Nathan Carter, Carter a Year 11 student at Darfield High School, has been identified as being on the Autism Disorder Spectrum and has been achieving great things, plus many successes, with his outstanding running ability. After appearing on nationwide television recently, Nathan was seen by a Taranaki schoolteacher who coordinates ‘Running the Spectrum’ charity. Running the Spectrum’s Jason Reid was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in his mid forties (Jason has just been named as 2018 AMP Taranaki Regional Scholarship recipient). He began his charity initiative along with his wife in 2016 to supply running shoes, support and training to enable children in New Zealand, who had been similarly diagnosed, to benefit from an active lifestyle. Jason grew up in Christchurch, but was unable to take part in any school sports or events, due to his severe asthma. However after mastering a lap of the school track and managing his asthma, Jason got the running bug, at age fifteen. When Jason’s son was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at age

six, and not long after Jason was diagnosed with the same condition, it was the catalyst needed to begin Running the Spectrum. The Autism Disorder Spectrum (ASD) is a group of complex brain development challenges, which can cause social, behavioural and communication issues and Jason learnt a lot through his son’s diagnosis. “Running helps us in so many ways,” Jason commented, “but for people on the Autism Spectrum the benefits are magnified.” Running on the Spectrum works with Autism New Zealand, schools and communities to find children who would benefit from the programme and they also work closely with families. In 2017, Jason organised the inaugural ‘Greatest Virtual Run’ (GVR) where runners take part from all over the world and support each other through Facebook/Instagram. The initial event was a huge success, not only in meeting fundraising goals, but also in its ability to assist with creating acceptance for autism. GVR will stage the annual twelve
