LEARN TO PAINT WATERCOLOUR
Canterbury artist Neela Curran’s Lazy Sundays Watercolour Workshops are back, with exciting new changes and a beautiful farmhouselocationinRakaia.
Last year, Neela focused on beginners, keen to help people start their artistic journey. This year’s schedule welcomes all skill levels, starting with a foundation skills refresher for those who attended but haven’tpracticedmuch.
“The most popular workshops were ‘Watercolour for people who can’t paint or draw,’” says Neela. “I was completely booked out, so this year I’ve settwodatesforthat.”
Neela began teaching watercolour in Australia and has been featured on TV, in magazines, and newspapers. She has taught people with disabilities, mental health challenges, and those in the prison system. “I have to paint for my own mental health—it
keepsmesane,”shesays.
New additions include painting en plein air, gestural line drawing with watercolour wash, and brush pen lettering.
“I needed better lettering for my cityscape paintings, so I started practicing,” she explains. The calligraphy workshops suit anyone wanting to improve handwriting, notjustartists.
All workshops include materials, refreshments, and small, friendly class sizes. “I’ve attended bootcamp-style
workshops, and I hated them,” Neela says. “I want mine to be fun, relaxed, and nurturing— people can even just watch andeatcake!”
Neela believes her teaching success comes from remembering what it’s like to be a beginner. “I demonstrate everything as it happens,” she says. “Watercolour has a wow factor, and I love seeing people’sfaceslightup.”

“I am delighted we’re bringing our free spot checks to the Rolleston community and I encourage people to come along and make the most of this opportunity. Since launchingtheservicefiveyears ago we’ve performed almost 20,000 checks and detected more than 1,900 suspicious lesions including nearly 600 suspected melanomas, so it’s critical in our fight to save lives,” says Andrea Newland, Melanoma New Zealand Chief Executive.
Please note that the Nurse Educator willcheckup tothree spots. This is not a full body

No appointment is necessary. However, as this is a public event, spot checks will be provided on a first-come, firstservedbasis.
If you cannot be seen on the day, you can book an online consultation with a Melanoma New Zealand Nurse Educator at www.melanoma.org.nz
New Zealand has the highest mortality rate from melanoma in the world. More than 7,000 melanomas are diagnosed in New Zealand every year, and around300 diefrom it.In fact, more people die from skin

cancer each year in New Zealand than on our roads. But most skin cancers are preventable, and if recognised and treated early enough, melanoma is almost always curable.

New Zealand is facing a challenging time with the current economic conditions now being worse than the Global Financial Crisis, and families and businesses across Selwyn are not immunetothis.
This is precisely why the Government is relentlessly focused on building economic growth for a stronger, more prosperous future. We’ve spent the first year in government identifying barriers to growth, as well as opportunitiestounlockinvestment.
Recently Finance Minister Nicola Willis has released a progress report on the work being done to shift New Zealand to a higher growth track.

SIMPLE POSIES FROM THE GARDEN

Rolleston Floral Art Interest group started 2025 with a get-together in February. The aim for the day was to make posies from garden flowers. With gardens looking very colourful the posies were an explosion of colour across the whole spectrum.
Hydrangeas were used as the basis for the other flowers. Also, as pictured, members arranged teacups as a simple way to decorate the table when entertaining guests with a minimum of flowers.
The group will meet again in April with Easter designs as the focus for the day.
