It’s now easier and closer to get banking done in Selwyn as the ANZ celebrated the opening of its new branch in Rolleston on Friday, February 12th.

ANZ recognises Rolleston as one of the fastest growing areas in New Zealand and the Bank’s presence there is a real vote of confidence in the future of the town, which has seen strong migration since the earthquakes. “We have closed the Main South Road branch, but customers in that area are still served by the same friendly staff who have moved across to ANZ Hornby,” said Jonathan Ahlfeld, ANZ Business Banking Manager at Rolleston.

“Rolleston is a fantastic place to live, and has a thriving business community too,” he added.

The opening ceremony was attended by about 25 people, including local Selwyn MP, Amy Adams, Adams the Deputy Mayor of Selwyn Sarah Walters, Walters Selwyn District Council CEO David Ward, Ward local councillors, business leaders, developers and staff.

Amy gave a speech welcoming the addition of another bank to what is becoming a hub of banking around Rolleston

Square. “The opening of the ANZ branch is reflective of the significant growth in both the residential and business population in Rolleston and the greater Selwyn area during recent years,” Amy commented.

The design of the branch is the same as that used in Cashel Mall following the earthquakes, and in other locations around New Zealand to great success.

“The feedback has been terrific we even had one super excited customer who started dancing when she walked in because it saved her a fifteen-minute drive to the nearest branch,” Jonathan smiled. “The team is really looking forward to meeting the local community. I am a Rolleston local and I know how much it means to Rolleston to finally have New Zealand's largest bank in the community. We are making great progress down at the Shed - with the Engineering Shed just about finished. Once we have raised the funds to put the floor down, the shed will be complete. If any local businesses are interested in donating funds towards the completion of the Engineering Shed, we would be glad to give you publicity in return.

Our landscaping project is starting shortly and will see the whole area tidied up with carparks, pathways, driveway and fencing. The Woodworking Shed is working well and we are back doing jobs within the community. We are expecting a

TV crew at some stage as well, which hopefully, will raise more awareness of our efforts on the small screen.

We are also in the final stages of planning statues to be placed in parks in Rolleston. This project was originally started by Jade Bell.

Bell Jade is a teacher at Rolleston School and the artwork was designed by her young students. We are now charged with the manufacture of the life sized final statues and at last Rolleston will have some artwork.

Over the last month, we have had an influx of new members and we welcome those who

need some comradeship, want to work on their own projects or assist in the community. Our sessions at present are Wednesday and Saturday morning 9am until 12pm. We are considering adding another session when required. Smoko is provided, so do come and have a cuppa with us and see what we are all about.

We are still collecting old batteries so anyone with them lying around, please just drop them off at 54 Dynes Rd.

Bone Density Testing is coming to Rolleston. Osteohealth NZ is holding a bone density scanning clinic at Unichem Rolleston Central Pharmacy on Thursday, March 10th.

Osteoporosis is a growing problem in New Zealand with an estimated 70,000 sufferers.

Osteoporosis literally means 'porous bones' and is a condition where bones gradually become brittle and fragile, leading to an increased risk of fracture. It can affect both women and men, and while sufferers are usually over the age of fifty, younger people can develop it too.

As there are often no signs or symptoms, many people do not realise they have this disease until a fracture occurs.

“OsteoHealth’s goal is to help people prevent developing this disease later in life by detecting early signs of thinning bone mass u sing th e l atest ultrasound scanning technology and educating them about bone

‘ People came from far and wide to attend the Doyleston War Memorial Garden opening on Saturday, February 20th. Denise Sheat delivered a prayer spoken in Maori, translated by Rosaline Brown. World War I names were read aloud from the Roll of Honour by Bruce Gill who is a descendent of the McLachlan family (who has at least one family member recorded on the roll). World War II names were read out by Kevin Taylor who represented the Ellesmere RSA and the Doyleston Community.

John Lay, Lay Chairman of the Ellesmere RSA spoke of the disproportionate number of volunteers who left New Zealand to fight in both wars. He spoke particularly of 55 men and one woman (an Imperial Red Cross Nurse) who went to war and were from 29 families who lived over a six by two mile radius.

Selwyn residents are being encouraged to ‘swim’ to Rio de Janeiro over the next six months to help raise funds for the new St John ambulance station in Rolleston.

Selwyn Aquatic Centre launched its ‘Swim to Rio’ fundraiser this month, with participants aiming to cover the equivalent of the 11,765 kilometres from Lyttelton to Rio de Janeiro, and finish to coincide with the opening of the Olympic Games in Rio on August 5th.

Funds raised will go towards the St John Project Rolleston, which supports the new St John ambulance station currently under construction.

Selwyn Aquatic Centre manager Kathy Moore commented that the event was initiated by staff at the Centre, and followed on from a successful similar event last year.

