The Toot 4 Tucker committee has been overwhelmed and humbled by the outstanding support for the Christmas drive this year. With the help of the local Fire Brigade, Ambulance, and Army along with support from local community and businesses, this year’s Toot 4 Tucker drive collected over 135 boxes amounting to more than $10,000 worth of food. The donated food goes to Salvation Army, Greenpark Foodbank, and Ellesmere Foodbank. Toot 4 Tucker chairperson Amanda van der Kley says, “It’s the biggest drive we’ve in the four years since the group started. It just seems to grow year on year.” The Toot 4 Tucker committee is made up from local businesses including Property Brokers Selwyn and Lincoln, Selwyn Lions Club, Rolleston Lions, and Rolleston Rotary. Members of the committee collectively volunteer hundreds of hours to make

CHRISTMAS MESSAGES…. ...From the Mayor, Sam Broughton “I love Christmas for the tradition and carols, scorched almonds, and the start of a summer break. Our amazing district has such a diverse mosaic of cultures, traditions and stories that enrich our neighbourhoods. No matter what your background, Christmas is something for all of us. Whether it’s a simple public holiday to spend time with your friends and whanau or to connect in a church and the meaning of Christmas. I hope over the next month you get some time to slow things down and spend quality time with people you love and reflect on the year gone and the year that will be.

Waikirikiri Selwyn has so much to offer in the summer, Liz, Elliott, and I will be taking some time to enjoy the warmer weather and find or revisit

some favourite spots for a dip in one of our rivers. We wish you and your family and friends a very safe, restful, and merry Christmas.”

However, I acknowledge that it has been a tough year for many, attributed to the cost-of -living crisis, increased mortgage repayment, inflation, and job insecurity which is why the new coalition government is progressing our 100-day plan with urgency.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Nicola Grigg and Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro.

...From the Editor, Jan Thomas Life at the ‘News continues to be reasonably busy and I appreciate everyone's continued support. A big thank you to all my advertisers and editorial contributors, without you the ‘News wouldn’t exist. As the world changes to more of a digital, online and social media presence I often question myself if an old -fashion hard copy of the paper is still required. But, if the paper, for reasons beyond our control, isn’t delivered on time we get multiple phone calls asking where it is. We also get people commenting to us how they love reading the local news and how easy it is to quickly find a tradie in the local ‘rag’. This encourages me to keep the monthly Rolleston News community paper as it is as I’m aware not everyone is on Facebook or has access to the internet. I couldn’t do it with the support, help and loyalty of my lovely staff; Charlotte Farthing, Fi Maddison, Abbi Moore and Grace Hunt. Wishing you all a fabulous festive season.

When Roman Seregina was a young lad of 14 he loved to play the guitar. In his high school days, he and his friends formed a rock band, but his interest soon moved on to writing and playing his own music. Jump forward several years and now Roman’s passion from those early years has become a business albeit one that he loves—he now works as a luthier building guitars from scratch. A luthier is a person who builds or repairs string instruments that have a neck and a soundbox. Over the years Roman tried to find the perfect guitar. “To find a good-sounding guitar isn’t as easy as it seems,” says Roman. “For a person who plays the guitar, the main thing is always the sound, and how enjoyable it is to play the instrument.” For Roman, sound was always important and once he began learning the craftsmanship of a luthier, he soon discovered the importance of types of wood and their combinations, bracing, and shape of the guitar body. His first homemade guitar was back in 2015 in Auckland when he as s em ble d a T e le Partscaster guitar and while he was pleased with the result, he decided he could create something better with higher-quality wood and components—he had his own design in mind. Roman’s wife Kristina says their walls at home were covered in guitar designs. It was time to stop dreaming and start making. “It was a lot of hours watching videos and

reading specialist books, and research about different wood, technologies and markets,” she says. It took time for Roman to build up his tools, create prototypes and learn the skills needed. His first guitars were electric and because he liked to be in complete control of the sound his guitars made, he began making guitar pickups, a device that converts string vibrations into electricity and sold them online. He has now created a range of Stapleton guitars including acoustic, electric and bass. It takes around eight to ten weeks to create a guitar from start to finish. Roman says the finishing stage is the most time-consuming part of the process. When asked what is one thing he loves most about creating a guitar, he says, “The sense of achievement that you’ve just made a musical instrument with your own hands—out of just a few pieces of wood and

a few components. And once you put the strings on and you play the first chords—it just comes together”. "Every guitar is unique and making it is like a mini journey where he’s always excited to hear the final result and compare it to what he envisioned for the piece,” says Roman. Roman and Kristina’s goal is to have a permanent space with the luthier workshop and store, and coffee, open to the public. Kristina says, “We would love to have a destination where people could come and check out how our guitars are made, and then play them on a little stage jamming with other people”. The couple recently had an open day at Te Ara Ātea in Rolleston where they showcased their instruments and members of the public could meet the luthier, Roman. You can check their guitars out at stapletonguitars.com.

