Darfield Artweek has been a celebration of art in the local area for over thirty-five years.

This year’s Artweek is currently in full swing (until Sunday October 15th) with over 300 artworks on display from some 120 artists; something for everyone to enjoy. Artweek judge Jan Robertson, Robertson certainly had her work cut out when selecting the winner from each category.

Darfield Art Week is exhibiting in three locations: Darfield Recreation Centre, Selwyn Gallery, and the Darfield Library.

Award-winning singer songwriter Mel Parsons will finish her ‘Across the Ditch’ tour of New Zealand and Australia at the Hororata Hall on Saturday, October 14th. Mel has been to ur i ng w it h w e l l - lov ed Australian artist Liz Stringer, Stringer and together the duo have pe rfo rm e d in Ad e l ai d e, Melbourne and various music halls throughout New South Wales before kicking off the NZ leg of the tour in Geraldine on October 5th. Mel is based in the Selwyn district when not on the road and is excited about finishing up in Hororata. “I have a strong family connection to the area - my Dad grew up on a farm on Downs Road. I have played a few shows in the Hororata Hall over the years, it’s a magic atmosphere and so great to come and perform in a community where I have a lot of

friends and family connections,” she said. Mel is also looking forward to introducing audiences to her Australian touring companion. “Liz is brilliant live, she’s an amazing guitarist, has a voice to die for and a very dry sense of humour.

Hororata Golf Club held an extremely successful golf event on October, 4th when they opened up the Club to younger golfers.

There were 53 eager juniors keen to try their hand at golf, as well as some accompanying Mums also hitting golf balls. The day was made even more entertaining by the support of Canterbury Golf, and the use of their SNAG (Starting New At Golf) gear (the inflatable driving range was lots of fun) which was a huge success.

The children also enjoyed a yummy sausage sizzle and some sweet-treat lollies that were on offer as well.

I have been helping clients change their thinking and their behaviours for many years. My NLP coaching and experience working at Anxiety Support Canterbury, Mental Health Advocacy and Peer Support and Canterbury Clinical Network has allowed hundreds of people to change their lives for the better.

I am constantly involved in professional development and in June this year I completed my Diploma in Child and Adolescent Psychology. This was a great thrill after studying part-time for a number of years. I have felt that this really built on my skills and knowledge as a trained teacher and I am feeling confident and enthusiastic about the work I do with children and young adults.

Recently I have also undertaken and completed a Certificate in Nutrition. This has enabled me to really round out my coaching skills with a sensible and holistic approach to health and wellness coaching.

I have become more and more fascinated by the link between brain and body and there is much exciting research going on in this area. So often my clients feel their mental skills and health are compromised by their diet or physical health. It is a huge thrill to feel I can now enable them to instigate any changes they want or need to make in their lifestyle in a way that supports all of their goals.

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair, held annually on Labour Day, is a chance to unwind, enjoy some easy time with family and friends, pick up a bargain and enter into a little friendly competition.

“I love seeing children freely run around the grounds, challenging each other in the kid’s races, jumping on fair rides and working out how to make their pocket money go further,” Evie Cookson, one of the many volunteers for the day, commented.

Each year a new theme is selected for the annual Creative Kids’ Competition and this year it’s ‘Water Works’. Competitors are asked how and what water means to them! It could be anything from making a jelly, fish icing on a cake, or building a water race.

“If photography is more of interest to your child then there is a special photo competition as well,” Evie added.

The Fair also features a large number of market stalls whose holders focus on offering a wide range of local foods, produce, products and crafts. There are always bargains to be found in the Parish run White Elephant and this fills the entire stables at the Hororata Domain. Or

maybe it’s the Garden Plant and Fresh Produce stall that’s of interest. While the local favourite for many is always the ‘Country Auction’, and this kicks off at 11.30am.

Those attending are encouraged to have a family lunch by way of the Parish barbecue which offers freshly made bacon sandwiches and burgers, or alternatively folk can choose to just sit down and listen to the live music.

“The Spring Fair is the biggest annual fundraiser for the Hororata Parish, but more than that is the goal of continuing the rural tradition and making everyon e i n ou r loca l community, or from further afield, welcome,” Evie said.

“For some, the Fair remains a place to enjoy ‘food on a stick’, to giggle yourself silly in the bouncy castle, and have some wholesome fun,” added Jenni Carter the Hororata Parish Vicar. “The heart of the Fair, is you and we really hope to see everyone there,” she encouraged.

