The Christchurch Competitions Society held their annual event on July 15th - 20th with the dance section taking place at Villa Maria College. Local TM Dance World (TMDW) attended the ballet/jazz section with over sixty of their dancers competing in teams, solos, duos or trios.

Dancers took to the stage in a variety of styles including Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical and Hip Hop. “There was fabulous dancing from all our students, all week,” said TM Dance World principal, Tara Marshall.

Marshall “Teams night was a highlight with TMDW winning four out of the five classes they were entered in.

They also won the Teachers’ Fancy Dancing Cup for the most points overall,” Tara added proudly.

Selwyn MP, Amy Adams is to host a public information meeting on euthanasia.

Amy has announced that she is planning to hold a public information meeting on euthanasia in Rolleston in August.

“The End of Life Choice Bill is currently going through the Select Committee process in Parliament and I know that many people have strong views on this issue, while others may be unsure,” Amy said.

“Given this, I felt it would be helpful to host a public information evening on this Bill and I have invited two Members of Parliament with contrasting views on this topic to speak at the meeting,” Amy said.

Kathleen (“Darfield had better be the winner, or Craig definitely wouldn’t be happy,” quipped a Darfield Rugby Club spokesperson with a smile.)

While 2018 is the first ‘Craig Miller Memorial Cup’ game, the trophy will be played for each time these two teams meet.

“Waihora kindly made sure the game was at Darfield and are very supportive of this,” the Club spokesperson added. “We are hoping for a big turn out to support this trophy game and Kathleen will present the award to the winning team.”

Craig was a well-known, wellliked, local and until his sudden and unexpected death early in 2017 was a staunch supporter of the Darfield Rugby Club.

Craig first played at Darfield for the seniors in 1985 and carried on playing until 1992. “It's fair to say he was a pretty well respected midfielder and well known for his hard, take-that tackling.” He also had a background in representative rugby for both Ellesmere and Canterbury.

Craig joined the Darfield Rugby Club Committee in 2000 and after only one year took on the role of Senior Vice President, followed by the Presidency in 2003 and 2004 (guiding the Club through its centenary). In 2005 he was elected as Club captain where his no-nonsense, well organised approach to getting things done really came

The late Craig Miller was a staunch supporter of Darfield Rugby. to the fore. In 2013 he was awarded a much-deserved Club Honorary Life Membership; he also represented the Club on the Ellesmere committee and was extremely active on the ERSU. “Craig was a leader at the Club, and we’re in no doubt that things wouldn’t be running as successfully as they do, without that background work he put in over the years - and always to an incredibly high standard.

“Craig had numerous ideas and plans and we will make sure they happen. Many already have, and this is his legacy to the Club; everything from well run Club days, ERSU Finals Days, fishing trips and new shower block, to the Clubrooms viewing deck and training field lights. But probably his last and greatest of them all, the Crusaders playing at Darfield, against the Highlanders; they were all done to such a high standard that we will never forget.”

The Darfield Rugby Club hopes there’s a great turnout for this Saturday’s game and for the presentation to the winning team to follow.

Darfield’s local Dentist David Rumble will be absent from his practise shortly to accompany son Zack to the Czech Republic.

But when they depart on August 3rd it’s not just a holiday, it’s so Zack can represent New Zealand in the Junior Men’s Quadruple Sculls.

Zack, who rowed four seasons for St Andrew’s College, was instrumental in the School’s 2017 win of the Maadi Cup. He also featured in the winning Springbok 4, and took a bronze in the coxless pairs.

Regional Performance Centre in Christchurch and competed at Nationals as a school leaver.

Being under eighteen meant that in May 2018 Zack was eligible to trial for New Zealand Juniors. He achieved a New Zealand Junior trial as a sculler and won a seat in the New Zealand Junior Quad. Zack changed from rowing to sculling when Rowing New Zealand asked him to widen his skills before trialling, he had never sculled competitively before December 2017. Zack found his way very quickly with sculling and only had two and a half months training under his belt before placing fourth in the New Zealand U20 Finals at Nationals - as a seventeen year old.

Zack was a keen rugby player and a representative, Canterbury Country and Metro team player until 2017 when he decided to go completely with rowing and realise his dream to

represent New Zealand. He is extremely grateful for the support he has had leading up to this New Zealand selection and departure.