CAB: ONLINE SHOPPING Heard the one about the buyer who complained to Facebook Marketplace and got no satisfaction? Sadly, it’s no joke. Shopping online is convenient, enticing and fun… if you are wary of fake sellers, dodgy tactics and Christmas stress-mas, that is. Before you click “buy”, ask yourself: • Does this bring me festive joy? How cute is that doodah? • Does the offer sound too good to be true, too good not to be a scam? Do I feel lucky? • Is price hype being used to sweep me into a purchase I had no intention of making? How close is that shark? • How sharp is that price,

once courier and credit card fees are added? • Ditto for an overseas seller. What’s not shown upfront? Is it really such a bargain once GST, customs duty and biosecurity fees are added at the border? • Overseas seller? What if things go pear-shaped? What then? Do they know New Zealand consumer laws don’t apply to them? • The best protection is a professional trader based in NZ, right? Too right • Does the seller identify themselves clearly and prominently? • Are they registered on companiesoffice.govt.nz?

Is it worth the nervous wait for delivery, the risk of damage in transit or a disgruntled call to my credit card company? Am I sitting comfortably? • If I weren’t over tired and under pressure, if I really sat down and thought about it, I wouldn’t click “buy” right now, would I? •

WATCH YOUR WATER USE The hot weather is coming and it’s time to make sure we’re being smart with our water use and make sure we don’t run dry this summer. With El Niño here NIWA is forecasting a hot, dry, windy summer for Selwyn, so residents are reminded to use water wisely through simple habits that help your garden, save you money and help keep water flowing for everyone without water restrictions. Now is the time to get into good habits, Council Acting Executive Director Infrastructure and Property Murray England says. “Everyone has a part in making sure we have enough water throughout summer. With the winds we’ve had things are drying out fast, but the good news is there’s lots of simple things we can all do

Ci?zens Advice Bureau now hold free monthly clinics at Te Ara Atea.

that are good for your garden, the environment, your wallet, and the wider community. Things like watering efficiently and using the water clock to water outside of peak times, it all adds up to a better summer for everyone.” Tips for saving water at home: • Skip some days watering to keep your plants strong. Water your garden and lawn every few days rather than every day. Watering every day encourages roots to develop at the surface, making them more vulnerable to hot dry spells. • Water for shorter. For example, watering for three 5-minute intervals over a couple of hours lets the soil absorb more water than watering for 15 minutes continuously.

Use a watering can on your garden. It uses less water and gives you more control to water at the roots, where the plants need the water to grow strong — not on the leaves. • Water what needs it. Your driveway, footpath, or buildings don't need watering. Consider not watering your berm or your lawn too — let it die off during summer to save money on your water rates and wear and tear on your lawn mower. • Mulch or cover. Covering the soil with mulch or organic matter keeps moisture in the soil, protects roots from sun and wind and reduces weeds. • Check for leaks. Inspect hoses and taps. •

NEWS FROM THE SHED Rolleston Men’s Shed are busy making penguin houses— smaller sizes are being made for the Antarctic Centre for their penguin rescue section. A sample and materials were supplied and four have been built. Once they are delivered, existing penguin houses will come to the Shed for refurbishing. More rose trellises have been made and are available painted or not painted. The playhouse the group has been working on is finally finished and delivered. A sec on d on e is bein g assembled and will be also supplied as a flat pack. Th e c o m pu t er sec t i on continues to upgrade older laptops and the 3D printer is usually making something to fix someone's broken item. So often spares are not available and being able to make something saves landfill. A good yarn and the morning cuppa are still the important items.

The Shed is open Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday 9am until midmid-day. Visit the website for more information: rollestonshed.wordpress.com.

