Reported by all as an amazing community event, well planned and organised, the inaugural Matariki in Malvern, proudly hosted by Two Rivers Community Trust, took place last Saturday (16th) in

Darfield. Selwyn Mayor, Sam Broughton noted in his welcome speech that this was the very first event of its kind in Malvern.

Over five hundred people from across Malvern came to

celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, providing a fabulous opportunity for whanau and friends to spend time together.

belong, contribute and flourish”, was well and truly evident during the evening, with many commenting on being proud of living here in Malvern.

Local author, mother, grandmother, reverend and university graduate, Louise Deans has just published the historical fiction/biography of William Deans - an eminently readable book about one of Canterbury’s founding fathers.

Louise, who was born in Timaru left there to attend Canterbury University in 1965, before marrying James Deans in 1969.

Adviser to the Finance Minister of Bahrain, in the Middle East, they were called home to New Zealand to take over the Homebush farm. A property which had been in the Deans’ family since 1851. There, Louise attained three more university degrees (in theology) and was ordained to the priesthood in 1989.

Louise has lived at Homebush for more than forty years, has brought up her four children there and now enjoys thirteen grandchildren (although not all of them reside in Canterbury).

She also writes books and runs a tourist business at the Homebush Stables.

Louise writes: “William Deans, an extraordinarily passionate, often overlooked, early New Zealand pioneer, was a prolific letter writer. This work of historical fiction is reconstructed from these letters and told in the first person. William’s story brings alive not only his struggle to survive in this new land, but also fascinating historical events he was witness to, including: the complete failure of the New Zealand Company and Edward Gibbon Wakefield to prepare for the first settlers' arrival on the shores of Petone in January 1840; the breakdown of social order in the new settlement: the establishment of the first republic in New Zealand; the Company's and other settlers' complete disregard for Maori, their land and their culture; and later, in Canterbury, the vicious attacks against him and his brother John Robert Godley.

William was an intelligent, well-

educated young man, resourceful and energetic. He wanted to make his own way. He decided that the Port Cooper (Canterbury) Plains would be perfect for farming and brought his staff and stock to Putaringamotu (Riccarton) in 1843, settling there and farming in partnership with his brother John.

John Since the South Island had not been claimed by any government, the brothers took a lease with Ngai Tahu, sanctioned by the Governor, for six miles in any given direction from Putaringamotu. This area is now the city of Christchurch.

When John Robert Godley arrived to establish and take charge of the Canterbury Pilgrim Settlement, their situation rapidly changed for the worse.

Representing the church of England and The New Zealand Company, Godley was in no mood to abide Scottish Presbyterians. He refused to acknowledge their status as legitimate leasees with Ngai Tahu and fought hard to throw them off their land. William stood his ground and battled fiercely for his rights.

He won the battle, but died doing so.

While William Deans did not live to see the success that his family made of their settlement in Canterbury, the name Deans remains synonymous with the development of what is one of the most productive provinces of New Zealand.”

Get dressed up warm and head down to the Darfield Domain on Sunday, July 1st, where the Darfield Fundraising Fair is taking place.

The event has been put together by ex-local woman and event planner, Sam Clough and is raising funds for the Stokes/ Cant family who lost their home and all their possessions in a Darfield house fire on May, 16th.

Cant have lived in the Darfield area all their lives and have a good support base of family and friends, but this doesn’t make up for losing the foundations of what they had established for their family.

Briar, Aaron and their three children, Jessie, Jessie (6 years), Ranger, Ranger (3 years) and Sapphire (18 months old), have been staying with family in the area.

forward to moving in.

“The kids have been loving having a ‘sleepover’ but it will be nice to get back into a routine,” Briar said. “We are all doing well, but finding a house was our number one priority.”

The funds raised at the Fair will be used to purchase the bigger items that are needed in a home, such as a washing machine and will also go toward the bond for the new rental.

At the Fair there will be som eth ing to ent ert ai n everyone, including bouncy castles, a bike track, show performances, food, and games.

There will be an ultimate obstacle course, which is being set up and run by the Darfield Volunteer Fire Brigade, which will have challenges for all ages.

Sam has also organised a talent show to take place on the day, those who wish to enter can sign up and email her. There are limited spaces available for the show and winners will take away a prize.

Also running is a baking competition, where people are encouraged to bringing along their favourite baking for the judges to try. There is a $5 entry fee for biscuits, slices and muffins; and $8 for cakes and cupcakes. Entry forms for the baking competition and raffle tickets are available to purchase at the Malvern News office.

