ROLLESTON LIONS UPDATE

After a busy start to the year, the Rolleston Lions enjoyed participating in their major fundraiser, which is providing a food tent at the South Island Agriculture Field Days at Kirwee held every two years. They supplied hot food, including bacon butties, hot dogs, chips, sausages etc. This type of catering takes a lot of organising for four days, and we were lucky to have Chris , Brian, John and Leo running the show, with the rest of us pitching in to help. This is a great way to raise funds for our community. Prior to this, we held our Colour Fun Day, where local MP Nicola Grigg sported a rainbow tinge to her clothing! Good fun was had by all, with all proceeds from

this event going to youth activities.

Now is the time of year when we start looking for the next Club Officers, and incoming President Shirley has been busy encouraging people to step up to new roles. We have also been looking at plans for encouraging new members, including setting

up a monthly Sunday Lunch Group, for anyone interested to attend, learn more about Lions as well as sample the new restaurants popping up in the Rolleston area. Watch this space! Heather Power, Marketing and Publicity, Rolleston Lions.

SCCC TRUST

The Selwyn Central Community Care (SCCC) Trust have started the year with plenty of activity as the need for the service seems to grow by the day. We have extended our catchment area to include Templeton at the request of the local GPs, and we have also had requests for assistance from Nurse Maude

and Burwood Hospital. In February, we travelled a total of 2,255kms, and March totals will probably exceed that. This means we are looking for more drivers! If you can give us even one day a week we would be grateful.

Our trips are going from strength to strength. In February, we had

our first overnight trip when eight people enjoyed a trip to Oamaru and the surrounding area. The koha payment included food and accommodation plus petrol costs, but was still a very reasonable trip. The next two day trip is to Hokitika and is already booked out! For older people living alone or unable to drive these trips are a treat. I joined a day trip to Lake Coleridge recently and thoroughly enjoyed my day out. We try to provide three full day trips each month. It’s amazing the interesting places we see on our travels and the yummy food we find in cafes, some of which have been converted from old post offices or school buildings.

Yvonne, our current Coordinator, is doing a sterling job as the demand for our services grows. Our new Treasurer, Hilary, is coping well with our finances, but of course, there is always the pressing need for fundraising to allow us to keep assisting our elderly in Selwyn. We are very grateful for those businesses and groups who support us.

If you would like to get in contact with Selwyn Central Community Care Trust, the contact numbers are Yvonne: 027 313 1122 or Ross (the Van Man): 027 433 4767. HJP, SCCC Trust - Publicity.

STRONG SHOOTING FUTURE

Rolleston-based Ewan Bawden, has been shooting clay targets since he started Year 9 at Lincoln High School. He set himself a goal to be a top New Zealand shooter and is on his way to achieving this.

Ewan reached AA Grade within three years due to his hard work and dedication to the sport. It hasn’t been easy sailing for Ewan who suffered from health issues and underwent operations on his ears. He now has low hearing which possibly is helpful as he can’t hear people chatting behind him while he is on the mark. He is coached by David Miller and Colin Miller , who have both been representatives for New Zealand over the years. They have achieved excellent results, not only with Ewan, but all the students they coach.

Ewan started the year by winning the Junior High Overall at the Westland Provincials for the third year running. He was then reasonably confident going into the New Zealand Nationals in Hamilton where he shot for the Junior South Island team, unfortunately losing to the North Island team. He shot consistently all week and won the Individual Junior Minis. His AA Grade means he is competing against

everyone, including the best of the best. He is happy to have had three shoot-offs and knows he is nipping at their heels for placings.

Subsequently, his scores were good enough to secure a place in the Junior Mackintosh team and to shoot for his country.

The Mackintosh event is an extremely prestigious representative team that is selected from the New Zealand Single Barrel, New Zealand Rise and New Zealand Points Score Championships. The event is held on a postal basis, with teams from Australia, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada and South Africa competing. Final results are not known until July, when the European countries have shot their event.

“This is an amazing achievement and we are very proud of him. He has also qualified for the Junior Oceania team, competing in Auckland, April 27th to 30th,” commented Ewan's mum, Maxine Bawden.

The Junior Oceania event is a biannual event that started in 2016, intending to foster Clay Target Shooting within the South Pacific and to increase participation with an emphasis

on junior development.

Ewan is very proud to shoot for his country and works hard to help finance the trips required to compete at this level. He is currently looking for sponsors to help fund his trip to Auckland, as well as other trips he will no doubt be involved in to continue his success.

In May the school circuit starts and he is looking forward to competing with his team who are capable of higher achievements with the excellent coaching they have, and are hoping for a great year of results.

If you would like to sponsor Ewan please email: maxine.classiccurtains@gmail.com

COUNCIL ADOPTS DRAFT PLAN

At Wednesday, March 29th, special meeting Selwyn District Council adopted its Draft Annual Plan for public engagement.

The Draft Plan outlines what the Council is going to do over the coming year and how much it will cost. It’s the third year of the Council’s Long-Term Plan 20212031.

