On Friday, January 20th the combined efforts of the Malvern Bowling Clubs came together to raise a massive $2,430 for The Malvern Cancer Support Group.

T he s uppor t gro up i s enormously grateful to Nancy Hayton, Hayton Patron of Malvern Bowls for sponsoring this event and to the Darfield Bowling Club for hosting it.

“It was such a lot of fun and a great idea for a fundraiser,” enthused Malvern Cancer Support Group spokesperson Elaine Guy. Guy “It was just amazing!

“A huge amount of work was done before the event, and behind the scenes, by a fabulous group of people. In particular thanks must go to Margaret Gray and Pat Maxwell who managed to pull it all together, even Mother Nature came to the party as the sun shone on us.”

The day took the format of a fun filled afternoon for the Malvern community to join together and enjoy lawn bowling games.

“Newcomers, children and experienced bowlers all took to

the green for a relaxed and enjoyable opportunity to show their skills and impart their bowling knowledge to a greater or lesser (in my case!) extent,” laughed Elaine. “This was followed by a wonderful afternoon tea that was provided by the Darfield, Coalgate, Kirwee and West Melton Bowling Club members.”

In the preceding weeks both Margaret and Pat had spent the days canvassing the Malvern community businesses for donations for a raffle and the generosity shown was both exceptional and humbling.

There were approximately one hundred raffle prizes drawn on the day.

this event will mainly be used to help them support affected families with a driving service to oncology appointments; for the duration of their treatments.

“We also provide information and support to families, baking and grocery aid,” Elaine added.” Amongst other additional things our members also help with the sewing and knitting of turbans for those

who may need them. The money raised from this fundraiser is invaluable. ”The Malvern Cancer Support Group cannot thank enough the combined Malvern Bowling Clubs for their incredible support and the Malvern community who joined us on the day, it is so much appreciated,” Elaine concluded.

The Darfield Summer of fun Community Country Picnic will take place on Monday February 6th (Waitangi Day) from 10:30am - 3pm, with a fun, relaxing atmosphere to capture and celebrate all the good things about the Malvern Community.

Two Rivers Community Trust are hosting the event and have organised a variety of fun activities for everyone to enjoy and all for free! This includes bouncy castles, Pedalmania with their crazy bikes, pony rides, petting zoo, gumboot throwing and much more.

Darfield Market will be onsite with a selection of their stalls including plants, jewellery, food and baking. They will be joined by various talented locals selling a selection of amazing items.

There will be a barbecue with a sausage sizzle and Kiwi burgers to celebrate Waitangi Day, along with other food stalls selling bacon rolls, baking, watermelon, summery desserts and candy floss, along with fresh coffee and Devonshire Teas.

Between 12pm and 1pm there will be the opportunity to head over to the comfy picnic area andenjoy a picnic brought from home, or enjoy food purchased from the stalls while listening to local storyteller and puppeteer, Liz Weir.

Malvern’s local services will also

join in - St John will have their First Response vehicle there for folk to climb aboard, PC Andy will pop in around his day duties and to complete the trio, the Darfield Volunteer Fire Service will arrive with their well loved vintage fire engine for rides (and a lolly scramble!).

Other local groups will be in attendance with displays and information including Selwyn Gets Ready. The Darfield Plunket Toy Library will offer ride on and outdoor toys to have a go on!

Darfield library will display some of their large selection of books, while the Selwyn Parenting Network will bring some interactive activities, including having a go at some flax weaving. All of this, plus country dress ups and photographs, Lego, an afternoon game of backyard Kiwi cricket and free sunscreen makes for a fabulous day out. Organisers look forward to welcoming the community to the day.

For anyone wanting to join in on the action before the event, there are scarecrow colouring competition sheets available at the Darfield Library. Place completed entries into the box at the Library to be in for a prize!

The ex-mayor of Selwyn Kelvin Coe has been recognised in the 2017 New Year Honours list for his commitment and services to local government. He received the Order of Merit for Services To Local Government.

Kelvin, who served three terms as Mayor of the Selwyn District Council, had previously been a Councillor for the Ellesmere Ward from 1991 to 2007, as well as Selwyn Deputy Mayor from 2004 to 2007.

