The 2018 Boys and Girls Agricultural (Ag) Day took place on Thursday, November 22nd on the Cattle Lawn at the Canterbury A&P grounds in Christchurch. This is an opportunity for students to compete in livestock judging, similar to what they would experience at an A&P show. Lambs, Poultry, Goats and Pigs were the animals able to be shown this year. Hororata Primary School year four student Sam Smith competed in this competition with his lamb, ‘Blackie’, a healthy Suffolk cross twin lamb that was unwanted by his mum. When Blackie was born he was four and a half kilograms and has been a very healthy lamb right through. Blackie’s name came from him having a very

look after their pet along with information about their pet and its breed. These books are submitted prior to the competition day so judges can mark them. Care and Attention is another very important section, students are judged on the look and overall condition of their animal. The students are asked lots of question relating to the rearing of their animal and specific questions about their animals breed and health. Leading and Handling is the last section students are judged on and this can be a very tricky section to judge as animals sometimes have minds of their own on the day.

Blackie impressed the judges and were placed in all three sections of this competition and went on to win Reserve Champion Junior lamb. There was a lot of pet lambs this year because there was no pet calves attending this competition due to Mycoplasma Bovis. To qualify for this championship event, entrants had to have attended a school pet day within their region. Students are judged across three sections. By Lucinda Jarvis. The Thompson Family are a local family based in Kirwee that shares a love and passion for equestrian sport. Mum Lisa, Lisa Dad Andy and their four girls, Chris, Chris Maddi, Maddi George and Gus all ride and these girls started their riding careers not long after they could walk. The Thompson Family enjoy all aspects of equestrian sport from Pony Club, Round the Ring, One Day Eventing, Hunting, Show Hunter, Hacking, Mustering and their true passion Show Jumping. The passion and commitment this family have for the equestrian sport is a true family affair, with everyone involved in some way or another with the horses. The Thompson’s also run camps for children which are thoroughly enjoyed by those who attend these fun action packed camps, the children that attend these camps love spending time with like minded people, who share the love for of horses. Maddie started her equestrian

business at the age of fifteen with giving the odd lesson and having the odd horse come in for schooling, she now does horses full time and bases her business from the family property in Kirwee. She has also spent six months overseas in Europe working and gaining experience competing at international shows and gaining valuable equestrian experience. George is now working at PGG Wrightson in Darfield, Chris lives in Tauranga while she is studying at radio school and Gus attends Darfield High School and is wanting to follow her equestrian passion by becoming a horse chiropractor. This family attended the Canterbury A & P Show from November, 14th-16th with a team of seven horses, all displaying great results and all seven horses coming home with a ribbon. The Thompson sisters are also well known for their great hunter successes. This year was no different with Gus winning the prestigious Renown

Page 3

Challenge Cup and also winning Reserve Champion. The Renown Challenge Cup is open to hunt members who have hunted at least three times in the current season, it is a hunter jumping course of walls, brushes, wire fences and a variety of other fences. This competition is not about speed but style, type of horse and manners. Maddi won the working hunter class and George placed fourth in the heavy weight round the ring hunter class. At the show there was a horse that was made out of old horse shoes that wore dress rugs that were won by many of the winners of certain classes that was made by Andy, this was admired and commented on by many show goers about how fabulous it looked. This amazing piece of artwork took Andy three weeks to make and was part of Andy’s rehab as he lost his leg not that long ago.

CentreStage Rolleston has just wrapped up their debut season of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and they couldn’t be happier. The show was attended by 1,600 people from in and around the Selwyn District and the Executive Team say they will now focus on their next show, Peter Pan, which will be on stage in July 2019.

The cast of eighty was joined by a band and production crew that saw over 120 people involved in staging the Show. Performed at the Rolleston Primary School, viewers really felt part of the production with the unique Hall layout allowing the audience to see all facets of the Show. CentreStage had a vision of bringing a community together to share in the love of

performing arts and they certainly felt they achieved that. They are now convinced they will be able to build on this success and continue.