USING YOUR EQUITY Now that the Reserve Bank has dropped the investment deposit back to 35%, it may be a good time to look at using the equity in your own home to purchase a rental property. Up to 76% of rental income can be used to service the lending, or more if the property has been built after March 2020.

The National party did indicate that they would fully reinstate interest deductibility by 2026 (if the government is formed by then!) and winding back the Bright-line property tax to two years from the current 10. ENJOY CHRISTMAS AND PROTECT YOUR HEALTH The festive season is rapidly approaching, and we are used to celebrating with lots of delicious food, but how can we keep it fun and healthy? It should be easy and not scream diet food to your visitors. Here is my recipe for success. First, make sure you are using olive oil for dressings. For frying, roasting or cooking use butter, coconut oil or olive oil. Most people won't notice a difference, yet you are serving healthier food. Throw away any vegetable oil. A knob of butter onto hot vegetables before serving adds a nice flavour. BBQ food is great, but again, don’t use any vegetable oils to cook with. Provide plenty of

meat, eggs, and fish for guests, these are the most nutritious foods. Cold cuts are great and go with almost anything. Roast meat with plenty of green vegetables is excellent. Substitute kumara or sweet potato for spuds and if you want to serve rice, take a look at the frozen cauliflower r ic e available in th e supermarket, or make your own. Serve plenty of summer salads optionally with an olive oilbased dressing. My favourite is egg salad, with a little curry but when selecting mayonnaise, look for eggbased without vegetable oils. For snacks, I suggest fresh nuts and cheese instead of candy, but ensure they are fresh. For dessert, strawberries, blueberries and/or raspberries with fresh cream are delicious. If you serve ice cream, keep the servings small. Dark chocolate 80%-plus is the best option. Pavlova is great but find one with low sugar or make your own. Whip cream without sugar or add a tiny amount of sugar substitute, such as monk fruit. Christmas drinks! Avoid juices

and sodas as most are full of sugar. Low carb beer is really catching on, a little wine is okay but don’t overdo the quantity. Provide plenty of chilled (filtered) water with ice for everyone and maybe jazz it up with some lemon, cucumber, or other fruit to lift the flavour. Merry Christmas and enjoy the celebrations. The oldest building at Scott Base, a hut built by a Sir Edmund Hillary-led team, is visiting West Rolleston Primary School during December in virtual reality form. More than 300 students from 14 classes will learn about New Zealand’s first Antarctic expedition using this immersive technology. Principal Sylvia Fidow says of the school’s involvement, “Our students have immediately embraced the VR experience and have been excited by their new learning about one of our amazing pioneers and the Antarctic Environment.” The technology is part of Antarctic Heritage Trust’s education programme roadshow and is the last stop for the year. The tour will continue throughout 2024, visiting more schools and public venues.

Developed in partnership with Auckland University of Technology and Staples VR, the virtual reality (VR) experience allows users to explore Sir Edmund Hillary’s hut in Antarctica. The

experience provides insight into how the 23 men in Sir Ed’s team lived and worked in the world’s most extreme environment more than 60 years ago.

Virtual reality gives children a chance to visit Antarctica with a glimpse of what it would be like to visit this special place and inspire our next generation of explorers.

Looking back over the year we can safely say we have come a long way in all areas. Our drives to appointments have been very much sought after from folk in our district who are unable to drive themselves, or who find the bus does not take them directly to where they want to go. We take people to Burwood, St Geor ge’s, Southern Cross, Medical and Dental centres as well as Chch Hospital. Our drivers are all volunteers and generously give of their time to help those in the community who need help with transport, or have Meals on Wheels delivered, need to go shopping etc. We are not government funded so totally rely on fundraising

and donations. We ask for a koha from our passengers which allows us to reimburse our drivers. One of our very successful fundraisers this year has been selling shoes. One of our Board members kindly donated the contents of his warehouse, and we still have some left at the great price of $60 per pair! Now that’s better than Black Friday! Our van trips have been so popular this year that we have had to find extra drivers and are now able to have all our van drivers holding a P Licence. We have First Aid kits in the van and are looking at purchasing a defibrillator. Everyone loves the van trips and we have found some wonderful spots in and around Canterbury for sightseeing and for morning teas and lunches. Anyone is welcome to join our van trips, especially if you are living alone or don’t have the

confidence to drive. This year we have had overnight trips also which have proved to be very popular, visiting places such as Dunedin, Oamaru, Tekapo and Mt Cook. Finally, we have had to say farewell and thank you to Dr Olive Webb, who has been our chairperson for many years. Olive recognised the need to support the older persons in our community and did something about it. She will be missed but has earned her rest. Contacts are coordinator Yvonne Lamond, Ph. 021 460 347 and van trips, Ross Seddon, Ph. 027 433 4767.

