The year is about finished and what a year we have had at the Men’s Shed. We are really making progress with our woodworking shed (now complete) and our meeting room (all enclosed). The kitchen and toilets are almost finished, so all is looking great. The latest edition is our engineering shed and that should be erected before Christmas. We have also had a spend up on equipment for the woodworking department, thanks to a grant from Infinity Foundation. An excellent result and much appreciated. The contract for the driveways and landscaping is due to be awarded within the next week, so that will see the grounds tidied up and looking complete. We will celebrate a wonderful year at our Christmas Party on December 6th with a BBQ to be held at one of our member’s homes. A very big thank you to

During the Responsible Business Awards last year a local Izone business owner, Alan Peacock of Independent Signs, along with the Lincoln Envirotown Trust, discussed the funding for putting fruit trees into every Primary School in Selwyn. Alan saw it as a community initiative aimed at healthy food for children, as well as encouraging Environmental Sustainability. While Alan canvassed local businesses for support, Lincoln Envirotown liaised with all the schools as to their requests and plans. Recently the planning stage of the project was complete and trees were delivered to, and planted at, the first six schools to participate in the scheme. Weedons School was the first to receive their plants and Sarah Walters, Deputy Mayor of Selwyn helped the School’s Enviro Club students plant the first tree. Rolleston and Clearview Primary School had theirs delivered and planted fairly soon afterwards. Rolleston Landscaping firm “The Outdoor Space” (Vicky Vicky and Aaron Bartlett) Bartlett voluntarily gave many hours of their time to ensuring that each school’s plans were feasible and they sourced and continue to source, the plants. They will also provide ongoing help with maintenance

Judging by the initial enthusiasm of the schools, it’s expected that well over 150 trees could go into schools this year. and potentially around 1,000 trees could well be planted during the next five years.

A delighted Aurelia Wilberforce receiving her Award for Best Junior Concept at the Bright Spark Awards.
Aurelia Wilberforce, from Lincoln High School was the delighted winner of the Best Junior Concept category at the Bright Spark Awards, held in Auckland on October 29th. Aurelia’s winning idea was called ‘Wakey Wakey’ and is a psycho alarm clock, unable to be silenced until it is sure the owner is fully awake! Many can relate to an incident involving an alarm clock blunder; not hearing an alarm, or hearing it and hitting snooze, or even just turning it off altogether only to fall back to sleep and wake an hour later in a panic. All these scenarios can lead to a person being at work or school and still feeling half asleep, as well as late! This is what inspired Aurelia to create her award winning app. “I created it because one day I was running late for school, had a math's test first up and felt half asleep, so I was thinking about how I could fix this and create something to wake me up properly and more efficiently. I decided to create something which had a horrible sound that would actually wake you up as I quite often find myself
sleeping through normal alarms. An approaching science fair prompted me to actually create the concept and when a teacher informed me about the Bright Sparks competition it was a chance to enter it as well. I did all the programming myself.” explained Aurelia. Her alarm is one that cannot be ignored! It features the ten most annoying sounds in the world, according to science, polls and Aurelia’s ear, and it cannot be turned off until the owner has completed a task designed to involve all parts of the brain, making sure that the owner is fully awake before being able to shut down the alarm. Although the project has been a huge success for Aurelia, It has not been allplain sailing though. She has struggled through varying methods and protocols, coding, crashing and dyslexia made the task more challenging too, “I struggle with reading, because I’m dyslexic, which means very scientifically written info is near impossible to read and understand. I eventually got around this by creating flowcharts which planned
exactly how I would do it .” Aurelia was delighted to receive recognition for her creation at the Bright Sparks awards. Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, the Bright Sparks competition was launched to encourage and connect students with an interest in technology, who will be the nation’s future engineers, electricians and programmers. Entrants walked away with a combined prize pool worth $10,000 and unrivalled exposure in the technology industry.

Selwyn’s first Diwali Celebration was held on Saturday, October 31st on the Green behind the Lincoln Library. Diwali (or Deepavali, the ‘festival of lights’) is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated each year, in the Northern Hemisphere autumn, which is New Zealand’s spring. To say the Lincoln event was an outstanding success is probably an understatement. The inaugural celebration
attracted an attendance of over 1,000 people, with more than 400 attending the craft sessions in the specially openfor-the-event, Library. The Diwali Celebration was organised by the Selwyn District Council in collaboration with Surinder and Archna Tandon on behalf of Colours of India NZ, The Laboratory, Selwyn Arts Trust, and Selwyn Libraries.

