Sheffield/Annat sheep farmer and now world champion cyclist Gary Ferguson took on the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships in Poznan, Poland, competing in the 70+ class (he’s not yet, but met the date criteria). The Championships were held from August 29th to September 1st and Gary has returned to N ew Zeal and a World Champion. The event saw nearly two thousand riders from forty six countries vying for the UCI World Champion’s rainbow jersey in their respective age groups. Age groups for both the individual time trial (ITT) and the road race ranged from 19-up to 74 years for women and up to 84 years for men. Gary already a multi sport champion, switched to solely cycling ten years ago. He enjoys time trial as the varying set-off intervals mean riders are pretty much out on their own competing. Gary trains for six hours a week which usually comprises a three hour bike ride at the weekend and some further training midweek also. “Through the winter I trained in the comfort of the lounge, listening to music, on my stationary bike,” Gary reported with a smile. Having a good base fitness from sheep farming and hard

work in all weathers gives Gary an edge that others in his class have to recreate with more extensive training. Gary laughed as he said New Zealand Beef and Lamb help to keep him on track with his training, commenting that if people fuelled their bodies well, they could handle just about anything. Gary also puts some of his success down to being able to handle all types of tough situations, something he’s faced on numerous occasions throughout the years while farming. Dealing with droughts, large snow dumps, winds and everything life can throw at a farmer living in the country certainly gives a competitor stamina to deal with anything an event can present them with. Gary’s wife Pat travelled to Europe with him as his manager, maintenance and of course, “my biggest support person.” To qualify for the World competition Gary had to have already won a New Zealand title, which he had. “You never know if, or how good you are, till you compete in an European competition,” Gary commented. “The time trial itself was a twisty course and riders never knew what to expect, as road surface, wind and course design, all factor in the final performance.”

Above: Gary Ferguson out training for his time trial events. Gary pushed himself and knew when he needed to take the pressure off a little, and when to put it back on, resulting in him finishing the race in a world championship time of 26 minutes (for over 18.4 kilometres). Gary commented that only through training and knowing yourself can you learn when to push and when to pull back a little. Gary plans, all going well to head back again next year to compete, and as a world champ, his entry fee is waived. “The Gran Fondo World Championships represent a major objective for athletes who come from all over the world to measure up against like-minded cyclists,” said David Lappartient, Lappartient UCI President. “All in their bid to win the prestigious rainbow jersey. reserved for the UCI Gran Fondo World Champions.”

Participants qualified for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships at one of the twenty two qualifier events held around the world between September 2018 and July 2019.
