Around three hundred people, including forty Frews, gathered at Frew’s Transport, Darfield yard last Saturday (June 15th) to celebrate the launch of ‘Frews Journey - Towards a Century’. This is Evan Frew’s story of the Frew’s Transport company since 1921 when his grandfather, Edgar Frew, Frew bought a half share in a Greendale cartage company powered by a traction engine. Merv Frew welcomed guests and the senior Frew brothers gave speeches outlining some of the history of the Company. These were followed by Elaine Smith (nee Frew) who paid tribute to the Frew women, without whose input, especially in the early years, the Company would never have survived. Evan told briefly how the book came to be written. It started as a record for his children and grandchildren but, as he collected information, he came to realise that it might have more general appeal and so the idea of writing and publishing an actual book was born. Hence, it

Edgar Frew’s original traction engine with L to R: Chaz, Hamish, Merv, Owen, Evan and Dean Frew. is not just a family history; it covers how things were done in ‘the old days’ and the many changes in the local transport and farming scene in nearly one hundred years. Changes in hay carting, fertiliser spreading, grain cartage, demolition etc are all mentioned in the book. Evan found that writing a book turned out to be a much longer and more complex process than he had imagined. He paid tribute to the many folk who had helped him along the way,

during the past five years or so. He described Saturday’s book launch as a very satisfying day. Tribute was paid to three long serving staff members - Ian Thomas, Thomas Barry Taylor and Neil Walker - who were presented with Books to mark their collective 135 years of service to the Company (or companies bought by Frews). The Frew

family also thanked their many loyal clients without whom no company can survive. Speeches were followed by a very welcome hot drink and morning tea and the opportunity to catch -up with old acquaintances, buy a book, or check out the fantastic display of trucks and gear around the yard.
