Local Rolleston girl, Mea Richards was diagnosed with Aplastic Anaemia in July after being admitted to hospital with influenza. The diagnosis was determined after five weeks of testing and a bone marrow aspiration.
The preferred treatment option is a bone marrow transplant, unfortunately there are no suitable matches on the international database, and her sibling, dad (Ray ) or mum (Nicole) weren't matches either.
There are 42 million people on the international registry, of that five, had initial matches with Mea, with further testing showing they were not a high enough match.
Recently the family held a Donor Drive at the Hornby Working Men’s Club to try and find a suitable match for Mea.
The number of people that attended exceeded the family’s expectations, with 220 amazing people being swabbed and another 55 samples that were sent away later.
“Both Ray and I were blown away by the generosity of the
people that showed up on the day, at least half didn't know me or Ray personally,” commented Nicole Richards.
“We urge anyone willing to donate between the preferred age bracket (18-35 years old) to pop into their local blood bank and ask to go on the registry.
“Recently, Mea started yet another treatment called Immunosuppressant Therapy, with a drug called ATG, which included a fourteen day stay in the Child Haematology and Oncology Centre (CHOC). This treatment is six months long, with another bone marrow aspiration due at around one hundred days.
“Mea is like any other eight year old, she has a caring, bubbly personality and just wants to continue life as normal and she misses her friends and school, she also misses home when we are in CHOC. She has endured so much in the past five months, more than any child should have to, her dad and I are so proud of how she is coping with it all. She recently had to have a second
Hickman Line put in as her first one only lasted three weeks as it ended up infected, during this process she has mentioned more than once 'I don't want this
stupid disease', the only real complaint that has come from her,” continued Nicole.

ROLLESTON LIONS
Rolleston Lions have been incredibly busy recently. Along with Selwyn Lions, Rolleston Rotary, Property Brokers, the Police, Fire Brigade, Ambos, the Army and assorted young people, we have participated in two lots of Toot for Tucker. Lincoln on November 16th and Rolleston on November 30th. As usual, folk in the district have been very generous, and we have been able to donate goods to the Salvation Army, Ellesmere and local Foodbanks. If you missed the collectors and have some non-perishable goods you would like to donate, you can drop them off at Rolleston
Property Brokers. Toiletries, laundry and bathroom cleansers are welcome also.
We have assisted at some interesting events, including Vintage Fest, Selwyn Fireworks, Dementia Collections and Christmas cake selling. We have Armageddon coming up and our own end of year festivities when we can relax and don’t have prior commitments!
Congratulations to our Lions Scholarship winners from Rolleston College, Zharna McHarg and Cooper Johnson , we wish them well in their future studies. Our Kindness Matters Award this year was shared by,
Jorja Whale and Logan Whittington-Clent
As we look back over our year, it is pleasing to see that we were able to achieve most of our goals without the interference of Covid like we had last year.
Rolleston Lions wish you all a safe and enjoyable Christmas and holiday season.
Heather Power, Publicity - Rolleston Lions.
Merry Xmas from Nicola
Season’s greetings Selwyn! It’s been a big year, and I hope you and your family have plans to take some time off and relax over the holiday period. As the year winds down, it’s a good opportunity to take stock of - and celebrate - all that’s been achieved.
Selwyn has continued to defy all expectations, with our economy growing 6.9 percent in the year to September - well above the New Zealand average of 2.6 percent - largely driven by an influx of tourism. Selwyn also continues to be the fastest growing region in the country, well ahead of Christchurch, which is experiencing a population decline.
As your elected representative, I have loved my second year as your MP and continue to learn a lot. My job is to take your voice to the decision-makers in
Wellington, and do my best to make sure Government policies reflect what matters to our community. It really matters to me that your views are clearly represented, so I do what I can to get out and about - as often as I can - across Selwyn.
Throughout the year, I have hosted a range of coffee catch ups in Rolleston, pub politics evenings at The Rolly Inn and visited dozens of businesses in the Izone. Despite the slow and uncertain start to the year, I have also hosted a number of my colleagues at public meetings in Rolleston, including Christopher Luxon, so you can feed ideas into us, and we can share ours with you.
My office and I have helped hundreds of constituents with a huge range of problems and issues - which has always been the most rewarding part of my
role as your Member of Parliament. The General Election will be held next year, but the important business of representing you will continue as usual. Wishing you all the very best for a happy holiday season.
Nicola Grigg, MP for Selwyn.