Kelvin led the Selwyn district through the aftermath of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. He contributed to the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy Implementation Committee, the Canterbury Earthquake Commission, CERA’s Recovery Strategy Advisory Committee and the Advisory Board for the Transition. He also chaired the Canterbury Regional Civil Defence Committee. Kelvin led the district through a major housing expansion as thousands of people moved out of Christchurch City seeking accommodation, and opened up Council premises to house the displaced Commissioners and staff of Environment Canterbury.

He was one of the Mayors who originally worked on the Canterbury Water Management Strategy, and has been one of its leading advocates. Kelvin has held a range of leadership positions within various community organisations - he has been a member of St John’s Area Committee for nearly fift ee n ye ar s and h as contributed to fundraising activities and engaging with major sponsors; has been involved with Federated Farmers for more than forty years, including time as Provincial President of the North Canterbury branch from 1991 to 1994.

When Darfield’s Kylie Schnell lines up for the Coast to Coast on February 10th, not only will she face the extreme challenge of the event, but also she’ll face another challenge - that of her need to monitor her health.

Seventeen year old Kylie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes three years ago and during the Coast to Coast will need to regularly check her blood glucose levels to make sure they aren’t too high or too low.

Displaying a determination to not let her condition limit her participation, Kylie feels the event is an opportunity to show other young people with diabetes that it shouldn’t hold them back.

Kylie, a pupil at Darfield High School, has won her Coast to Coast entry fees, after being one of two successful applicants in the Christchurch City Council’s Kathmandu Coast to Coast free entry completion.

To be successful in the competition Kylie submitted a compelling argument about her desire to compete and commented that she had watched the iconic event for years - with entry to it always on her ’bucket-list’.

Kylie is no stranger to sporting achievement though - diabetes or no diabetes - and commented that it was a case of, “getting your head around it and learning to manage it effectively”. She ran her first half marathon last year and has taken part in the Spring Challenge women’s team adventure race for the past two

“I’m now training six days a week for this, my first solo event and while I love kayaking and I’m confident on my bike, I feel the mountain run will be the biggest challenge.

“My goal is to get to the finish line this year and if it all goes to plan, I’ll do it next year and try and beat my time,” Kylie said.

Kylie’s mum Janelle Schnell, Schnell who is also a keen multi-sport competitor, added that most people have heard about Type 2 diabetes, which can be triggered by diet and lifestyle factors, but many don’t understand Type 1 diabetes.

This disease is an auto-immune condition where the body attacks the cells that produce insulin,” she added.

While Janelle understandably has some concerns about Kylie competing, she fully supports her and shares the same view

as her daughter, that of not letting diabetes rule your life.

Kylie was diagnosed as a fourteen-year old after feeling thirsty and tired and thinking she might have the flu. After an ambulance trip to hospital, where she spent some time, she now manages the disease herself, with assistance from Christchurch Hospital's Diabetes Service, and has to inject insulin four times a day. During the Coast to Coast Kylie will carry test kits to check her glucose levels at transition stages, and have food with her.

Family support on the side-line will keep her cheered on and offer any assistance if required.

Kylie has plans for a career in nursing when she finishes school; an area in which she hopes to be able to help others suffering from the same condition.

There were definitely a few proud parent moments for Darfield’s Linda and Richard Gosling as they celebrated the achievements of all three of their high achieving sons recently.

Firstly their nineteen year old son, Aircraftman George A. D. Gosling was the winner of the Hawea Shield, which is presented to the best male recruit in Physical Education and Recreational Training as part of the 16/03 Command and Recruit Training Course for the Royal New Zealand Airforce at the RNZAF Base at Woodbourne.

George, who is studying to be an avionics technician, is also hoping to play rugby 7’s and 15’s for the Airforce and is currently in their touch rugby inter-base team.

“George is also a keen skier and recreational soccer player, and rather hoping to represent the Airforce in as many areas of sport that he can,” explained his mum Linda.

Meanwhile George’s younger brother Noah was making his mark on the rugby stage winning the JAB Player of the year, at Darfield’s RFC. “He had an amazing season playing for Malvern U16, Ellesmere and Canterbury Country, and also plays U17 basketball at school,” Linda added.

The youngest of the three Gosling boys, is Oscar.

Oscar He’s a keen hockey player (won the year 7/8 most improved hockey player at Darfield High School) but his true success has been on the academic front. Oscar was presented with the Creed Brothers award for the highest academic pupil in year 7 at DHS, along with individual awards in English, Maths

He also had a very successful acting year, having played ’Sherlock’ in the DHS junior production of ‘Mr Scrooge’ and ‘The Artful Dodger; in the Kirwee Players production of ‘Oliver’.”

