ROLLESTON LIONS UPDATE

After a busy start to the year, the Rolleston Lions enjoyed participating in their major fundraiser, which is providing a food tent at the South Island Agriculture Field Days at Kirwee held every two years. They supplied hot food, including bacon butties, hot dogs, chips, sausages etc. This type of catering takes a lot of organising for four days, and we were lucky to have Chris , Brian, John and Leo running the show, with the rest of us pitching in to help. This is a great way to raise funds for our community. Prior to this, we held our Colour Fun Day, where local MP Nicola Grigg sported a rainbow tinge to her clothing! Good fun was had by all, with all proceeds from this event going to youth activities.

Now is the time of year when we start looking for the next Club Officers, and incoming President Shirley has been busy encouraging people to step up to new roles. We have also been looking at plans for encouraging new members, including setting up a monthly Sunday Lunch Group, for anyone interested to attend, learn more about Lions as well as sample the new restaurants popping up in the Rolleston area. Watch this space! Heather Power, Marketing and Publicity, Rolleston Lions.

Sccc Trust

The Selwyn Central Community Care (SCCC) Trust have started the year with plenty of activity as the need for the service seems to grow by the day. We have extended our catchment area to include Templeton at the request of the local GPs, and we have also had requests for assistance from Nurse Maude and Burwood Hospital. In February, we travelled a total of 2,255kms, and March totals will probably exceed that. This means we are looking for more drivers! If you can give us even one day a week we would be grateful.

Our trips are going from strength to strength. In February, we had our first overnight trip when eight people enjoyed a trip to Oamaru and the surrounding area. The koha payment included food and accommodation plus petrol costs, but was still a very reasonable trip. The next two day trip is to Hokitika and is already booked out! For older people living alone or unable to drive these trips are a treat. I joined a day trip to Lake Coleridge recently and thoroughly enjoyed my day out. We try to provide three full day trips each month. It’s amazing the interesting places we see on our travels and the yummy food we find in cafes, some of which have been converted from old post offices or school buildings.

Yvonne, our current Coordinator, is doing a sterling job as the demand for our services grows. Our new Treasurer, Hilary, is coping well with our finances, but of course, there is always the pressing need for fundraising to allow us to keep assisting our elderly in Selwyn. We are very grateful for those businesses and groups who support us.