Merry Xmas from Jan
This year has flown by and it has been great to see celebrations, events and jubilees happening again.
The Covid pandemic still hangs over our head and probably will for a long time but, for now, we just need to keep on keeping on. The return of annual, regular, and even new, events is great to see and it helps bring the community together to celebrate and take that feeling of uncertainty away.
Life at the ‘News continues to be reasonably busy and I appreciate
everyone's continued support. A big thank you to all my advertisers and editorial contributors, without you the ‘News wouldn’t exist. As the world changes to more of a digital, on-line and social media presence I often question myself if an old-fashion hard copy of the paper is still required.
But, if the paper, for reasons beyond our control, isn’t delivered on time we get multiple phone calls asking where it is. We also get people commenting to us how they love
reading the local news and how easy it is to quickly find a tradie in the local ‘rag’.
This encourages me to keep the monthly Rolleston News community paper as it is as I’m aware not everyone is on Facebook or has access to the internet.
I couldn’t do it with the support, help and loyalty of my lovely staff; Lucinda Jarvis, Chevonn Walker , sisters Holly and Abbi Moore
Jan Thomas, Editor.
Merry Xmas from Sam
This time last year, we were all looking for the light at the end of a very long Covid-19 tunnel. This year we have been able to enjoy many great community events together, including the Hororata Highland Games and our agricultural shows, as well as just being able to smile at each another without masks as we pass one another in cafes and at gatherings. I’m proud to see our district on display and for our agricultural sector to be able to show its best.
Christmas is a time to reflect and
spend time reconnecting with those that we might not have seen for a while, slowing things down and simply enjoying conversations. Christmas break is also an opportunity to recharge the batteries and step back from the things that take us away from our loved ones, put down the electronics and reach for a book or a board game.
Liz and I will be taking some time out with our daughter Elliott and our wider whanau to do just that and enjoy the very best that Waikirikiri Selwyn has
to offer. I trust you can do the same.
Merry Christmas, Mayor Sam.

TAKING CARE OVER SUMMER
As we approach the Christmas season and summer gets into full swing, it’s a good time to remind everyone about the Government’s ‘Road to Zero’ strategy. Deaths on rural Canterbury roads have decreased over the last twelve months, but we aren’t at zero yet. We all have a part to play in keeping the roads safe for our families, so when you are travelling our beautiful country this summer, remember that even momentary distractions caused by cell phones, or driving a few kms per hour too fast can have disastrous consequences. Getting to your destination five minutes faster is not worth the risk.
Police see a rise in burglaries
over the summer, mostly due to windows being left open during hot nights or people being on holiday.
Some extra precautions you can take before leaving home if you are having a well earned break are:
• Allow extra time to double check the security of your windows and doors before you hit the road. Padlocks on gates are a simple, affordable, yet very effective way of keeping your property secure also.
• Make sure all your security lights are working and your cameras have working batteries. If you don’t have security
cameras, now might be the time to consider getting some.
• If you know your neighbours let them know you are away so they can keep an eye on your home.
• Get someone to pop around and clear your mail and check on your home while you are away, or even consider getting someone to house sit for you.
We’d like to wish you a very happy Christmas break and remind you to only call 111 in the case of an emergency. It’s really important to keep 111 free for emergencies.
Senior Sergeant Anna Lloyd, Rural Area ManagerPrevention.
ROLLESTON MEN’S SHED
Although the Rolleston Men's Shed might not have the full range of skills that the television show, The Repair Shop has, there are still similar projects being done.
Recently a couple of ride-on hobby horses for the Toy Library were made and are ready to be delivered.
dismantlable reindeer are currently being constructed for the Hospice.
Recently, a heap of rusty metal came to the Shed. A Singer sewing machine table frame was sandblasted and painted, and a solid wooden top was made so that pot plants can be displayed on it. When the owner came to collect it, we had placed a cover over it, this was removed and the table was revealed.
Shed members have completed bag racks in cabinets for West Rolleston School. Their original one had curved cast hooks, which were continually breaking. The Shed’s design has staggered pegs, so the bags aren’t on top of each other, making it easier for students to access their bags. The pegs are steel rods, so they are unlikely to break, and make
hooking and unhooking as easy as possible.
Two Gaga Dodgeball pits have been made for Clearview School. Their joins are pinned so they can easily be dismantled and stored when not in use.
Also recently, three computers for members were upgraded on the same day. They were fitted with much faster disks and updated reliable systems installed. This will help keep these older computers going for awhile.
Canterbury has Hub meetings where Sheds get together to exchange ideas, swap spare tools and have lunch. These are held four times a year, with the last one for the year being held in Lincoln. At the get-together the Rolleston Shed distributed several donated computers to other Sheds and included a quick instruction session. The other Sheds will also have technical support from the Rolleston Shed when needed.
The morning cuppa is still the important item, the comradeship and a good yarn.
Feel free to drop by for a yarn! The Shed is open Saturday, Monday and Wednesday morning, or visit our website for further information: rollestonshed.wordpress.com