Organisers are hopeful of a good day enjoyed by many in the community and advise that regardless of the weather, the event will take place, either on the rugby fields if fine, or in the Darfield Recreation Centre if it is raining.

“The whole day has been designed to be about family and fun, with the added bonus of raising funds for a family in need,” organiser Sam concluded.

“I have been blown away by the willingness of so many to contribute to this event in such a diverse variety of ways,” said spokesperson for the organisers, Kelly Maude.

Maude In the Darfield Recreation Centre visitors were warmly welcomed by a spectacular fire poi performer as they walked through the special tunnel entrance which created an atmosphere of native bush at night time, during Matariki.

There was an excited buzz as the Hall filled up before the event officially got underway with the mihi whakatau (welcoming ceremony) lead by Mana Whenua from Ngāti Moki Marae, Te Taumutu. Nine students, one from each of the Malvern schools, proudly represented their school on stage as part of the ceremony.

There was a tangible mix of excitement and nerves from the kapa haka performers, who pulled out all stops to put on

truly impressive performances.

Kapa haka instructors Matua Wiremu Puanaki and Debby Lewis at Darfield High School, and Matua Anton McLean, who leads all the primary school groups, had done an outstanding job of teaching kapa haka to Malvern tamariki.

Organisers gave special thanks to Jack Guy and Charli Gilbertson from Darfield Primary School, who bravely stood in front of the huge crowd to give their mihi in te reo Māori, and a speech explaining the meaning behind the concluding waiata of the performance. Te Wai Tuku Kiri is a special waiata to Te Taumutu Rūnanga, who gifted it to the primary kapa haka groups to sing. Students from the primary schools took time to think about what the waiata means to them.

“It reminded them of our rivers, that run close to our schools. It made them feel very proud of our area. It reminded them that rivers are an important part of the life cycle and run across our

land here in Malvern. Our rivers have been here all our life and this has been the same for our ancestors. We need to listen to our land, take care of our rivers and keep them clean.”

The Recreation Centre was then transformed into a banquet hall as over 500 delicious hāngi meals were enjoyed, along with homemade soup and fruit crumble!

“It was quite remarkable to see everyone sitting down to eat together,” Kelly added.

Following the meal Hands-On Stations generated a new hive of activity as visitors wandered around having a go at a variety of different Matariki themed offerings.

“It was lovely to see people of all ages trying new things and taking mementoes home with them,” Kelly said.

They were part of a large con t in g en t o f st ud e nt s representing five local schools, Greendale, Glentunnel, Darfield Primary, Darfield High and West Melton, who joined hundreds of other students from around Canterbury.

Holly, Jake, and Chloe, from Glentunnel, took part in the level 1 gymnastic competition, and woke up around six o’clock, to get across town to the C h r i s t c h u rc h Sc h o o l of Gymnastics at QEII. A Glentunnel School spokesperson reported the pupils competed well on the four items of apparatus; beam, bars, floor, and vault and were proud of their improvements and effort.

The school also had students competing in level 2 and the Iron level.

The two Glentunnel teams scored highly in the teams’ event with an overall second and third placing.

The students had been training at lunchtime each week leading up to this competition.

On Monday, June 18th, Glentunnel student, Jamie, along with a number of other local school students, competed in the Canterbury Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition at Olympia Stadium in Wigram.

She had learnt her routines thanks to the Darfield Gym Club on a Friday, and her coach Bronwyn Berry.

The original Sheffield Hall Incorporated was created in December 1961 to own the Sheffield Community Hall.

In 1996 the Selwyn District Council offered to take over the running and all maintenance of the hall and a targeted rate was levied by Selwyn District Council in 1996/97.

From that point Sheffield Hall Incorporated found no need to meet in accordance with its constitution, and in December 2000 it was struck off the register as it failed to comply with the obligations of the Incorporated Societies Act. After the earthquakes the

Sheffield Hall is in need of strengthening and repair, and the Selwyn District Council has approached the Community with a proposal that it acquire the Hall for the purchase price of $1. They will then pay approximately $300,000 for the repairs and strengthening.

If the Selwyn District Council ever seeks to dispose of the Hall, they will offer it back to the Community for the same price as it was purchased.

A Special General Meeting is being held on July, 5th at the Hall, to call for persons to be nominated to the Sheffield Hall Incorporated Society.

The purpose of the meeting is to form a committee of ten members, consisting of a President, Secretary, Treasurer and seven Committee Members.

The newly formed committee will run the Incorporated Society and discuss the future of the Hall and the proposal for sale from the Selwyn District Council.

