A new award at this year’s Courtenay A & P Show was donated by the Malvern Material Girls in memory of the late Sharon Kellock who was a huge part of the Show family. Nine year old Lily Smith won the award by being recognised as the ‘People’s Choice’ in the quilt section at the Show. Lily explained that she wanted to start sewing because the old quilt that her Ma (Grandmother) made her when she was four was now a little babyish, and she was interested in sewing her own, now she was older. It took Lily a couple of days to collect all her material, choosing different shades of her favourite colour, purple. She then added some yellows to help lighten it followed by a week to iron, cut and sew all
the squares. Once she had completed the sewing she took her quilt to Bron Hamilton in Darfield to assist with choosing the backing material. “I had to look through a large folder for a pattern to go on my quilt and chose the ‘Flight of Fancy’ pattern, and purple thread, of course,” Lily explained. Bron showed Lily how to bind her quilt and in the last school holidays Lily and her Ma finished the binding, and sewed on a label. The quilt took Lily eight days to make over a four month period and she’s understandably very proud of the result. “It’s a grown-up queen-size quilt and I am also looking forward to making other things with Ma’s help too,” Lily concluded.