Nick Stoneman and Jenna Crothers, Crothers the Bus Go Canterbury Team can’t stress strongly enough how important it is for readers to have their say, if a bus service from Darfield to Christchurch (with stops in between) is to become a possibility. “It's important as many people as possible know about the online consultation,” Nick and Jenna said, “as that often is one of the loudest complaints after it's closed. We’ve heard folk say; ‘oh we didn't know’, plus it opens a whole world of options to access other parts of this great region we call home,” the pair added. Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council would like feedback on two proposed trial bus services: one between Darfield and Christchurch city, via Kirwee and West Melton, and the other between Leeston and Christchurch city, via Doyleston, Irwell and Springston. As part of its Long-Term Plan, Selwyn District Council has committed to funding one return bus service daily, from Monday-

Friday, on a trial basis from January to June 2019, as long as the community agrees there is a need for a daily commuter service and is prepared to support it. Environment Canterbury senior manager public transport Stewart Gibbon said: “We are asking for input from the community to assess if they would use such a service, as well as the times and pick up/ drop off locations for the trial services that would best meet their needs.” Selwyn District Council asset manager transportation Andrew Mazey added, “we understand these are growing communities and there is a need for improved connectivity to Christchurch for those living in Darfield and Leeston that

doesn’t just rely on using private motor vehicles. These routes will provide a number of people with an alternative way to connect to Christchurch for a range of purposes like education, health services and employment.” The trial services are intended to start from January 2019 for a six-month trial period. Brochures with feedback forms will be delivered to residents and will be available at both the Leeston and Darfield libraries and service centres. People can also complete the survey online at metroinfo.co.nz or go to Facebook and search for Bus Go Canterbury.

Sunday, November 25th was ‘The Trots at Mot Christmas Special’ race meeting. Despite the weather it was a great day of racing with twelve grass track races being held. The track was in great condition despite the wet weather lately. The weather did contribute to a lower than

average attendance but all that attended enjoyed a great day out with lots of fun and great racing. There were some good dividends paid on the TAB and it was great to see some young talented drivers having success on the course. Santa made a welcome appearance and

Wayne May, Banks Peninsula Trotting Club President with Santa (Maurice McDermott) at the recent Trots at Mot Christmas Special meeting.

The New Zealand Junior Rider Team that recently attended the Princess Cup at the Royal Horse Guard in Bangkok Thailand, have finished on the podium. These riders competed in show jumping rounds on borrowed horses, which can be a challenging task. Local rider Sophie Townsend and her team mates Sarah West and Ike Baker finished on five faults earning them a well deserved Bronze medal. Sophie and Sarah produced super clear rounds and Ike did a fantastic job on a difficult horse for five faults. Indonesia won Gold with three superb clear rounds, Silver went to Iran with four faults and our fantastic New Zealand team taking Bronze. This was reported to be a fantastic team with wonderful support from parents and friends. It was an experience that will not be forgotten by the riders and their support crew and many friendships were made. Photo is of the New Zealand team on the podium, looking very proud, (L-R) Sarah West, Ike Baker and Sophie Townsend.

Saturday, November 24th saw TM Dance World and the Malvern Ballet School hold their shared end of year dance recital. The event took place in Christchurch at St Margaret's College, ‘Charles Luney Auditorium’. With the two Schools combined there were approximately 150 Malvern dancers participating in the Show and a supportive audience of 450 attending. “A more professional venue allowed the dancers to perform on a fabulous size stage, along with impressive lights and sound,” said TM Dance World owner Tara Marshall. “Our Show entitled ‘Dreams Can Come True’ showcased items in Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Acrobatics and Contemporary Dance,” Tara reported, “and featured students ranging in age from three to twenty years old.” Hard work prior to the Show by all the dancers enabled them to present a polished and professional performance, wowing the audience. “All the dancers were excited to perform and to showcase all their hard work from the last term,” Tara explained. “Both TM Dance World and the Malvern Ballet wish to thank everyone who came along to support our Show,” she finished.

Braving the rain and with umbrellas at the ready, Left Courtenay A & P President Jane Jenkins and Right her sister Wendy Chamberlain (Senior Vice President), Centre Richard Westaway, (Junior Vice President).

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton gets to grips with the ‘Jaws of Life’ on the Kirwee Fire Brigade stand. The impressive stand was named winner of the ‘Most Outstanding Display’ at the Show.

