BELLYFUL NEEDS YOUR HELP Bellyful is a charity that helps support families with a new baby or young children and who don’t have any immediate support available to do what the charity does – cook and deliver free meals. Over the last year, Bellyful Selwyn volunteers cooked and supplied over 1100 meals to 148 families in the district. Bellyful Selwyn co-branch coordinator Karen Spackman says, “Last year we cooked every month with the cost of a cookathon being between $500-600 a month.” The local charity relies on the generosity of people and businesses in the communities. Meals are cooked by volunteers in a commercial kitchen and include the same five key meals that are nutritious and tasty. These meals use the same recipes nationwide: Beef Lasagne, Beef Bolognese Sauce, Macaroni Cheese, Tomato and Red Lentil Soup, and Mild Vegetarian Curry. This year the charity is looking for corporate groups to help with the cookathons (meals are made in batches and frozen ready for distribution) and donations. Monetary donations go towards the cost of meals, delivery of meals, and hiring

Happy New Year and happy gardening to all the folks out there. We have had some trying times in the garden so far this summer, some rather hot drying days and then the odd colder weather at times but not enough to keep that garden looking reasonable – a little hand watering goes along way early morning or late at night. Things to do at this time of year, planting of seeds or seedlings of lettuce, beetroot, and carrots. Harvesting now – tomatoes, beans, cucumbers are well on the way, and if you are a preserver, you will have

plenty of that to do as well. For gardens that have been harvested and you are not replanting with anything consider a green crop like barley; mustard lupins are good to dig in later for winter compost. In the flower department, a great show of those summer flowers will be treating you well, don't forget to dead head roses and dahlias to give more flowers for the continuing summer. Think about the spring bulb patch and organise that because you will soon see the bulbs for sale. Outings we have had since last news print are Xmas Lunch at

the Raspberry Café, another success and well attended, visits to members gardens – it’s amazing what is behind the fence, thank you to those who let us in. Coming up we have a trip to Ashburton and Botanical gardens, so we are looking forward to those. Thank you to all who do the working bees at local places making them look great. Come along to see what we are about even if you are remotely interested in gardening – all are welcome. For more information contact Julie on 03 347 1311 or Anne on 347 8817.

ROLLESTON COMBINED PROBUS By Juliette Easterbrook, Publicity Officer. We had our Christmas function at Melton Estate in December. Although a cold wet day it was very enjoyable with a lovely meal and great entertainment from the Selwyn Ladies Christmas Choir. Our various

activities continued in December, with the walking groups starting up again in January as well as our Craft Group. Rolleston Combined Probus meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month in the Rolleston Community

Centre from 9.45am until 12 noon, the first one for the year being Wednesday, February 14. New members are welcome so if you are interested in attending a meeting, contact our president, Ann Barber, on 027 588 5033.

Rolleston Combined Probus offers a craft group for those who enjoy spending time together to share their hobbies and creations. There are many other talented members interested in knitting, crocheting, and making cards, and much more. The quilt featured was created by Brenda.

ROLLESTON CENTRAL PROBUS Happy New Year to all. We are looking forward to another year of Fellowship, Friendship and Fun with the old folk of the district in our organised Speaker Meetin gs an d Outings. Do come and join us, if are you in that category, on the third and fourth Tuesday of the month. Last year activities ended well with a great turn out to Xmas

lunch at the Chateau, wine tasting, and a meal at Larcomb Vineyard. Our Out and About group had a trip to Harts Creek and lunch at Dunsandel Store. It is great to have the walks in the area with an interesting array of wildlife to view. Our first outing of the year was a catch-up lunch at the Silver Dollar in January. Our first meeting is in Feb, where a

member will talk about his work and life experiences. There’ll be a trip to Glenlothian Farm, ongoing Coffee mornings, plus waiting to hear about the adventures of the Out and About group. For more information, contact Herb on 03 321 7466 or Denise on 027 557 0515.

