Emily Lauren was very excited to visit with Santa at the ‘Grotto’ in the historical Darfield Jail on Friday, December 16th.

Emily received a gift and enjoyed playing with the musical toys on display. This is a free event for families organised by the Malvern Community Board and with the support of local businesses the children visiting Santa go into the draw for an opportunity to win a wonderful raffle prize. Santa will be available at the ‘Grotto’ from 3 - 6pm until Friday, December 23rd.

It’s been a huge year of changes for the Malvern News - actually the biggest changes in our trading history.

Firstly, our much loved, and very, very cute, little office was required to be removed (for an ‘urgent redevelopment’) from the main street. So vacate we did (as did our neighbours Gnomes Alpine Sports - in similar circumstances) and removed our building as legally required (it’s gone to a kind and loving home).

Thanks to local Real Estate company, Farmlands we were able to take over their lease on 62 South Terrace (next to the Bakery) and establish ourselves in much larger premises. Timely indeed as the News has become busier, and busier and just as you will have noticed the pages in each edition increasing, there has also been an increase in the number of copies printed, as the population of the area grows. We cannot thank our supporting advertisers enough - we know it’s been said before, but there would be no News without this support. Some of our advertisers have been with us since day one (it’s now fourteen years since we (Jan and Jan) bought the Malvern

News), while many others are close to that milestone. We so appreciate your business and by it your indication that we are doing something right - we are a small ‘community’ paper, in our ‘community’ and we hope we know our niche market. We so love bringing the stories of success (the occasional failure!) and the happenings and goingson from the area in which we all live - we value the contributions you send in to us and thoroughly enjoy publishing them.

Another change imposed, and again not of our choosing, were the changes to local deliveries.

With mail services nationwide being altered to three days a week, but Darfield’s postal powers that be choosing to go down a different path - dividing the town’s mail services into six half deliveries, not three full ones, it just wasn’t going to work for the News. We have taken on a different company to oversee our distribution and while there’ve been a few teething problems, we hope they’ve all been ironed out now and we sincerely thank our new deliverers for taking up the

challenge. We know the News is looked forward to by the number of calls to the office if it doesn’t make it into the mailbox at the expected time!

The team at the News work hard to get everything right (yeah we know it doesn’t always happen!) and we really appreciate our staff’s attention and diligence Chevonn Walker (Advertising Assistant), and Lois Haskett (Printing/Distribution) have been with us for some time, and this year we have been joined by Sally Reeves (Editorial Assistant).

We’re all looking forward to a well-earned break over Christmas, as we’re sure all News readers are too.

Do please send us in any holiday snaps (humorous is good embarrassing perhaps not so!) or newsworthy items that could be suitable for publishing in the New Year.

When Christmas Carols in Tussock Square took place last Friday, it saw a group gather to enjoy listening to, and singing along with, many of the old favourites with a new flavour added to some, as well. It was an opportunity to welcome in the Christmas season and the weather while not overly summery, at least stayed fine.

“We kicked off at 7pm and sang a total of ten carols,” said

vocalist for the evening Clare H amilton. amilton “The musical selection included: O Come All Ye Faithful, Joy To The World, Little Drummer Boy, Angels We Have Heard On High, Silent Night, Away In A Manger, O Come O Come Emmanuel, The First Noel, O Holy Night and Hark The Herald. These were divided by a short break in the middle and interspersed with some Christmas cracker jokes.

“Dwain Dwain King also played his djembe drum (a skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa) which brought a different flavour to some of the carols; Silent Night, Away In A Manger, O Come O Come Emmanuel and The First Noel.

“The event seemed to go down well,” Clare added, “and it was a fun evening that lasted for around an hour or so. While it was a modest turn out of around thirty to forty carollers, all were in good voice and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

“We finished by wishing everyone a happy Christmas, performing Feliz Navidad and encouraging everyone to look out for us again next year,” Clare ended.

An excited crowd of more than 300 family and friends gathered in the Villa Maria School hall on Sunday to enjoy the end of year concert danced by pupils of ‘TM Dance World’ (previously Tara Marshall Dance and Fitness Studio). It was an opportunity for the one hundred dancers, ranging in age from three years old to adults, to show what they had worked hard all year to attain and it was a chance for their families to enjoy the pupils’ success.

Awards were presented to many and the hard work and talent of two outstanding dancers was recognised with not only trophies, but also generous Dance Vouchers.

These went to: Most Promising Student: Ruth Hodges Trophy/$100 TM Dance World Voucher - Neve Molloy.

The community garden in Almond park, Darfield has been up and running now for around two months. With the help of the Darfield community and with everyone coming together, as well as working bees, there are now four big garden beds in place.

