St John Darfield is looking for a local community group or organisation, who would be willing to take on a restoration challenge. The former St John ambulance station, on the corner of Currie Street and North Terrace, sits on a reserve that was gazetted to the St John Ambulance Association in 1969, for use as a site for their headquarters. At the same time, the St John Malvern sub centre purchased the former Malvern County Council building on the site for $5,000. The building was built in 1912 and had come up for sale in 1969. The premises has been closed since the devastating Canterbury earthquake sequence, since September

2010, as the former station was substantially damaged during the earthquakes and needs extensive repairs. St John was able to build a new station

in Bray Street, via insurance proceeds and fundraising. However, the former station has remained with the organisation, but been closed for ten years. An application has been made to have the building listed as a heritage building; this is currently under consideration as part of the Selwyn District Council’s draft plan. St John is not in a position to afford such renovation work,

as requirements have now changed, they need to divest themselves of this building and land. They are looking to work with a communityfocused group or individual, interested in taking on a restoration project. “As an organisation we are happy to discuss transferring ownership of the building to a group or individual,” commented a spokesperson for St John Darfield.

If any interested community group or member of the community would like to discuss this unique opportunity further, please contact Ann Shepherd on 03 318 4774 or 027 226 2936.
