Saturday, July 3rd saw the Christchurch to Greymouth TranzAlpine train service resume after it ceased due to Covid-19. The train ride gives travellers the opportunity to experience the South Island’s striking natural landscape, while making their way between the East and West Coasts. Throughout the journey passengers get to see epic vistas, travel the edges of the ice-fed Waimakariri River, traverse the Southern Alps, and see miles of native beech forest. The TranzAlpine is one of the world's great train journeys covering 223 kilometres (139 miles) one-way, taking just under five hours. sell out with over three hundred very enthusiastic passengers onboard. The train was full, largely due to a currently running price special offering heavily reduced fares. Springfield locals welcomed the return of the TranzAlpine; the Station was decorated with signs and balloons and the tubs of flowers had been watered. Around thirty Springfield residents turned up at the Station to welcome the train and its passengers, while a group of locals were eagerly waiting to board, for their trip to Greymouth. Greymouth also warmly welcomed the train that brought excited visitors. Many that disembarked on the Coast were hiring cars to continue their exploration. It’s hoped the return of the train will assist businesses along the line, as well as on the Coast.