On Sunday, October 29th the Friends of Darfield Hospital, together with the Nurse Manager and her Staff, plan to hold an Open Afternoon to celebrate the year of the ninetieth Anniversary of the opening of the hospital, which took place on May 27th, 1927.

In the early 1920’s funds were made available to establish maternity hospitals in rural Canterbury. At that time the wider district comprised the counties of Selwyn, Malvern and Tawera.

Representatives of each county met with the Finance Committee of the then North Canterbury Hospital Board, to propose that a maternity hospital be built in Darfield. It was to provide four maternity beds and two further beds for emergency purposes.

The need for a maternity unit was based on the fact that in 1923 there were 205 births in the district, of which 103 were handled by the resident doctor, the remainder had to travel to Christchurch because of the lack of proper maternity home accommodation, or a specialist nurse.

Final consent for the building to proceed was received in October 1926, and the Hospital was opened on May 27th 1927 by Mrs McMillan, McMillan the wife of Mr David McMillan the representative of the three counties on the Hospital Board. He worked hard to promote the need for the hospital among his colleagues on the Board, and continued in this role until 1947. The Friends of the Hospital are particularly pleased, that David’s granddaughter Bryony McMillan, McMillan will be joining in with the celebration. It is noteworthy also that Bryony’s father, who was also named David, David was the hospital’s first resident doctor.

The Open Afternoon will be held from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. The hospital building will be open from 1.30pm to 3pm enabling visitors to take a walk through some sections of the building, after which a short formal ceremony will be held to mark this special occasion. During the afternoon there will be musical entertainment, stalls selling cakes, books and plants, an auction for a few items, and afternoon tea will be available. In the event of very wet weather, the Darfield Primary School Hall will be used for some of the activities.

The West Melton St Paul’s Garden tour is to be held on Sunday, November 12th, with a diverse selection of ten beautiful gardens on show. The gardens range from small, town sized gardens, through to medium sized cottage/formal type gardens and larger gardens showcasing a variety of rhododendrons, rambling beds of flowering perennials and established trees. The gardens on the tour include well manicured examples, along with gardens based on less formal structures. Recently, local man, Donald Reid travelled to Auckland to volunteer at the Mckayson New Zealand Women’s Golf Open.

The tournament, which was held at the new Windross Farm Golf Course from September, 28th to October 2nd, was this country’s first entry into the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour.

Donald, has spent the last ten years volunteering at local and national golf events, however this was his biggest event to date.

This tournament was an extra special one for him as it had a large number of international players involved.

“I was very pleased with the

viewing advantage from the sideline which enabled me to clearly see all the play, including our very own Lydia Ko, Ko along with Brooke Henderson the tournament winner from Canada, and Daniellia Hwang from USA,” Donald said.

“The highlight for me was seeing Steve Williams, who was the caddie for Daniellia.”

When the TAANZ National Travel Industry Awards took place in the Auckland Sky City Convention Centre on Saturday, September 30th, Helloworld Rolleston had good reason to celebrate their success. On the weekend of September, 30th to October, 1st, Darfield High School students, Jacob Spence, Brogan Baldwin, and Hunter Benbow, Benbow travelled to Palmerston North to compete in the Target Shooting New Zealand (TSNZ) Inter-Secondary Schools Inter-Island match.

The event saw twenty-one secondary schools from throughout New Zealand competing, with Darfield High School coming in fifth overall place.

Brogan had an amazing weekend, which resulted in her being placed third overall. Jason also had a great weekend and came in twenty-second, out of sixty-six shooters. Brogan and Jacob were also both selected for the South Island team and that team went on to beat the North Island team.

Brogan skills saw her selected for the New Zealand team to shoot against British schools in a postal shoot to be held later this year. This is the event that all the competitors were striving for. The shooters selected for the New Zealand team receive medals and a pennant that both schools and shooters prize highly.

Hunter came down with a cold for the second year in a row on

shoot day, so was frustrated to be having an off-day but picked it up on the Sunday in the plate match to shoot very well.

Unfortunately neither his or Jacob's team took the plate.

This was Jacob’s first national event and he performed extremely well under some serious pressure in the competition.

“The trip was well worth the effort and our team members were a delight to coach and spot for,” said Craig Benbow, President of Darfield Smallbore Rifle Club.

“We thank the Malvern Community Board for assisting us with some of the travel costs to attend the event,” he concluded.

