The sun shone, the crowds flocked and throughout the Show comments were heard about the quality and selection of exhibits on offer. There was food aplenty, along with animals, produce, flowers and art to see, plus the stalls and trade exhibitors were impressive.

“I was certainly kept busy all day with the official duties of meeting and greeting Judges, trade exhibits and exhibitors, as well as handing out prizes to winners,” said 2016 Show President Raymond Williams.

New Zealand will have two rising young stars representing the country at the FEI Children’s International Classics Final, the first time in some years the nation has qualified two for the competition.

Emma Watson and Sophie Townsend will be heading to Guadalajara in Mexico where they will take on fourteen other athletes on borrowed horses.

Both girls are extremely excited to have made the cut.

For thirteen-year-old Emma (Morrinsville) it is another excellent result in a winning season; Emma won the New Zealand competition at the Glistening Water Series Final in April, with Sophie just behind her in second place.

Similarly in the Townsend household in Darfield, where mum Maria said her fourteenyear-old daughter does well at most things she turns her hand to.

This will be the first time Sophie has ridden for New Zealand, although she has once been named as a non-travelling reserve.

Sophie said she had hoped to do well in the (FEI Children’s International Classics) class. “I always push myself to do my best, but you can never tell what the outcome will be,” she said. Sophie has been riding since she was about five and

has two ponies this season Tallyho Neptune and Evie II. Sophie has had an excellent season so far and is particularly pleased with Neptune, who is currently leading the mini prix series. Sophie only got Evie II after HOY, with the aim of doing pony grand prix on her.

However, the pony has been out with injury for much of the season, but Sophie is hopeful that things will improve very soon.

The Pony of the Year class is also the big goal for Year nine, Darfield High School student, Sophie’s season.

“This is such a great opportunity to ride for New Zealand,” Sophie added. “I am trained by Tegan Fitzsimon; Fitzsimon I will definitely stick with showjumping and one day I would love to ride in the

Olympic Cup.” The two riders will be hosted in Guadalajara for a week, with the competition running from January 24th to 29th, 2017.

Sophie will be accompanied by her Mum, Maria on the trip to Mexico.

“Sophie and I are very excited; it has always been a goal of Sophie's to represent New Zealand and to be able to wear the silver fern,” Maria said.

“She wants to do her upmost best over there in Mexico; it is an awesome opportunity and we can’t wait.

“We have never been to Mexico, Sophie has only ever been to Australia. She cant wait to meet the other competitors over there and make new friends with them. An exciting opportunity which is not far away,” Maria ended.

“I have always thought Courtenay A & P Show was a good community Show, not just this years, but all those that have preceded it. This was backed up by the feedback we received from showgoers, many of whom attend numerous other Shows, and it’s an honour to hear comments such as these. I put the Show’s success all down to the committee. They do all the hard work and it just happens that I am the one who has been steering the ship this year. I also make special mention of my vice presidents Ashley Seaton and Jane

Jenkins, as well as family who all helped this year also.”

The installation of new seating ringside was deemed an outstanding success and plans are to continue it around the rest of the ring for next year’s Show. The additional entertainment provided; Pedalmania and the children’s fact finding hunt - were extremely well received and enjoyed by many.

“Overall entries were down slightly,” Raymond commented.

“I think this was mainly due to there being less entries in the produce shed where we had a Royal event last year, however the horses were well up on the

Cups and trophies will be available for collection, from the Secretary, after December 7th and full Show results are available on the website www.courtenayshow.org.nz “There certainly is a lot of work to be done after a Show,” Sharon commented, “with a big cleanup day on the Sunday and Monday following, and the finalising of results taking a day or so to complete.

However the great weather this week has made it much easier.

“Gate takings were slightly up on last year, however we can't be too exact about numbers attending as children under sixteen are free, so we aren't able to count them.

Unfortunately the Waimate A&P Show, scheduled to be held on the same day, had to be cancelled, due to extreme weather!

“The animals were all well behaved and the Pet Lambs were the most popular classes we had this year.

“Pedalmania brought their weird collection of bikes and free entry to this attraction was a bonus. The Arion Farm Park brought their collection of petting animals and this was very popular with younger showgoers.

“It was also lovely to see Selwyn MP Amy Adams and new Mayor Sam Broughton attend our Show, which seemed to be enjoyed by everyone attending,” Sharon finished.

Bedford in 1928 (great Grandfather). I am however privileged and honoured to be representing the family - after what I now know to be five generations!,” Raymond finished.

The Darfield Plunket and Toy Library committee of volunteers are celebrating being together one year. They are really pleased with the support they have had from families and businesses in the area, something that assists them greatly with their organisation. Not for profit organisation, Plunket, is New Zealand's largest provider of support services for the development, health and wellbeing of children under five.