Merry Xmas from Councillors
We would like to thank everyone who voted in the recent Local Body Elections. It will be our honour and privilege to represent the many voices of Rolleston at Selwyn District Council over the coming years. We hope to establish regular clinics and encourage better communication between
residents and Councillors. Let us know what you think and where/ when would work for you.
By the time you read this, the Summer In Selwyn programme will be in full swing, with a range of events for all ages across the district. The holiday season is also a great opportunity to enjoy some great
walks around our beautiful area and to support local businesses. Please look out for us at local events and get in touch if you have any questions with which we can assist, or report immediate issues via 0800 735 996 or the Snap Send Solve app. Festive wishes to you and yours, have a wonderful summer, slip slap slop, and be sure to eat too much!

THE BIG FEED
On December 15th 2022, Meat the Need is hosting a nationwide event called, ‘The Big Feed’. This is New Zealand’s first rural telethon, which will be live-streamed across Meat the Need’s social platforms and other social media channels: Facebook and YouTube.
Meat the Need is a two and a half year old charity that connects generous farmer produce donations with families who need it across New Zealand. Donation options are varied; farmers can donate livestock (sheep, beef and deer) or milk (through processors Fonterra and Miraka). Ultimately, Meat the Need believes no one in New Zealand should go hungry.
The twelve hour telethon will be jammed packed with celebrity challenges, entertainment, live donation updates, panel discussions and much more.
Hosted by Matt Chisholm and Meat the Need founder, Wayne Langford, the day will be sure to give you a laugh. Underneath all of the excitement, however, is the opportunity for the rural sector and those who wish to text to donate to rally together to make a massive difference to the lives of New Zealanders suffering from food insecurity.
The Big Feed will be live-streamed from Lincoln University and will crossover live to various spots around New Zealand, including farmers and celebrities who will be showing their support, and foodbanks will showcase what impact the donations have on families.
On the day, farmers can head to meattheneed.org to ‘pledge’ an animal donation. This means when
you next send your animals in, you are pledging to spare one or two animals for Meat the Need. For dairy farmers, the sign-up process to donate milk is simple. If you are a Miraka or Fonterra supplier, head to meattheneed.org, fill out a quick form and the rest will be taken care of. The form allows you to choose how many litres you want your one-off donation to be.
If you’re a farmer and the above options don’t work for you, contact the organisers, and they will sort out a suitable alternative. People can also donate a ‘virtual animal’ on the website, with 100% of all donations going to providing mince/milk meals to families who need it most.
Let’s rally together to help feed New Zealand!
To find out more visit: meattheneed.org/thebigfeed.
The text to donate option goes live one week before the event. Text FEED to 206

