverns and other licensed premises in Selwyn in late November and early December.

“Police will be active in Selwyn operating check points and policing the roads in an effort to ensure that everyone is safe,” commented Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police. “Police encourage motorists to plan to have a sober driver and if utilising licensed premises in Selwyn to make use of the courtesy vehicles available.”

“Our local hotels and taverns already do a great job with host responsibility, with almost all having courtesy vans,” Ngaire said. “Each year as part of our road safety campaign, we distribute free resources to licensed premises to encourage and support their host responsibility activities.

“A large number of our sports’ clubs and local businesses have also taken up the opportunity to assist with the promotion of the campaign safety messages to their members and staff.

“We are very pleased we are able to continue to provide these free resources to local venues and truly appreciate the support they give us each year in sharing this important message,” Ngaire concluded.

It’s been a huge year of changes for the Malvern and Rolleston News - actually the biggest changes in our trading history.

Our much loved, and very, very cute little office was required to be removed (for an ‘urgent redevelopment’) from Darfield’s main street. However thanks to local Real Estate company, Farmlands we were able to take over their lease on 62 South Terrace, Darfield (next to the Bakery) and establish ourselves in much larger premises. Timely indeed as the News has become busier, and busier. We cannot thank our supporting advertisers enough - we know it’s been said before, but there would be no News without this support. Some of our advertisers have been with us since day one! We so appreciate your business and by it your indication that we are doing something right - we are a small ‘community’ paper, in our ‘community’ and we hope we know our niche market. We so love bringing the stories of success (the occasional failure!) and the happenings and goings-on from the area in which we all live - we value the contributions you send in to us and thoroughly enjoy publishing them.

It is hard to believe that we are now into December and Christmas is fast approaching. It has been a busy year for me in Parliament working on a variety of legislation, with a particular focus on measures to tackle family violence in my role as Minister of Justice. In my role as Minister for Communications I have continued to work hard to improve connectivity in rural areas around the country, as well as overseeing the roll-out of UltraFast Broadband in urban centres.

It has also been a busy year here in the Selwyn electorate. I have held coffee meetings around the district and Springfield, and will be holding more of these next year to give you the opportunity to come and meet me in a location convenient to you.

Local highlights for me this year included the Malvern A & P Show in March and the Hororata Highland Games and the Courtenay A & P Show in November.

I would like to wish all of the readers of the Rolleston News a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. I hope that you have the opportunity to take a break and spend time doing what you love, whether that is relaxing with family and friends at the beach, reading a good book or getting out for a tramp in the bush.

The official opening of the West Melton Village Shopping Centre took place on Friday, November 25th, with Selwyn MP Amy Adams opening the new facility.

“Given the rapid growth in West Melton in the past five years and ongoing development in the surrounding area, this Centre is a timely and welcome addition to the local community,” Amy said.

The Centre, known as West Melton Village, comprises approximately 2600m 2 of leasable space made up of thirteen tenancies. Businesses to have opened in the Centre so far include a supermarket, a beauty salon and a hairdresser.

Amy commented that she had already visited the supermarket in the West Melton Village herself as a customer and was looking forward to using the services of other businesses in the Centre in the future.

“As well as offering convenient local services to the community, the Centre will also provide employment opportunities for a significant number of local people,” Amy finished.

A swarm of bees is a colony on the move to a new home and rarely stay in one place for much more than overnight, un l they find their new home. If one should be passing through your property please don't try to hurt or upset them, just keep your doors and windows shut, keep the kids inside and let them experience one of the wonders of nature. A@er a rest the bees will move on and it can be quite spectacular to see them all raise into the air, swirl around and fly off. The sound of the swarm can be quite loud. I have seen them on an ornamental tree and it was hardly able to hold up the weight. If you have a bee colony at your home that has decided to stay, call Grant on 021 440 161 - he will be more than happy to come and collect them, and they will become a produc ve hive.

As for bumble bees they have a nes ng me of four to five months, and then it's all over.

Due to their gene cs no male has a father, or can have sons; only grandfathers and grand sons. They are harmless unless you stand on one, or squeeze one in your hand. The popula on of their nest can be from eighty to about 400, they don't produce honey so are not the same problem for example as honey bees in a house wall, where the honey becomes a problem. So these wee guys’ nests are quite rare and are best le@ alone.

The main speaker at the October, Rolleston Combined Probus’ meeting was Peter Townsend, Townsend Chief Executive of the Christchurch Employers Chamber of Commerce. Peter is also on the Earthquake Recovery Advisory Board and it was in this capacity that he gave a very interesting talk covering many aspects of the recovery programme. He is passionate and excited about the progress made so far and the plans for the immediate and long term future. He left the Group with a very positive view of the rebuild.

The meeting’s mini speaker was one of its members, Helen Hayward, Hayward who spoke about her personal background and displayed some of the beautiful quilts she had made using material from her late husband's vast collection of ties.