Mermaid’ due to be staged in April.

The UK Gosling family moved to Darfield eight years ago and, “we just love it”, enthused Linda. “It’s a wonderful and caring community and we feel lucky to have made the right choice of location to live. As parents to the boys, both Richard and I have had our fair share of the ups and downs of parenting but can honestly say we are extremely proud of all three of our diverse lads. We want to give a big shout out to N ew Z ea l an d a nd t he opportunities our boys have had here,” Linda concluded.

As in other areas of New Zealand, the number of Selwyn motorists over the age of sixty is expected to increase in the future.

Coordinator Ngaire Tinning commented that Confident Driving courses are a fun and easy way for residents over sixty to refresh their driving and road rule knowledge and also look at ways to plan how their driving can be safer on the road.

"We are really pleased to be able to offer these free courses and workshops with support from Age Concern and our volunteers. As Selwyn is a rural area, driving is important for older people to be able to access local services and keep connected to family and

friends. Previous workshops have proven very popular and valuable to assist people to be able to continue to drive safely on our roads," Ngaire added.

Selwyn District Council and Age Concern offer the Confident Driving Course to help older drivers remain confident on the road and encourage an increased awareness of the traffic environment and other road users. The course covers road rules, planning car trips, using safe routes and when to drive to avoid peak traffic times. It is designed to be thought prov oki ng, i nformat ive, enjoyable and informal. There are no tests or exams and participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Morning tea and lunch is provided for participants booked to attend.

Five Confident Driving courses will be offered at: • Darfield Tues, Feb 4th • Rolleston Mon, Feb 20th • Lincoln Wed, March 1st • Prebbleton Wed, March 15th • Leeston Wed, March 29th.

The Council and local volunteers can also offer a free Carfit check for mature drivers which checks a car’s safety features with the driver.

The check is carried out by trained volunteers with an occupational therapist, and looks at mirrors, seatbelt, seat and steering wheel position, plus other car safety features.

The check takes around twenty minutes.

When Sheffield farmer Malcolm (Mac) Paterson was admitted to hospital for lengthy postoperative convalescence, it became clear that it was time to sell-up the family property and start a new life chapter.

The land on Tramway Road, Sheffield duly changed hands, with a possession date of late July 2016. Like most men/ farmers/contractors the farm’s yard was a veritable treasure trove of things that had been accumulated over the long years of the Paterson family’s tenure.

Definitely not the least of which was Mac’s extensive collection of eleven, vintage, Case tractors.

The task of clearing/selling various farm machinery, tools and cars got underway, but prospective purchasers for the vintage tractor collection were sadly few and far between.

Son George recalled making the acquaintance of a representative of the Richardson Transport Museum in Invercargill and got in contact with him. Following a viewing of the tractors, and a discussion with the Museum’s curator, a sale was made and it was planned that the tractors were to head to a new home in Southland.

The possession date for the new owners to take over the property was looming, before the final departure of the eleven tractors eventually took place - much to the relief of the whole Paterson family. Daughter Sally had the camera at the ready as a crane e f f or t l e s s l y l i ft e d , t h e n manoeuvered the tractors onto a large truck and its trailers for their journey down the gravel road and out on to the highway.

Mac’s wife Jane Paterson has compiled an extensive booklet of photos and descriptions covering the history of the collection and commented: “This

From Monday January 30th, over 8,000 Selwyn children will be travelling to school.

Selwyn School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler is reminding drivers to watch out for children and slow down near schools, early childhood centres and school buses. Local children will be travelling to school by bus, bike, car, scooter and on foot.

“Children can dart out onto the road unexpectedly. Drivers need to slow down and be extra cautious near schools and early childhood centres, and remember that 20 kilometres per hour is the speed limit past a school bus that has stopped to let children on or off,” Stephanie said.

“The safety of all children is paramount,” commented Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police. “Police will be patrolling outside schools and pre-schools so as to reduce the risk posed by speeding vehicles, illegal parking and dangerous driving manoeuvres whilst everyone gets used to children being back at school.”

Parents and caregivers also need to be mindful of their own driving when dropping off or picking up children.