“It’s a great way to get our staff and the community working together to help raise funds for a great cause,” she said.

“Taking part is really easy, and you don’t even have to be a swimmer. People can swim or aqua jog lengths of either the 25-metre pool or hydrotherapy pools at the Centre, and every length counts towards the total distance.”

“The more people we have taking part, the quicker we’ll get there. It might seem like a long way, but we’ve already had people completing over 100 lengths at a time - that’s a great start.”

The target distance of 11,765km is the combined distance of everyone taking

part. “For example, if one person completes 20 lengths of the main pool a day, they would cover 90 km over the six months - so around 130 people could reach the target in that time,” explained Kathy.

Participants can register with the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, and receive a sponsorship form, which they can use to recruit sponsors for their lengths, or for cash donations.

People can swim or aqua jog as often as they like during the period. They can record their lengths each time they swim, and will get regular updates on their own efforts and the total distance covered.

Swimwear supplier Speedo is supporting the event with spot prizes plus a Speedo Shine - a new activity, swim, and sleep tracker watch - for the person completing the most lengths.

Danielle Gillespie, Gillespie from the St John Central Area fundraising committee, said the group has

a target to raise $670,000 for the new station, and is delighted Selwyn Aquatic Centre is getting behind the project.

“We’d like to thank the Centre for their support. The new ambulance station is a big project for St John in Rolleston.

With the growth in Rolleston in recent years it is important that St John has facilities for us to provide ambulance services, as well as a resource available for the community if required.”

“Our new station and facility will allow us to continue to provide ambulance services to Rolleston, but we still have to fundraise for it. This support from the Selwyn Aquatic Centre is fantastic.”

The Lincoln Envirotown Trust is to co-ordinate a number of events around the Selwyn District on the night of Earth Hour and the evenings leading up to it. Earth Hour is an environmental movement initially organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and starting off as a modest lights out event in Sydney to raise awareness abut the negative effects of climate change. The concept of using people power to highlight climate change quickly grew into a global phenomenon involving over 7,000 towns and cities across the world. Lighting on Civic Buildings and Structures are switched off all over the world.

As well people are encouraged to participate by turning off their lights at home for sixty minutes to show their support in creating a sustainable world.

In a demonstration of environmental commitment beyond the sixty minute power out, the Lincoln Envirotown Trust (LET) have been making huge efforts to raise awareness about Earth hour and climate change via various events to coincide with March 19th.

The Kim Hill discussion forum will examine an important environmental topic with a panel of experts. This year the topic is: ”Extinction - which species should we save”. The panel discussion is always a thoughtprovoking and entertaining event in which questions are also taken from the audience.

There will be a mobile brewery on site where attendees can try free samples of a new beer brewed specially for this event

The beer is aptly called ”Dead as a Dodo – Special Brew!”

LED have also organised skywatching in West Melton, Awards for the Selwyn Earth Hour Video Competition - which will be hosted by the Mayor and the locally celebrated Lincoln “Barn Dance”. The dance has proven to be a popular community event in past years.

T here prom is es to be candlelight and unplugged music which not only supports Earth Hour but creates a magical atmosphere for party goers. This year the dance is to take the form of a Scottish Ceilidh (traditional Gaelic social gathering) with music provided by the Southern Celtic Fiddle Orchestra.

With 2015 being the Earth’s hottest year on record, there is no longer any doubt that the consumption of all things, but especially power, has had a direct effect on Carbon Emissions and is responsible for the rise in temperature. It makes Earth Hour, which is aimed at encouraging the focus on power use a symbolic gesture of growing importance.

After thirty three years in its current location, Gnomes Alpine Sports Darfield, announce the forthcoming opening of their brand new store, in time for the 2016 ski season.

Gnomes are committed to retaining their presence in Darfield and so in May 2016 their new store, only 400 metres from their current one and at 26 South Terrace, opposite the Z service station, will open.

After twelve months of careful and extensive planning the purpose built development, now under construction, has been designed and modified to Gnomes’ specification and on completion will be 50% larger than the current shop. This makes it the biggest ski specific store and rental centre in Canterbury, and a central hub for skiers.

Gnomes are merging their current two outlets (Darfield and Yaldhurst) in the new flagship premises at the new location. By merging the two stores Gnomes can offer an even higher level of service, lower rental prices and faster processing times, while always retaining quality rental equipment. The new rental centre will be able to cater for the hire requirements of large groups, such as corporate or schools.

Darfield is on the fastest route to all Canterbury ski areas from Christchurch and the last chance to make the final decision on which direction to take. Highway 73 heads to Porters Ski area, as well as the

A new arts directory is now available for Selwyn residents.