“Zack loves training, competing and working in a team environment,” his father David explained.

As part of this current campaign the team were required to relocate to Cambridge where they have been training on Lake Karapiro and living together as a squad.

Zack commented, “the environment has been competitive and challenging, but above all extremely exciting.”

This has been a great opportunity for Zack to challenge himself and place New Zealand on top of the world in the Quad Sculls. Best of luck to all involved, The News wishes you all the best and looks forward to hearing how everything goes.

Local artist, mother and grandmother Kristine Daly of Darfield took her grandchildren up the Port Hills Gondola during the holiday, where they found more than they expected.

Kristine knew about the school holiday ‘Painted Rocks’ phenomena that had had Oxford children seeking and re-hiding the adorned stones, but they never anticipated finding one for themselves.

On the outing granddaughter Maia Daly found a stone with a painted bird on it and noted on the back of it ‘#ChCh Rocks.

Being fortunate enough to actually find two such rocks, the family re-hid one and brought the other home, thinking it would be an awesome holiday exercise for Darfield - and so it has been!

“The object is to find a rock, take a photo of it (just the rock, or with the finder), post it on the appropriate Facebook/ Instagram page and keep the game going,” Kristine said.

Kristine explained.

“We collected rocks from the Waimak, painted them and put 48 around the Darfield township, with a few photo clues online. The next day we checked to see how many had been found and hid another twenty.

Assisted by Skye and Harriet Collins we’ve now got a few more decorated and ready to hide too,” Kristine said.

embraces with energy, fondness and commitment. Friends and colleagues encouraged her to pursue this role after seeing her act as MC at several weddings, as well as speak at a family funeral.

The skills Louise possesses, along with her natural ability in this field, are combined with a warm personality, good sense of humour and the personal experience of being part of a large, extended family.

Louise’s hope in providing both marriage and funeral celebrancy is to facilitate ceremonies and events that ring true, strike the right note and reflect a family’s wishes.

“Weddings are generally happy events, but they can also be stressful,” Louise said. “My role is to make you feel that you are in safe hands and that your exchange of vows is carried out in a way that reflects you as a couple, on your very special day.”

One significant wedding she officiated at recently was the marriage of two of her exstudents.

“It was a privilege for me to connect with this couple who I had taught in Year 8.

“The groom and best man’s behaviour had not significantly altered since they were twelve; the bride was an angel,” Louise quipped. “They laughed, and some of them cried, but my fondness for them had not diminished over the years.

“I love that couples can now write their own vows and design

their own ceremonies in a deeply, meaningful way.”

Funerals, although sad and at times traumatic, can also be when families remember, reconnect and reflect. Louise’s role is to facilitate a ceremony that allows family and friends to grieve in a meaningful way. She commented that she found it an honour to be part of this day.

“My facilitation of your ceremony will be supportive, sensitive and flexible, without being intrusive,” Louise concluded.

Craig Petrie and his family now call Darfield home, after moving here from Wales in 2013 and admit to falling in love with the place.

Craig and wife Danielle are both Welsh but almost two year old daughter Kendall, Kendall was born here in Darfield.

Craig has been enjoying full and half Ironman triathlon events for the last six years, having started in the sport just prior to leaving Wales. He commented that he has enjoyed it even more since arriving in New Zealand and prefers competing as an individual.

“My training is a little leisurely and scheduled around my fulltime job and family,” Craig explained.

“I do however train hard, whenever, or wherever, I can, in at least one of the disciplines once a day, if not more, leading up to races.”

“He really has put in a lot of hard work to get to where he is today,” Danielle added, “and his family are all very proud of him.”

Competition in Challenge Wanaka earlier in the year (February 18th), gave Craig the necessary qualifying result for a place to represent Team New Zealand at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championships. Craig competed in his age group at the long distance triathlon event, which was held in Odense, Denmark, on July 14th.

“I'm sure Craig would agree, that this was the highlight in his sport so far,” Danielle commented. “He felt it was such an honour to be selected to represent Team New Zealand, especially being Welsh. It was an opportunity he couldn't pass up,” Danielle added.

The long distance triathlon Craig competed in, was made up of a 3km Swim, 120km Bike and a 30km Run.