“From observation I have seen drivers double parking, parking over driveways and footpaths and parking on yellow lines near crossings and intersections,” Stephanie added. “Taking the shortest route is not always the safest option for your kids or other children.”

School travel safety tips: • Reduce speed around children • Park well back from crossings and intersections so children can be seen • Ensure children walking, scootering or biking wear their safety vest to help them be seen • If dropping children off by car, ensure they get out on the footpath side of the car • Encourage children to use crossing points and kea crossings and always look out for vehicles in driveways • Teach children to cross roads safely and to judge safe

distances.

Selwyn District Council has received full repayment of its loan to Central Plains Water Limited.

In November 2015 the Council approved a loan of up to $8 million to Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL), following public consultation through an amended Long-Term Plan process.

Subsequently, Central Plains Water progressively drew down a total principal of $6.26 million, which was repaid in full this week along with interest of $188,000.

The loan was provided by the Council to assist with design work on Stage Two of the Central Plains Water scheme.

Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton said the prompt repayment of

the loan confirms that the Council’s backing for the scheme has been well-founded.

“Throughout our involvement with this project the Council has been confident about supporting the scheme, on the strength of the potential returns to the district,” Sam commented.

“The scheme will bring significant benefits to the wider Selwyn community through increased economic activity as well the creation of new jobs both on farms and within related industries. There are also significant environmental gains to be made, as the scheme replaces groundwater with surface water irrigation from alpine sources.”

Scottish duo ‘Saltire’ - David Vernon and Alex Hodgson - the headline act for the Scottish Military Tattoo, will perform in Hororata for one night only on Thursday February 2nd at the Hororata Hall. The concert promises an evening of raucous entertainment for the whole family and with free entry this is sure to be a great way to kick off 2017.

“The Scottish Military Tattoo will be in Christchurch on February 4th, and the promoters of this event wanted somewhere for Saltire to have a warm up show and as Hororata has become known to enjoy anything ‘Scottish’, from whisky to highland games, it was the obvious venue,” explained Cindy Driscoll, Driscoll Projects’ Manager for the Hororata Community Trust.

Saltire promises to be heaps of fun and highly entertaining.

Both performers bring their own unique personalities to the stage. Edinburgh based virtuoso accordionist David Vernon has performed at musical events and festivals all over the world. David appears

on twenty three CDs and can be seen playing in the Robert Duvall movie “A Shot at Glory”.

He is also a ceremonial Bagpiper.

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Alex Hodgson has made two CDs and has performed for the Queen at the Ghillie Ball at Balmoral. His music is distinctively Scottish, exhibiting both a charm and humour, as well as a keen love

Ollie undertook an Apprenticeship of Mechanical Engineering through Martin Hydraulics in Hornby, during the three and a half years he was there. This company largely undertook machining, fabrication, transport engineering and hydraulic ram re-building. Following this, Ollie spent another year and a half at Fraser Engineering in Rolleston covering mainly industrial, onsite, maintenance, agricultural work, plus truck servicing and repairs.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams commented that she hopes local teachers will apply to the Teacher-led Innovation Fund to get support to trial their ideas on innovative teaching practices.

“I want to see our local teachers supported to try new things in the classroom to raise achievement and the aim of this fund is to do that,” Amy added.

The Teacher-led Innovation

Fund is part of the Government’s $359 million Investing in Educational Success initiative, which recognises that it is the quality of teaching that has the biggest impact for students at school.

“I believe that giving teachers the opportunity to try out new ideas and investigate new practices could lead to some great results in the classroom,”

Amy said.

“Since the fund started, successful projects have been put into practice and shared across schools to help improve learning outcomes for students.”

The Sheffield Garden Club gathered for their evening walkabout on Tuesday, January 17th, at 6pm. A good number met at Margaret McPherson’s park like grounds and admired the lay out, sculptures and magnificent views. It was delightful to move around the areas and take in all the different views, a point of difference was the raised area with the back of it in lawn to form a higher vantage from which to take in the varying vistas.

On to Racecourse Hill and owner Brian Cribb was there to meet us and tell us of the work they had put in to restore the building, as well as moving a church to the property, and making that setting tie in with everything else. Amongst the beautiful old trees and the rock work we could imagine the many gatherings that had been held there over the years. We are thankful that there are folk such as the Cribbs to take on the restoration of such heritage homes.

