Alternative four-piece band, Altero from Lincoln High School, was named this year’s Canterbury winner of Smokefreerockquest at the Isaac Theatre Royal on June 26th, in front of an appreciative crowd of over three hundred. The members of Altero are Miceál Wilson (lead guitar), Jared Whiting (bass), Bede Barrie (drums) and Min Her (lead vocals). Min said the three guys have been together for several years, but that she had only joined the band a few months ago. “It was an interesting experience being able to craft music, despite not being together for long,” she said. “We don’t plan our music that much - I write the lyrics and they are very much related to my life experiences,” she added. Top results were as follows: • Band 1st place: Altero from Lincoln High School • Band 2nd place: Forlorn Bloom from Hagley Community College • Band 3rd place: The Therapy, Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery • Solo/Duo 1st place: Neil MacLeod, St Andrew’s College • Solo/Duo 2nd place: Ashy Batchelor, St Margaret’s College The two top placing bands and solo/duo acts win musical gear from associate sponsors NZ Rockshops, and the opportunity to gain selection for the national final in Auckland on September 11th. Smokefreerockquest Founder and director Glenn Common feels there are more bands than ever before reaching the high standard required from national finalists. “This means that real