The Selwyn Arts Directory, the first of its kind, is the result of a collaborative effort between the Selwyn Arts Trust and Selwyn District Council and provides a comprehensive list of over 120 artists, arts groups, arts tutors and art galleries across the Selwyn district.

Creative New Zealand’s Creative Communities Scheme funded the production of the directory.

Selwyn District Council Arts Coordinator Rachael Inch said the art directory brings together the visual arts, music, dance, literature, performance, venues and arts organisations from around the district.

“Whether you are looking for tuition for yourself or your child, needing to learn a wedding dance, looking for galleries to visit, or wanting to commission a piece of art for your home / business, it’s all in the directory,” she said.

WHITE TAIL SPIDERS The white tail spider is an Australian invader which originates from Sydney. They are par al to warm condi ons and are commonly found in furniture, ceiling spaces, bedding and amongst clothing.

The predatory arachnids are loners and hunt in a similar way to a wolf, The Fleet footed spider is often mistaken for a white tail. they are nocturnal and tend to hunt and eat other spiders.

How to avoid bites: • Do not leave clothing on the floor • Keep sheets/duvets tucked in and not touching the floor • Refrain from squashing White tail Treatment: • If a white tail is found, the best way to kill it is to carefully catch it in a jar and pour boiling water over it. This will kill the spider and any eggs.

• Avoid squashing the spider Male white tail spiders: males as there is a possibility of have a more slender body. females releasing eggs which will hatch at a later date.

• Pest control is usually carried out annually; inside and outside of the home.

The treatment also takes care of flies, silverfish, carpet beetles and suchlike.

• While it would be nice to use natural pyrethrum, it is affected by oxygen and ultraviolet light which makes it an ineffec ve long-term op on.

The Malvern Sub Union Fives competition was completed on January 30th, at Darfield. West Melton was well represented in the semi-finals by having four teams qualify in the three divisions. In the Premier Division Ron McNicholl, McNicholl Bob Shorter, Shorter Jeff Mugford, Mugford Bill Paekau and Bob Burnett prevailed over Darfield 1 in the final. Unfortunately the three other teams, West Melton 4 in the Senior Division and West Melton 5 and 6 in the Senior Reserve Division were defeated

in the semi-finals.

On February 6th and 7th the Malvern Open Pairs was held, with West Melton players to the fore again. Four West Melton teams qualified for post section which was played on the second day. In the final West Melton’s Bob Burnett and Bill Paekau defeated Ross Sadler and Terry Butland, Butland also from West Melton. Another West Melton team, Jeff Mugford and Bob Shorter were placed third equal with Gavin Lea and Darren Scobie from Darfield.

The Malvern Ladies Singles Championship was held at Darfield on February 13th.

Congratulations to Barbara Herrick and Ali Gardiner from West Melton who were runnersup and third placed, respectively. Ali also played for Country against Town on February 14th at West Melton, Country winning nine games to six.

Congratulations to Rosemary Pearson, Pearson Maggie Bailey, Bailey Lenore Armstrong and Joyce Walsh(s) Walsh who won the Ladies Club Championship Fours. The Year One and Two Ladies Singles Club Championship has also been completed with Rosemary Pearson winning this competition - well done.

Congratulations to Paul Williams who not only won the Men’s Colts Singles Club Championship, but also won the Men’s Junior Singles Club Championship as well.

On Fe bruar y 8 th the President’s Trophy was played.

This is an annual competition between teams made up from Club members and was won by Norm Dunlop, Dunlop Garry Cate, Cate Keith McMeeking and David Gooch (s). The Spud in a Bucket competition was also held on this day and out of thirty entries Keith McMeeking took the top honours with a whopping 4.2 kgs. A barbecue completed a very pleasant day.

Social Bowls had an excellent start to the season on February 11th with a full green and a perfect night. The Crackerjacks came out on top, but all teams posted good scores so the competition will definitely be interesting over the coming weeks.

Courses aimed at helping mature drivers gain skills to be safer on the road are being offered to Selwyn residents between February and April.

As in other areas of New Zealand, the number of Selwyn motorists over the age of sixty is expected to increase in the future.

Selwyn District Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commented that these courses are a fun and easy way for residents over the age of sixty to refresh their

skills and look at alternatives to driving. "We are really pleased to be able to offer these free courses and workshops with support from Age Concern and our volunteers. All of these activities have proven very popular and valuable in assisting people to continue to drive safely on our roads."

Selwyn District Council and Age Concern offer the Confident Driving Course to help older drivers remain confident on the road and encourage an increased

awareness of the traffic environment and other road users. It is designed to be thought provoking, informative, enjoyable and informal. There are no tests or exams and participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Morning tea and lunch is provided and bookings are requested.

Confident Driving Course courses will be held at Lincoln (March 22nd) and Leeston (April 19th) and are available free to Selwyn residents.