A dull day with a light southerly breeze greeted the thirty nine shooters in the Waimak 100.

The field included sixteen who also competed at Mead-Te Pirita in April and qualified for the Twin Rivers Trophy.

With usual Darfield efficiency the first targets were thrown at the 10am start time and despite the conditions a few possibles were registered for the first 25 targets.

Next up was the 50 target prize match. Just a single possible was achieved - although a few managed a one-off result. A couple of shoot-offs would be required to sort out the placings.

With plenty of time before afternoon tea shooters pushed ahead with the last round. A slight improvement in the conditions and the possibles increased with ten scored.

“Not exactly a record breaker,” Bevan Brown of the Darfield Gun Club reported.

Afternoon tea was taken and following that the shoot-offs began.

Firstly the Waimak High Over All, Chris Helem and Ben Sharp contesting, with Chris outlasting Ben to take HOA and Ben 1st A Grade. Derek Gane 1st B and Stewart Askey 1st C. The 50 tgt shoot was a clear win for Chris in A grade with Duncan Jefferis and Paul Templeton emerging from the shoot-off for the minor placings.

B Grade saw James Currie outlast Derek Gane for the top placing with Brent Whitefield a target behind.

C Grade was sorted off the gun

The whole Greendale School ready for their production.

A large crowd of family and friends gathered on September, 19th at Greendale Community Hall to watch the Greendale School’s stage production ‘Joseph The Favourite’.

The play, which was written early in Term 3 by Year 6 students, Juliet Ridgen and Olivia Adams, came about after the whole school participated in an inquiry about Ancient Egypt.

Having had their interest piqued the two girls then used their new found knowledge to write a play in which the whole school could participate.

The production was based around Joseph And The Technicolour Dreamcoat, to which the girls added their own unique flair.

The girls included the songs

‘Jacob and Sons’, and ‘Joseph's Coat’, both from the original Joseph And The Technicolour Dreamcoat musical, which the performers sang proudly with enthusiasm.

The show was a whole school production with some students and teachers playing in the orchestra and the whole school singing.

A huge hit and a highlight of the production was an Egyptian version of Elvis’s ‘Jailhouse Rock’, ending with Dave Dobbyn’s ‘Welcome home’.

Greendale School is keen to have an ongoing relationship with Downer as a large number of their students have irrigation water pipe installed on their properties, or nearby.

On Friday, September 29th and Saturday 30th the Malvern Squash Club’s annual Club Championships took place in Darfield.

It was a well-attended event with a number of categories that gave all members of the Club the chance to compete; rekindling old (friendly) rivals and creating new ones.

Friday night’s first round matches saw all competitors playing at least once. Both of the Club’s courts were utilised, full time, from 5pm till late accommodating all the play.

The Club also provided hot food for everyone; competitors and supporters alike.

“Saturday was the business end of the competition and a time

for the cream of the Club to rise to the top,” commented Andrew McLeod, Squash Club spokesperson.

“This year’s Champs went all day on Saturday and those who stayed to watch and socialise were rewarded with some fantastic squash, plus a great dinner, again provided by some Club members, as well as the Club bar.

“It was also an opportunity for the Club to reward members for their continued support, eg Jacob Horrey who won the Bill Berry trophy for services to coaching throughout the season,” Andrew said.

The 2017 South Island Primary Rugby Tournament was held in Dunedin from Sunday, October 1st through until Tuesday, October 3rd.

A few local players attended, playing either in the Canterbury Country U48kg, Canterbury Country U65kg or Canterbury Metro U65kg teams.

The Canterbury Country U48kg team ended up winning the tournament in their weight division which left coaches Simon Moriarty (Rolleston), Gary Michael (Dunsandel) and Manager Jason Keno

(Rolleston) absolutely over the moon.

Tom Ruwhiu from Kirwee had an outstanding tournament and was selected, at the end, for the South Island U48kg Tournament Team.

The Canterbury Country U65kg team won the Fair Play Trophy for their division, a testament to the great sportsmanship shown during the Tournament.

Callum Summerfield from West Melton captained the team and was selected in the South Island U65kg Tournament team, likewise Hunter Adam from

Flynn Topham, captain of Canterbury Metro U65kg Team.

Dunsandel. Beau Gibbs from Oxford was selected as the Player’s Player for this team - a big honour to be chosen as the most respected player by your own team members.

Canterbury Metro U65kg team was captained by Flynn Topham of Kirwee - returning for the end of the season after being injured.