Wishing all our clients, supporters and volunteers, Seasons Greetings and see you all next year. If you are going to be alone on Christmas Day, give Yvonne a call as we may be able to offer you a Christmas lunch.

ROLLESTON COMBINED PROBUS By Juliette Easterbrook, Publicity Officer At our November meeting, which was our last for the year, our speaker was Bernadette Devonport who spoke to us again about a book on the history of Rolleston up to 1990. This time she spoke about the earlier days up to 1970. We found this to be very interesting as some of our members had been early residents of Rolleston and those of us who came later really appreciated hearing how Rolleston was settled in those

early days. at the Melton Estate in We had heard from Bernadette December. earlier in the year covering the We had two new members join later period and were the club this month and always impressed both times by the welcome more new members enthusiasm she has for the to our friendly group. ROLLESTON CENTRAL PROBUS The end of year is nearly upon us, and what a year we have had, so many interesting speakers, outings, and coffee mornings. It’s has been great for our growing group of older folks here. May we have another great year coming. Thank you to all who have helped make it successful. At our most recent meeting, we had Probus ambassador Don Hayes talking on the experience of being involved with making Haagen Daz ice

cream, most interesting was the rise and fall of its manufacture in NZ. We have a few speakers organised for the New Year. Outings coming up are wine tasting and lunch at Larcombs, Xmas lunch at The Chateau and a walk about Harts Creek, so a nice way to finish off the year. There will be no actual meeting in January but instead a lunch at Silver Dollar to renew ourselves for the New Year. We are always looking for

those who need company and want to meet new folk, and our display at SWELL did that, so welcome to the club one and all, and we want to hear about their life and interests, so the Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship can continue. We wish you all the best for the Festive Season and see all next year for interesting happenings. Contact Herb on 332 17466 or Denise on 027 557 0515 for more information.

WOULD YOU LIKE MORE COMPANY? If you are feeling lonely, or would just like more social contact, it’s important to do something about it, and Age Concern Canterbury can help. Many older people in our community are lonely or isolated as they receive few or no regular visitors. Research shows that social isolation and loneliness experienced by older people can lead to serious health issues. Our Visiting Service is a befriending service that provide regular contact for older people who would like more company. Our visitors are volunteers who are keen to spend time with an older person for about an hour each week enjoying conversation, shared interests and activities. The Visiting Service matches older people who are lonely or socially isolated with volunteers who are keen to spend time getting to know them. The volunteers are police-checked and trained and spend about an hour each week sharing conversation and activities with their older friend. Most visits take place in the client’s home, but some may involve going out together. Matches are made carefully, based on personality, shared interests, cultural needs, and location. The matches are regularly reviewed to make sure they are mutually beneficial to both parties. Our volunteers visit for about one hour per week on a regular basis. We ask for a minimum commitment of at least one year. To become an Age Concern Visitor, we ask you to attend an interview, provide referees, complete a police check, and participate in our orientation programme.

ROLLESTON LIONS By: Heather, Publicity, Rolleston Lions Club This has been a really busy year for Rolleston Lions, and we are all looking forward to a rest. Over the past couple of months, we have gained another three members, so welcome to Lewis, Jimmi, and Karen. We have been visited by the District Governor, John Bilderbeck, participated in two lots of Toot For Tucker for our local food banks, cooked up a storm at the fireworks, and the carols, attended meetings and visits to other clubs, delivered what seemed like thousands of phone books, sold heaps of Christmas cakes, interviewed students for awards and attended meetings! During the year we lost two of our elder statesmen Denis Power and Lex Cockburn, who

were both given a guard of honour, a fitting tribute for two Lions with many years of service. President Shirley and I were thrilled to present Isobel Jones and Ted Ward with Lions Scholarships of $1000 each and Rahil Prasad with the Kindness Matters trophy, at the recent Rolleston College Senior prizegiving. Selecting the winners was difficult because of the number of talented and capable young people at the College. At this time of year, we remember those of our international Lions family who are living and serving in countries who do not get to enjoy the message of Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All. Merry Christmas.

