On Saturday, March 19th Rolleston held their first ever Music on the Green session and what a success it was!

Around 3,500 have attended the various summer events held in Selwyn this year which have included a Teddy Bear's Picnic, the World Buskers’ Festival Roadshow, pool parties, picnics, free concerts, skate jams and drive in movies. The sheer number of people attending these free community events is more than enough evidence to deem the initiative a huge success. The Music on the Green events were a series of free concerts that not only provided outstanding entertainment for the crowds attending, but also allowed local artists to promote their musical skills. Definitely proving that amazing talent does not have to be sought out internationally - but can be found right on one’s doorstep.

New Zealand Army medic and Defence Health School instructor Corporal Kelly Whittle is honoured to be selected to represent the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) at the Invictus Games 2016.

Originally from Southland, Corporal Whittle will compete in cycling, power lifting, shot put, and discus events in Florida.

The Invictus Games provides an international stage that unites wounded, ill and injured Service men and women from around the world. The Games enable both active duty personnel and veterans to learn and share through their common experiences.

Corporal Whittle who tore hip cartilage whilst on deployment to Afghanistan, said she is proud to be part of the team this year.

“It is very humbling to be chosen to represent the NZDF for a second time.

“I am most looking forward to travelling with a larger team, meeting inspirational people from other countries, swapping stories and memorabilia with others, and representing the NZDF with one of my close friends,” she said.

Corporal Whittle said that the service men and women who compete at the Invictus Games prove that no matter what has happened to them in the past, it does not define who they are now.

Each person has an individual story that can inspire someone else to better the life they have now.

“Recovery through sport can assist in building you back to the person you were before your injury and meeting others who have been or are in the same situation as you can inspire you to want more,” she said.

Corporal Whittle hopes to build on her medal haul this year following the double silver medals she won in the discus and shot put events at the London 2014 Invictus Games.

The Invictus Games will take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida between May 8th and 12th, 2016.

More than 500 competitors from fifteen countries will compete in ten adaptive sports – including archery, road cycling, power lifting, indoor rowing, athletics, swimming, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and sitting volleyball.

The sixth annual Leeston Fete is fast approaching and, as always, promises to be an outstanding day. Taking place on Saturday, April 16th, from 10am it’s a wonderful opportunity for a drive to the township of Leeston, where the High Street will be closed to cars, but open to lots of fun!

Last year thousands of people came from Leeston and surrounding areas to enjoy the day, and this year is already looking like it’ll be even bigger and better. Fete-goers will have an opportunity to enjoy a special entertainment area with live music and there are already more than one hundred stalls planning to attend. There’s bound to be something for everyone as stallholders

showcase unique handcrafts, exquisite adults and children's clothing, jewellery, antiques and collectables. Organisers have laid on free children’s entertainment that includes a bouncy castle, face painting, clowns and water walkers, meaning that the junior members of the family are well and truly catered for.

The food choices available are wide and varied. Culinary delights from Mexico, Vietnam, and the Mediterranean, along with seafood and ice creams etc. make decision-making difficult!

Numerous local organisations will use the Fete for essential fundraising, as well as to be on hand to provide community information at the event.

Last year’s Fete was a huge success with this year’s expected to bring in an even bigger crowd!

Rolleston Netball Club (RNC) have been enjoying a busy start to the year. Trials have now been completed with members and teams allocated. “It has been wonderful to see so many people that are keen to participate in this great winter sport!” said a delighted Mary Wiering, Wiering RNC Secretary. There are currently fourteen Senior, Masters and Social teams and a fourteen year old team. To cater to the rising number of junior players there are a number of Year 5-8 and also Year 1-4 teams which will play their own tournaments throughout the season.

Round one of the competition officially starts on Saturday, April 18th. However, preparations for the season are well underway; RNC put forward two teams to trial for premier grades at a preseason tournament last weekend at Lincoln (Selwyn Netball Centre). At the time of going to print the outcome was yet to be confirmed.

“Thanks again to all our members, volunteers (especially coaches) and supporters, we couldn't enjoy and have so many participate in the game without you all,” enthused Mary.

Eco-Warriors from West Melton Primary School have done it again! On March 12th, they took part in the Odering’s Nursery School Garden Competition which is run by the Christchurch Horticultural Society and gained silver status for their efforts.

“The exhibitions were top rate and incredibly well put together so it was fantastic for us to improve on our Bronze win from last year,” said Rita Spadoni, a West Melton spokesperson.

Ten Christchurch schools participated in the competition with their entries based on the given theme of ‘Our World’.