All members of the society are able to vote on the resolution.

Any persons who are interested and prepared to be members of the Sheffield Hall Incorporated Society are encouraged to attend this Special General Meeting.

On Sunday, June, 24th Darfield Hair Boutique will hold a Cut-athon in support of ‘Look Good, Feel Better’.

The hair salon on Darfield’s main street is owned by the Seaward family and operated by hairstylist Phoebe Seaward.

“We chose to fundraise for ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ (LGFB) because being part of the beauty industry, we are very aware that how you look impacts on how you feel,” Phoebe explained.

“It was important to me to back something that gave people a practical and proactive way to deal with some of the side effects associated with cancer treatment.”

Look Good, Feel Better is a free, non-medical, brandneutral, public service programme that focusses on problems associated with the visible side-effects of cancer treatment. With the aim of helping cancer patients literally look good and feel better.

‘Look Good, Feel Better’ also offer two hour classes which provide an opportunity to relax, have fun, feel special, do something practical, be proactive and connect with people who are going through something similar - away from the world of diagnosis and treatment.

“I really love that not only do

this Group provide tips and tricks, but also all of the people attending go home with a goody bag filled with amazing beauty products and skin care, so they can carry on with what they’ve learnt at home,” Phoebe said.

Darfield Hair Boutique will be offering discount haircuts, blow waves and nail services for everyone on the day. Bloom Boutique MediSpa will also be on site offering the opportunity to have a nail shape, tidy and polish. Booking for all treatments are essential and all proceeds from the day will be going to support the charity.

Saturday, June 9th saw a convivial group of knitters at the Darfield Library and Service Centre knit together and enjoy good chat and cheer. The focus of this Knit in Public day was to create beanies for the Neonatal Trust and to date twenty two beanies are completed. Many knitters in the community visited the library to collect a knitting pattern, and any beanies still being knitted can be dropped off at the library over the next few weeks.

World Wide Knit In Public Day is the largest knitter event in the world, and connects a very colourful, passionate and cozy community of knitters. It was established in 2005 as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each others’ company. This event clearly demonstrates that it is not only grannies who knit, and in each community there is a wealth of knitting knowledge to be shared.

Uterine infection is a preventable disease in a bitch!

For anyone that has a female dog that they are not planning to breed from, Darfield Vetent stress that getting it spayed is the very best option.

One in four female dogs, that haven’t been spayed, will develop a pyometra (pus in the uterus) and this serious disease not only usually requires surgery, but can also be life threatening, if not noticed in time. Vetent Darfield see this on average once a month.

“The typical history is that the bitch was in heat one to three months ago, is drinking more and seems a bit quieter, sometimes has a vaginal discharge and maybe isn’t eating as well,” said a Vetent Darfield spokesperson. “The signs can be subtle and often we are presented with a dog that has rapidly gone down hill and needs urgent surgery to save their life. Surgery done at this point is still very successful, but is more challenging,” they explained. “As well as being more costly and not without complications; the worst of which is if the uterus has burst spilling pus into the abdomen.”

At Vetent Darfield, whether a bitch is six months old or ten years old, they have a set price for routine spaying, a heavily discounted procedure which costs about $300 for a small dog and up to $450 for a 50kg

dog, fully inclusive for the procedure.

Obviously the main reason for getting a bitch spayed is to prevent pregnancy, but another good reason is that if spaying is done within the first year, she is extremely unlikely to develop mammary cancer when she is older.

“We commonly see mammary tumours in older un-spayed bitches and the surgery required can be extensive and with a reasonably high recurrence rate.

As a vet I would much prefer to do a routine de-sexing surgery in a younger dog than be faced with a life threatening condition later in life. If you have a middle aged dog that hasn’t been spayed I would urge you to get it done.” they concluded.

Nearly 1,000 Canterbury secondary school students representing thirty schools turned out for the annual University of Canterbury (UC) Educational Mud Run on Sunday, June 17th at the Motukarara Racecourse.

This year saw a large Selwyn contingent competing, with students from around the area attending the event and joining in the fun.

The UC Education Mud Run was begun in June 2011 after the earthquakes damaged, or destroyed, many of the sporting facilities and recreation areas

Organisers recognised that there was a risk of lack of participation in the Province’s youth. “We saw an opportunity, through a different kind of event, to reach out to secondary school students and motivate them to set a goal,” Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon explained.

During the run students have an opportunity to clamber through cold muddy sludge, run through creeks and crawl tunnels. The students end the race with mud caking their body from head to toe, cold and wet, but generally with a huge smile.

