top honours. Riley and his large white boar ‘Prince of Bel Air’ (Princey) were entered in the commercial boar class, bacon section. “This means ‘Prince of Bel Air’ needs to be a nice, long pig in length, with great muscle tone and a not too fat a bottom,” Riley and Tim explained. “The other pig section is pork and these pigs are shorter being designed more for chops, rather than hams and bacon,” the pair added. Riley went on to say that a nice muscled bottom comes from great feeding, “as you can’t really exercise your pig”. “‘Prince of Bel Air’ has a very good diet,” Tim and Riley said, “it’s made up of a mixture of grain, pig pellets and milk which all help to keep him in top shape.” Apart from monitoring the great feeding regime Riley also has to prepare the trailer for transport
to Shows with sawdust, so that Princey is nice and comfortable for the journey. Once they arrive at their destination the all important task of washing and making sure Princey looks fabulous, starts. After Princey is washed and clean, Riley applies baby oil to the boar’s skin to make him shiny and ready for judging. Eyeing up his Show rivals Riley considered he might be in with a chance of doing okay as Princey had some of the best muscle tone on display. During prize giving Tim was called up for second prize and Riley then dared to hope he may have swung a first placing. Then ‘Prince of Bel Air’ was called out, and an excited Riley high-fived his dad before heading up to receive his first prize. Riley and ‘Prince of Bel Air’ took the overall Bacon Champion of the Show,
Riley proudly holding the tray and wearing the Champion sash he and ‘Prince of Bel Air’ won at the Ellesmere A & P Show. an outstanding achievement for Riley’s first attempt, proving dedication and hard-work pays off.