Each exhibit was judged by a panel of experts according to several criteria – the wow factor, design and theme, educational elements and construction, presentation and finishing – these requirements determined an entry’s bronze, silver or gold award.

West Melton School’s entry was created with local surroundings and the wider environment in mind.

“Our river flows from the oceans of the globe to our local braided river – the Waimakariri,” Rita said. “The driftwood rake we included represents our local heritage and the legend of Tü Te Raki and his rake.

Native trees, like the kowhai, represented the trees and bushes planted by the school at our local Kowhai Sanctuary to feed and sustain the local native birds. The flaxes and native grasses reflect again the Sanctuary and our native garden at school that also is designed to attract the insects that will feed the birds.

“The selection of vegetables represents the patchwork of crops that can be found on the Canterbury Plains and around the West Melton district. While the inclusion of a recycling bin, located in all of our learning communities, reflects the sust ain abl e practic e of recycling, composting and

“At West Melton we have four worm farms, fed with food scraps, and producing vermicast which is either sold, or put onto the School vegetable plots.

“The artwork birds reflect the school’s commitment to the establishment of plantings to support birds and insects in our

local eco systems. The rainbow was the communal work of the students at West Melton School with the collective house colours linking everyone to the land,” Rita concluded.

The students are reportedly already excited about the next competition!

RODENTS (RATS AND MICE)

NZ Army's MHOV being put through it's paces by some keen (and rather small) potential soldiers at the Children’s Day activities in Rolleston recently.

The was shining down on over 1500 people in Selwyn for The Selwyn Parenting Networks 2016 Children’s Day Celebration. The event, held in Rolleston on March 6th, attracted many families from near and far to celebrate and show appreciation for children in the community.

Bouncy castles, mega slide, petting farm, pony rides and Skate Jam were just some of the firm favourites on the day.

Children flocked to have their faces painted and were entertained by Willow the fairy and astounded by Sport Suzie’s circus show. The Selwyn District

Council’s ‘Fun on Wheels’ trailer also provided entertainment for everyone.

Sensational Selwyn Youth worked tirelessly in the Pop Up Café serving delicious coffees and refreshing ice cream sundaes to parched patrons many of whom had been browsing the car boot market looking for treasures. Thanks to sponsors, over 1,300 sausages were given out, fuelling those who had worked up an appetite participating in all the fun activities on offer. Ice blocks were well received too, as the day warmed up.

special to those at the Selwyn Parenting Network. “We strive to provide an opportunity for everyone in our community to come together and enjoy a free fun day,” explained Events Coordinator, Marianne McLenaghan.

“The support we receive not only from our funders, but from local businesses and groups is overwhelming. We would like to thank all the local businesses that contributed to making this day a fun-filled and action packed community event,” she concluded.

You may feel summer is not the me to be thinking about rats and mice around your property, but by the me the seasons change it is usually too late, they are in. It is a good idea at this me of the year to check all the weep holes at the boAom of the brick work on your outside walls. If you can push the thick end of a ballpoint pen into the hole - a mouse can enter. Get yourself some galvanised whitebait mesh and cut it into widths the height of the slot, and then cut to about 75mm long. Fold in half (not a ght fold) and push into the weep holes. When you let it go it will open to fit the slot, do not use any thing that will block off the air flow or stop moisture from ge ng out of the walls. Heavy plan ng around the walls of your home is not the best idea as rodents like cover and can become very ac ve. Check around your waste pipes for gaps, and also the door jambs either side of your garage doors where they meet the floor slab. There are quite oHen large gaps in these areas, larger gaps can be filled with a sand and cement mix and painted to match the house. Mice generally live in about a ten metre by ten metre cube and don’t travel far out of this area. They pee about 3,000 mes a day marking their area and leaving pheromones, that’s why they are considered so dirty and should be controlled with urgency. BeAer to keep them out, so block up holes.

Rats on the other hand will travel ninety or so metres to food, or play. Walnut trees, fruit trees, and compost are great for bringing them around. AHer feeding it’s play me and they love to climb, so roof and ceiling spaces are great.

Cut away all trees and climbers at least a metre from your spou ng, while pergola poles can have a wide plas c band aAached to stop them ge ng a grip to climb, like a possum ring on a power pole. It’s a good idea to have three or so rat bait traps against the walls of your house. Once set up don’t touch them for at least a couple months as rats are very shy. AHer a couple of months check them - if they show no nibbling, move them to a new area. Re-bait those that need it and leave in the same posi on. Use rat sta ons because they will do both rats and mice.

Note there won’t be dead rats or mice in the bait sta on when you open them, but remember rats and mice are in townships just as prolifically as in the countryside.