“There are lots of yummy lettuces ready to pick,” reported Rhyannon Gregg, Gregg spokesperson for the Community Garden group, “and we have also planted cauliflowers, rocket, beans, carrots, silverbeet, peas and tomatoes.”

The children enjoyed an adventure to the garden for their installation.

Darfield Preschool’s scarecrow ‘Rongo’ is the god of peace and agriculture, while the Toy Library children made ‘Bill’ the flower pot man, and Play Centre designed and made ‘Russell crow’.

“They all look amazing, Rhyannon said, “and we thank all the children for taking part and helping making the garden look fun. Lets hope they do a good job of scaring the birds off the strawberries and tomatoes,” she added.

“The garden is there for anyone in the community to use, so feel free to go down and check out what has been happening. Every Wednesday at around 5.30 we meet at the community garden for a BYO dinner and a catch up.

It’s a great way to meet new people and eat the good food that is ready in the garden. It’s an opportunity to have a laugh and enjoying a water fight has been known too,” Rhyannon ended with a laugh.

Finally Darfield has its own Driving School! Many will know Michelle Jones’ friendly face from her time at Darfield Pharmacy and she is now an NZTA approved and qualified Driving Instructor/Coach something Darfield and surrounding areas has long needed.

“I have lived and worked in the area for twenty years,” Michelle said, “and both my daughters (Chevonn Chevonn and Chloe Walker) Walker were educated in Darfield. I thoroughly enjoy driving, have mentored/assisted numerous drivers to attain their licences and now having gained my qualifications, I am able to offer the same service to my community.”

Michelle is aware of the need to offer warm, friendly, professional and supportive, driving tuition and can assist a range of students from novice to experienced and both young or mature to reach their driving goals.

“As well as assisting the younger driver I can be a respectful equal for the mature learner needing assistance also,” Michelle commented. “I have already been called upon to tutor teens (parents are relieved to be released from driver training challenges),

nervous/anxious drivers (I guarantee confidentiality) or learning challenged (anything can be achieved with microsteps),” Michelle added.

Michelle can offer knowledgeable and professional assistance toward attaining restricted or full licences, she can undertake test course practise with a driver, be available as a test support person, advise on test re-sit preparation and is always a steady, reliable, confidence booster.

“I do advise drivers to use their own vehicles wherever possible, be they automatic or manual,” Michelle said, “and in January 2017 I will also be able to offer an automatic, dual control vehicle for learners’ use.”

Michelle’s Drive School offers an initial ‘complimentary’ driving assessment free of charge and this is followed up by lesson/ coaching plans. “I want lessons to be encouraging, calm, fun, simple, and easily understood,” Michelle added. “I like to go beyond the basics and ensure that trainees understand their vehicle and know how to p e r f o r m c h ec k s , r e f u e l (consequences of incorrect fuel), change a tyre etc.

The Sheffield Garden Club visited Homebush Estate for their annual Christmas func on. The day dawned beau fully, but closed in and turned to showers before the group were homeward bound - but really weather wasn’t an issue.

We were provided with a light lunch and a very interes ng chat from Colin Watson, on the history of the family and property, which dated back to the early 1800’s.

ACer a lucky dip in the Christmas giC box we were then invited to have a walk around the property.

The majes c old trees were quite amazing with some being well over 100 years old.

Following a well worn track alongside the river, we came to an area known as the ‘Cathedral’ standing amidst the majesty of these wonderful trees, you could imagine being inside one of those massive buildings.

Magic and mystery seemed to hang in the air. Even the old stumps seemed to have something magical about them, as if they were wai ng.

The old Homestead is gone now, but in its place is a modern work of strength and vitality. “It will withstand a force nine earthquake,” we were told.

Thank you to the people who made this visit possible and who told us of another liFle piece of Canterbury’s history.

Residents at Darfield’s Westmar Senior Care facility were well and truly entertained on Tuesday, December 13th, by a visit by members of the NZ Army Band.

The band enthralled with a selection of Christmas carols played outdoors in the sunshine.

Needless to say the musical selection was much enjoyed by all.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a rank beginner the forthcoming Darfield Bowling Club, Malvern Cancer Support Group fundraiser is guaranteed to be fun. And while there’s fun to be had, there’s also the knowledge that the event will be raising much appreciated funding for the local Malvern Cancer Support Group.

“All funds raised will go directly to this Group and will remain in the Malvern area supporting our locals with a diagnosis of Cancer,” said Malvern Cancer Support Group spokesperson Elaine Guy. Guy “This is a voluntary group who receive no funding from government.”