SELWYN LUCKY WITH ACCESS TO SWIMMING LESSONS Learning to swim is an essential part of New Zealand life, however swim schools across New Zealand are facing swim instructor shortages and are struggling to keep up with the demand according to Swim Coaches and Teachers New Zealand president Dan Fulton. There are many waiting lists for children to get into swim lessons due to a shortage of instructors available. However, Selwyn District Council recreation programmes manager Sammy Lawson says, “The Council continues to actively recruit for swimming instructors throughout our

district to meet the growing needs of our community”. While historically finding instructors that stay longerterm has been a challenge, he says that with the recent addition of Rolleston College to the community he has seen a positive lift in the number of new passionate and enthusiastic instructors entering and qualifying from the Council’s training programmes. Selwyn Aquatic Centre has the biggest swim school in the South Island and provides lessons for all ages and stages.

If you are interested in becoming a swim instructor, email swimschool@selwyn.govt.nz or call 03 347 2742.

BUSINESS AS USUAL By Ginny Nelson, Mortgage and Insurance Advisor, GMI Ltd. Another year has flown by, and January has nearly gone too. Interest rates have stabilised for the moment and house prices seem to have steadied, so it would seem it’s just business as usual! With the new government

policy bringing the Brightline tax back to two years and the ability for tax deductibility on investment properties reinstated, perhaps it may be time for you to use the equity you have in your home to purchase a rental property, and the bank may consider 70% of rental income to service the loan.

Also remember if you are considering renovations that will save energy – heat pumps, HRV, double glazing, EV charging or a new EV or hybrid vehicle, you may qualify for an interest free or 1% loan. Make 2024 your year to consolidate and grow your assets!

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS WITH GEORGE ELDER I tend to forget about New Year resolutions by the third week, however, here are some ideas that are super easy to do and even easier to continue way past the third week of the year. We all know there are things we should eat less of, but it is very hard to stick to this and when we eat out, it all becomes a mega effort. When it’s too hard, we fall back on what we’ve been doing. I suggest you forget what happens when eating out or dining at a friend’s place, instead just focus on your eating at home so that those meals are much healthier. Even a small change like this will make a difference. First, and most important, collect up all the seed oils, margarine, fake butters and vegetable oils in the pantry and refrigerator and put them in the rubbish bin, where they belong. Then go out and buy coconut oil, olive oil and

butter. These oils are so much better for you. By the way, coconut oil does not taste of coconuts. Use these oils in cooking and baking, in dressings and real butter on your toast. Your body will thank you. Next, make the switch to sour dough bread. It is the only fermented traditional bread with low sugar. Just ensure it has been fermented overnight. It tastes amazing. Focus on foods you regularly eat that you could substitute with a low sugar or a low grain option. Here are some ideas, buy low sugar sauces, low sugar sweets, low sugar colas and soft drinks, and, occasionally, replace rice with cauliflower rice. Finally, don’t be afraid of meat, the world’s most nutritious food. There is a lot of misinformation about meat, which is surprising as many ancestral diets over thousands of years have been heavy on

West Melton Bowling Club teams competing in the various divisions of the preChristmas Centre competitions, 2x4’s, Under 5’s Pairs and Under 5’s Triples, acquitted themselves well, especially our Under 5’s Pairs team, playing in Division 1, which went through the round-robin undefeated but unfortunately lost in the final. Congratulations to Mary Burke (S), Marion Galloway and Maryanne Wright who won the Malvern Ladies Triples which was held on Sunday, November 11. All three Club Championships that were scheduled before Xmas were completed. Alastair Wilson, John Growcott and Cliff Wood won the Men’s Club Championship Triples, suffering only two losses from 10 games. The Men’s Club

Championship Fours were played over two days on December 16-17. The winners were Bob Burnett, Ron McNicholl, Keith McMecking, and Ross Sadler who completed the competition unbeaten. The Women’s Club Championship Triples were won by Gretta Leigh, Lenore Armstrong, and Angela Collier. Congratulations to all of these players. The Pre-Xmas Social Twilight Bowls were again contested by a full field of 16 teams. Playing in teams of three, this is proving to be a popular tournament involving the local community. Centre competitions in the New Year include Any Combination Eights, Under 5’s Fours, Under 5’s Pairs (2-4-2) and Over 60’s Sevens. Club competitions include