The Selwyn Food and Wine Trail took ‘Selwyn to Town’ for three days, and attended the Christchurch A & P Show last weekend. Not just an appearance though, the exhibit was judged the Best Outdoor Site - Medium Exhibitor. The site, designed by Cressy Lane, featured a pergola area so people could sit and relax, along with four custom built
tasting areas where visitors could chat with knowledgeable and passionate Selwyn Food and Wine Trail members. The site also contained a retail area featuring a selection of fantastic Selwyn Food and Wine Trail products. Over the three days visitors experienced Emilio’s cheese, wine from True & Daring, Ngapuarata and Braided River, delicious dressings and
crackers from Langdale Vineyard Restaurant, natural fruit drinks from Aroha and a tasty array of treats from Gunyah Country Estate. The aim of the event was to promote Selwyn District by providing an enticing taster and encourage visitors to the District. It was a great success for all involved and definitely achieved its goal outstandingly.

At their inaugural attendance of the Synchronised Swimming National Championships, held in Dunedin recently, five girls from the Weedons based, Small Strokes Synchro Club returned home with some pleasing results. The event was attended by 97 swimmers from New Zealand, Russia and New Caledonia, with the four days of competition being fiercely contested. On November 4th and 5th, students from Rolleston School performed their latest production, entitled ‘Twisted Tales’. It was comprised of six plays based on Roald Dahl’s Dahl’ comical collection of ‘Revolting Rhymes’. The rhymes are parodies of traditional folk tales in verse and a re-interpretation of six well-known fairy tales, featuring surprise endings in place of the traditional happilyever-after. The plays included by students were Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Goldilocks and The Three Little Pigs. Each play was performed by one Year 7 or 8 class and combined into a full production. All students from Years 7 and 8 were involved in the production in some way, either performing, stage management, props or various behind the scenes roles. There was plenty of opportunity for crowd participation, as each play included classic pantomime fun. Year 7 Teacher Keri Dekkers commented, “this was an excellent production which focussed on entertaining the audience with quick wit
and loveable characters. It was great to see so many students involved and see the talent we have being displayed on stage. “The whole school and
spectators were thoroughly entertained and are looking forward to the next production already!”

The Clearview Choir getting a feel for the huge venue before their performance. On Thursday, October 29th, the Clearview Senior Choir joined 4,000 other pupils from Christchurch schools to sing at the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival. The 76th annual event was held at Horncastle Arena and featured a “Ring of Fire!” theme. The theme was chosen to reflect New Zealand’s position on the giant fault line that rings the Pacific Ocean. This year’s song list was inspired by countries that border this group of faults and volcanoes stretching up from Antarctica, through to Russia and the Philippines. Erin Sutherland and Jayne Clark, Clark both teachers at Clearview, worked with the senior choir to prepare them for the festival. “The choir have been practising each week for the past three terms to prepare for the Festival. Each member of the choir loved the opportunity to take part and all are keen to return next year, with some hoping to audition for the special choir," Erin concluded.

Oliver Lonsdale from Rolleston School is not only a creative young man, but has bagged himself A Chromebook laptop and Nexus tablet by winning the Google Doodle competition. As can be seen from the photo, he is understandably delighted with his prize! Oliver also won a staggering $10,000 worth of technology for the School, as well as ten Nexus tablets, for being a National Year Group winner. His design was selected out of more than 7,000 entries from across the country! Oliver’s doodle will be featured on google.co.nz early next year. A spokesperson from the school expressed their gratitude to Oliver, “thanks Oliver, we’re very proud of you and we appreciate what you have done for Rolleston School.”

On October 25th, West Melton Bowling Club challenged Kirwee Bowling Club at West Melton for the Le Compte Cup. This is an annual event and is well supported by members from both Clubs. West Melton was just too strong on the day and won the cup by twelve games to three with one game drawn. Country played Town on November 8th and players selected for Country from West Melton included Bob Burnett (Senior Men’s), Bob Shorter (Development Men’s), Mike Burke (Development Men’s), Gretta Leigh (Senior Ladies) and Ali Gardiner (Development Ladies). Congratulations to these players. Congratulations again to Bob Burnett who gained selection for Canterbury after his fine form for Country. It is a real honour for the Club having a player of Bob’s calibre as a member. The ladies are currently playing their Club pairs and are also involved in the Rowntree Cup which is a Centre Competition. Playing numbers have been boosted with the addition of three new members. A warm welcome to Karen Abbot, Abbot Sharen McCartin and Bronnie Clark to the West Melton Bowling Club. Social Bowls will start on February 11th. This is a competition for non-bowlers and now is a good opportunity to get teams organised and entries in (by the end of January) before games begin.