Each year, there is the ‘Best Dressed Parade’ with up to 250 teams of students lining up before the race to showcase their crazy costumes for a shot at the title. This year four Year 13 students from Lincoln High School took the honour, defending their title after winning as Year 9 and Year 12 students.

One of the Darfield High School teams took first place in the race for the girls, while St Thomas of Canterbury College had the win for the boys. A mixed team from West Melton won their division.

To the Editors: Before people comment on the sale of the Darfield houses by saying that there have been houses sold in the former Council areas of Ellesmere and Paparua and the money has gone to the consolidated fund of the Council, so why should Malvern expect to retain the money from the sale of their houses. There is no argument with that except that there has been at least eight houses from the Malvern area sold already with the money going to the consolidated fund.

These particular houses were built for a reason and the people were rated specifically for that reason to pay for the houses.

Under the public Works Act if a property is acquired for a specific reason and that reason is no longer applicable, the property has to be offered to the original owners.

In the case of the houses, the Malvern Council did not buy the houses off the owners, but rated its community to pay for them; now that the houses are no longer required, the money taken from those ratepayers should be returned to them, at today’s values.

A precedent has been set in legislation and should apply to these houses.

Finally it would be nice to have our three elected members support those who elected them.

She was nominated twice, by both Clare Clatworthy and Nicky Dance because Sarah has suffered ill health for some time.

Nominator Clare presented the quilt to Sarah, who was very happy to receive it.

“There were many nominations and it was very difficult to choose a recipient,” said a spokesperson for the Malvern Material Girls. “We have decided to make several more quilts, which will be given to other nom in ee s a s they are completed,” they concluded.

This year Darfield Primary School played host for the annual Malvern Primary School Speech and Poetry competition.

As the Darfield Primary School hall was being used for junior classrooms (while new ones were under construction), Darfield High kindly offered the use of their premises.

Dunsandel Primary School children were captivated by tales of ‘exploding cowsheds, wayward pigs and slithery eels like slippery wet paint’, during a visit from Oxford-based author Jennifer Somervell.

Somervell Teachers at the school, Georgina Dekker and Toni Barns said, “we had an absolute blast!

This was a wonderful session, practical, inspiring and very real for our country kids. Totally Kiwi!”

The teachers reported that the children liked how the stories were true and based on real events.

“The stories really resonated with these rural children,”

Jennifer said. “The boys just came alive, they loved that my dad actually blew up a cowshed!”

Jennifer shared the inspiration behind the series and also spent time talking about the atrisk native longfin eel.

Co-authored with Jennifer’s sister-illustrator, Margery Fern, Fern the series is based on their childhood adventures growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s on the family dairy farm.

The successful Responsible Business Awards were run as a Selwyn wide project for the first time, last year. Running the Awards throughout the District enabled some new Awards to be introduced, alongside the smaller area Trophies that have been traditionally awarded.

“The awards ceremony held in the Rolleston Lounge at the Community Centre was an enjoyable and informative occasion that really celebrated the excellent sustainable and community practices that are being undertaken by the businesses of Selwyn,” reported Dave Fitzjohn, Project Manager, Lincoln Envirotown Trust.

“Having businesses from all over, meant that there were more ideas showcased that could be widely celebrated and shared,” he added.

This year (2018) is to be one without any survey or awards, as these will now take place every two years. Instead Lincoln Envirotown feels fortunate to have recruited the services of Rex Verity to coordinate a

different type of project this year. Rex currently owns Darfield Eco Garden Centre, but has also worked on many initiatives that have related to community and environmental issues. He is now in the process of contacting the businesses of Selwyn to seek their participation in a Selwyn Responsible Business Network.

Rex will discuss the form this participation will take and the aims of the group.

“The most significant developments will be around establishing means of providing information to businesses about sustainable practices and community involvement,” Dave explained, “and more importantly the sharing of ideas.”

Three social events are planned for later in the year which will feature guest speakers and discussions amongst the business community.

“A Facebook Group has already been opened and businesses are encouraged to join,” Dave added.

The Courtenay A & P Association Committee are busy already, preparing for their next Show in November.

A series of free workshops are being held in the Kirwee Hall, so that entrants can be better prepared for the competition on the day.

The Association have recently held their first workshop for the Flower Section. Last year’s Judge Dave Taylor, Taylor and rose expert Bill Girl demonstrated pruning to achieve the best blooms for the Show, and answered questions about what the judges are looking for.

The next workshop will be for the Fruit and Vegetable Section, on July 1st.

