A very special event took place at Darfield’s Westmar Senior Care facility on Monday, July 16th when the day was filled with celebrations to recognise the one-hundredth birthday of Ellen Lindsay Mabel Henderson/Bradley. There was a morning high-tea with a birthday cake of course, at Westmar, before the Malvern Community Trust took care of a celebratory afternoon tea, later in the day. The News spoke to Ellen’s daughter Adrienne Fraser of Kirwee, to fill in some of the background to Ellen’s one hundred years, she told us: Ellen was born at Katiki Beach, North 0tago to lsobel (Tottie Tottie) Tottie and Archie Henderson on July 16th, 1918. At that time, Archie and lsobel lived at Dansey's Pass, but they packed up a horse and cart and walked to Katiki Beach to an Aunt’s farm for the birth. This must have taken six or seven days. Archie then went on horseback to tell Tottie's family, at Tokaraki, news of the birth. Archie didn’t get back to see his new daughter for three months, as he became snowed in. Some time after Ellen’s birth Tottie moved from the Pass to Tapui to be closer to family.
Ellen attended the local school until she was eleven, then went on to Waitaki Girls High. During this time she lived with her Grandparents in Oamaru. Within a year of each other they both died, so Ellen then went on to Tes ch em ak er s ( Cat h olic School), as a boarder. The family successfully farmed at Tapui until the 1930’s when they moved to Clandeboye (South Canterbury) to a much smaller holding. During the war Ellen worked in the Post 0ffice at Temuka where eventually she met Charlie Bradley, recently returned from the Second World War. After marrying, Charlie was transferred to Timaru with CFCA (Canterbury Farmers Coop Assn) Department Store. Soon after, they moved to Otipua Rd in Timaru, where Ellen had two children, Philip and Adrienne. Adrienne Ellen’s interests over the years were of course bringing up her children, her love of gardening and more recently, playing bridge. The family had a bach at the 0pihi River where they spent most weekends and school holidays. They did a lot of white -baiting and fishing, and Ellen also had a garden there as well. ln later years she was a founding member of Toast Mistress (now Toast Masters) in Timaru and also enjoyed many

years of helping local school children prepare their speeches for exams. Ellen learnt to play bridge and played until she was 92, when she had to give up due to failing eyesight. “I can tell you she was devastated,” Adrienne explained. “At that time playing at the Sumner Bridge Club there were seven over 90’s I think, and Ellen is the only one left.” Ellen moved to Christchurch in 1996 to live with her daughter Adrienne, husband Roger and granddaughter Grace. Following the earthquakes, and after a short time at North Beach, they all moved to Kirwee. Ellen has three grandchildren