OPTIMISM IS EASIER IF YOU HAVE CONTROL
While everything seems to be rising around us, it is hard not to get that sinking feeling!
Most of it is out of our control, but how we react is in our control.
When it comes to keeping the roof over your head, adjustments will need to be made. Communicate your worries with your partner and make a plan.
Involve the kids to a degree - don’t load them with more than a child should carry, but keep them in the loop in a positive way as to why Santa may not be quite so generous this year.
Making a budget will help if you stick with it and keep the end goal in sight. Ten years down the track, you will be so glad you made the small sacrifices today.
Most of all, having a plan will make it easier to float and enjoy the ride.
I wish each and every one of you a joyful Christmas and lots of sun-filled summer days!
Ginny Nelson.
FIRE BRIGADE UPDATE
Well, the holiday season is almost here, which means Christmas chaos and goodbye to 2022!
The Rolleston Brigade has had a big 2022. We’ve returned from Covid hibernation and restrictions to find our new normal again. It has certainly been a year of challenges and growth, however, we have embraced these and developed new ways of going forward together as a Brigade family.
As I write this, we currently sit at 482 callouts for 2022 and with December still to come, I suspect we will finish the year with well over 500 calls. For a volunteer station that’s a massive
commitment from all of our team!
To all of our families and those that support us to be able to run out of the house at dinner time, work or in the middle of something - thank you. I’m sure the community will also agree and say thank you.
Since the last issue went out we’ve had more of our team away on courses. Congratulations to the following members, Matt and Rose, on completing the Emergency Response Drivers (ERD) course. They are now probationary ERD drivers, and once they complete their consolidation will be fully qualified.
Brendon completed his seven day Recruit Training course at Woolston Training Centre. Welcome to the family.
As with most of our courses, Brendon will now work on his consolidation as a Firefighter and Shannon and Chris on their recent Station Officer course in Rotorua at National Training Centre (NTC). Going up to NTC is always exciting but can be nerving too! Even with some circumstances out of our control, both lads represented Rolleston well. They’ll finish their consolidation to become fully qualified Station Officers.
As the silly season fast approaches and we all start to head away for a holiday or kick back at home, please remember to think before you light.
Recently, we’ve had a few suspicious fires around Rolleston, and some where, a little common sense might have reduced some risk.
If you do see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to call 111.
When you're off on your roadie heading to your favourite camping spot remember to give yourself plenty of time to travel, take breaks or swap drivers if you can. Let's make it to our destinations and home again. Don’t be the one that has to spend your holidays in the hospital.
Our business hours won’t change, we will be available 24/7, as we always are, though we’d love to have a little extra time with our loved ones rather than riding the big red truck all the time.
From the Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade family, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe holiday season.

BOOK BEFORE CHRISTMAS
I can’t believe I’m writing this, with less than a month to go till Christmas, how did that happen? Due to the weather conditions, most of you will have noticed the fly population is very low. But be aware, as soon as we get some sun and heat, things will go mad!
Some of the ways to keep them away are:
• If you have dogs pick up their faeces regularly.
• Wash your rubbish bins regularly during the summer season.
• Barbecues are normally close to the house, so make sure you keep them clean and clean-up any spills, as well as the fat tray.
While families are away on their Christmas holidays it’s a great time to have your home treated on the inside for flies and whitetails. The house is empty and there’s no food out. See if you can find a relative or a neighbour to leave your key with and we can treat your home while you are away. If this suits, give us a call for a booking 0800 667 778.
If you have an ant problem, there
are a few things you can do to help keep them at bay also:
• Clean any outside sumps which service the kitchen - especially if you have a garbage disposal unit.
• Empty indoor food rubbish bins daily and keep them clean. Cut away any trees that are touching your house or roof, especially if your boundary trees are touching your neighbours trees.
• Again, keep wheelie bins clean.
• Don’t leave cat and dog food out, put it away after feeding.
Because ant control can be very expensive, we have written a pamphlet on ant control and can supply you with products we know work, once you know how to do it. Being on the spot with the right gear is the most effective method of control. Call us at 0800 667 778 for a kit.
Thank you all for your continued support and we wish you all a happy and safe Christmas.