CONSTRUCTIVE PLAY FOR ADULTS Rachel de Vries of House of Bricks, a Rolleston-based business, is now a certified facilitator of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® (LSP) method and materials. LSP is designed for adults and is the name given to the process that uses creativity, exuberance, and the inspiration of play, to the serious concerns of adults. LSP is built on the science of play, constructionism, and constructivism (building knowledge by building things), hand-mind connection, flow, and metaphors. She rec en tly atten ded further LSP training with a focus on using the process to support teams, communities and individuals dealing with stres s, anxiet y, depression, grief, and a wide variety of mental health issues. “As a result of this training,” says Rachel, “I have an 8week programme for our clients to access that is a form of group play therapy based on the theoretical foundations of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and utilises Motivational Interviewing and Group Play Therapy techniques.” These sessions are designed to help individuals cope with the symptoms and experience of anxiety and to discern poten ti al path w a ys to overcome stressors and better thrive. She says the course is not a replacement for other forms of treatment and is meant to support a treatment plan outlined by a mental health professional. Traditional LSP is used as a communication, facilitated thinking, and problems o l v i n g tec hn ique for organisations, teams, and individuals. “I specifically enjoy working with clients looking to unlock deeper team goals than 'let's reach a sales goal of $$', or teams looking to develop and strengthen their team through exploring their identity and aspirations,” says Rachel. “I love the versatility and inclusivity of the brick. Most people know what it is and how to use it. Those who don't know about the brick, easily pick up the process and in ten t of th e c lassic LEGO® brick and become confident users in the context of the various House of Bricks

programmes to progress their learning (if they are young) or support them as part of a team (through the LSP method).” Rachel says she is looking forward to 2024, when House of Bricks turns 10. “It has taken Jason and I around the country, the world, and to the

biggest competition of all— LEGO® Masters (now on TVNZ+, LEGO Masters NZ, season 2).” Keep an eye on the Rolleston News next year for more information about House of Bricks birthday celebrations.

House of Bricks Rachel de Vries has recently completed training as a certified facilitator of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® and looking forward to bringing programmes to people in the Selwyn district.

ROLLESTON GARDEN CLUB Our club has had another great year, plenty of interesting speakers, outings and working bees in the community—big thank you to you all. Over the last two months, we have had Rachel Vogan speaking on new plants and community gardens, and then Elizabeth Peacock on hanging basket—both very interesting topics. Next year the Club will start off with visits to members’ gardens and trips to Ashburton and the botanical gardens. What’s happening in the garden at this time of year— peonies, roses and Rhodes are all flowering well. Summer garden annuals planted to give a show of colour is always a good idea. Having a vege garden is always a good idea these days, not hard to do and

gives a lot of pleasure to go out the door to pick them instead of heading to the supermarkets. If you have one, keep an eye out for those pesky white butterflies on your brassicas—cover them if you can. Water is the next thing as weather is so up and down, and the winds just dry everything so much, and a little feed with some good fertilisers will help things keep producing for you. We wish you all the best for this festive season, which has come upon us quite quick, and hope to see you all out gardening in the holidays. Do come and join our friendly, small garden club to meet and learn more about gardening. For more information on our Club, contact Julie 03 347 1311 or Ann 03 347 8817.

CONGRATULATIONS TO... Tessa Herridge. Tessa has just been promoted to Cadet Sergeant of the St John Youth Division in Rolleston. Tessa has served as a volunteer for Rolleston Toy Library for quite some time to assist the group with counting and checking toys on Sundays to rack up her volunteer hours. Rolleston Toy Library is grateful for the help of

volunteers like Tessa who keep their wheels turning. The group says, “We are super proud of her hard work and well-earned promotion. It's great to be part of a community that's raising the next generation of leaders.”

The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when a Emily, young lady aged about 20 years old walked up and sat on his lap. Now, we all know that Santa doesn't usually take requests from adults, but she smiled very nicely at him, so he asked her, 'What do you want for Christmas?' 'Something for my mother, please,' replied Emily sweetly. 'Something for your mother? Well, that's very loving and though7ul of you,' smiled Santa. 'What do would you like me to bring her?' Without turning a hair Emily answered quickly, 'A son-in-law.'