Mayor Sam Broughton said, “Council has worked hard to pull together a work programme that keeps the rates as low as possible while ensuring its services and facilities continue to meet the needs of Selwyn’s ever-growing communities.

“We are acutely aware of the rising living costs that our residents are facing at the moment given the high inflation.”

The proposed average rates increase is 5.9%, slightly higher than the 5.5% increase forecast in the Long-Term Plan, but well

below the current rate of inflation of 7.2%.

For a typical household this rate increase means an extra $3.36 a week. This is an average, and for individual ratepayers, the actual change may be smaller or greater, depending on their location and the services provided.

“When planning our capital projects, we focused on what’s achievable, and thanks to several new government initiatives we have had an opportunity to also access additional funding sources. This has enabled us to progress new projects or bring some already planned forward, particularly in the transportation area. An example of such a project is traffic signals at a key arterial intersection in SelwynLevi/Lowes/Masefield/Lincoln Rolleston Road traffic signals, which was originally scheduled for 2025/26,” Sam continued.

In addition to several major projects, the Council is continuing to invest in services, facilities and infrastructure, and other community projects across the district. These include projects such as the new:

• community reserve development in Dunsandel and Darfield

• water treatment plant in Leeston and Prebbleton

• membrane water treatment plant and reservoir in Springfield

• reservoirs in Hororata and Arthur’s Pass

• and intersection upgrades in Lincoln town centre.

To deliver these services and facilities, the plan proposes committing $137.7 million to capital projects over the next twelve months. This includes $20.8 million in water supply projects, $45.8 million in wastewater projects and $43.5 million in transportation projects.

“While our work programme for next year is pretty much on track with what’s outlined in our LongTerm Plan that was widely consulted on, it’s still important that we hear from our Selwyn communities.

“I encourage everyone to have a look at our draft plan and let us know if we are on the right track or if we have missed something,” Sam concluded.

Feedback period is open from Friday, 31st March, until 5pm Friday, 28th April.

People will also have a chance to talk to their local councillor at drop-in sessions held in each ward. More information on the drop-ins, how to give feedback or read the Draft Annual Plan will be available on Council engagement website at selwyn.govt.nz/annualplan2023 on 31st March onwards.

NICOLA GRIGG - OPINION PIECE

Twenty five percent of the population of Rolleston is under fifteen years of age.

As the fastest growing district in New Zealand, Selwyn is home to four high schools, twenty eight primary schools and fifty six early learning centres. Therefore, it stands to reason, education is a critical component to our community. Getting it right is even more critical. As I get around the schools in our district it is patently clear to me just how passionate, dedicated and extraordinarily hard-working our teachers, principals and boards of trustees are. Without them, it’s fair to say, we as a community would be lost.

10 students failed a basic writing test.

This is utterly unacceptable. That’s why National has announced our ‘Teaching the Basics Brilliantly’ policy which will ensure every child has the skills they need in reading, writing, maths and science to set them up for further success. Firstly, National will require all primary and intermediate schools to teach an hour of reading, an hour of writing and an hour of maths, on average, every day.

and trainee teachers spend more time learning how to teach the basics. We will also provide them with more classroom tools and lesson plans to help them teach reading, writing, maths and science.

We will set a target of eighty percent of Year 8 students being at or above the expected curriculum level for their age in reading, writing, maths and science by 2030.

But teachers have increasingly been coming to see me outside of school hours to express just how difficult life is for them. On the back of three years of pandemic-induced upheaval, they are burnt out - they aren’t being given the tools and support they need, and many talk of how the kids they teach deserve better from the system. If we can form a government later this year, National will ensure every child gets a worldclass education, so when they leave school, they can lead the life they want - and our plan is to empower teachers and schools to do this.

The current state of education in New Zealand is alarming. Education achievement has been in decline for the last thirty years, and a recent NCEA pilot shows two thirds of secondary school students failed to meet minimum standards in reading, writing and maths, while ninety eight percent of Decile One Year

Secondly, National will re-write the curriculum, so it says what must be taught each year in reading, writing, maths and science to every year group in primary and intermediate schools.

Currently, the curriculum is far too loose. It does not give teachers clear guidance about what to teach and when.

Thirdly, National will require schools to assess student progress in reading, writing and maths at least twice a year every year from Year 3 to Year 8, with clear reporting to parents.

Finally, we will ensure teachers

We will also aim to return New Zealand students to the top ten in the world in maths, reading and science, measured by the OECD’s PISA rankings, by 2033. If New Zealand is to have internationally competitive incomes and living standards, we need a world-class education system that starts with teaching the basics brilliantly.

ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED UPDATE

The Rolleston Men’s Shed Woodwork Workshop is always busy. They recently made dodgeball pits for two Rolleston schools, and subsequently a third school has now asked for one.

Lengths of timber are being laid out for marking and drilling for coat and bag racks. Another two easy chairs are being repaired with four more kitchen chairs, dismantled ready for repair and refurbishment also.

