By Lucinda Jarvis. Cricket has always been in the blood for Darfield local Jesse Frew, Frew so it is no real surprise that he was recently selected for the New Zealand Under 19 Team. They will head to Bangladesh in April this year to play their first bilateral series against these opponents. This will be the first series in the lead up to the 2020 Under 19 World Cup, which will be played in South Africa next year. This tour will see the Team play one warm up fifty over match followed by five fifty over internationals against the Bangladesh Under 19 team. Cricket is very much apart of this family with Jesse’s dad Rob Frew playing for Canterbury from 1995 - 2003. Jesse’s mum Lisa Astle also has a sterling cricketing background, having played for both the Canterbury and New Zealand Women’s teams, as well as being the sister of ex Black Cap Nathan Astle. Jesse picked up cricket as a sport from the early age of four, where he continued playing junior cricket for the Darfield Cricket Club before going on, at Year 9, to play for the Selwyn Districts team which had boys predominantly from Darfield High School in it. In 2016 he moved

to St Andrew’s College and is in his third season representing the first XI. Two other Canterbury Country cricketers have also made the Team, Rhys Mariu (St Andrews College and Rangiora Cricket Club) and Angus Sidey (Christchurch Boys High school and Cheviot Cricket Club). “The boys have a busy six weeks ahead of them with additional trainings scheduled and individual fitness and cricket specific targets to meet,” commented Rob. “Touring and playing cricket in Bangladesh will be an eye opening experience, from both a sporting and cultural perspective. The boys will also gain a valuable insight into how international teams prepare and the varying conditions they encounter, and no doubt they will face some challenging situations on and off the field,” concluded Rob. The New Zealand Under 19 team is lucky to have former test batsman Peter Fulton as their coach with Adam Miles and Dion Ebrahim as the assistant coaches. These two teams have only met in World Cups to date which is four times in total and both teams have won and lost two games. The team will not be naming their captain until the squad arrives in Bangladesh with the intention of sharing the responsibility among several players.

Jesse Frew has been selected for the New Zealand Under 19 Team.