Craig finished in an amazing seven hours, five minutes, comprised of a 57 minute swim, 3hr 38min bike and a 2hr 21 min run.

He finished eighteenth in the world for his age group!

His race didn't quite run as smoothly as he had hoped though! When Craig was coming out of the water the zip on his

wetsuit got stuck, thankfully a nearby competitor from the USA ripped him out of it! Fortunately it didn’t appear to slow him down that much and he still managed an impressive finish time.

Returning home to New Zealand, Craig was looking forward to a bit of rest time and some fun with his little family.

Tunneller’s Cottage owned by Brendan and Natalie Canton.

The award winning Tunnellers Cottage is settled in Arthurs Pass. This year it won first equal prize in the Retention and Restoration of domestic architecture at the Canterbury Heritage Awards, which were held on June 15th at the Isaac Theatre Royal. The biennial awards attracted over seventy entries across six categories.

Brendan and Natalie Canton are the current owners of the Tunnellers Cottage and have also spent the past fifteen years restoring an art deco house in Christchurch. Prior to purchasing the cottage the couple had looked at several old buildings and churches around New Zealand and became familiar with the challenges of owning and restoring historically significant buildings.

“In April 2017 Natalie went out one evening to pick up pizza and came home with a real estate brochure,” Brendan recalled. “It featured a picture of a cute little red cottage. After one brief site visit, some research and lawyer’s checks I attended our first property auction and the cottage became ours,” he added.

In February 2018 the pair met with Selwyn District Council heritage consultant Dr Ann McEwan. “She made us realise that our passion for the preservation of the cottage was quite unique and special,” Natalie and Brendan said.

The couple’s decision to enter the cottage for the awards was driven by two factors: Their strong desire to have this humble building recognised for its significance to the local people and area. As well as wanting others to realise that heritage can be accessible to

everyone.

“While it’s wonderful that there are those who devote large amounts of money to preserve our significant heritage, it’s also important that everyone can play a part if they have the desire and passion to,” the pair stressed.

The current, and previous, owners of Tunneller’s Cottage have been dedicated to the retention, maintenance and preservation of this cottage. A thorough research project provided a good understanding of the history of it and resulted in authentic restoration.

Originally built in 1910, it was then a three-roomed married man’s quarters. The original occupiers remain unknown. In the early twentieth century it was a tunnel workers’ day hut during the construction of the Otira Tunnel. Anyone who lives, or has driven through, West Melton will be aware of the huge construction project on the main road that is the new community centre. West Melton Playcentre will be part of this new facility and as construction is progressing rapidly, move-in day for them, won’t be far away (hopefully beginning of Term 4).

parent since 1990, and coordinator since 1999, she has decided to retire at long last and will be sorely missed,” she commented. “We held a goodbye party on July 1st that was well attended by Playcentre families; past and present.

“Capably filling Pam’s shoes is new coordinator Linda Weed, Weed

who brings with her a wealth of experience, having worked with Playcentre for seventeen years in a variety of capacities. We warmly welcome Linda and look forward to working, learning and playing together,” Fiona ended.

KIRWEE PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 at Kirwee RFC has been a busy year. Starting with our Friday night ripper for juniors pre Christmas to get the children started.

Our annual Tens’ Tournament, held in March, was well attended on a sunny Saturday in Kirwee, that was enjoyed by all.

The Club and the Kirwee Highwaymen Golden Oldies jointly hosted three overseas Golden Oldies teams at our Clubrooms. Two from Australia and one Argentinian team. They were in Christchurch for the World Tournament and they enjoyed an afternoon of festivities including a jersey

auction and a meal. It was a great success.

We have an awesome Junior Club with an increase in numbers this year. We have two Under 6 and two Under 7 Ripper Teams. An Under 8, Under 9, Under 10 and an Under 11 combined with Sheffield. Thanks to all the parents and special mention to Blair and Amy Jones for all their work with the Junior Club.

Senior rugby is ag ain represented with a Div 2 team which got off to a strong start. A young team with plenty of fresh faces and two young coaches, hopefully this bodes well for the

coming seasons. They have enjoyed good local support with plenty of past players turning out at these games.

Div 3 is a team that continues to improve with the return of some familiar faces and a mix of young and old. The team is having a great season with plenty of success on the field and lots of fun off it.