SELWYN COMMUNITY CARE
Over the past few weeks, I (Heather Power ) have had eyesight difficulties and have not been able to just hop in the car when I needed to. Rather than becoming a hermit, I thought I would become a client of the Selwyn Community Care rather than just a Board member who writes reports!
What a wonderful insight into our service! Yvonne our Coordinator, has some fantastic drivers at her beck and call, and I found that nothing was a bother to any of them. All of the drivers are volunteers, and enjoy giving
their time to help folk in our community. As well as being taken to appointments, I managed a wonderful day out in the van. We saw beautiful rhododendrons in a reserve near Mt Hutt, enjoyed morning tea in the former Hororata Post Office, investigated the Junk Shop in Methven and as a bonus we called into the Book Barn in Chertsey. All trips south should include the Book Barn! One of our passengers came home with eighteen books. I wonder how many she has read by now? It was a really enjoyable day.
For me, it was a real wake-up call as to what is available in our local area and how much fun you can have when you don’t have to concentrate on driving. A huge thank you goes to our volunteer drivers.
So, if you are sitting at home, unable to, or uncertain about driving any distance give Yvonne or Ross a call. You can choose from a full day trip or an afternoon cafe trip.
Phone Yvonne on 027 313 1122 or Ross on 027 433 4767.

SELWYN MOTOR FEST
Selwyn Motor Fest is a car show and family fun day which started in 2017. Organisers aim to put on a great day out for vehicle enthusiasts and the public alike, with all proceeds being donated to local charities in Selwyn. Across their first four events, we totalled $85,000 in charitable
donations. This year’s charitable recipients will be announced in late January.
On Sunday, November 20th there was an estimated 500 vehicles enter the show and around 4,000 walk-in guests. The Rotary Club of Rolleston organised an expansive children’s area. With
the support of Faringdon, Event Hire and Stadium Finance, they were able to provide all the children’s activities for free.
The car show has twelve categories with prizes for each category winner. Selwyn Motor Fest is pretty inclusive: anyone is welcome to show any type of vehicle, be it new or old, muscle car or daily driver, two wheels or twenty and everything in between. There were some stunning vehicles on show. The fantastic sponsors, including principal sponsors MCL Contracting and Accessman, put on displays, and there were a couple of massive cranes from A&K Cranes there as well. A huge thank you goes to all the sponsors, without them organisers couldn’t hold such a successful event.
Feedback from vendors and guests was positive, with many commenting on what an enjoyable day they had.
Lastly, a massive thank you to everyone who participated this year, as well as our committee members (who are all volunteers), Lincoln & Rolleston Rotary Club members, Sarah G for the Facebook marketing, Rolleston College for their great entertainment, volunteers (including Men’s Shed and SWIGS), vendors, public guests and vehicle entrants, your help and support is really appreciated.

GARDEN COMPETITION RESULTS
Among the many attributes of Rolleston are the stunning gardens that are not always visible from the roadside. To highlight these, a Rolleston Residents Gardening Competition is held every two years where residents are encouraged to enter their gardens.
This year there were over thirty gardens entered in different categories, from a small garden to large gardens and vegetable gardens
This year’s supreme winner was Lynette Chamberlain, who also won the Medium Garden category. She was presented with
a silver cup, a keepsake and a large hamper of goodies sponsored by Ben Nicoll of Cartwright and Associates.
“I just love gardening, it's great therapy and a good hobby to have. My garden is full of colour, and a lot of my special plants came from other people’s gardens. I love pottering, and my garden is always changing,” commented Lynette.
A presentation night for the winners was held at the Community Centre on November 10th, where President, Brenda Dunlop, congratulated the winners and placegetters and was
joined by Councillor Phil Dean to present cups, keepsakes and prizes.
Clearview Primary School won the School category and were presented with handy garden implements and a silver cup sponsored by Brendan Shefford of Ray White Real Estate.
“One of my favourite parts of organising the Competition is we get to see a range of gardens, some just starting and some already established. They all have their own appeal, and I would like to thank our sponsors and those who entered the Competition and made it possible,” commented Brenda.