Essentially this volunteer group is about bringing together families and organising fun events for children. This year’s highlights have been the Teddy Bear’s Picnic, regular Dessert Nights for parents, Parent Education classes, New Mum Coffee mornings, Movie Night and the well received Under Seven’s Disco.

“Behind the scenes of these events is a very hard working committee of volunteers who I would like to thank,” said Ainsley Bell, Bell spokesperson for the group.

“There are also a number of generous businesses and local families who donate their time or resources too,” she added. “We are already busy planning fundraising opportunities and events for 2017 and you can find out everything we are up to on our Facebook page: Darfield Plunket and Toy Library, or email us at: darfieldplunkettoylibrary

Around fifteen Selwyn District Council staff helped out with the earthquake response in North Canterbury last week.

Council staff have been working in the region since the Monday, when the major 7.8 magnitude e art hquake str uck ne ar Culverden. The quake has been followed by a series of significant aftershocks.

Selwyn District Council’s Incident Command Bus has also been in North Canterbury for the week, being used by response teams working in Waiau. The bus is designed to be used at significant rural fires or emergencies and is equipped with Wi-Fi and radio communications.

Selwyn District Council staff trained in emergency management have also been

rostered on this week to assist with incident coordination. Four building staff have been assisting with building inspections in Waiau, with two other Council staff working in welfare management roles.

Jason Flewellen, Flewellen Selwyn District Council’s Community Resilience Co-ordinator was one of a number of Council staff who spent time in North Canterbury.

On Tuesday, November 15th he and another Council staff member took the bus to Waiau, with twenty New Zealand Response Team members from Christchurch.

A swarm of bees is a colony on the move to a new home and rarely stay in one place for much more than overnight, un l they find their new home. If one should be passing through your property please don't try to hurt or upset them, just keep your doors and windows shut, keep the kids inside and let them experience one of the wonders of nature. ABer a rest the bees will move on and it can be quite spectacular to see them all raise into the air, swirl around and fly off. The sound of the swarm can be quite loud. I have seen them on an ornamental tree and it was hardly able to hold up the weight. If you have a bee colony at your home that has decided to stay, call Grant on 021 440 161 - he will be more than happy to come and collect them, and they will become a produc ve hive.

As for bumble bees they have a nes ng me of four to five months, and then it's all over. Due to their gene cs no male has a father, or can have sons; only grandfathers and grand sons. They are harmless unless you stand on one, or squeeze one in your hand. The popula on of their nest can be from eighty to about 400, they don't produce honey so are not the same problem for example as honey bees in a house wall, where the honey becomes a problem. So these wee guys’ nests are quite rare and are best leB alone.

Bumble bees were imported into Canterbury and are the only insects that can pollenate some of our clovers, which is a Canterbury export. There are four species of bumble bees in New Zealand and unlike honey bees they work all year round, even in cold weather. They live for a season and then the process starts all over again; from a hiberna ng queen laying her eggs in an abandoned mouse hole, or similar.

Our role was to respond to requests for assistance and resolve them or refer them to local Civil Defence headquarters to be actioned, if needed. The town was very busy with volunteer firefighters and resources like food and water arriving and we also helped coordinate and direct some of these resources to where they were needed, along with a local Civil Defence volunteer. Many of the needs people had were able to be met locally, fortunately.”

Several Selwyn volunteers from community response teams also offered to assist with the earthquake response and were placed on standby to support evacuees from Kaikoura and other affected areas at Canterbury welfare centres.

“It’s great to see that the community is also helping in practical ways with groups in Rolleston and Darfield collecting supplies for the response,” said Mayor Sam Broughton.

Mark and Kelsey Williams have been Dairy farming in Aylesbury for five years. Over the last twelve months they have been organising and undertaking training to enable them to sell Raw Milk from their dairy farm at Aylesbury Road.

“We have two vending machines on site, one that sells one litre glass bottles (which are reusable) and one which fills the bottles with fresh Raw Milk,” Mark said. “We milk a special herd of Friesian/Jersey cross heifers which are selected for the highest quality milk. These heifers (two year olds) are mainly fed grass with a small amount of silage each day, after milking.

“These cows are only milked once a day in the afternoon, before our main herd,” Mark added. “This is to ensure the plant is in pristine condition and a lot of care is taken to make certain that the milk is harvested to the highest standards.

“Earlier this year the Ministry for Primary Industries brought in new rules surrounding the production and sale of Raw Milk to the public. This has made the industry more regulated and safer for consumers which means we run a very stringent testing and auditing programme.