Men’s and Women’s Club Championship Pairs, Men’s and Women’s Club Championship Singles, and Women’s Club Championship Fours. Super Pairs is played on Saturday afternoons. IT’S COAST TO COAST TIME AGAIN This year’s Kathmandu Coast to Coast, held on February 910, is once again set to test the endurance of hundreds of multisport athletes from new Zealand and around the world. To date over 20,000 athletes have completed the event during its 40+ year history. Held in February each year, the race which includes r u n n in g, c yc l in g, an d kayaking, starts at Kumara Beach in the West Coast and traverses the width of the South Island, crossing the main divide and finishing on the East Coast with the finish at the Pier on New Brighton Beach in Christchurch. The Coast to Coast is one of the world’s longest running multi sports and was originally founded by Robin Judkins in 1983 with just 25 competitors who completed the race in just two days. An exciting new category features in this year’s race, the Elite U23 Division. Race Director Glen Currie says, "We are excited to introduce the 'Elite Youth' category, as it represents a significant step forward in nurturing the potential of young multisport athletes. Ten years ago, we focused on getting multisport into schools; we can now see this result with some young superstars on the start line this year. This category offers a fantastic opportunity for emerging athletes to test their skills on our iconic course. With names such as Sam King, Jenna Williams, Finn Mckenzie, and Campbell Gray on the start line – the racing will be on!"

“Recognising the crucial role of young talent in the multisport community, the 'Elite Youth' category aims to create a dedicated pathway for the sport's rising stars within the Two-Day individual category. By offering a platform for participants aged 23 and under to compete against their peers, the Kathmandu Coast to Coast seeks to foster a new generation of multisport enthusiasts who will eventually move to the Longest Day Elite category. It will open doors for talented youth and help them set their sights on the Longest Day World Multisport in the future Championships,” says Currie. Local spectators can watch part of the race nearby at the Waimakariri Gorge where competitors emerge from their 70km long navigation of the mighty Waimakariri River and change over to their bikes for the final 70km cycle across the Canterbury Plains to finish on the East Coast at the New Brighton pier.

LADIES, GIVE RUGBY A GO Women on the rugby field are proving to be a force to be reckoned with. You only need to follow the Black Ferns to see the commitment and drive to succeed at their chosen sport. The team has won six out of nine Women's Rugby World Cup tournaments. In 2023, New Zealand Rugby predicted a 40% increase in women’s rugby participation compared to 2022. That meant they expected over 35,000 women and girls to play rugby in 2023. This year, the Kirwee Rugby Football Club (KRFC) is aiming to get a women’s team up and

running. In the club’s 118year history, this will be the first women’s team and keen players can enjoy the kudos of being a founding member. KRFC spokesperson Curt Freeman is hopeful of getting enough interest to form a team and says, “Some experienced players approached the club, which lead a drive to start a female team at Kirwee. The committee has thrown its full support behind them and is currently recruiting.” Whether you’ve played rugby before or never even touched a rugby ball, Curt says this is

the perfect opportunity for all women to join the first ever Kirwee Rugby woman’s team. “No experience is needed.” Women from the age of 18 and above can play, with trainings on Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday offers option al str en gth an d conditioning with coach Kim Vargo at the club’s onsite gym and Thursday has fitness, skills and game simulation. “After every Thursday training and games, we have cooked meals for members plus free kit and use of the gym anytime all for $130.00,” says Curt. “The club also has support from Nathan Brown at Ellesmere Rugby and Emma and the team at Canterbury Rugby.” If you’d like to give rugby a go and become part of Kirwee Rugby Football Club’s history, give the club a call. Early one morning, a mother went in to wake up her son. 'Wake up, son. It's me to go to school' 'But why, Mom? I don't want to go.' 'Give me two reasons why you don't want to go.' 'Well, the kids hate me for one, and the teachers hate me, too!' 'Oh, that's no reason not to go to school. Come on now and get ready.' 'Give me two reasons why I should go to school.' 'Well, for one, you're 52 years old. And for another, you're the Head teacher!' Nathan comes home from his first day at school. Mother asks, 'What did you learn today?' He replies, 'Not enough. I have to go back tomorrow.'
