Although I cannot claim fame to being an All Black or playing for Canterbury, my rugby pedigree extends back some forty seven years. As a young boy starting out for West Melton in their foundation year, moving north to play schoolboy rugby in Kaikoura, south again to play for Lincoln College, abroad to play for Ledbury (England) and home again to play for Glenmark. At the age of thirty two, I limped off the field as a player for the last time and picked up the whistle as a referee in North Canterbury. My first game was a friendly senior match in 1998, in Glenmark and from that moment I was hooked, having been an active member of the Canterbury Rugby Referees Association (CRRA) ever since. Having refereed at the senior level for over eighteen years, I clocked up my 150th Division 1 competition match, on May 15th and my 200th senior match in 2018. It was an honour to tick off my 150th Division 1 match at West Melton, having started playing rugby there as a youngster a lifetime ago. The
presentation of the West Melton and Canterbury Rugby Referees Jerseys, commemorating my 150th game between West Melton and Hampstead was a real privilege. Having my family, including my Dad and grandson at the game was a real treat, as they have all played a big part in supporting me from the sideline over past twenty three years of whistle blowing. I have been fortunate to referee two Ellesmere Division 1 finals, numerous age group finals and was the recipient of the Ellesmere Rugby Sub Union BNZ Trophy for Rugby Personality of the Year, the Ray Henderson Trophy for Rugby Referee Personality of the Year and Ellesmere Rugby Referees Number One Referee, in 2013. As a member of the CRRA, I have been fortunate to referee across the country as part of the inter-change programme. I was selected in 2005, to travel with the Christchurch Old Boys Rugby Team to Argentina, to officiate in the Copa Patagonia Rugby Tournament, involving club sides from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Argentina. As a result of my

Marty Gameson being presented with his Jersey from Daryl Sullivan, from the Ellesmere Rugby Referees Association. performance at this tournament, I was selected to referee the final between the Glenwood Falcons (South Africa) and Sociedad Sportiva (Argentina). In my spare time, I held the position of Convener of the Ellesmere Rugby Referees for four years and Chairman of the CRRA for a further four years, standing down at the end of 2016, after completing my four year tenure. Although I haven’t reached the international or representative heights, that I thought I might
as a referee, I am still proud of the achievements I have ticked off along the way as a grassroots referee. The goals I set myself around numbers of games, the adrenalin fix I get each week from running around the field and my dogged determination to be a successful old man in a young man’s game, still motivates me to pull my boots on each Saturday. Roll on 300 games! Marty Gameson.
