If it’s newsworthy and you know about it - we’d like to know too!

The eighth annual Hororata Highland Games was held on Saturday, November 10th and welcomed 9,000 visitors who watched the highland dancers fling, drum majors twirl their maces and strong men and women compete in eight disciplines. Many visitors had a go at tossing a caber, discovering Celtic culture in amongst the 120 stalls and were delighted with entertainment throughout the day. The event was held under sunny skies on Saturday after a huge amount of rain saw widespread flooding in other parts of the South Island on Friday. “Set up for the event takes the whole week and we knew the weather was going to challenge us with the heavy rain on Thursday and Friday,” said Cindy Driscoll, Driscoll event manager. The team rose to this challenge and were well prepared,” she added. “We are very lucky with the Hororata Domain as a venue as it coped with the amount of rain we received on the Friday with surface water draining away by the time the gates opened on Saturday.

Being a rural event, we have people who know how to manage ground in the wet, and can supply ideal resources. With kiwi ingenuity and teamwork the event went off without a hitch and many visitors were pleasantly surprised with just how good the grounds were,” Cindy enthused. Chieftain Patrick Hellier, Hellier New Zealand’s highest achieving Highland Games Heavy athlete, commented “It was great for me to experience the full festival surrounding the Heavy Arena where I normally spend most of my time. I enjoyed meeting the Clans and seeing the other competitions. I got to see the final of the Hororata Pie eating competition; which was a new experience. I don’t think I will be changing codes anytime soon! Seeing the Junior and Teen Warriors was really cool as it is great to see young people discover the Highland Games’ sports. The winner of the FMG Teen Warriors, Sam Langford, Langford has a lot of potential and I hope he steps into the amateur grade next year. Hororata is always

a special event for me, but to be there as Chieftain was an honour,” Patrick said. “Being welcomed onto the stage by the local Kapa Haka group and saluted by the Massed Bands was an experience I will never

forget.” he concluded. Over 500 competitors competed in twelve competitive events, including the Tug O’ War, Sack Carry and Small-Bore Rifle Shooting.