They are also excited to announce they are holding the first ever workshop for children to learn how to raise, care for

and train a pet lamb, or calf with the goal of entering it in the November Show.

In the past, many local children lived on sheep farms, however with so many of the local population now in the area’s towns and villages, many youngsters, and their parents, don’t have access to farm animals, and do not know how to take care of, and train one.

The committee’s goal is to teach any interested children, and their parents/caregivers, what is involved and to encourage and support them, if they choose to go ahead with this!

Local sheep farmer Joe Catherwood and Show President and cattle expert, Jane Jenkins have kindly volunteered to run this free workshop for children and their parents or caregivers, on Sunday, July 8th.

The goals of the Association are to promote Agricultural and Pastoral issues in their community and encourage friendly competition. The committee see these workshops as a great opportunity to teach both children and adults about raising the best animals and produce.

In November last year Colin Guild, President of the Malvern Guild Farmers’ Veterinary Club Incorporated wrote to members advising them of a forthcoming Special General Meeting to outline their resolution to wind up the ‘Club’ and register it as a Charitable Trust.

The Malvern Farmers’ Veterinary Club Incorporated was founded in 1952 when many such clubs were established throughout New Zealand to provide veterinary services to their local districts.

They were granted tax free status in the form of an incorporated society.

The Club operated successfully for many years, with clinics in Darfield and Oxford, and was run by an elected Executive which employed the staff and managed the business. However from around the years 199899, the Club began to incur financial losses. The reasons were varied, but the Executive reacted decisively purchasing land in Darfield and Oxford and transitioned the Club to a contracted practice model. This process went on for a number of years and involved new clinics in Darfield and Oxford, plus upgraded rental property in

The reasons for the Club’s proposed change in status are now: 1. Tax Free Status - The Club is now a landlord collecting rent and running the business of renting property, so the Incorporated tax free status is totally inappropriate; however a charitable trust can remain tax free.

2. Club Rules - The Club’s rules, as currently written, are outmoded, and would have to be totally rewritten if the Club were to continue in its current form.

3. Membership - Changes in farming throughout the district, makes it difficult to maintain accurate membership records under contract veterinary practices.

4. Winding Up - The Club’s rules state that if the Club is wound up, the assets of the Club must be devoted to charitable or educational purposes in the district. The rules specifically

state that no part of the Club’s assets may be applied for the private pecuniary profit of any member or ex-member of the Club.

5. Charitable Benefits to the Districts - After careful consideration the Executive has the view that the original objective of bringing a veterinary service to the districts has been achieved. It is therefore appropriate the income generated be distributed to the districts for the benefit of the rural community.

6. Wealth Accumulation - plans for its use in the future.

The Executive proposes winding up the Club, and transferring the Club’s assets to the Charitable Trust (once the Club’s final bills are paid).

Governed by the Trust deed, it is proposed that twice a year, the Trust would consider applications from community groups and individuals living in, or connected with, the districts, and make grants for charitable purposes (specifically in the areas of education and social, community and family welfare).

The first Trustees will be the Executive of the Club and two standard funding rounds will operate per year.

The Executive intends that the Charitable Trust will have a website, where people can find out more about the Trust’s activities and learn how to access grant funding. They would also like to hear from anyone who can assist with any historical information in regard to Malvern Farmers Veterinary Club.

ALPHA IN HEI HEI Christianity - What’s it all about?

On Friday, June 8th around ninety ex-Malvern Women’s Hockey players gathered at the Darfield Recreational Centre for lunch, and a chat to reminisce on the good old days of fun and competition.

As those attending moved through the foyer picking up their name tags, and raffle tickets, all that could be heard were excited greetings flowing from one person to another.

Once everyone was seated and the chatter had quietened down

a little, Heather Mitchell was able to welcome everybody, and give an outline, of what was to follow.

Special mention was made of all those who were unable to be there on the day. One such person was the late Jenny Pearson who is to have a plaque made in memory of all the work she did for hockey, and players, in the Malvern area.

were unsure what to do with, they could leave it with Heather or Marj White. It was reported that it would be all stored together in a container, to be later placed in an appropriate place for safe keeping.

Jeanette Adams presented Heather and Marj with lovely posies of flowers for making the day possible.

An assortment of finger food was then shared by all, following which the raffle was drawn, with prizewinners obviously excited to have their numbers drawn.

Following the drawing of the raffle, Marj thanked everyone for making the effort to come along and thanked all who had helped during the day. She finally wished all a safe journey home - many with a smile on their face, especially as they left with a plate of ‘goodies’ for tea!

The day was certainly, “one to remember”.
