Sharon and Andy Howard of Shandy’s products, an oyster mushroom and sauce business, based in Sheffield, came up with their combined name, as they both contribute to their exciting new venture as a team. The Howard’s moved to Sheffield seven years ago when
they left the dairy industry, but are still currently running a calf rearing operation from their lifestyle block, which is quite labour intensive. The beef market plummeted last year due to Covid, so the duo decided they needed to come up with a new venture that would suit them

shell. Sharon loves chatting about the growing process, which starts with layering sterilised straw and spores in the bags and placing them in the incubating room, which is warm and dark, for approximately seventeen days. Bags are then moved to a fruiting room, which has light, fresh air and humidity, for about five to six days, allowing the delicious oyster mushrooms to bloom. The sauces are proving to be extremely popular, being both gluten and vegan free.
both, as well as their selfsufficient lifestyle. They now attend markets and shows with their mushrooms and sauces, which can also be found at Oxford and Leeston Butcheries. You can also find the mushrooms on the menu at the Sheffield Hotel who use their delicious mushrooms in some of their dishes. Last winter Sharon completed an online mushroom growing course, based in the United Kingdom and she is now able to put what she learnt into practise. Shandy’s native oyster mushrooms, have more flavour, protein, vitamins and minerals, they are basically a super food. These mushrooms are also quite fleshy meaning they hold together better during cooking, so help bulk up meals well and have the added bonus of being gluten free and vegan friendly. Oyster mushrooms don’t taste anything like the shellfish, they actually get their name due to looking like an oyster
For those that are keen to find out more about Shandy’s products, visit their Facebook page: ‘Shandy’s’ or feel free to chat to them at the markets.
