To the Editor:
Thanks for the article (Rolleston News, August issue), particularly focused on the 85 express service to Christchurch. It is really sad that, apparently, it takes eight months from order to the supply of a double decker bus that would help solve the capacity issue and also only mean one driver is required. This has been quite successful on the 86 service out to Darfield. The only research that has been brought to the table is overseasbased qualitative research around the behaviour of the travelling public and unfortunately no local qualitative research. Imagine how different the public transport planning would be if they actually ran a meaningful research project over two sets of people – those that no longer take the bus and ask them why and those that do take the bus and ask if they have any suggestions for improvement. The public was asked to give feedback on Ecan’s 10-year plan and the best option that was favoured by planners is quite sub-standard and not fit for the special situation around the express bus services. We have been waiting more than three years for the travelling public to not be treated like sheep packed into a sheep truck and knowing it will take several years for anything to actually happen.