Members encountered a glorious Canterbury day for their monthly outing, which took the form of a car rally on a circuitous route to Terrace Station, at Hororata. The property dates from the 1850s and was purchased by John Hall

in 1861. The southern boundary, which consists of large terraces on the banks of the Rakaia River, is the reason John Hall, whose great grandson Brian is the current Rolleston Probus President, gave the Station its name. Most of the original land has been passed on to descendants and much of this has been sold off.

That which remains has been placed into a Trust, which is the only practical way to maintain it in its current condition. The beautiful hom estead i s surrounded by about one hectare of garden and Probus members enjoyed lunch out on the lawn. They also enjoyed the informative talk given by Kate Foster (nee Hall) Hall and her husband Richard, Richard who currently live there. The group then dispersed to look around the property, with the women heading for the house and garden, while the men headed for the sheds! It seemed as though nothing has been thrown out in one hundred plus years, so everybody found a little bit of their personal heaven.

Applications for the 2017 Selwyn Youth Council are now open and young people aged between fourteen and 24 years who live in Selwyn are encouraged to apply.

The Youth Council is made up of ten young people with support from Selwyn District Council.

“By joining the Selwyn Youth Council you could help make life better for local young people by representing their views to the Council and other organisations,” commented Maddie Tasker, Tasker a member of the current Youth Council. Youth Council members can encourage young people to participate in

“Most of the guys at the Rolleston Men’s Shed are keeping themselves busy with projects, either for themselves or for the community,” reported Men’s Shed spokesperson, Neil Bennett, Bennett “and they’re loving every minute of it.”

“The sculptures that we’re creating for Rolleston School are looking good and we are on the third of eighteen. Jade, Jade a teacher at Rolleston School, came and viewed them recently and was over the moon with what we’d done, which was heartening for us all.”

Men’s Shed men have either completed, or currently have on the go, numerous woodworking projects, including one for the Rolleston Library. Quite a lot of work is going into ‘the cubby’ that will assist children with their reading books.

“In the engineering shed we are making a barbecue trailer, intended to be taken to functions for sausage sizzles, bacon and egg butties etc,” Neil commented.

“We had a wonderful day at the recent Clearview School Fete; sold lots of items and spread the word about the Shed,” Neil added. “So much so that in the week following we attracted five new members. We were also at the Rolleston Community Fireworks night too,” he said, “and that was another great event with more new members.”

“Our Men’s Shed is not all about working, but also about catering for those who need male company and due to health or disability cannot work in the workshops. We have packs of cards, jigsaws, games and books, along with very good coffee,” Neil smiled. “Any men who are a bit lost and with time on their hands, maybe due to

losing their partner, are welcome to come along on a Monday, Wednesday or Saturday morning (9am-12 noon).”

“Actually,” Neil said, “9.55am is a really good time, because you can join us for morning tea.”

“We have done a trade with the Ashburton Shed for a number of items and Bishopdale Shed have just picked up equipment that we have no immediate use for. A very big thank you to Trevor O’Brian who has lent us long term, some very valuable equipment. Items such as a lathe, drill mill, planer, saw bench and metal cutting bandsaws have assisted us considerably and are much appreciated,” Neil concluded.

Local Burnham resident Sophie Griffith and her mount Frangelico F recently returned from the North Island CDI-Y (International Dressage Event) after a successful weekend at the Class 40 Pryde’s Easifeed CDI-Y Individual Test.

The Warehouse’s new South Island distribution centre in Rol l es ton ha s won an international award. Up against entries from Europe, Middle East and Asia, it won ‘Best Industrial Project’ category at the Tekla Global BIM (building information modelling) awards.

On the Saturday Sophie took part in the CDI-Y musical freestyle in front of three International judges and two New Zealand judges. After a lovely test to music from the movie ‘Finding Nemo’ Sophie came in second with a score of 67.300%.

Sophie, who has just finished her second year at Lincoln University on an Elite Equestrian scholarship, is coached by Brugs Nichols of Grange Road Burnham. Brugs flew up on the Thursday and stayed with Sophie until the end of the competition.

“It is always good when Fran does well. So much time and effort has gone into her training over the years, it makes it all worthwhile,” Brugs commented.

Frangelico will compete in the Canterbury Champs later this year and then up to Feilding again early next year for the Nationals. After that Sophie and Fran will be working towards Grand Prix under the ever watchful eye of Brugs.

The Holmes’ BIM team drew the original centre in 2D and then a 3D model of the new part of the facility, smoothly integrating old and new models. The Warehouse now has exceptionally accurate, useable information for maintenance and potential future extensions.

In June 2016 a new charity was set-up by Rolleston local Christina Buckland and her friend Joy Reid (a TVNZ journalist). The initiative called ‘From One Mother to Another’, provides gift bags to distressed Mums and Caregivers who find themselves in the Children's Acute Assessment Unit (CAA) at Christchurch Hospital. The concept has taken off, with the packing of another four hundred gift bags planned over the coming weeks to ensure every Mother through the unit over Christmas, receives a pack.

“We also want to provide extra bags to Mums and Carers in the Children's Haematology Oncology Centre ward,” the pair added.