“We have been open a month now and are enjoying the fact that people who buy Raw Milk are happy and generally love the product. Many remember having fresh, full cream, milk on their Weetbix as kids, or perhaps those super creamy

The Aylesbury Creamery team is made up of Mark and Kelsey who have two children Addison and Reeve.

Reeve They attend St Andrew’s college which is where Kelsey also works.

“We are all tied up in a lot of sport, mainly based around school,” Mark said. “We don’t currently live on farm, but are about to start building a home on Bealey Road at the far end of it. Our Contract Milkers are Rory Burgess and Jeanette Williamson who have three children Eli, Eli Oliver and a brand new little girl who is yet to be named. Eli has just started at Kirwee school

and Rory plays rugby for the Kirwee Division 3 team. Lastly but not least is Rory’s number two, Casey Peychers who rounds out an awesome team.

We have a lot of laughs at work which is great,” Mark commented with a smile.

As awards were being presented in front of a capacity crowd surrounding the main ring, Matson and Allan Real Estate’s local representative Sue Robinson addressed showgoers. In preparation for the presentation of the Matson and Allen Outstanding Achiever Award, Sue outlined the company’s profile and mentioned that they were proud of their ten year service to Darfield and surrounds.

She added that she was honoured to be presenting the Matson and Allan Outstanding Achievers Award which was now in its 25th year.

“It is awarded to a young person who is excelling in their local area and community,” Sue said, “applicants are comprehensively interviewed, with the judges looking for: Community involvement, future ambitions, sporting ach i eve m ent s, acad e m ic achievements, character and presentation. The award is presented at all local Canterbury A & P Shows and there have been many winners over the years who have gone on to do very well,” Sue commented.

“This year’s winner of the Matson & Allan Outstanding Achievers Award is a true local,’

Sue said. He grew up on a large sheep and cropping farm, attended Kirwee Model School and Darfield High School.

“He is a talented musician, playing the saxophone in a local band, as well as a keen sportsman and has an excellent knowledge of aspects relating to the rural industry. Currently, Sue added, “he is employed as a local stock agent for Hazlett Rural Limited, a stock firm where he does an excellent job.

He is also proving to be a very capable Auctioneer; coming fourth in the National Auctioneering competition at the Christchurch A & P show recently. His community involvement is extensive and he is playing rugby to a high standard in the local senior competition,” Sue finished.

For those that haven’t guessed, the 2016 Matson and Allan Outstanding Achiever is Ben Lill.

Lill Ben was understandably pleased and proud to be named as the winner and expressed his thanks to Matson and Allan for their presentation of the Award to him.

It’s not surprising that staff and management at Darfield’s Challenge Service Station are looking pleased with themselves. The business has just been named as Challenge Retailer of the Year - a National Award that they secured for themselves out of 85 stations, country-wide.

Selwyn District Council, the New Zealand Police and Licensed premises across the district are once again participating in a Christmas/New Year drink drive campaign encouraging drivers to plan a safe ride home if they have had a few drinks.

Many people believe drivers who have been drinking have a lower chance of being stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads, but this is not the case. Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on all Selwyn roads over the Christmas/New Year holiday season. The booze bus will be deployed in both rural and urban areas.

“Drink driving is no longer acceptable as it puts everyone at risk of being injured or killed in a road crash that could have been completely avoidable,” said Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning.

Tinning In Selwyn district from 2011 to 2015, there were 151 crashes where alcohol was involved.

These crashes resulted in twelve fatalities, thirty four serious injuries and fifty eight minor injuries.

“In many cases when drivers are affected by alcohol, inappropriate speed and failure to wear a safety belt also contribute to the severity of the crash. Not surprisingly, most of these types of crashes occur between Friday evening and Sunday morning,” Ngaire added.

This year’s campaign encourages drivers who drink, to choose not to drive, but to think about having a sober driver, using the courtesy van and sharing the designated

driver duties. It also focusses on looking out for friends by discouraging mates from driving after they’ve been drinking and encouraging them to sleep over so they can avoid driving when drunk.

As part of the campaign, posters, coasters, bar mats and pens will be given out to hotels, taverns and other licensed premises in Selwyn in late November and early December.

“Police will be active in Selwyn operating check points and policing the roads in an effort to ensure that everyone is safe,” commented Senior Sergeant Pete Stills of the New Zealand Police. “Police encourage motorists to plan to have a sober driver and if utilising licensed premises in Selwyn to make use of the courtesy vehicles available.”

“Our local hotels and taverns already do a great job with host responsibility, with almost all having courtesy vans,” Ngaire said. “Each year as part of our road safety campaign, we distribute free resources to licensed premises to encourage and support their host responsibility activities.

