COUNCIL AND AGE CONCERN LAUNCH OLDER PERSONS HUB
The Selwyn District Council and Age Concern Canterbury opened the doors of the new Older PersonsHub inRolleston recently to o er a variety of services to the district’s older generations.
The former library space at the Rolleston Community Centre had already been used as a Youth Hub by Selwyn’s youth, but on weekday mornings it will now also be used to supportolderpeople.
The Older Persons Hub was launched at the inaugural Volunteer Expo, which highlighted the incredible impact volunteer roles can have on the district, including our youth and ageing population.
“We are very proud and grateful that Age Concern Canterbury has stepped into this opportunity to create an Older Persons Hub which is a wonderful and tangible result from the Te Paepae Ageing Well strategy the Council adopted last year,” says Denise Kidd, Executive Director Community Facilities and
Services.
“Community feedback showed a strong need for better support and services for the older generations to make Waikirikiri Selwyn District a greatplaceforthemtoage.”
Kidd points out that the Council has also adopted Pika Amokura Youth Strategy to cater for the younger generation.
“Selwyn is growing fast which requires more support and services for young and old, as well as places to meet. We hope that the Rolleston Community Centre will become that place for older persons in the mornings and
younger people in the afternoons,”saysKidd.
The Older Persons Hub will be run by Age Concern Canterbury and be open from 9am-noon eachweekday.
Charlie Hudson from Age Concern Canterbury says the hub will be a place for ageing residents to learn about the available services, ask for support or just come in for a cupoftea.
“People might be surprised about the long list of services we o er, from community health and home visits to elder abuse support, social outings and a variety of courses,” says Charlie.

TASMAN’S BEST YOUNG FARMER
A Lincoln-based Young Farmer has inched closer to national victory after being crowned as Tasman’stopyoungfarmer.
George Letham, who grew up on a dairy farm near Rakaia, successfully navigated various challenges and modules at the FMG Young Farmer of the Year competition, ultimately winningthetitle.
“It’s a pretty cool feeling now thatit’ssunkin!”saysGeorge.
After competing in 2024, George had a bit more experience under his belt and an understanding of how the Contestworks.
He says, “After entering last year, it was nice coming into the competition with a bit more knowledge of how it all works – especially the farmlet and where you can really pick up points. There was quite a mix of challenges and modules this year. I was hanging out for a dairy module, but there wasn’t much of that, it definitely kept me on my toes! It was a great mix overall and gave a solid snapshot of the Canterburyarea.”
Participants competed in three categories: AgriKidsNZ for primary school pupils, FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year for high school students, and FMG Young Farmer of the Year for those older. Key events included a head-tohead quiz and practical skills tests. Notably, George excelled in the Agri-Sports challenge at theMalvernA&PShow.
The AgriKidsNZ competition saw over 90 primary school children competing, with Fred Maher, Manawa Doonan, and
Liam Underwood from Seddon School claiming victory. In the FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year category, John Lundy and Harrison Parish from Rangiora High School won the title.
These top teams, alongside George Letham, will represent the Tasman region in the Grand Final in Invercargill in July. The event is supported by several sponsors, including FMG, Ravensdown, and Lincoln University.

WILL THE OCR DICTATE LOWER RATES?
By Ginny Nelson, By Ginny Nelson, GMI Mortgage Adviser. Adviser.
The OCR has had another haircut, but will this filter through to lower fixed rates?
One would hope so, but with Trumprattling thecages of the world economy, it may be that inflationary pressures keep the rates steady or even see them increase. Hopefully by the time this goes to print there will
havebeenadrop.
At least the floating rates have come down, so it is a little easiertoridethewaveforabit toseewhereitgoes.
As always, you need to consider your personal situation and appetite for risk to decide on certainty over hope. At 5.39% for five years, there is great certainty there. That is a good deal lower than
twoyearsago.
It is worth mentioning if you are relying on Kiwisaver for your first home deposit in the short term, it may be wise to talk to your provider or financial adviser as to what fund you should be in to lower yourrisk.
Let's hope Autumn sees more thantheleavesfalling.

We are whizzing through the year so far with the first quarter of it already behind us. It has been lovely to have a break over Easter before getting out across the district on ANZAC Day where I attended services at Burnham, Leeston, Kirwee, andLincoln. Itwashearteningtoseeso many people paying their respects. A big thank you to the RSAs across Selwyn for the organisationofsomanywell-runservices.
In the last fortnight Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced the Q2 Plan for the next three months ahead. It includes actions to boost tourism and international education, as well as pushing ahead on our 30-year National Infrastructure Plan to attract investment and give our construction sector long-term certainty. A bigger economy means more jobs, higher incomes, and more money in people’s back pockets. It also means we can a ord the healthandeducationservicesKiwisdeserve. For further evidence that our Government is getting the economy back on track, in the last fortnight the Reserve Bank announced a further reduction to the O cial Cash Rate (OCR) – a cutof25basispointsto3.5percent.Thesecuts are pushing banks to lower mortgage interest rates. This follows other recent positive

economic news, with Stats NZ announcing that GDP grew by 0.7 percent in the December 2024quarter,showingNewZealand’s economy is turning the corner. We’ve also tamed inflation – now at 2.2 percent, down from a highof7.3percentunderLabour.
Defence Minister Judith Collins recently announced the new Defence Capability Plan which will boost our operability domestically and internationally. Specifically in the Selwyn region, Burnham military camp will be receiving long-needed upgrades to its military accommodation as well as gaining a new regionalsupplyfacility.
In other news, I amdelighted to announce that my 2025 Youth MP is Lucy Garner from Rolleston College. I was impressed by her passion for youth issues and her leadership skills. I am very impressed by how enthusiastic the young people in Selwyn are to represent our community. The calibre of applications I received was overwhelming and I want to congratulateeveryonewhoapplied.

Two campers are hiking in the woods when one is bitten on the rear end by a rattlesnake. “I’ll go into town for a doctor,” the other says. He runs ten miles to a small town and finds the only doctor delivering a baby.
“I can’t leave,” the doctor says. “But here’s what to do. Take a knife, cut a little X where the bite is, suck out the poison and spit it on the ground.”
The guy runs back to his friend, who is in agony. “What did the doctor say?” the victim cries.
“He says you’re gonna die.”
