A very high standard of artwork is on exhibit at Darfield’s Recreation Centre until Sunday, October 20th. The coveted Orion Premier Award went to Darfield resident SoonSoon-Lee Sp icer for her l inocut ‘Chrysanthemum and Quinces’. Judge Fiona Simpson praised it as an, “exquisitely rendered still -life…reminiscent of traditional Japanese woodcuts”. Soon-Lee commented: “to win this award is an incredible encouragement to my art, and hopefully all artists here. Thank you to Orion, to the organisers, volunteers, and supporters of Darfield Artweek, and to this community who has been so encouraging and positive about my work.” David Atkinson’s Atkinson ‘Jar’ won the MCAC Friends’ Award combining its, “subtle colouring, significant form and striking salt glaze to create a very elegant sculptural work”. Auckland artist, Gavin Chai received the Darfield Dental Award for his, “small yet sophisticated work that draws the viewer in with subtle colours and a strong composition”. Last year’s Premier Award winner,
Soon-Lee Spicer and her ‘Chrysanthemum and Quinces,’ art which won the coveted Orion Premier Award at Darfield’s Artweek. Henry Turner, Turner received the Local Businesses Award for his watercolour, ‘Yellow Arches’. The Survus Consultants Award went to Ashburton artist Steve James for his ‘Spring Snow’, an oil painting, “in the tradition of Canterbury landscape painters such as Archibald Nicoll and AA Deans”. Deans Other award winners include Darfield resident Jan Mitchell, Mitchell West Melton artist Helen Stevenson, Stevenson Christchurch artist Philip Beadle, Beadle and Tai Tapu printmaker/photographer

Amy Adams, Adams MP for Selwyn, officially opened Darfield Artweek for an appreciative crowd of approximately 150 artists and friends of the Malvern Community Arts Council on Friday, October 11th who then had first viewing of the 298 exhibits, by 138 artists. Darfield Artweek is open at the Darfield Recreation Centre and the Selwyn Gallery till Sunday, October 20th. Admission is free, allowing everyone to visit and appreciate the breadth of artistic talent that Artweek attracts.
Entitled ‘A Splash of Yellow,’ painted by Darfield artist Jan Mitchell, was also an award winner.