So the message for rodent control is that preven on is our strongest weapon.

The first major multi field LED light system to be installed on a New Zealand sports ground has now been installed at Foster Park and the lights are on! The ever-growing population of Rolleston were invited to attend the ‘switching on the lights’ ceremony held on Monday, March 7th. Selwyn Mayor, Kelvin Coe had the honour of conducting the ceremony which was followed by a guided walk around the area and discussions were had about visions for the future of the Park.

The new LED lights are more energy efficient than normal lights and have a longer lifetime.

They provide concentrated lighting in the evenings at the

sports fields, with little spill over into surrounding areas. The new lighting system can also be turned on and off remotely.

When fully developed, the Park will have around twenty playing fields, and will be used by a range of sports codes for competition and training. The first ten fields are nearly ready for use during the coming winter season. The Park will also include a large children’s play area, family picnic space, events’ space and extensive walking and cycling paths.

In April, a community planting day will be held at the Park and a daffodil display created to bloom in the springtime. The planting days will take place from 9.30am to 12pm on

Sunday, April 10th and Saturday, April 16th. The work is not heavy or taxing physically as holes have been drilled before planting.

They displayed obvious pride during their performance as they had written the lyrics for the rap themselves. The filming of the accompanying music video was created at various locations around the school to give it a truly authentic ‘Weedons’ feel.

There were a large number of entries in the video competition which enabled the judges to again offer category prizes.

The High School section was taken out by an independent mixed group calling themselves ‘Swash Show’.

“It was great to have a High School winning team that had come together independently to tell us of the threats to the fish in our rivers. The actors ‘emerged’ from a River to tell us

how they (as fish) were struggling to survive the various pollutants that they now had to live with,” explained Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn Project Manager for Lincoln Envirotown Trust.

Geraldine Pre-School (who have become regular guest entrants) won the Pre-school category with their video ‘Buzzing to Learn’. The video contained some wonderful footage of bees in their gardens and it was clear that the children were aware of what threatened bees and the impact that a diminishing bee population would have on the growing of fruit and other foods.

The event was supported by Selwyn District Council and the Rata Foundation through their support of LET. It was also supported by Creative Communities Scheme, along with some very supportive businesses.

A Ceilidh is a traditional Gaelic social gathering; one of which, was held recently at Lincoln High School hall.

The event, organised by Lincoln Envirotown to celebrate Earth Hour was held on Saturday, March 19th and based on the attendance numbers and feedback, the night was an outstanding success. Despite the hot evening, approximately a hundred people aged 3-93 danced the night away to music from the local Southern Celtic Fiddle Orchestra featuring the caller, Trevor Robertson.

“The truly atmospheric part of the evening was during Earth Hour itself when the band came down onto the dance floor to play unplugged with no electric

lighting. It was unanimously agreed that the new Ceilidh format was a great success. It culminated in a wonderful rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at the end of the evening,” described Dave Fitzjohn, Fitzjohn Project Manager for Lincoln Envirotown Trust.

“Lincoln students were very much the driving force of the evening. In this respect we would like to thank the University Global Scholars for their organisation, Lincoln University students including the Lincoln Environmental Organisation (LEO) members, Lincoln High School including the Enviro Council students,” concluded Dave.

The 2016 Junior National Rock n Roll Championships were held recently (March 25th-28th) at the Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua. The championships, hosted by Kapi Mana Rock'n'Roll Club saw some local rock n’ rollers achieve personal best performances as did all the dancers attending from the Christchurch Rock‘n’Roll Club. It resulted in each Club member attending returning home with well deserved medal, as well as some creditable placings to boot.

On March 8th, 2016 the Rolleston Combined Probus Club held their AGM and had the opportunity to elect new committee members (as pictured above). Probus is a social organisation which caters to persons who are retired, semi-retired or about-to-retire.

It is a wonderful way to meet others who are also in the ‘golden’ stage of life, for fun and companionship.

Ex Club president (2005-2007) Esme Humm initially acknowledged the local demand for a Probus Club and was one of the founding members. She continues to be involved and in

recognition of her contribution to the Club, there was a unanimous vote at the AGM to make her a life member.

A example of one of the group’s typical days out is outlined below by Probus member Graeme Scott; Scott “On Tuesday, March 22nd a group of fifty Probus members went on an outing to the Tannery Shopping Centre in Garlands Rd, Christchurch.

“Following this, we went to the Watershed Hotel for Lunch and then on to Sumner, finishing our day in the Botanic Gardens. A very pleasant day was had by all.”

A number of Clearview students are members of the Selwyn Athletic Club and on March 12th and 13th these athletes competed at the 2016 Canterbury Children's Athletic Association Championships in Timaru.