First to Horndon Street where Helen Creamer showed us around their garden and grounds that have grown and

changed as time and family allowed, and as trees and hedges needed to change.

Alistair kindly had their vintage car out for us to see and dream about.

Elaine Clinton is on a back section and shows the hard work of developing dry land and the plantings on the long driveway that enhance both properties.

Then on to Theckla Barnhill’s which shows a very new garden with rock-water features. By which time the wind had dropped and it was pleasant to be in or outside for a shared supper.

The Darfield Genealogy and Local History Group held their thirtieth Birthday in October, at the Sheffield Hotel. Excellent food and a congenial layout helped the group come together to celebrate many long years.

Present were past and current members, and of course there were many memories of things done over the years. When the Darfield Rugby Club host the forthcoming Farmlands Cup Crusaders/Highlanders game on February 4th it does so with a wealth of history behind it.

The Darfield Rugby Football Club was formed in 1904 and registered with the Malvern Sub Union in 1908. The sub union consisted of teams from Springfield, Sheffield, Darfield, Kirwee, Hororata and the Black Diamonds (Glentunnel).

Most teams struggled for numbers during the First World War, although some sevens were played.

The same applied during the Great Depression, 1925 - 1935 and leading up to the Second World War when a suspension of

regular games was in force.

1945 saw the sub union again organised. Darfield entered two teams, senior and junior. This continued for a few years and by 1949 Darfield Seniors won the Malvern Challenge Shield until 1963 with the exception of 1958. By this time more grades had been added to the competition. Darfield now had a further eight grades with input from other Clubs. With numbers falling from then, 1967 saw the amalgamation of the Malvern and Ellesmere Sub Unions which led to a greater competition.

Darfield have given a good account of themselves in all grades.

The administration of the Club has always been strong. During

In the Premier Division, West Melton One team members, Jeff Mugford, Bob Shorter, Ron McNichol, Bob Burnett and Bill Paekau defeated Darfield One in the final. West Melton Three played in the semi-final of the Senior Division but was unsuccessful in qualifying for the final. In the Senior Reserve Division West Melton Five and West Melton Seven both qualified for the final. The West Melton Seven team of Anne May, Vonnie Clark, Kevin

Sergeant, Roy Daniel and Ken May took the honours.

The Malvern Mixed Pairs were held on January 2nd and 3rd at Darfield and Kirwee. Bill Paekau and Sharon Glassey from West Melton played consistent bowls over the two days to finish runners-up to Gavin Lea and Pat Maxwell from Darfield.

DARFIELD NETBALL CLUB

Selwyn District Council is advising people to take action to prevent fires starting over the coming weeks as strong winds and excess vegetation raise the fire risk in the district.

“Fire activity has been lower than usual over the holiday break as conditions were cool for the time of year,” said Principal Rural Fire Officer Douglas Marshall.

Marshall “H owev er w e ar e now experiencing hotter weather and more wi ndy condit ion s.

Combined with the amount of vegetation in our district as a result of a wet spring, this creates conditions where fires can spread quickly if they are not prevented.”

A number of recent fires have started as a result of electric fences coming into contact with vegetation during windy conditions.

“Property owners can reduce the risk of these types of fires starting by either switching off electric fences - especially in strong winds - or trimming vegetation near fences,” said Douglas.

A restricted fire season is in place in the rural area of Selwyn district. Under the restrictions the only types of outdoor fires allowed are barbeques, drum fires, crop stubble fires and fires where a permit has been issued by the Council.

Crop stubble fires may be more common in coming weeks. There are a number of safety guidelines which must be observed with these fires: • people must be careful to avoid lighting fires when strong or moderate winds are occurring or are forecast • all crop stubble fires may only be lit during daylight and must be out by dark • the fire must be supervised at all times • a fire break of at least ten metres in place is required around the fire • suitable equipment must also be available to extinguish a fire • neighbouring property owners should be advised before burning occurs.

“In hot weather fires can also start as a result of machinery such as lawn mowers being operated.

We would recommend choosing a cooler day to operate machinery and having a water source on hand to extinguish a fire if needed,” Douglas added.

The Club are advising anyone requiring tuition to attend the ten free (there will be a small charge for the lesson notes) learner classes being offered by Crockfords Bridge Club in Christchurch.

The Club does encourage people to take lessons before joining them to play on bridge nights.