When Saturday’s weather dawned wet and drizzly organisers and officials of the 143rd Courtenay A & P Show must have been extremely disappointed. While the weather certainly influenced numbers through the gate and caused some stallholders to cover or dismantle displays that were adversely affected by rain, there was lots to see and do for those that came along. “We've worked out that we had around 3,000 through the gate,” said Courtenay Show Secretary, Sharon Kellock. Kellock “It’s always hard to be exact as children sixteen and under have free entry, plus we give out a lot of free passes to entrants, sponsors, trade sites and local dignitaries,” she added. “Numbers were a bit down because of the weather, but we were very lucky that we only had one reasonable shower during the afternoon, despite forecasts of worse,” Sharon smiled. Show President, Jane Jenkins, Jenkins also expressed her delight at the numbers through the gates and was pleased that the weather kept itself relatively under control, with only one

major rain shower just prior to the grand parade. “The wet weather we received the week before the Show made conditions a bit soggy underfoot for the horses in the ring, but everyone coped admirably,” Jane said. “The Pet Lamb Class was really well supported again this year and attracted 53 entrants. The youngest, at just eighteen months old, waved at the crowd as she walked her lamb in the ring alongside her 81 year old Canadian Grandfather,” Jane reported. Nathan Langridge accepted the trophy for Best Trade Exhibit commenting, “on behalf of everyone at Darfield Mowers and Chainsaws I would like to thank our customers for their loyal support. The Show was wet for a while, but we’ve been coming here for the last three years and definitely look forward to returning next year.” T h e T r o p h y f or M o s t Outstanding display was won by the Kirwee Volunteer Fire Brigade and accepted by Chief Fire Officer, Stuart Jones. Jones “This is the fourth time we have won this award and we would like to

thank the community for their support and sponsorship of the Brigade.” Stuart also added a fire safety message to be taken on board in the lead up to the festive season and hopefully some fine warm weather, “remember to keep your properties well mown for the up coming fire season, especially over Christmas and the New Year. The Brigade will be back at the Show every year so make sure you come along and meet us at our stand, or maybe at one of our fundraisers, cos we don’t want to be visiting you at home!” “There are many, many other Show winners that we haven’t bee n a bl e to m ent io n personally, but at least one member of the Courtenay A & P Show Committee will have congratulated them personally on behalf of all of us,” Jane explained. “I would encourage people who are keen to enter the Show next year, or want to find out more about entering, to attend the workshops we’ll be running over the coming months. In the meantime follow our Facebook page to keep in touch,” she concluded.

Summer in Selwyn is back – check your letterbox this week for your events’ guide Over sixty events are coming to the district as part of the Summer in Selwyn event programme, kicking off in December and continuing until late March. Selwyn residents will receive the Summer in Selwyn events guide in the mail this week. There is something for everyone to enjoy this summer in Selwyn. Council-run events include two outdoor movies at Lincoln and Leeston and two drive-in movies at Rolleston and Darfield, starting with the Christmas classic movie Elf on December 16th. Council Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett said there is something for everyone to enjoy this summer in Selwyn. “Summer events are

fun for the whole family and help make Selwyn a great place to live by connecting people to their community,” he added. “We are proud to present a fantastic line up again this summer, with a great range of community-organised events on offer as well.” Pool Parties will include a special Christmas Pool Party at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, as well as events at the community pools in Darfield, Southbridge and, for the first time, Sheffield. The ever popular Teddy Bears’ Picnic will return to Rolleston Community Centre and Rolleston Reserve jam-packed with family fun. Picnic in the Park events and Summer Skate/Scooter Jams are coming to eight locations around the district, while a new event - Summer 3X3 Basketball Jam – encourages anyone to

jump into a game and have a go. Other entertainment includes live music at local parks with A Month of Sundays in February. Residents can bring a picnic and relax while listening to an outstanding line-up of our local talented musicians at the Lincoln Green. A number of Selwyn District Libraries events are also taking place over summer including craft and story book workshops, Summer Reading Bingo and games challenges spurring on multi-generational fun. A great range of communityorganised events are on offer too including Christmas parades, fêtes and picnics, and fitness-related events.

New Zealand Post’s great working relationship with My Food Bag was highlighted in this year’s Integrated Report and Christmas is no different! This year they are working with the team from My Food Bag to spread festive cheer to communities across New Zealand. The ‘My Christmas Gift campaign’ last year was a great success, with more than 1,500 boxes of goodies distributed by New Zealand Post. My Food Bag customers load their empty My Food Bag boxes with gifts and food which is then collected by New Zealand Post and delivered to charities all over New Zealand. In 2017, over 20,000 items were collected and delivered to

local charities including the City Mission and the Red Cross. “We had been absolutely frantic, in fact we had our busiest day ever. My Food Bag’s support with this amazing initiative is so well timed and so very much appreciated! In reality I believe we would have run out of food without them and their customer’s support,” said Matthew Mark from the Christchurch City Mission. This year the team at My Food Bag are aiming to replicate the success of last year’s campaign, starting earlier with calls to customers to help those in need. “Our partnership with New Zealand Post to make our My Christmas Gift campaign happen

is something we are particularly proud of. We look forward to making Christmas a little bit brighter for many more families across New Zealand this festive season” said Kevin Bowler, Bowler CEO My Food Bag. New Zealand Post AOC Processing Centre Manager Mark Davidson said that while things are busy over the Christmas season, being able to drop off the boxes at the different charities feels good. “It is kind of cool seeing all the boxes. It restores your faith in humanity. People have it tough and it is quite good to see people taking the opportunity to help those in need, especially at this time of year,” Mark concluded.