The athletes certainly did their School proud with countless personal bests and finalist placings. Of special mention was Neihana Mata'afa who broke the Canterbury record for the shot put, with a throw of 9.50 metres and who was selected to represent Canterbury (Grade 711) to compete at the 995 Meeting which was held in Timaru on March 20th 2016.

Luke Barrett also had an outstanding weekend, placing second overall in his age group

and was selected to represent Canterbury (Grades 12-13) at the Interprovincial meeting in Dunedin, held at Easter.

The best rugby league competition in the world is coming back to Christchurch in 2016 when the Penrith Panthers take on the New Zealand Warriors on May 14th, 2016. The round 10 match at AMI Stadium, will kick off at 5pm.

Panthers say they are delighted to be breaking new ground and will play a home fixture in the city for the next two NRL seasons, with an option for another two years. Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould heralded the deal as a significant step in the growth and development of rugby league.

"Over the next four years we hope to build a strong relationship with the area and have committed ourselves to the promotion and development of rugby league through junior league and schools’ programmes.”

The Penrith Panthers have a raft of engagements planned for their Christchurch visit including Junior Skills Clinic, school visits and dinner engagements.

The forthcoming match is supported by the Christchurch City Council, with Mayor Lianne Dalziel welcoming the game’s return and commenting that this is another big step in reclaiming the city’s preearthquake position as one of New Zealand’s top venues for major events.

“Christchurch is a city that loves our sport and we are proud to be hosting the NRL and we want to commend the Penrith Panthers for committing their home games to Christchurch,” Lianne added.

2016 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Penrith Panthers joining the NRL - the top professional Rugby League competition in the world. The NRL was founded in 1998 when two rival Australian Rugby League and Super League competitions, combined and is now the third largest sport in Australia, comprising of sixteen teams. The New Zealand Warriors, founded in 1995, and based at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland are the only NRL team from outside Australia. In their seventeen seasons in the NRL they have achieved: One minor premiership (2002), two grand final appearances (2002 and 2011) and seven play-off appearances, as well as providing the majority of Kiwis national team players.

This Province has a long history in the sport with Canterbury Rugby League founded in 1912 and 148 teams currently participating in weekly competition, so it’s not surprising that fans from around Australia and New Zealand have jumped at the opportunity of securing tickets to see the NRL in Christchurch.

On February 24th, Kirwee and West Melton ladies held their annual challenge for the Florrie Calder Trophy. West Melton won the trophy on their own grounds. Previously, the trophy had been held by Kirwee for four years, by four games to one and one drawn.

The Kirwee Fours were held on March 13th. Bob Shorter, Derrol Fitzgibbon, Mike Burke and Terry Butland from West Melton were not only great on the day, but were also convincing winners.

February and March saw the completion of several Club championships. In the Men’s Club Championship Pairs final, Bob Shorter and Ron McNicholl prevailed over Mike Leigh and John Waller, Waller while Ali Gardiner won the Ladies Open Singles Championship.

Rolleston Train Station, 1909 which served as a major railway junction from around 1880 to 1980.

Rolleston residents and businesspeople are being invited to help plan celebrations for the town’s 150th anniversary celebrations later this year.

A public meeting was held at Selwyn District Council on Tuesday, March 15th to form an organising committee which will oversee the planning and running of events to mark the anniversary.

Selwyn Central Community Board chair, Councillor Jeff Bland, said the committee will play a key role in ensuring that a range of appropriate celebration events take place.

“This is an exciting milestone for Rolleston,” he said. “It’s grown tremendously over the decades, especially in recent years, and it’s important that we mark the town’s history and development in suitable style.”

Councillor Bland advised that anniversary events are likely to begin in October. A number of ideas have already been floated, he said, including projects capitalising on the town’s railway theme, along with displays of historic photographs and the history of local street names and locations.

Rolleston was named after William Rolleston, Rolleston who served as the last Superintendent of Canterbury from 1868-76. The town was founded as a settlement when the railway terminus was opened in October 1866, and it served as a major railway junction from around 1880 to 1980.

Rolleston remained relatively small for much of its early history, reaching a population of 1,000 in the 1990s. Today the population is estimated at 13,500.

The blonde woman desperately wanted a pair of beau ful alligator shoes. AHer becoming very frustrated with the a tude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, “well then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!”

The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, “well liAle lady, why don't you go give it a try?”

The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator.

Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spoAed the young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand.

He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blonde took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank.

Nearby were seven more dead 'gators, all lying belly up. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blond struggled with the 'gator. Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in frustra on ......