“The concept was born in April when my doctor rushed me and my daughter Arabelle to the CAA ward,” Christina recalled.

“It was a stressful, emotional and difficult day. Even though the staff were truly amazing, it was a rather scary and uncertain place to be. While in the unit, Arabelle was given an age appropriate 'goodie' bag full of things to entertain her. It

Mark and Kelsey Williams have been Dairy farming in Aylesbury for five years. Over the last twelve months they have been organising and undertaking training to enable them to sell Raw Milk from their dairy farm at Aylesbury Road.

Raw Milk means that it has not been pasteurised, a process that heats milk to a high temperature for a short period of time to kill all the live organisms, good and bad, that are present in milk.

“We have two vending machines on site, one that sells one litre glass bottles (which are reusable) and one which fills the bottles with fresh Raw Milk,” Mark said. “We milk a special herd of Friesian/Jersey cross heifers which are selected for the highest quality milk. These heifers (two year olds) are mainly fed grass with a small amount of silage each day, after milking.

“These cows are only milked once a day in the afternoon, before our main herd,” Mark added.

“This is to ensure the plant is in pristine condition and a lot of care is taken to make certain that the milk is harvested to the highest standards.

“Earlier this year the Ministry for Primary Industries brought in new rules surrounding the production and sale of Raw Milk to the public.

This has made the industry more regulated and safer for consumers which means we run a very stringent testing and auditing programme.

“We have been open a month now and are enjoying the fact that people who buy Raw Milk

was a little ray of light in her world that morning,” Christina added.

“It gave me the idea to put a pack together for Mums and Carers in an effort to encourage and improve their day too. I self funded the first ten packs, then a few friends contributed and now we have the support of many local businesses. We have had the most amazing feedback from the ward staff.”

The pair now supply around fifty packs per month to the staff at the CAA ward who then give out the packs to those Mothers and Carers who they feel need some encouragement. “It’s usually those who are under a lot of stress/ pressure or those with very young babies,” Christina explained.

“Each pack is filled with wonderful goodies, some are practical and some are purely indulgent.”

Items in the packs have either been generously donated from businesses, purchased using donations, or are beautifully hand made goods.

Clark Land Surveyors Ltd Rolleston Netball Club are pleased to report they have completed a successful 2016 season, have held their AGM and are now looking forward to an even better 2017 season.

“We are excited to welcome back many of our 2016 committee for another year, and are also pleased to have three new members join us,” said Club Secretary Mary Wiering.

On Saturday, November 5th, bowlers from the West Melton Bowling Club travelled to Kirwee to challenge Kirwee Bowling Club for the Le Compte Cup. There was a good turnout of players from both Clubs, but it was West Melton’s day, winning the Cup

by twelve games to three.

Congratulations to Bob Shorter (Development Squad) and Bob Burnett (Seniors) who were selected to play for Canterbury Country in the Intercentre Competition against North Otago and South Canterbury on December 4th.

The qualifying rounds of the Malvern Open Men’s Singles were played on November 13th at West Melton and Darfield.

Mike Leigh, Brian Hecker, Bob Shorter and Bob Burnett qualified for post section play to be held at Kirwee on Sunday November 27th.

Tuesday November 29th saw the arrival of new large, preprinted, artificial activity turf at Rolleston School.

Gifted by Sky, Rolleston School was one of eleven primary schools around Christchurch to receive the turfs, after they lost or incurred significant damage to their playing fields in the earthquakes. The turfs are worth $20,000 each and are part of the Sky’s five year, $1 million dollar commitment to help repair the city.

Sport Canterbury chief executive Julyan Falloon said Sky’s generous $200,000 donation for the turfs will allow his organisation to deliver exciting new activities to the mostly lowdecile schools.

“The activity turfs will enable children of all ages and abilities to play and have fun. They’re a very valuable resource for the schools which will be able to teach games and help children develop their movement skills.

“A number of schools lost their outdoor play areas in the earthquakes. In addition, population shifts meant some schools saw their decile rating change, which meant they lost funding. Others had an influx of pupils, resulting in new buildings

taking up space on the playing fields.”

Rolleston Primary School principal Darryn Aitchison agreed and commented, “our roll has grown 30% in the past five years which has had a significant impact on the amount of play space available for our children. This has made it very hard for teachers to organise physical education and sport so the SKY portable turf will make a real difference for our pupils.”

SKY’s $1 million commitment to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust has seen it donate to various sport and recreational facilities, and this year the funding went to the artificial turfs.

“We decided to concentrate our efforts o n spo rts and recreational facilities as these are fundamental to the health and wellbeing of local communities, particularly their young people,” commented Kirsty Way, Way Director of Communication Sky TV. Kirsty was also at Rolleston School On Tuesday, November 29th to see the first ball kicked and the first bat swung on the new turf - and fortunately no knees were skinned!

Olympic Athlete (middle distance runner) Angie Petty also visited the children at Rolleston to celebrate the arrival of the turf.
