On Friday, October 30th, Lincoln Envirotown held their Rolleston Responsible Business Awards presentation in recognition of businesses’ contributions to environmentally sustainable business practices. Businesses have been performing so well in these assessments that new categories appear to be required each year! Initially starting with Bronze, Silver, and Gold; a Platinum challenge was added in 2009, while this year a new Diamond Category was introduced. This new category celebrated the community leadership of the business. Amazingly, six out of 56 Rolleston businesses were awarded Diamond placings this year and such was the level of entries, that all achieved Silver or above, with six reaching Platinum level. The Diamond Award winners were; Garden View B and B, Independent Signs, Kiwi Flora
Nurseries, New World Supermarket, New Zealand Vegetable Oil, and Selwyn Aquatic Centre. Sarah Walters, Walters Deputy Mayor of Selwyn, presented the certificates and Lloyd Bathurst of Rolleston Square Ltd presented the Trophy. The worthy winner of which, was Kiwiflora Nurseries. Richard Hurt of Kiwiflora u r g e d b u s in e s s e s to implement recommendations made by assessors, during the award process, explaining that it was by doing this that had brought them to this level. Sam Rowlands, Rowlands the new Lincoln Envirotown Chair, thanked sponsors and supporters and made mention of the continued financial support by SDC. Guest Speaker, Matt Stanford of Enviroschools Canterbury, spoke of the importance of children discovering their environmental responsibilities for themselves. He cited
Lincoln Envirotown’s recent initiative of joining with businesses to bring fruit trees into schools, pointing out how children had been encouraged to be part of the planning process. This enjoyable occasion again gave Lincoln Envirotown Trust
the chance to celebrate and recognise local businesses’ c o n tr ibu tio n to go od environmental practices. In fact they were left wondering how they could possibly present new challenges to some of the already highly sustainable businesses.
