Clark Land Surveyors Ltd On Saturday, September 24th, over thirty volunteers, including members of the Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust ‘Green Dot’ project and members of the Coalgate/ Glentunnel Reserve Committee, planted 300 native plants in the Coalgate Reserve Native zone. The Te Ara Karkariki Trust is attempting to increase the less than 1% of indigenous vegetation remaining on the Canterbury Plains. The ‘Green Dot’ project is an attempt to identify and establish a corridor of plantings and build community awareness of plains biodiversity. ‘Greendots’ refer to a managed planting on either public or private land supported by the Trust and done in conjunction with landowners and other organisations. This is the seventh year of planting on the Coalgate Reserve site and now totals in excess of 1200 native trees and shrubs. The ‘Green Dot’ project is aimed at creating a green native path way for native birds from the sea to the mountains. An annual plant out has occurred at Coalgate Reserve since 2009. A small number of local residents led by Jules and Rosalie Snoyink of Glentunnel have taken on this responsibility. Coalgate residents would be welcomed to assist with the management of this important area aimed at bringing back native plants that will encourage and promote an increase in native birds to the area. Also on Saturday September 24th a small army of volunteers ignored cold and drizzly conditions to help Peter and Pam Aldersley plant over 500 native plants on their property in Springfield. When the Aldersleys bought the land, a two acre paddock was