It’s another great season at Kirwee Division III this year with the team continuing to build momentum due to great support from more local players putting their boots back on.

The Canterbury Avalanche Response Group is now better equipped to respond to a real life emergency after a successful training operation.

Recently Canterbury Police, ski industry personnel and SAR groups took part in a largescale avalanche response exercise near Mt Cheeseman Ski area.

Acting Sergeant Paul Beaver, Beaver Canterbury Police SAR Coordinator, said the exercise, dubbed Operation CARE, was developed by Avalanche NZ and simulated seven people being caught in an avalanche.

“The exercise was a really helpful learning opportunity for the fifty people from the avalanche response group and St John Ambulance who were involved.

“We gained invaluable experience in as close to a reallife scenario as we can get.

“This means we’ll be better prepared to respond quickly and effectively to future avalanche incidents.”

NZ Police are very grateful to all the organisations and

individuals that contributed to the running of the successful exercise.

“The exercise was designed to test the effectiveness of the Canterbury Avalanche Response Plan and to assess the groups’ readiness to respond to an avalanche incident,” said acting Sergeant Beaver.

“When emergency services are called upon to respond to an avalanche, effective planning and coordination between Police and other emergency services can mean the difference between life and death.

“Our team performed outstandingly during the exercise and we are now the most prepared we can be to

respond to a real-life incident.”

Acting Sergeant Beaver added that there is a danger of avalanche at any time there is sufficient snow on a slope.

“Avalanches occur naturally all the time, however in the majority of cases where people get caught in an avalanche they have triggered it themselves.

“It’s vital that people are aware of the danger and know how to avoid avalanche terrain.

“For anyone buried in an avalanche, time is critical and their best chance of survival is a companion rescue, so we encourage people to always carry the right equipment avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel - and know how to use them.”

To the Editors: After having a stroke I started exercising to build up my strength and found the parallel bars and the monkey bars at Almond Park on Clinton Street were extremely helpful and fun to use. I was shocked when I went to use them again and found that they had been pulled down. Older people need this type of muscle building equipment, we do not want a swing or a seesaw. Could they please be rebuilt as soon as possible?

To the Editors Wattie’s Cans for Good is back; this is the national can ‘collection, creation, education and donation’ campaign run by The Salvation Army in partnership with Wattie’s, for New Zealand schools.

The event will run over a fortnight from August 13th to 24th and gives kindergartens to schools nationwide the opportunity to help make a difference by collecting cans for The Salvation Army foodbanks - restocking shelves in the middle of the harsh winter period.

The goal for 2018 is to collectively donate over 110,000 cans; Wattie’s will kick start the campaign with a donation of 25,000 cans.

All cans will be given to The Salvation Army for use in local foodbanks enabling kindergartens and schools to make a direct and real difference to those in need in their local community.

On Sunday, July 15th keen golfers were treated to a MidWinter Christmas family fun day at the Hororata Golf Club. The weather held off for a very successful day.

The format of the golf was nine hole, pairs Ambrose, which sees each person in their pair having a hit, the pair then choose the best shot, and both play from there. It was reported that this was a forgiving and fun game for all levels of golfers.

The day attracted twenty pairs and some hot scoring - and it was commented on that it was wonderful to see so many children playing. There was a range of golfing abilities throughout the field, but everyone had a go and there was much laughter throughout.

Santa managed to wangle a golf cart and distributed lollies to deserving golfers on the Course. He also performed the prize giving at the end of the game before heading off, and was farewelled with a round of appreciative applause.

Kevin Hughes, Hughes the golf pro at Hororata Golf Club was on hand to provide coaching tips and advice to players. Pip Deans accompanied groups on the Course and steered players in the right direction. Pip also assisted some of the smaller golfers to stay on course and get back to the Clubhouse in time for prize giving and afternoon tea!

The newly opened Willows Café, Glentunnel at the Hororata Golf Club provided delicious platters and cupcakes for afternoon tea, which were well received by hungry golfers of all ages.

Event organisers thank everyone that came along and participated and the appreciated assistance of Santa, Pip, Catherine, Catherine James, James Alice and Stuart for their help on the day.

“Kevin’s contribution to the Club with our coaching programme is greatly appreciated,” said a Club spokesperson, “as was his provision of some great prizes and coaching on the day.”