A Chinese camphor wood chest has had castors fitted and now

needs the wood oiled. A table is being made from kwila wood to be used to support a planter box. The Shed has been donated metal from a firm changing premises. This will be used for projects in the Engineering Workshop. An AC/DC Tig Welder has been donated, and both metal and welder were gratefully received.

A member of the Shed had the Engineering Workshop repair his bike rack. This was one he had originally made many decades

ago using it on his bike for a ride up the coast of California. He has been known to ride to the Shed with a desktop computer strapped to the rack on his bicycle.

The Electronics Section is discovering out how many appliances are now poorly designed. So many manufacturers try to make it impossible to access them to do any repairs, so not every attempt to fix an item is successful. A good yarn and the morning cuppa are still the important items.

Feel free to drop by for a yarn!

The Shed, situated at 54 Dynes Road, Rolleston is open Saturday, Monday and Wednesday mornings. Visit our website for further information: rollestonshed.wordpress.com

EXPERIENCE THE GLOW

The Hororata Glow Festival is an immersive experience with something magical to discover in every corner. The Hororata Domain will come alive with the Hororata Glow Festival on Saturday, 13th May 2023, with a postponement date of Sunday, 14th May, in case the weather is not favourable on Saturday.

“Our community loves welcoming people to the Hororata Glow Festival, and we look forward to bringing new experiences to the Festival that will delight the young and young at heart,” explains Cindy Driscoll from the Hororata Community Trust, who is partnering with Ballooning Canterbury to stage this popular event.

Hot air balloons will inflate like giant lanterns and glow rhythmically to music performing a night glow. As a unique treat Buster, the British Bulldog will be performing this year. Buster is a special shape hot air balloon that will join Ballooning Canterbury and other New Zealand balloon crews for the Festival.

“We are excited to have Buster coming to Hororata from the UK. It is the first time we have had an international special shape at the event. There has been a lot of logistics to get Buster here, and we would like to thank the Interislander who have supported us with this,” commented Michael Oakley from Ballooning Canterbury.

“Before the night glow, people can walk through a cold inflated balloon and interact with pilots to learn more about the art of

flying a hot air balloon. I recommend people get to the event early to avoid missing out on these experiences,” Michael concluded.

A vibrant festival surrounds the hot air balloons night glow performance. Capitol City, an eleven piece band, will be rocking following the balloon performance, and the University of Canterbury will have new interactive science demonstrations to wow everyone. Don’t miss the UV art zone or the magical fairy tree and garden, plus rides on a Noddy Train. A vast array of food will be available, as well as stalls to stock up on winter staples.

The Hororata Glow Festival is the only event of its kind in the South Island and sold out in 2021. “We have 130 volunteers involved in making this Festival happen, it is a platform for community groups to fundraise from and profits go towards developing the new Hororata Community Hub,” Cindy concluded.

Tickets must be purchased online; there will be no gate sales. Children under 16 years are free.

ROLLESTON FIRE BRIGADE UPDATE

The Rolleston Fire Brigade currently sits at 146 calls for 2023. It feels like this year has already been very busy and has disappeared fast to date.

March has seen a big milestone for one of our members, Nigel Lilley, who has now served his community for twenty five years. This is a huge achievement that is only achieved by a small few. What makes it even more special is that Nigel has served all twenty five years in the Rolleston Brigade. Congratulations Nigel on achieving your Gold Star. You have certainly been a loyal servant to Fire and Emergency and to the Rolleston Fire Brigade.

As we head towards winter, it’s a good time to remind everyone when driving in low light conditions to turn their headlights on, please. Drive to the conditions, and allow a little extra time on the road. If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace be careful when disposing of ashes - make sure the ashes are cold and out before putting them into a bin.

On the 25th of March, we had some of our members compete in the South Island Firefighter Challenge at Hagley Park. Congratulations Nathan, you represented the Brigade well. All the best at the National competition in Wellington in May.

Congratulations also to Chris for running in his first individual event coming third in the Rookie category.

Chris Peat, Senior Firefighter, Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade.

And the Outlook Look for Thursday, Your Guess is Good as Mine!

Economists are all over the place, but overall it would seem they are looking a lot more positive than last month.

Forecasters seem to agree interest rates will hold steady at about where they are at, with the OCR predicted to rise only another 25 base points at the next review.

Housing prices are predicted to bottom out towards the end of the year, if not sooner, so a lot of positive talk is out there right now. Recently we have even seen some cuts in interest rates.

If you have been thinking about buying your first home, or a second home, upgrading or investing, there is no time like the present.

However, to be forewarned is to be forearmed as they say. So many things come into play, and the only truly predictable thing is the unpredictability.

So stay your course, make adjustments as needed and enjoy the ride!

A man received the following text from his neighbour:

“I am so sorry Bob. I’ve been riddled with guilt and I have to confess. I have been helping myself to your wife, day and night when you’re not around. In fact, more than you. I do not get it at home, but that’s no excuse. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apology with my promise that it won’t, ever happen again!”

Bob in complete shock, didn’t know what to do…. A few moments later, a second text came in:

“Damn spell check! I meant wi-fi.”