On Saturday, November 24th and in spite of heavy rain, the Prebbleton Crafts and More Market took place. Fortunately everything for the Market takes place indoors making for a dry, warm and pleasant place to browse and shop. “The Market went very well,” said event organiser Trish Clothier. Clothier “There were nearly forty stalls selling a variety of i t e m s i n c l ud i n g y u m my Christmas baking, fudge, novelty door stops, art, chocolate bouquets and gift hampers. There were Christmas crackers along with crackers for dogs, embroidery, honey products, Christmas decorations, items from Handmade Studio and lots and lots more,” she enthused. “Father Christmas wasn't able to put in an appearance this year as he was too busy supervising the toy-making elves at the North Pole,” Trish smiled. However, we did have someone making balloon dogs which were extremely popular with the children. “Everyone thoroughly enjoys coming to this Market, so much so that stallholders are already booking in for next year,” Trish concluded.

West Melton School had 150 learners participate in the Tough Kid Competition on Thursday, November 22nd. This event was run by Sports Canterbury and was held in South New Brighton. The course was an obstacle course which included wading through the muddy estuary, jumping through water obstacle courses and finishing with a hose down from the fire brigade. Pictured are Cailin and Zoe having a great time.

Light drizzle greeted the hardy group of shooters as they arrived at the range on the afternoon of Saturday, November 24th. The Club programme was for two rounds of shooting at 800 yards. The first shooters began in reasonable conditions; which didn’t last. Unfortunately, it was raining steadily during Mark’s shoot. The unanimous decision was made to cancel the second round of shooting. Despite the weather the three shooters from the New Zealand Under 21 team, Daniel, Daniel Megan and Sam shot well, ahead of their upcoming training camp in Wellington. They will represent New Zealand in February 2019. This month twenty five members thoroughly enjoyed a tour along SH73 to the Dobson walkway at the top of Arthur’s Pass and back to Castle Hill Village. The theme of the trip was to enjoy the alpine flora and fauna and other points of interest along the way. This included the effort to eradicate wilding pines, mainly Pinus Contorta, within the Craigieburn Basin and view the new alpine homes and newly established gardens. The weather was mild and sunny and the first stop was the Cave Stream D.O.C car park to view the Rocks and the Caves Info Viewing Area landscaping. From there via the new Bealey Valley SH73 re-alinement to morning tea at the Arthur’s Pass Tea Rooms. On up to the top of Arthur’s Pass to the Temple Basin car Park and the beginning of the Dobson Walkway. With the aid of booklets given Club members by D.O.C. for assistance, each variety of plant and shrub was easily iden fied and of great interest. The Mt Cook Mountain Lily was nearing flowering and was sheltering the lovely flowering white Mountain Fox Glove. Some members extended their walk down through the beech forest and view of Mt Rolleston to Jack’s Hut, before being picked up by the bus. Along the way evidence of the wilding pine management area was seen all the way from Grasmere Sta on right through to the Craigieburn Valley and on to the Torlesse Range. Lunch at ‘Cloudesley’ Castle Hill Village was enjoyed on the lawn on a very warm sunny day, with a great view of the towering mountains around the Valley. From here June guided the members through the many new homes with landscape varia ons from wild established na ve plan ng to more formal areas; all with the hope of reinsta ng the local na ve beech tree forest, tussocks and hebes. Efforts have already been started by the Selwyn District Council to eradicate the Contorta wilding pines on the Village reserve areas. Most members commented how nice it was to stop along the way instead of generally just travelling through in too much of a hurry to pause and ‘soak up’ this amazingly beau ful Alpine area, so close to our homes and a=er 100 kilometres s ll within the Selwyn District. Merry Christmas

As a first grade teacher, I o=en hear from my students things going on in their family. Harry’s mother was expec ng, and naturally Harry was very excited about it. When one day Harry stopped talking about it I was concerned and ques oned him why. “Well”, Harry said, “my mother told me I could feel the baby moving in her stomach, I think she ate it!”