“A large number of our sports’ clubs and local businesses have also taken up the opportunity to assist with the promotion of the campaign safety messages to their members and staff.

“We are very pleased we are able to continue to provide these free resources to local venues and truly appreciate the support they give us each year in sharing this important message,” Ngaire concluded.

When Kirwee’s Volunteer Fire Brigade set about fundraising at the Courtenay A & P Show for the Kaikoura and Waiau Fire Brigades after the recent horrendous earthquake in their area, they were blown away by the response.

“We raised $1273 in a short length of time,” said a spokesperson for the Kirwee Brigade. “We walked around the Show with a gumboot to collect donations and lots of people were more than happy to give.

Some people donated $50, so it was pretty awesome.”

The Canterbury A & P Show proved to be a success for Hororata Primary School students in the Synlait Canterbury Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championships.

Seven year old Dustin Rowlands, Rowlands and his sister MacKenzie (who both live on a farm) took their lambs to the Show on Thursday morning. The day started off with rain and a very leaky tent, however for Dustin and Mackenzie the Show went on as they prepared their lambs for judging. Dustin won the trophy for Champion Lamb, also coming in at first place for Care and Attention, as well as Leading and Handling. Dustin was also awarded 18.5 points out of 20 for his Project Book.

MacKenzie had a successful day with Reserve Champion in the lamb category, second place for Care and Attention and third for Leading and Handling.

In a bid to help home gardeners cope with another dry summer, the SMART Watering campaign has been recently re-launched.

Five Canterbury districts including Selwyn have joined forces with IrrigationNZ, Canterbury’s Regional Council and two industry partners to help the region’s home gardeners make the best use of irrigation water this summer.

SMART Watering encourages urban gardeners to apply water efficiently. This year’s campaign will focus on educating people about ‘drip irrigation’ - the most efficient way to apply water, plus the benefits of timers or controllers for home garden irrigation systems, and how to store and use rainwater within the garden.

The campaign includes case studies showcasing a range of people and groups using water efficiently, such as Lincoln University’s irrigation modernisation project.

“Knowing how much water plants and crops require, installing efficient systems for water application and the monitoring of soil moisture are practices everyone should

employ. Our focus this season will be on introducing more people to drip irrigation, timers and controllers for home irrigation systems and the benefits of water storage,” commented IrrigationNZ CEO Andrew Curtis.

As well as the new loader wagons EAL AgriServices have a number of different balers generating high quality silage in 4x3, 3x3 or round bales, either with or without inoculant. During the height of the season the equipment is rarely still - it is quite a sight to see the balers working behind the rakes and the JCB telehandlers loading bales onto the fleet of blue Volvo trucks.

For bulk storage of bales, EAL AgriServices also recommend covered bale stacks which are a much under-used but highly cost effective method of large scale silage storage. The bales are uniformly stacked and tightly covered with strong plastic wrap ensuring the seal is

airtight. When stored in an appropriate location and covered effectively, the bales should last several years.

On Saturday, November 5th, bowlers from the West Melton Bowling Club travelled to Kirwee to challenge Kirwee Bowling Club for the Le Compte Cup. There was a good turnout of players from both Clubs, but it was West Melton’s day, winning the Cup

by twelve games to three.

Congratulations to Bob Shorter (Development Squad) and Bob Burnett (Seniors) who were selected to play for Canterbury Country in the Intercentre Competition against North Otago and South Canterbury on December 4th.

On Sunday, November 19th the Women’s Junior Singles Bowls were held at West Melton. The weather was perfect with eight junior women competing for the title; which was won by Rosanne Croft of Kirwee.

Second place went to Betty Green of Darfield and third place to Rosemary Pearson of West Melton.

Also competing were the Men’s Junior Singles held at the

Darfield and Oxford Greens with finals to be held at a later date.

Congratulations to all of those who qualified.

Another successful Kirwee Rugby Club fundraising venture has just concluded with the presentation of prizes at a celebratory social event.

The Bull Calf Weight Gain Programme has again seen another successful season, with entries weighing in very well.

“The competition was set up three years ago as a

fundraiser for the Rugby Club and to involve some of our dairy farming Club supporters,” said a Club spokesperson.

The rearers entered in the competition supplied 31 bull calves with weights ranging from 110 kilograms to 170 kilograms; showing good weight gains achieved.

2nd prize: Timmy and Chloe McNae (Travel voucher) weight 167kgs - daily weight gain 1.37kgs/day.

3rd prize: Jimmy and Marcus Illingworth (Terrace Downs voucher) most calves entered.

“The rearers did an exceptional job, supplying well marked Friesian Bulls,” said Club spokesperson of the competition. “These Bulls were of very good weights for calves born in August and weaned on October, 31st.”
